Abstract

Increased immune–inflammatory activation has been repeatedly linked to etiopathogenesis and the progression of both major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar depression (BD). We explore the role of soluble intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1) in diagnostic differentiation and disorder progression in patients with MDD and BD. Serum levels of sICAM-1 and sVCAM-1 were measured in 137 patients (MDD = 93 and BD = 44) and compared with 73 healthy controls. The severity of psychopathology was assessed using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and Clinical Global Impression Scale. After adjustment for multiple confounders, we noticed significant downregulation of sVCAM-1 and upregulation of sICAM-1 levels in both patient groups. Decreased sVCAM-1 levels were detected in patients with acute episodes of BD when compared to MDD. Immune mediators were related to indicators of progression in both mood disorders. They also followed different post-treatment normalization patterns in MDD and BD and in relation to the stage of each disorder. Adhesion molecules could potentially be useful in discriminating between patients with MDD and BD and determining the possible progression of the disorders. Abstract

While the exact health risks associated with nanoplastics are currently the focus of intense research, there is no doubt that humans are exposed to nanoplastics and that food could be a major source of exposure. Nanoplastics are released from plastic materials and articles used during food production, processing, storage, preparation, and serving. They are also likely to enter the food chain via contaminated water, air, and soil. However, very limited exposure data for risk assessment exists so far due to the lack of suitable analytical methods. Nanoplastic detection in food poses a great analytical challenge due to the complexity of plastics and food matrices as well as the small size and expectedly low concentration of the plastic particles. Multidetector field flow fractionation has emerged as a valuable analytical technique for nanoparticle separation over the last decades, and the first studies using the technique for analyzing nanoplastics in complex matrices are emerging. In combination with online detectors and offline analysis, multidetector field flow fractionation is a powerful platform for advanced characterization of nanoplastics in food by reducing sample complexity, which otherwise hampers the full potential of most analytical techniques. The focus of this article is to present the current state of the art of multidetector field flow fractionation for nanoplastic analysis and to discuss future trends and needs aiming at the analysis of nanoplastics in food.

Plastic fragments, weathered into or released in the form of micro- and nanoplastics, are persistent and widespread in the environment, and it is anticipated that they have negative environmental impacts. This necessitates immediate efforts for management strategies throughout the entire plastics lifecycle. This opinion paper was initiated by the EU COST Action CA20101 PRIORITY, which focuses on the need to develop an effective global networking platform dealing with research, implementation, and consolidation of ways to address the worldwide challenges associated with micro- and nanoplastics pollution in the environment.

Abstract

Development of analytical methods for the characterization (particle size determination, chemical identification, and quantification) of the low mu m-range microplastics (MPs; 1-10 mu m) and nanoplastics (NPs; 1 nm to 1 mu m) in air - coarse (PM10; <10 mu m), fine (PM2.5; <2.5 mu m) and ultrafine (PM1; <1 mu m) particulate matter - is a quickly emerging scientific field as inhalation has been identified as one of the main routes of human exposure. The respiratory tract may serve as both target tissue and port of entry to the systemic circulation for the inhaled MPs and NPs with their small particle size. As an outcome, the interest of the scientific community, policy makers, and the general public in indoor airborne MPs and NPs increased tremendously. However, there is a lack of detailed knowledge on the indoor and outdoor sources of MPs and NPs, their levels, and their health impact. This is mainly related to a lack of standardized sampling and analytical methods for size determination, chemical identification, and quantification. In this review, recent developments in mass spectrometry-based analytical methods for size determination, chemical identification, and quantification of the MPs and NPs in indoor air and dust, are discussed.

Abstract

International audience; The nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) particles are widely used with high success in removal/degradation of a variety of environmental contaminants under laboratory conditions. However, high production costs, mobility of nZVI particles limited to a maximum of a few meters due to the rapid aggregation of primary particles, and limited effectiveness of the iron surface to serve as an electron donor for longer period due to fast depletion of nZVI particles after side reaction with groundwater constituents were main technical obstacles for rising the full potential of this technology.
