The TP3-WFS (Two Pupil Plane Positions Wavefront Sensor) is, to the best of the authors' knowledge, the first physical implementation of the geometrical wavefront reconstruction algorithm that has been tested in a telescope as part of an actual AO-enabled instrument. The main advantage of this algorithm is that it theoretically provides a fairly good reconstruction accuracy even under very low levels of light, in the order of a few hundreds of photons. This paper presents the first control-related results obtained at the William Herschel Telescope (WHT). As a consequence of the evolution in the design and of the modularity of its components, AOLI for the William Herschel Telescope (WHT 4.2m) is much smaller and more efficient than its previous designs. This success has leaded us to plan to condense it even more to get a portable and easy to integrate system, ALIOLI (Adaptive and Lucky Imaging Optics Lightweight Instrument). It consists of a DM+WFS module with a lucky imaging science camera attached. ALIOLI is an AO instrument for the 1-2m class telescopes which will also be used as on-sky testbench for AO developments. Here we present the Adaptive Optics Lucky Imager (AOLI), a state-of-the-art instrument which makes use of two well proved techniques, Lucky Imaging (LI) and Adaptive Optics (AO), to deliver diffraction limited imaging at visible wavelengths, 20 mas, from ground-based telescopes. Thanks to its revolutionary TP3-WFS, AOLI shall have the capability of using faint reference stars. In the extremely-big telescopes era, the combination of techniques and the development of new WFS systems seems the clue key for success. For sensitive infrared interferometry, it is crucial to control the differential piston evolution between the used telescopes. This is classically done by the use of a fringe tracker. In this work, we develop a new method to reconstruct the temporal piston variation from the atmosphere, by using real-time data from adaptive optics wavefront sensing: the Piston Reconstruction Experiment (P-REx). In order to understand the principle performance of the system in a realistic multilayer atmosphere it is first extensively tested in simulations. The gained insights are then used to apply P-REx to real data, in order to demonstrate the benefit of using P-REx as an auxiliary system in a real interferometer. All tests show positive results, which encourages further research and eventually a real implementation. Especially the tests on on-sky data showed that the atmosphere is, under decent observing conditions, sufficiently well structured and stable, in order to apply P-REx. It was possible to conveniently reconstruct the piston evolution in two-thirds of the datasets from good observing conditions (r$_0$ $\sim$ 30 cm). The main conclusion is that applying the piston reconstruction in a real system would reduce the piston variation from around 10 $\mu$m down to 1-2 $\mu$m over timescales of up to two seconds. This suggests an application for mid-infrared interferometry, for example for MATISSE at the VLTI or the LBTI. P-REx therefore provides the possibility to improve interferometric measurements without the need for more complex AO systems than already in regular use at 8m-class telescopes., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables. We present the discovery of three small planets transiting K2-136 (LP 358 348, EPIC 247589423), a late K dwarf in the Hyades. The planets have orbital periods of $7.9757 \pm 0.0011$, $17.30681^{+0.00034}_{-0.00036}$, and $25.5715^{+0.0038}_{-0.0040}$ days, and radii of $1.05 \pm 0.16$, $3.14 \pm 0.36$, and $1.55^{+0.24}_{-0.21}$ $R_\oplus$, respectively. With an age of 600-800 Myr, these planets are some of the smallest and youngest transiting planets known. Due to the relatively bright (J=9.1) host star, the planets are compelling targets for future characterization via radial velocity mass measurements and transmission spectroscopy. We present a photometric follow-up of transiting exoplanets HAT-P-3b and TrES-3b, observed by using several optical and near-infrared filters, with four small-class telescopes (D = 36--152cm) in the Northern Hemisphere. Two of the facilities present their first scientific results. New 10 HAT-P-3b light curves and new 26 TrES-3b light curves are reduced and combined by filter in order to improve the quality of the photometry. Combined light curves fitting is carried out independently by using two different analysis packages, allowing the corroboration of the orbital and physical parameters in the literature. Results find no differences in the relative radius with the observing filter. In particular, we report for HAT-P-3b a first estimation of the planet-to-star radius Rp/R* = 0.1112+0.0025-0.0026 in the B band which is coherent with values found in the VRIz'JH filters. Concerning TrES-3b, we derive a value for the orbital period of P = 1.3061862+-0.0000001 days which shows no linear variations over nine years of photometric observations., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASP; 9 pages, 6 figures, data will be published on CDS

The FastCam instrument platform, jointly developed by the IAC and the UPCT, allows, in real-time, acquisition, selection and storage of images with a resolution that reaches the diffraction limit of medium-sized telescopes. FastCam incorporates a specially designed software package to analyse series of tens of thousands of images in parallel with the data acquisition at the telescope. Wide FastCam is a new instrument that, using the same software for data acquisition, does not look for lucky imaging but fast observations in a much larger field of view. The combination of Lucky Imaging with a low order adaptive optics system was demonstrated very successfully on the Palomar 5m telescope nearly 10 years ago. It is still the only system to give such high-resolution images in the visible or near infrared on ground-based telescope of faint astronomical targets. The development of AOLI for deployment initially on the WHT 4.2 m telescope in La Palma, Canary Islands, will be described in this paper. In particular, we will look at the design and status of our low order curvature wavefront sensor which has been somewhat simplified to make it more efficient, ensuring coverage over much of the sky with natural guide stars as reference object. We report on the detection and early characterization of a hot Jupiter in a 3-day orbit around K2-34 (EPIC~212110888), a metal-rich F-type star located in the K2 Cycle 5 field. Our follow-up campaign involves precise radial velocity (RV) measurements and high-contrast imaging using multiple facilities. The absence of a bright nearby source in our high-contrast data suggests that the transit-like signals are not due to light variations from such a companion star. Our intensive RV measurements show that K2-34b has a mass of $1.773\pm0.086M_J$, confirming its status as a planet. We also detect the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for K2-34b and show that the system has a good spin-orbit alignment ($\lambda=-1_{-9}^{+10}$ degrees). High-contrast images obtained by the HiCIAO camera on the Subaru 8.2-m telescope reveal a faint companion candidate ($\Delta m_H=6.19\pm 0.11$ mag) at a separation of $0\farcs36$. Follow-up observations are needed to confirm that the companion candidate is physically associated with K2-34. Lucky Imaging combined with a low order adaptive optics system has given the highest resolution images ever taken in the visible or near infrared of faint astronomical objects. This paper describes a new instrument that has already been deployed on the WHT 4.2m telescope on La Palma, with particular emphasis on the optical design and the predicted system performance. A new design of low order wavefront sensor using photon counting CCD detectors and multi-plane curvature wavefront sensor will allow virtually full sky coverage with faint natural guide stars.
