A multiple-baseline across behaviors design was utilized to examine the relation between performance-based feedback (PF) and the frequency of teaching teams' use of target behaviors during observation sessions with six teachers in three inclusive preschool classrooms. Teachers increased their use of target behaviors when feedback was provided and maintained their use over time when feedback was withdrawn; however, there was considerable variability across teachers. Furthermore, teachers did not increase their use of target behaviors during covert observations--when they did not know they were being observed. The current study replicates and extends the research in this area by examining the provision of PF to teaching teams and with complex behaviors (e.g., play expansions, promoting social interactions).

Individuals with disabilities may engage in challenging behavior to escape aversive stimuli, like academic tasks or non-preferred foods. Interventions to reduce these behaviors often employ escape extinction; that is, the implementer withholds escape following challenging behavior. Escape extinction can increase risk of injury, restrict autonomy, and worsen the learner-implementer relationship. To mitigate collateral effects, interventions can use strategies without escape extinction (i.e., escape-based); that is, implementers can provide escape contingent on challenging behavior during intervention, in conjunction with other intervention components. However, no comprehensive syntheses of these interventions have been conducted. We identified 39 articles that included escape-based interventions, which contained 273 single-case designs. Escape-based interventions were associated with lower levels of challenging behavior and higher levels of adaptive behavior than baseline conditions. Most comparisons between escape-based and escape extinction interventions showed no functional relation, indicating that escape extinction may not add substantial benefit to intervention efficacy.

We examined an intervention package using peer modeling, systematic prompting, and contingent reinforcement to increase the frequency and complexity of board game play and social behaviors in young children with disabilities. Four children with or at risk for disabilities participated with their typically developing peers. Results indicated a strong functional relation given the magnitude of change across conditions and participants and robust study rigor. Minor individual adaptations were used for two of the four participants. Overall, the study extends the research on board game play interventions with young children by demonstrating the effectiveness of an intervention that was successful for a diverse sample of preschool children with or at risk for disabilities and their peers.

We examined the effectiveness of systematic prompting of peer-related behaviors delivered during small group academic instructional sessions with three dyads of preschool-aged children with deficits in social competence. One child was randomly assigned as the target child in each dyad. A multiple-probe single-case research design was utilized to examine the functional relation between a system-of-least prompts procedure and the frequency of unprompted peer-related social behaviors emitted by target children during small group instructional sessions. The results support a functional relation between systematic prompting and peer-related behaviors, and all three target children increased their use of peer-related behaviors. Furthermore, we examined the effect of intervention on the untrained peer play partner (i.e., observational learning). Two of the three peers increased their use of peer-related social behaviors; however, results were variable and did not support a functional relation. Our study extends the research in this area by examining the effectiveness of small group instruction on potentially context dependent, complex social behaviors (e.g., sharing materials, complimenting a friend, offering to help).

Research suggests peer imitation can be taught using systematic procedures and can be embedded into ongoing play contexts with preschool-age children. However, additional research is needed to test procedures that may increase levels of peer imitation with toddlers with disabilities and in generalized contexts. We used a multiple probe across participants research design to evaluate the effectiveness of progressive time delay (PTD) to teach peer imitation to preschoolers with disabilities during a play activity with a peer. We also examined the efficacy of PTD in a generalized context (i.e., new peers, implementer, and materials). Visual analysis indicated a functional relation between PTD and unprompted peer imitation; however, generalization was variable across participants. Our results support previous research indicating PTD is effective in teaching children with disabilities to imitate their peers.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of using text messaging to deliver performance-based feedback (PF) to preservice teachers working in inclusive early childhood classrooms. A multiple baseline across behaviors single-case research design was replicated across four participants to examine the relation between PF delivered via text message and preservice teachers' use of self-selected target behaviors. Results indicated text messaging was an effective method for delivering PF and subsequently increasing teacher target behaviors when individualized to meet the needs of teachers; however, results were variable across teachers.
