En este trabajo presentamos un análisis del escenario social y cultural de la época en que ocurre el viaje de Darwin a Chile. Sobre esa base, describimos el impacto a corto y mediano plazo del viaje del naturalista en el ambiente cultural de la época en el país, sugiriendo algunos elementos que pudieron haber infuido en el establecimiento y propagación de las ideas Darwinianas en el Chile de fnes del siglo XIX y primera mitad del siglo XX. Identifcamos tres etapas en el proceso. Primero, una etapa naturalista, relacionada con el aporte directo de Darwin al conocimiento de la diversidad biológica de Chile descrita hasta aquel momento. Segundo, una etapa ideológica, caracterizada por debates no científcos de su obra, los cuales fueron efectuados por intelectuales chilenos interesados en los alcances religiosos, éticos, sociales y educacionales de la obra del naturalista. Tercero, una etapa científca, relacionada con la implementación de investigación formal en biología evolutiva impulsada por el desarrollo de la Síntesis Moderna a comienzos del siglo XX. Desde entonces, la investigación sobre biología evolutiva Darwiniana ha aumentado en amplitud y profundidad y continúa expandiéndose a través de nuevos y diversos programas de investigación. We analyze the social and cultural scenario prevalent at the moment of Darwin’s visit to Chile. On this basis, we describe the short-and mid-term impact of the Beagle voyage upon the cultural environment at that time, and suggest some elements that may have infuenced the settlement and spread of Darwin’s ideas at the end of the 19th and frst half of the 20th centuries in Chile. We identifed three stages in the process. First, a naturalist stage, related with the direct impact of Darwin’s work on the knowledge of biological diversity described in Chile at that moment. Second, an ideological stage, characterized by extra scientifc debates on Darwin’s major ideas. Most of this debate was carried out by Chilean intellectuals, which focused upon the religious, ethical, social, and educational consequences of Darwin’s ideas rather than in their scientifc soundness. Third, a scientifc stage, related with the implementation of formal research in evolutionary biology impulsed by the development of the Modern Synthesis in the frst half of the 20th century. Since then, research on evolutionary biology has increased in scope and depth and continues spreading through diverse and new research programs in the country.

Most Chilean amphibians belong to the subfamily Telmatobiinae (Anura, Leptodactylidae). Several phylogenetic studies of Leptodactylidae and Telmatobiinae, based principally on morphological characters, have implicitly suggested closer relationships of some species of the Telmatobiinae with members of other subfamilies of leptodactylids, including the leptodactyline genus Pleurodema which is present in Chile. Furthermore, a growing number of molecular studies suggest a non monophyletic status for Telmatobiinae, although none of these studies have investigated the phylogenetic relationships of this subfamily. We compared partial sequences of the ribosomal mitochondrial genes 12S and 16S to determine the phylogenetic relationships of Chilean leptodactylids and its position within the modern anurans (Neobatrachia). We included 22 species from nine of the 10 genera of telmatobiines present in Chile (Alsodes, Atelognathus, Batrachyla, Caudiverbera, Eupsophus, Hylorina, Insuetophrynus, Telmatobufo and Telmatobius), two species of the genus Pleurodema, and one species of Rhinodermatidae, which is considered a leptodactylid derivative family by some authors. We also included 51 species representing most of the families that compose Neobatrachia. Phylogenetic reconstructions were performed using the methods of maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference. The topologies obtained in all the analyses indicate that Telmatobiinae is a polyphyletic assemblage, composed by species belonging to Hyloidea (most of the genera) and species more related to Australasian taxa (the clade Caudiverbera + Telmatobufo, defined as the tribe Calyptocephalellini). These molecular data support groups based on other kinds of evidence (Caudiverbera + Telmatobufo, Alsodes + Eupsophus and Batrachyla + Hylorina) and raise new phylogenetic hypotheses for several genera of telmatobiines (Atelognathus with Batrachyla and Hylorina, Insuetophrynus + Rhinoderma). The phylogenetic relationships recovered in this study suggest a multiple origin for Chilean temperate forest frogs and reveal an unexpected level of taxonomic diversity and evolutionary divergence among Chilean leptodactylids

Varios estudios filogenéticos de Leptodactylidae y Telmatobiinae, basados principalmente en caracteres morfológicos, han sugerido implícitamente relaciones más estrechas de algunas especies de Telmatobiinae con miembros de otras subfamilias de leptodactílidos, incluyendo el género leptodactilino Pleurodema presente en Chile. Además, un número creciente de estudios moleculares sugieren un estatus no monofilético para Telmatobiinae, aunque ninguno de estos estudios ha investigado las relaciones filogenéticas de esta subfamilia. Secuencias parciales de los genes ribosomales mitocondriales 12S y 16S fueron comparadas para determinar las relaciones filogenéticas de los leptodactílidos chilenos y su posición dentro de los anuros modernos (Neobatrachia). Las topologías obtenidas en todos los análisis indican que Telmatobiinae es un ensamblaje polifilético, compuesto por especies que pertenecen a Hyloidea (la mayoría de los géneros) y especies más relacionadas con taxa de Australasia (el clado Caudiverbera + Telmatobufo, definido como la tribu Calyptocephalellini). Estos datos moleculares respaldan agrupaciones basadas en otro tipo de evidencia (Caudiverbera + Telmatobufo, Alsodes + Eupsophus y Batrachyla + Hylorina) y plantean nuevas hipótesis de relaciones para algunos géneros de telmatobinos (Atelognathus con Batrachyla e Hylorina, Insuetophrynus + Rhinoderma). The assimilation efficiency of Bufo spinulosus tadpoles from four localities in Chile was evaluated for two different temperatures (15 and 25 ºC) and two different diets (low nutritional quality diet (LQD): 22.28 mg g N-1; high nutritional quality diet (HQD): 47.53 mg g N-1) using ash as a marker of digestion. Results showed that geographic origin did not affect assimilation efficiency, while the relationship observed between temperature and diet quality was significant. Assimilation efficiency was greater for the HQD when tadpoles were maintained at 15 °C, instead significant differences were not found between diets for tadpoles maintained at 25 °C. Our results suggest that the effect of temperature on digestive processes is more relevant than its effect on transit time in the digestive tract. The differences in size at metamorphosis in B spinulosus populations of distinct geographic origin could not be explained by the existence of differences in physiologic digestive capacities La eficiencia de asimilación de materia en larvas de Bufo spinulosus provenientes de cuatro localidades de Chile, fue evaluada para dos temperaturas (15 y 25 ºC) y dos dietas diferentes (pobre: 22,28 mg g N-1 y rica 47,53 mg g N-1), utilizando la ceniza cómo marcador de digestión. Los resultados mostraron que la localidad de origen de las larvas no afecta la eficiencia de asimilación, mientras que se registró una interacción significativa entre la temperatura y la calidad de la dieta. La eficiencia de asimilación es mayor para la dieta rica cuando las larvas fueron mantenidas a 15 °C, no existiendo diferencias entre dietas cuando fueron mantenidas a 25 °C. Nuestros resultados sugieren que para B. spinulosus el efecto de la temperatura sobre los procesos digestivos es más relevante que su efecto sobre el tiempo de tránsito en el tracto digestivo. Las diferencias en el tamaño alcanzado a la metamorfosis en poblaciones de B. spinulosus de origen geográfico distinto, no podrían ser explicadas por la existencia de diferencias en las capacidades fisiológicas digestivas

Bufo spinulosus has a wide and fragmented range distribution in Chile (18° to 33° S) along altitudinal and latitudinal gradients. Genetic variation was estimated using RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) markers in 10 populations from northern and central Chile. Morphometric and genetic information was analyzed as a function of geographical origin. The correlation between genetic and morphometric differentiation was analyzed by the Mantel test. An increase in body size as a function of latitude was observed. Specimens from El Tatio had the smallest body size and the greatest morphometric divergence. The AMOVA applied to genetic data indicated that 57.85 % of the variance is explained by interregional differences and that 30.12 % of the variance is found within populations. Low levels of within-regions genetic differentiation was observed in northern populations while higher levels of genetic differentiation was found in populations from central Chile. Mantel tests revealed a significant, positive correlation between genetic variation and geographic distance. When we excluded El Tatio population, Mantel test analyses showed significant correlations between morphological distance and genetic and geographic distances. We discuss whether water temperature could explain the morphological divergence observed in individuals from El Tatio Bufo spinulosus presenta una amplia y fragmentada distribución en Chile (18º a 33º S) a lo largo de gradientes altitudinales y latitudinales. La variación genética fue estimada utilizando marcadores RAPD ("Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA") en diez poblaciones del norte y centro de Chile. La información morfométrica y genética fue analizada en función de la procedencia geográfica. La correlación entre diferenciación genética y morfométrica fue analizada utilizando la prueba de Mantel. Se observó un incremento en el tamaño corporal en función de la latitud. Los individuos de El Tatio mostraron el tamaño corporal más pequeño y la mayor divergencia morfométrica. El AMOVA aplicado a los datos genéticos indicó que el 57.85 % de la varianza es explicada por diferencias entre regiones y que el 30.12 % de la varianza se encuentra dentro de las poblaciones. Bajos niveles de diferenciación genética intraregional fueron observados en las poblaciones del norte de Chile, mientras que las poblaciones de Chile central mostraron niveles más altos de diferenciación genética. Las pruebas de Mantel revelaron una correlación significativa y positiva entre la variación genética y la distancia geográfica. Cuando excluimos la población de El Tatio, las pruebas de Mantel mostraron correlaciones positivas y significativas entre las distancias morfológicas, genéticas y geográficas. Se discute si la temperatura del agua podría explicar la divergencia morfológica observada en los individuos de El Tatio

A neotype for the Teiid Lacerta palluma Molina, 1782 (currently) is fixed and described. This old species has been subject during more than two centuries to nomenclatural changes due the absence of an holotype (probably never fixed, or destroyed during the fire of the Jesuits from South America during the XVIII century). Ignacio Molina, a Chilean jesuit prist, born in Talca, was the first in describe this species during his staying at the University of Bologne, in Italy. The neotype fixation gives definitive taxonomic stability to Callopistes palluma (Molina, 1782) and also the Phymaturus flagellifer (Bell, 1843) = Phymaturus palluma. Auct. Nec. Molina, 1782. Si stabilisce un neotipo per il Teiide Lacerta palluma Molina, 1782 (oggi Callopistes palluma (Molina, 782)), antica specie soggetta durante due secoli a interpretazioni contraddittorie o errate per la mancanza di un olotipo (probabilmente mai designato, o forse distrutto durante la violenta espulsione dei Gesuiti dal Sud America nel Sec. XVIII, nella quale fu coinvolto l’abate Ignazio Molina, cileno, nativo di Talea). A molecular characterization of tubulin and microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs) along with their intracellular pool distributions in both unfertilized and fertilized oocytes of the trout Oncorhynchus mykiss was carried out. In vitro assembly of microtubular proteins was obtained by cycles of assembly-disassembly and by taxol-induced polymerization, thus allowing identification of the protein components of isolated microtubules from the trout oocyte. Extraction procedures were developed in order to separate molecular components of the egg vitelum prior to purification steps. The use of antibodies that specifically tag tubulin and a set of site-directed probes against repetitive binding sequences on MAPs provided data on the presence of tubulins and enabled the identification of an 85-kDa protein that shares common functional epitopes with mammalian MAPs. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay analysis of the free soluble tubulin pools revealed a significant decrease in the pool extent during fertilization as compared with unfertilized oocytes controls. Interestingly, this decrease in free tubulin in the fertilized trout oocyte appeared to be accompanied with a concomitant increase of the assembled tubulin pools. Within the context of the known effects of heat shock in oocyte fertilization, temperature changes from 4 to 26.5 degrees C of fertilized eggs resulted in a transient increase in the soluble tubulin pools during the initial 5-min heat incubation, decaying after 10 min treatment, to reach at 15 min the levels of soluble tubulin pools of untreated controls. Total tubulin pools remained constant during the heat incubations of fertilized eggs. The distribution of MAPs pools in the oocyte was also investigated using the specific immunological probes. In contrast to tubulin no major differences were found between free MAPs pools of the fertilized oocytes as compared with unfertilized controls. However, heat shock treatment of fertilized oocytes also induced a transient increase in free MAP pools during the first 5 min followed by a mobilization of immunoreactive MAP components from the soluble to the assembled pools. Los titanosaurios son los dinosaurios mejor documentados en capas cretácicas y además representan a los vertebrados más abundantes de todos los vertebrados terrestres mesozoicos de Chile. Sus huesos fósiles y pistas, de amplia luz de rastro, han sido hallados en varias localidades del norte del país en capas que datan del periodo Cretácico. En orden de establecer las relaciones filogenéticas de los ejemplares más completos conocidos en el país (SNGM-1; SGO.PV 961), se realizó un análisis cladístico de parsimonia utilizando los programas Paup y NONAlWinclada con las matrices más completas disponibles para Sauropoda y Titanosauria. Estos hallazgos aportan al entendimiento evolutivo de los titanosaurios, antes sintetizados en dos enfoques distintos: uno respaldado por una filogenia robusta con poco muestreo taxonomico (matriz diseñada para Sauropoda) y otro con poca resolución y consistencia, pero incluyendo a casi todos los titanosaurios conocidos hasta este momento (matriz diseñada para 1'itanosauria). Los resultados del estudio filogenético variaron dependiendo de la matriz empleada. En la topología obtenida de la matriz diseñada para Sauropoda, ambos especímenes fueron ubicados como Lithostrotia, dado que incluye al ancestro en común más reciente compartido entre Saliasaurus y Malawisaurus, más todos sus descendientes. En este análisis, Saltasauridae forma una familia derivada de titanosaurios, y los especímenes chilenos se ubicarían más cercanamente a este ciado que a Malawisaurus (AMP: 3; LA: 434; IC: 0,66). Por otro lado, en la matriz diseñada para Titanosauria, ambos ejemplares chilenos se posicionan dentro del dado Saltasauridae. A diferencia de la configuración previa los especímenes chilenos se encuentran más afines a Saltasaurinae, subfamilia compuesta principalmente por especies gondwánicas, que a Opisthocoelicaudinae (AMP: 100; LA: 811; IC: 0,48). Además, este último ciado incluye a Malawisaurus como un Saltasauridae, previamente considerado outgroup de este ciado. Así, Malawisaurus es incorporado como taxón derivado de Saltasauridae, y el cIado Lithostrotia, como un nodo contenido en esta familia. Si bien, en ambos análisis, los ciados Saltasauridae. Saitasaurinae y Opisthocoelicaudiinae corresponden a grupos monofiléticos, no es posible validar su condición de cIados discretos ya que mostraron ser variables en cuanto a su composición taxonómica y por presentar una baja consistencia de soporte de sus nodos. En el caso de Lithostrotia (sensu estricto) este ciado fue hallado parafilético en los análisis de la matriz de Titanosauria, por no incluir a Opisthocoelicaudiinae. Sin embargo, el rápido colapso de los nodos que sustenta esta parafihia indica que tal condición puede ser variable. Desde un punto de vista taxonómico sistemático, el único consenso alcanzado entre todos los análisis (usando ambas matrices) es incluir a los especímenes chilenos como Lithostrotia, separándolos de formas como Ampelosarus, Aeolosaurus, Paralititan y Argyrosaurus. Por otra parte, desde el punto de vista biogeográfico, el cladograma de mayor muestreo taxonómico muestra que no es posible reconocer un árbol consistente con el modelo propuesto para la deriva continental. Así, la alternancia de taxa laurásicos y gondwánicos apunta en el sentido que esta distribución es el resultado de uno o varios eventos de dispersión. Los especímenes chilenos se encontrarían en un grupo que incluiría formas de América del Sur y Norte, India, Madagascar, África y Europa, por lo que genera tal complejidad que hace necesario nueva información para dilucidar las relaciones biogeográficas de los titanosaurios.
