Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the differences in digit sizes from both pelvic limbs of 169 dairy cows of different genetic groups (Holstein, Jersey, Brown Swiss, and Jersolando), in lactating and non-lactating conditions, and their relation with diseases. Images were taken from the plantar view of the lateral and medial digits, and the length and width of the sole and bulb were then measured. Variables were discarded and factors for analysis were defined. Data were defined according to the highest coefficients and used to discriminate genetic groups and their association with indexes of foot diseases and productive performance. The Chi-square test showed that higher involvement occurred in lactating cows and in the right pelvic limb. Differences among all genetic groups were observed regarding the variables body weight, productive longevity, incidence of foot diseases, and generated factors. The Jersey breed was isolated from the other genetic groups because it presented lower coefficients for all variables; Holstein and Brown Swiss presented the highest morphometric measures of the digits, a higher body weight, and productive longevity, and higher rates of foot diseases. The Jersolando presented intermediate values between those of the two breeds from which it originated. The susceptibility to foot diseases is associated with breed, lactational stage, body weight, and with the morphometric parameters of the digits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

29. Design of Monopile Foundations to Support the DTU 10 MW Offshore Wind Turbine

Abstract

Further advancements in the offshore wind industry, which come with the use of larger wind turbines at deeper water, require larger support structures. For shallow and intermediate water depths, monopile foundations still remain the most widely-used and cost-effective support structure due to the relative simplicity of fabrication and installation. The aim of this study is to investigate the challenges and feasibility of extending monopile technology for larger wind turbines and deeper water. Preliminary monopile designs to support the DTU 10 MW reference wind turbine were established for water depths 20 m, 30 m, 40 m and 50 m. For large diameter piles, applying lateral soil stiffness derived from API method underpredicts lateral deflections at both seabed and pile toe. To properly account for the pile-structure interaction and the rigid pile behaviour, lateral soil stiffness was derived using finite element software Plaxis 3D. To verify the preliminary design, ULS and FLS analyses were done using 1st order and 2nd order wave models applied with Morison’s equation. For the ULS analysis, the 2nd order wave model predicts a response which is 1.9 times higher than the 1st order prediction for a water depth of 20 m. The sum-frequency effects and higher wave particle acceleration for the 2nd order wave model explain this result. For the FLS analysis, it was found that designing monopiles for higher water depths increases contribution of hydrodynamic loads to fatigue damage. A more sophisticated wave model is desired to increase accuracy in fatigue damage prediction at deeper water. Lastly, a method for predicting total fatigue damage using a fewer number of representative sea states is introduced. A Fatigue Damage Parameter (FDP) is established to correlate fatigue damage to environmental condition by means of thrust, Hs and Tp. Abstract

Durante tres años a partir de Diciembre del 2000, se realizaron ensayos de desempeño de 48 esquemas de pintura en las ciudades de La Paz y Santa Cruz en Bolivia, dentro del Proyecto MONOPOL - IIMETMAT de la UMSA. En base a los resultados obtenidos de la caracterización de atmósferas efectuado paralelamente al estudio, es posible ratificar las diferencias medio-ambientales entre las dos ciudades. Producto de esas diferencias medioambientales, se obtuvieron desempeños en los esquemas que obedecen a estas y que revisten gran importancia al momento de seleccionar un esquema de pintura en particular para alguna de éstas atmósferas. Durante 3 anos, a partir de Dezembro de 2000, realizaram-se ensaios de desempenho de 48 esquemas de pintura nas cidades de La Paz e Santa Cruz na Bolívia, no âmbito do Projecto MONOPOL - IIMETMAT-UMSA. Com base nos resultados obtidos da caracterização de atmosferas efectuada paralelamente ao estudo, é possível verificar as diferenças ambientais entre as duas cidades. Em virtude dessas diferenças ambientais, obtiveram-se diferentes desempenhos dos esquemas de pintura. Este facto reveste-se de grande importância no momento de seleccionar um esquema de pintura para uma destas atmosferas During three years starting December of 2000, carried out performance tests of 48 paint schemes in La Paz and Santa Cruz cities in Bolivia, inside the IIMETMAT-UMSA/Monopol Project. Based on the results of atmosphere characterization, carried out at the same time of the performance tests, it is possible to ratify the environmental differences between these two cities. As product of these environmental differences, the performance of paint schemes were in the same way. It represents a very important knowledge when the selection of paints schemes must to do, for use in one of these two atmospheres.

35. Use of Embedded Sensors to Evaluate Performance of Traffic Speed Deflection Devices.

Abstract

Structural adequacy, which is an important aspect of pavement management activities, is typically evaluated using surface pavement deflections measured by the falling weight deflectometer (FWD). Technology that can collect continuous deflection data at traffic speeds can potentially supplant single-point location deflection measurements provided by the FWD for network-level pavement management system (PMS) applications. Previous studies have evaluated the traffic speed deflection devices (TSDD) performance by comparing their results with the FWD measurements. Although appropriate correlations and indices to compensate for the differences in load have been made, a direct comparison under the same loading conditions has not been reported in the literature. The purpose of this paper was to present the results of a field study to evaluate TSDDs by comparing their pavement deflection parameters with those from embedded sensors under actual loads. Two TSDDs were used in this study: the Greenwood traffic speed deflectometer (TSD), and the Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) rolling wheel deflectometer (RWD). Abstract

An analysis of the performance of a coal-biomass mixture as fuel in the energy production by a defined scheme of an integrated gasification combined cycle plant as a function of the mass ratio compositions is presented. It is important to notice that all the feedstocks are fuels available in the country. The results show the feasibility to use coal-biomass mixtures for power generation, and offers a real option to increase the power grid based on biofuels, in which potentially may reduce the utilization of coal, and thereby a feasible reduction of greenhouse and criteria pollutant emissions can be achieved.
