1. Examining the sensitivity of FASER to Generalized Neutrino Interactions

Abstract

We investigate the sensitivity of the FASER$\nu$ detector, a novel experimental setup at the LHC, to probe and constrain generalized neutrino interactions (GNI). Employing a comprehensive theoretical framework, we model the effects of generalized neutrino interactions on neutrino-nucleon deep inelastic scattering processes within the FASER$\nu$ detector. By considering all the neutrino channels produced at the LHC, we perform a statistical analysis to determine the sensitivity of FASER$\nu$ to constrain these interactions. Our results demonstrate that FASER$\nu$ can place stringent constraints on the GNI effective couplings. Additionally, we study the relation between GNI and a minimal Leptoquark model where the SM is augmented by a singlet Leptoquark with hypercharge $1/3$. We have found that the sensitivities for various combinations of the Leptoquark Yukawa couplings are approximately $\mathcal{O}(1)$, particularly when considering a Leptoquark mass in the TeV range., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures

2. Rare decay $t\to c\gamma\gamma$ via scalar leptoquark doublets

Abstract

A calculation of the one-loop contribution to the rare three-body flavor changing neutral current top quark decay $t\to c\gamma\gamma$ is presented in the framework of models with one or more scalar leptoquark $SU(2)$ doublets with hypercharge $7/6$. Analytical expressions for the invariant amplitude of the generic decay $f_i\to f_j\gamma\gamma$, with $f_{i,j}$ a lepton or quark, are presented in terms of Passarino-Veltman integral coefficients, from which the amplitudes for the processes $t\to c\gamma\gamma$ and $\ell_i\to \ell_j\gamma\gamma$ follow easily. An analysis of the current constraints on the parameter space is presented in the scenario with only one scalar LQ doublet and bounds on the LQ couplings are obtained from the muon $g-2$ anomaly, the lepton flavor violating (LFV) decay $\tau\to \mu\gamma$ and extra constraints meant to avoid tension between theory predictions and experimental data. For a LQ with a mass in the range of $1$--$1.5$ TeVs, the estimate ${\rm Br}(t\to c\gamma\gamma)\sim 10^{-11}$--$10^{-12}$ is obtained for the largest allowed values of the LQ coupling constants, which means that this decay would be below the reach of future experimental measurements. We also consider an scenario with three scalar doublets, which was recently proposed to explain the lepton flavor universality violation anomalies in $B$ decays as well as the muon $g-2$ anomaly. Although this scenario allows large LQ couplings to the tau lepton and the $c$ and $t$ quarks, the branching ratio of the $t\to c\gamma\gamma$ decay is also of the order of $10^{-11}$--$10^{-12}$ for LQ masses of 1.7 TeV., Comment: In preparation for Journal Submission

3. Neutrino electromagnetic properties in a Leptoquark model

Abstract

The neutrino magnetic dipole moment is studied in a simple extension of the SM augmented with a scalar Leptoquark with quantum numbers $(\bar{\boldsymbol{3}},\boldsymbol{1},1/3)$. In order to reach a sizeable neutrino magnetic moment, we include in the framework the contribution of right-handed neutrinos and analytical result for the one-loop contribution of a scalar LQ is presented. The allowed parameter space is found through recent restrictions on the muon $(g-2)$, the $\tau \to \mu \gamma$ and the $B_c \to \tau^- \bar \nu$ decay. It is shown that exist a region of the parameter space where the recent anomaly reported by the XENON collaboration can be accommodated., Comment: In preparation for Journal Submission

Abstract

The flavor changing neutral current decays $t\to c X$ ($X=\gamma,\,g,\, Z,\, H$) and $t\to c\bar \ell\ell $ ($\ell=\mu,\,\tau$) are studied in a renormalizable scalar leptoquark (LQ) model with no proton decay, where a scalar $SU(2)$ doublet with hypercharge $Y=7/6$ is added to the standard model, yielding a non-chiral LQ $\Omega_{5/3}$. Analytical results for the one-loop (tree-level) contributions of a scalar LQ to the $f_i\to f_j X$ ($f_i\to f_j \bar f_m f_l$) decays, with $f_a=q_a, \ell_a$, are presented. We consider the scenario where $\Omega_{5/3}$ couples to the fermions of the second and third families, with its right- and left-handed couplings obeying $\lambda_R^{\ell u_i}/\lambda_L^{\ell u_i}=O(\epsilon)$, where $\epsilon$ parametrizes the relative size between these couplings. The allowed parameter space is then found via the current constraints on the muon $(g-2)$, the $\tau\to \mu\gamma$ decay, the LHC Higgs boson data, and the direct LQ searches at the LHC. For $m_{\Omega_{5/3}}=1$ TeV and $\epsilon=10^{-3}$, we find that the $t\to c X$ branching ratios are of similar size and can be as large as $10^{-8}$ in a tiny area of the parameter space, whereas ${\rm Br}(t\to c\bar \tau\tau)$ [${\rm Br}(t\to c\bar \mu\mu)$] can be up to $10^{-6}$ ($10^{-7}$)., Comment: 24 pags, 10 figures, 1 table

7. Decay $\phi\to Z \gamma\gamma$ ($\phi=h, H,A$) in the minimal supersymmetric standard model

Abstract

The decays of the CP-even ($h,\,H$) and the CP-odd ($A$) Higgs bosons $h,\,H,\,A\to Z\gamma\gamma$ are calculated in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), where they are induced at the one-loop level via box and reducible Feynman diagrams. For the numerical evaluation of the branching ratios we employ the decoupling limit and consider values for the MSSM parameters still consistent with the current experimental data. We consider a particular scenario for the radiative corrections to the Higgs boson masses, dubbed hMSSM, which leads to only two free parameters, namely $m_A$ and $\tan\beta$. We found that the branching ratio of the $CP$-odd Higgs boson decay $A\to Z\gamma\gamma$ can reach values up to $10^{-8}$ for $m_A=750$ GeV, which is three order of magnitude smaller than that of the $A\to\gamma\gamma$ channel. On the other hand, the branching ratio of the $H\to Z\gamma\gamma$ decay is of the order of $10^{-7}$ for large values of $m_H$ and small values of $\tan\beta$, which is comparable with the branching ratio of the $H\to Z\gamma$ channel. As far as the branching ratio of the SM-like Higgs boson decay $h\to Z\gamma\gamma$ is concerned, it is considerably suppressed, of the order of $10^{-11}$., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures

10. Decays $A \to Z\gamma\gamma$ and $\phi \to Z\gamma\gamma$ ($\phi=h,H$) in two-Higgs doublet models

Abstract

The one-loop contributions to the decays of the $CP$-odd and $CP$-even scalar bosons $A\to Z\gamma\gamma$ and $\phi\to Z\gamma\gamma$ ($\phi=h,H$) are calculated within the framework of $CP$-conserving THDMs, where they are induced by box and reducible Feynman diagrams. The behavior of the corresponding branching ratios are then analyzed within the type-II THDM in a region of the parameter space around the alignment limit and still consistent with experimental data. It is found that the $A\to Z\gamma\gamma$ branching ratio is only relevant when $m_A>m_H+m_Z$, but it is negligible otherwise. For $m_A>600$ GeV and $t_\beta\simeq O(1)$, $BR(A\to Z\gamma\gamma)$ can reach values of the order of $10^{-5}-10^{-4}$, but it decreases by about one order of magnitude as $t_\beta$ increases up to 10. A similar behavior is followed by the $H\to Z\gamma\gamma$ decay, which only has a non-negligible branching ratio when $m_H>m_A+m_Z$ and can reach the level of $10^{-4}-10^{-3}$ for $m_H>600$ GeV and $t_\beta\simeq O(1)$. We also estimated the branching ratios of these rare decays in the type-I THDM, where they can be about one order of magnitude larger than in type-II THDM. As far as the $h\to Z\gamma\gamma$ decay is concerned, since the properties of this scalar boson must be nearly identical to those of the SM Higgs boson, the $h\to Z\gamma\gamma$ branching ratio does not deviates significantly from the SM prediction, where it is negligibly small, of the order of $10^{-9}$. Abstract

BackgroundPrevious studies have suggested that occupational exposure to styrene is associated with increased serum levels of the anterior pituitary hormone prolactin (PRL).AimsTo test the hypotheses that: (1) the effect of styrene exposure on PRL secretion is an acute effect, not a subchronic or chronic effect; (2) blood styrene, as a measure of absorbed dose, is a stronger predictor of serum PRL level than personal breathing zone air styrene concentration.MethodsSubjects were recruited from 17 workplaces in the reinforced plastics industry. Personal breathing zone air styrene, whole blood styrene, and serum PRL were measured during one to three sessions, approximately one year apart. Linear multiple regression was used to model the relations between acute (air styrene or blood styrene obtained at same time as PRL), subchronic (average air or blood styrene over two or three sessions), and chronic (years of work in industry or facility times average air styrene over all sessions) indices of styrene exposure and serum PRL.ResultsAcute blood styrene concentration was the strongest predictor of serum PRL concentration, with the model predicting a 2.06-fold increase in PRL (95% CI 1.11 to 3.84) for every 10-fold increase in blood styrene. Serum PRL tended to increase with increasing styrene exposure in both men and women; however, women tended to have higher PRL levels. For women, the change in blood styrene between sessions 1 and 2 was a significant predictor of the change in serum PRL between sessions.ConclusionsResults confirm that styrene exposure enhances serum PRL concentrations and support an acute effect of styrene on PRL secretion.

Abstract

IMPORTANCE The use of perioperative, prophylactic, intravenous antibiotics is standard practice to reduce the risk of surgical site infection after oncologic resection and complex endoprosthetic reconstruction for lower extremity bone tumors. However, evidence guiding the duration of prophylactic treatment remains limited.OBJECTIVE To assess the effect of a 5-day regimen of postoperative, prophylactic, intravenous antibiotics compared with a 1-day regimen on the rate of surgical site infections within 1 year after surgery.DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This randomized clinical superiority trial was performed at 48 clinical sites in 12 countries from January 1, 2013, to October 29, 2019. The trial included patients with a primary bone tumor or a soft tissue sarcoma that had invaded the femur or tibia or oligometastatic bone disease of the femur or tibia with expected survival of at least 1 year who required surgical management by excision and endoprosthetic reconstruction. A total of 611 patients were enrolled, and 7 were exduded for ineligibility.INTERVENTIONS A 1- or 5-day regimen of postoperative prophylactic intravenous cephalosporin (cefazolin or cefuroxime) that began within 8 hours after skin closure and was administered every 8 hours thereafter. Those randomized to the 1-day regimen received identical saline doses every 8 hours for the remaining 4 days; patients, care providers, and outcomes assessors were blinded to treatment regimen.MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The primary outcome in this superiority trial was a surgical site infection (superficial incisional, deep incisional, or organ space) classified according to the criteria established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention within 1year after surgery. Secondary outcomes included antibiotic-related complications, unplanned additional operations, oncologic and functional outcomes, and mortality.RESULTS Of the 604 patients included in the final analysis (mean [SD] age, 41.2 [21.9] years; 361 [59.8%] male; 114 [18.9%] Asian, 43 [7.1%) Black, 34 [5.6%] Hispanic, 15 [2.5%] Indigenous, 384 [63.8%] White. and 12 [2.0%] other), 293 were randomized to a 5-day regimen and 311 to a 1-day regimen. A surgical site infection occurred in 44 patients (15.0%) allocated to the 5-day regimen and in 52 patients (16.7%) allocated to the 1-day regimen (hazard ratio, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.62-1.40; P = .73). Antibiotic-related complications occurred in 15 patients (5.1%) in the 5-day regimen and in 5 patients (1.6%) allocated to the 1-day regimen (hazard ratio, 3.24; 95% CI, 1.17-8.98; P = .02). Other secondary outcomes did not differ significantly between treatment groups.CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE This randomized clinical trial did not confirm the superiority of a 5-day regimen of postoperative intravenous antibiotics over a 1-day regimen in preventing surgical site infections after surgery for lower extremity bone tumors that required an endoprosthesis. The 5-day regimen group had significantly more antibiotic-related complications.

50. Frequency and characteristics of HTLV in migrants: results from the plus Redivi collaborative network in Spain

Abstract

Introduction The objective of this study was to describe the main characteristics of migrants diagnosed with human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) infection within the +Redivi Spanish network. Methods Patients with a diagnosis of HTLV type 1 or 2 in +Redivi from October 2009 to December 2020 were included. Diagnosis was based on positive HTLV serology (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)/chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA)) with line immunoassay (LIA)/Western blot with/without polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results A total of 107/17 007 cases (0.6%) had a final diagnosis of HTLV infection: 83 (77.67%) HTLV-1 infections, 6 (5.6%) HTLV-2 infections and 18 (16.8%) non-specified. The majority (76, 71%) were female, median age was 42 years and median time from arrival to Spain until consultation was 10 years. The group included 100 (93.5%) immigrants and 7 (6.6%) visiting friends and relatives (VFR)-immigrants. Most patients were from South America (71, 66.4%), followed by Sub-Saharan Africa (15, 14%) and Central America-Caribbean (13, 12.1%). Around 90% of patients were asymptomatic at presentation and diagnosed as part of screening programs. Median duration of follow-up was 5 years (IQR 2-7). Regarding HTLV-associated conditions, 90 patients (84.2%) had none, 7 (6.5%) had tropical spastic paraparesis , 5 (4.7%) had other associated conditions (dermatitis, uveitis, pulmonary disease), 3 (2.8%) had other neurological symptoms and 2 (1.9%) had adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma. No patients with HTLV-2 had HTLV-associated conditions. Four patients (3.7%) died. Concomitant diagnoses were found in 41 (38.3%) patients, including strongyloidiasis in 15 (14%) and HIV co-infection in 4 (3.7%). In 70% of patients, screening of potential contacts was not performed/recorded. Conclusions HTLV infections (the majority due to HTLV-1) were mainly diagnosed in asymptomatic migrants from Latin America (generally long-settled immigrants and the majority female with the consequent implications for screening/prevention). A high rate of association with strongyloidiasis was found. In the majority, screening of potential contacts was not performed, representing a missed opportunity for decreasing the under diagnosis of this infection.
