6. Study on Clinical Features and the Reproductive Hormonal Profile in Normal, Overweight and Obese Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Women of Selected Age Group

Abstract

The objectives of the present study are to compare the clinical features among normal and PCOS women and to assess the reproductive hormonal profile of normal and PCOS women of the overweight and obese group. The normal and PCOS women were subdivided into three groups, group 1-healthy women with BMI 18.5- 24.99 (n=10), group 2 PCOS with BMI 25-29.9 (n=11) and group 3 PCOS with BMI >29.9 (n=10). The prevalence of menstrual irregularity, acne, hirsutism and obesity are the major clinical manifestations of PCOS women than the normal women of the same age group. The levels of testosterone increased and estradiol level decreased in the PCOS subjects of both overweight and obese groups. These observations in the study strongly support the presence of hyperandrogenism in PCOS women and favors all the associated clinical features. The results also clearly demonstrated the increase in body mass index reflecting a negative impact on the reproductive outcome in PCOS.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of sixteen weeks Yoga practice on Emotional Intelligence among Women Athletes. In this experimental study, demographic questionnaire, Emotional Intelligence Scale, for this study were used. Sixty Sarada college for women Athletes (women) were chosen with randomized way allocated into an experimental and a control group. Experimental group undertook Yoga Practice and they were practiced Padmasana, Paschimottanasana, Vrksasana for twenty minutes and twice a day for Sixteen weeks, control group undertook not any practice and they had their routine life. 11. Non O1 non O139 Vibrio choleraesepticemia in a patient with carcinoma pancreas-a case report and literature review, 2020–2023

Abstract

Non-O1/non-O139 Vibrio cholerae, a comparably poorly studied pathogen is culpable of sporadic but serious infections. We report a case of non O1 non O139 Vibrio choleraesepticemia in a middle aged male recently diagnosed with carcinoma pancreas. He underwent biliary tract interventional procedure for hematemesis three weeks before the presentation. Now, he presented with fever, abdominal pain, hematemesis and melena. Endoscopy revealed severe portal hypertensive gastropathy and mild hemobilia. Blood culture grew Vibrio cholerae, identified as non O1 non O139 by serogrouping. He recovered successfully with timely diagnosis, appropriate antibiotics and supportive measures.

Abstract

Objective: The present study attempts to estimate the total flavonoid and phenolic content and to evaluate the free radical scavenging activity of the roots of Glycyrrhiza glabra Leguminosae family.Methods: The various extracts, namely, petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, aqueous, and methanol of G. glabra root were evaluated by 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH), hydroxyl radicals, superoxide, 2,2’-azino-bis-3-ethyl benzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS), and non-radicals such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and nitric oxide (NO) and assays. Total flavonoid and phenol contents were estimated as per the standard procedure.Results: The effect of the methanolic extract of G. glabra root was found to be more in scavenging the free radicals such as DPPH, hydroxyl, H2O2, superoxide, NO, and ABTS when compared to other extracts. The presence of flavonoids and phenol in the plant is responsible for the free radical scavenging effects.Conclusion: This in vitro assessment of the antioxidant properties of the various extracts of G. glabra roots validates and confirms its free-radical scavenging activity. Thus, the present data suggest that the G. glabra root extract can be used as a good source of natural antioxidants for health benefits.

The effects of alpha-ketoglutarate (alpha-KG) on hyperammonemia induced by ammonium acetate were studied biochemically in experimental rats. The levels of circulatory urea and non-protein nitrogen increased significantly in rats treated with ammonium acetate and decreased significantly in rats treated with alpha-KG and ammonium acetate. In liver and kidney tissues, similar patterns of alterations across groups were observed in the levels of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and lipid profile variables (free fatty acids, triacylglycerols, phospholipids, and cholesterol). Further, enzymatic (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase) and non-enzymatic (reduced glutathione) antioxidants in both tissues decreased significantly in rats treated with ammonium acetate and increased significantly in rats treated with alpha-KG and ammonium acetate. The biochemical alterations during alpha-KG treatment might have been due to 1) the detoxification of excess ammonia, 2) participation in the non-enzymatic oxidative decarboxylation during hydrogen peroxide decomposition, and 3) enhancement of the proper metabolism of fats that could suppress oxygen radical generation and thus prevent lipid peroxidative damages in rats.
