Abstract

The knowledge of scintillation quenching of $\alpha$-particles plays a paramount role in understanding $\alpha$-induced backgrounds and improving the sensitivity of liquid argon-based direct detection of dark matter experiments. We performed a relative measurement of scintillation quenching in the MeV energy region using radioactive isotopes ($^{222}$Rn, $^{218}$Po and $^{214}$Po isotopes) present in trace amounts in the DEAP-3600 detector and quantified the uncertainty of extrapolating the quenching factor to the low-energy region., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures (added 1 figure, revised 3 figures), 2 tables, revised sections 3, 4, 5. Abstract

The specific activity of the beta decay of $^{39}$Ar in atmospheric argon is measured using the DEAP-3600 detector. DEAP-3600, located 2 km underground at SNOLAB, uses a total of (3269 $\pm$ 24) kg of liquid argon distilled from the atmosphere to search for dark matter. This detector with very low background uses pulseshape discrimination to differentiate between nuclear recoils and electron recoils and is well-suited to measure the decay of $^{39}$Ar. With 167 live-days of data, the measured specific activity at the time of atmospheric extraction is [0.964 $\pm$ 0.001 (stat) $\pm$ 0.024 (sys)] Bq/kg$_{\rm atmAr}$ which is consistent with results from other experiments. A cross-check analysis using different event selection criteria provides a consistent result.

Abstract

Dark matter particles with Planck-scale mass ($\simeq10^{19}\text{GeV}/c^2$) arise in well-motivated theories and could be produced by several cosmological mechanisms. Using a blind analysis of data collected over a 813 d live time with DEAP-3600, a 3.3 t single-phase liquid argon-based dark matter experiment at SNOLAB, a search for supermassive dark matter was performed, looking for multiple-scatter signals. No candidate signal events were observed, leading to the first direct detection constraints on Planck-scale mass dark matter. Leading limits constrain dark matter masses between $8.3\times10^{6}$ and $1.2\times10^{19} \text{GeV}/c^2$, and cross sections for scattering on $^{40}$Ar between $1.0\times10^{-23}$ and $2.4\times10^{-18} \text{cm}^2$. These are used to constrain two composite dark matter models.

Abstract

The DEAP-3600 detector searches for the scintillation signal from dark matter particles scattering on a 3.3 tonne liquid argon target. The largest background comes from $^{39}$Ar beta decays and is suppressed using pulseshape discrimination (PSD). We use two types of PSD algorithm: the prompt-fraction, which considers the fraction of the scintillation signal in a narrow and a wide time window around the event peak, and the log-likelihood-ratio, which compares the observed photon arrival times to a signal and a background model. We furthermore use two algorithms to determine the number of photons detected at a given time: (1) simply dividing the charge of each PMT pulse by the charge of a single photoelectron, and (2) a likelihood analysis that considers the probability to detect a certain number of photons at a given time, based on a model for the scintillation pulseshape and for afterpulsing in the light detectors. The prompt-fraction performs approximately as well as the log-likelihood-ratio PSD algorithm if the photon detection times are not biased by detector effects. We explain this result using a model for the information carried by scintillation photons as a function of the time when they are detected., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

A construction analogous to that of Godefroy-Kalton for metric spaces allows to embed isometrically, in a canonical way, every quasi-metric space $(X,d)$ to an asymmetric normed space $\mathcal{F}_a(X,d)$ (its quasi-metric free space, also called asymmetric free space or semi-Lipschitz free space). The quasi-metric free space satisfies a universal property (linearization of semi-Lipschitz functions). The (conic) dual of $\mathcal{F}_a(X,d)$ coincides with the nonlinear asymmetric dual of $(X,d)$, that is, the space $\mathrm{SLip}_0(X,d)$ of semi-Lipschitz functions on $(X,d)$, vanishing at a base point. In particular, for the case of a metric space $(X,D)$, the above construction yields its usual free space. On the other hand, every metric space $(X,D)$ inherits naturally a canonical asymmetrization coming from its free space $\mathcal{F}(X)$. This gives rise to a quasi-metric space $(X,D_+)$ and an asymmetric free space $\mathcal{F}_a(X,D_+)$. The symmetrization of the latter is isomorphic to the original free space $\mathcal{F}(X)$. The device seeks to support the vital sustainability of older adults by storing critical health information when electronic or paper records have been lost as a consequence of a disaster. Older adults are particularly vulnerable to experience negative consequences in this context. The present study explores the end-user acceptability of DEPPAS in order to inform the next design stages of the device.Methods: Twenty home-dwelling urban male and female older adults enrolled in a chronic health management program were invited to participate in two focus groups. A prototype of DEPPAS was presented and reactions to health service disruption scenarios were explored. Focus groups were transcribed. Content analysis based on the Technology Acceptance Model was conducted.Results: Older adults are acutely aware of their vulnerable health status. Participants report overall positive reactions to DEPPAS. The device was associated with feelings of relief and an increased sense of control over their health management. DEPPAS is perceived as useful, usable, and safe. Even though concerns regarding confidentiality were raised, benefits are perceived as more relevant than potential risks. Participants agree that its usefulness could be extended beyond disaster situations to everyday health care management. Implications for future development and limitations are discussed.Conclusion: The conceptual design DEPPAS shows a high level of acceptability by this end user and a high potential to be integrated with other complementary technologies (e.g. GPS, medication reminders) that could significantly contribute to improving health management in disaster situations.Keywords: wearable health devices, portable electronic health records, acceptability, older adults

Resumen: La estenosis valvular aórtica es la valvulopatía más frecuente y en los últimos años ha sido admirable el avance tanto en su aproximación diagnóstica como terapéutica, dado el advenimiento del reemplazo de válvula aórtica transcatéter y múltiples predictores tanto clínicos, como ecocardiográficos y tomográficos que favorecen la intervención valvular temprana, en una enfermedad que tiene una evolución progresiva.En la actualidad se conoce la estenosis aórtica no como un problema valvular puro; en su evaluación se requiere integrar el denominado complejo ventrículo, valvular y arterial, para comprender los diferentes fenómenos fisiológicos que pueden generar diversos estados de flujo y gradientes. Recientemente, numerosas publicaciones han descrito en detalle la estenosis aórtica de bajo flujo y bajo gradiente, permitiendo aclarar su enfoque diagnóstico, terapéutico y pronóstico que la convierten en un subgrupo especial que se describe a continuación. Abstract: Aortic valve stenosis is the most common valve disease. In the last few years, its diagnostic and therapeutic approach has advanced considerably with the advent of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), as well as the many clinical and electrocardiographic and computed tomography predictors that favour an early intervention of the valve in a disease that is progressive.Aortic stenosis is currently known not just as a pure valve problem. In its evaluation it has to include the so-called ventricular, valvular and arterial complex, in order to understand the different physiological phenomena that can generate different flow and gradient states. Recently, many publications have presented detailed accounts of low-flow, low-gradient aortic stenosis, focusing on its diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic approach that converts it into a special sub-group as described in the article. Abstract

The specific activity of the β decay of 39 Ar in atmospheric argon is measured using the DEAP-3600 detector. DEAP-3600, located 2 km underground at SNOLAB, uses a total of (3269 ± 24) kg of liquid argon distilled from the atmosphere to search for dark matter. This detector is well-suited to measure the decay of 39 Ar owing to its very low background levels. This is achieved in two ways: it uses low background construction materials; and it uses pulse-shape discrimination to differentiate between nuclear recoils and electron recoils. With 167 live-days of data, the measured specific activity at the time of atmospheric extraction is (0.964 ± 0.001 stat ± 0.024 sys ) Bq/kg atmAr , which is consistent with results from other experiments. Desde nuestra contribución activa a este debate, nuestro objetivo con este artículo es reflexionar sobre los aportes y limitaciones que ha supuesto la ecología política latinoamericana para el análisis del extractivismo, y en particular las posiciones de los sujetos comunitarios e indígenas. Analizaremos el enfoque analítico que se da a escenarios de conflicto, y cómo este tiende a asignar a dichos sujetos un lugar fijo tanto geográfico como de enunciación. Esto pueda representar un limitante, particularmente en casos donde la construcción del espacio, la naturaleza, y las posiciones de los sujetos se atraviesa por historias y prácticas de movilidad. Con base en tres estudios de casos de despojo extractivo-capitalista en la Amazonía Ecuatoriana, mostramos que al establecer un diálogo entre la ecología política y la geografía crítica de las movilidades se puede enriquecer el enfoque analítico sobre el extractivismo y las posiciones de los sujetos. 25 p.

49. Influence of the ripening chamber's geographical location on dry-cured Iberian ham's key odorants

Abstract

Olfactometric and sensory analyses have been applied to study the possible influence of the ripening chamber’s geographical location on the aroma sensory profiles and key odorants of Iberian ham. Dry-cured Iberian ham was obtained from 3 acorn-fed pigs and, for the first time, both of the participating production facilities, located in two different Andalusian municipalities with different altitudes above mean sea level, processed one of the two hind legs from each pig. The descriptive sensory profile of orthonasal and retronasal odours was determined by trained panellists, while odour-active compounds were determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry-olfactometry (GC/MS-O). The results obtained showed that, separately, both techniques enable Iberian ham samples to be differentiated by their ripening chamber’s geographical location. For sensory analysis, retronasal sensory analysis appeared to be the most suitable for this goal, highlighting the “meat broth odour” and “roasted nuts odour” descriptors which presented significant differences between geographical locations for samples from all pigs. Moreover, ripening chamber’s geographical location characteristics and the initial composition of the raw material seemed to influence the content of some odour-active compounds. The odour-active compound identified as octane/acetone and isobutanol were conditioned by the ripening chamber’s geographical location, while decanal/2-ethyl-1-hexanol, 1-undecanol, 2-furanmethanol and cis-2-nonenal were also influenced by the individual pig itself. This study showed that slight climatological differences due to the location of the ripening chamber seem to have somewhat of an influence on the aromatic profile.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Information on tuberculosis (TB) and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is still limited. The aim of this study was to describe the features of the TB/COVID-19 co-infected individuals from a prospective, anonymised, multicountry register-based cohort with special focus on the determinants of mortality and other outcomes. METHODS: We enrolled all patients of any age with either active TB or previous TB and COVID-19. 172 centres from 34 countries provided individual data on 767 TB-COVID-19 co-infected patients, (>50% population-based). RESULTS: Of 767 patients, 553 (74.0%) out of 747 had TB before COVID-19 (including 234 out of 747 with previous TB), 71 (9.5%) out of 747 had COVID-19 first and 123 (16.5%) out of 747 had both diseases diagnosed within the same week (n=35 (4.6%) on the same day). 85 (11.08%) out of 767 patients died (41 (14.2%) out of 289 in Europe and 44 (9.2%) out of 478 outside Europe; p=0.03): 42 (49.4%) from COVID-19, 31 (36.5%) from COVID-19 and TB, one (1.2%) from TB and 11 from other causes. In the univariate analysis on mortality the following variables reached statistical significance: age, male gender, having more than one comorbidity, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, chronic renal disease, presence of key symptoms, invasive ventilation and hospitalisation due to COVID-19. The final multivariable logistic regression model included age, male gender and invasive ventilation as independent contributors to mortality. CONCLUSION: The data suggest that TB and COVID-19 are a "cursed duet" and need immediate attention. TB should be considered a risk factor for severe COVID disease and patients with TB should be prioritised for COVID-19 preventative efforts, including vaccination.
