1. Key Experimental Considerations When Evaluating Functional Ionic Liquids for Combined Capture and Electrochemical Conversion of CO2

Abstract

Ionic liquids (ILs) are considered functional electrolytes for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 (ECO2R) due to their role in the double-layer structure formation and increased CO2 availability at the electrode surface, which reduces the voltage requirement. However, not all ILs are the same, considering the purity and degree of the functionality of the IL. Further, there are critical experimental factors that impact the evaluation of ILs for ECO2R including the reference electrode, working electrode construction, cosolvent selection, cell geometry, and whether the electrochemical cell is a single compartment or a divided cell. Here, we describe improved synthesis methods of imidazolium cyanopyrrolide IL for electrochemical studies in consideration of precursor composition and reaction time. We explored how IL with cosolvents (i.e. acetonitrile, dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, propylene carbonate, and n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) affects conductivity, CO2 mass transport, and ECO2R activation overpotential together with the effects of electrode materials (Sn, Ag, Au, and glassy carbon). Acetonitrile was found to be the best solvent for lowering the onset potential and increasing the catalytic current density for the production of CO owing to the enhanced ion mobility in combination with the silver electrode. Further, the ECO2R activity of molecular catalysts Ni(cyclam)Cl2 and iron tetraphenylsulfonato porphyrin (FeTPPS) on the carbon cloth electrode maintained high Faradaic efficiencies for CO in the presence of the IL. This study presents best practices for examining nontraditional multifunctional electrolytes amenable to integrated CO2 capture and conversion technologies for homogeneous and heterogeneous ECO2R.

3. X-ray absorption spectroscopy insights on the structure anisotropy and charge transfer in Chevrel Phase chalcogenides

Abstract

The electronic structure and local coordination of binary (Mo6T8) and ternary Chevrel Phases (MxMo6T8) are investigated for a range of metal intercalant and chalcogen compositions. We evaluate differences in the Mo L3-edge and K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure across the suite of chalcogenides MxMo6T8 (M = Cu, Ni, x = 1-2, T = S, Se, Te), quantifying the effect of compositional and structural modification on electronic structure. Furthermore, we highlight the expansion, contraction, and anisotropy of Mo6 clusters within these Chevrel Phase frameworks through extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis. Our results show that metal-to-cluster charge transfer upon intercalation is dominated by the chalcogen acceptors, evidenced by significant changes in their respective X-ray absorption spectra in comparison to relatively unaffected Mo cations. These results explain the effects of metal intercalation on the electronic and local structure of Chevrel Phases across various chalcogen compositions, and aid in rationalizing electron distribution within the structure.

4. Adsorption of perfluorooctanoic acid from water by pH-modulated Brönsted acid and base sites in mesoporous hafnium oxide ceramics

Abstract

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are increasingly appearing in drinking water sources globally. Our work focuses specifically on the adsorption of the legacy perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) using mesoporous hafnium oxide (MHO) ceramic synthesized via a sol-gel process. Experiments were performed at varying pH to determine the effect of surface charge on adsorption capacity of PFOA by MHO, and to postulate adsorption behavior. At pH 2.3, the adsorption capacity of PFOA on MHO was 20.9 mg/g, whereas at a higher pH of 6.3, it was much lower at 9.2 mg/g. This was due to increased coulombic attractions at lower pH between the positively charged conjugate acid active sites on MHO surface and negatively charged deprotonated PFOA anion in solution. After adsorption, the solid MHO was regenerated via calcination, reducing the amount of toxic solid waste to be disposed since the adsorbent is regenerated, and the PFOA is completely removed.

6. Promoting Inclusive and Culturally Responsive Teaching Using Co-Classes for General Chemistry

Abstract

The shift to remote teaching induced by the COVID-19 pandemic has increased pre-existing academic disparities in the student community, augmenting the disadvantages for students who already experience opportunity gaps. This work describes the implementation of an online chemistry co-class focused on providing educational and social support to first-generation, low-income underrepresented students enrolled in a General Chemistry course at the University of California Davis. The co-class offered concurrently with the General Chemistry course aimed to address the academic disparities induced by remote learning and the loss of classroom community during isolation. Students in the co-class were prepared academically in a smaller setup than their General Chemistry course (10-20 vs 500-600 students), which facilitated their engagement and participation in academic and community-building activities. Results from Fall 2020-Spring 2021 quarters show that students who participated in the CHE 98 co-class obtained higher grades in general, where 61% of the students received a C+ or higher in the General Chemistry course, compared to only 47% for the comparison group. Students also identified having a network of support as one of the class's strengths and had an interest in taking a similar course again. Our results highlight that providing an educational environment that is inclusive, culturally responsive, and supportive could promote equity among the student community and have a positive influence on underrepresented student retention in STEM. Therefore, the strategies discussed herein could be applied to develop analogous courses in remote and in-person teaching environments.

Abstract

An energy storage paradigm orthogonal to Li-ion battery chemistries can be conceptualized by employing anions as the primary charge carriers. F-ion conversion chemistries show promise but have limited cyclability as a result of the significant change in volume of active electrodes upon metal-metal fluoride interconversion. In contrast, the exploration of insertion chemistries has been stymied by the lack of hosts amenable to reversible F-ion insertion at room temperature. Here we show the reversible and homogeneous topochemical insertion/deinsertion and bulk diffusion of F ions within the one-dimensional tunnels of submicrometer-sized FeSb2O4 particles at room temperature. Abstract

Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have tremendous potential for reactive capture and conversion (RCC) of CO2 due to their wide electrochemical stability window, low volatility, and high CO2 solubility. There is environmental and economic interest in the direct utilization of the captured CO2 using electrified and modular processes that forgo the thermal- or pressure-swing regeneration steps to concentrate CO2, eliminating the need to compress, transport, or store the gas. The conventional electrochemical conversion of CO2 with aqueous electrolytes presents limited CO2 solubility and high energy requirement to achieve industrially relevant products. Additionally, aqueous systems have competitive hydrogen evolution. In the past decade, there has been significant progress toward the design of ILs and DESs, and their composites to separate CO2 from dilute streams. In parallel, but not necessarily in synergy, there have been studies focused on a few select ILs and DESs for electrochemical reduction of CO2, often diluting them with aqueous or non-aqueous solvents. The resulting electrode–electrolyte interfaces present a complex speciation for RCC. In this review, we describe how the ILs and DESs are tuned for RCC and specifically address the CO2 chemisorption and electroreduction mechanisms. Critical bulk and interfacial properties of ILs and DESs are discussed in the context of RCC, and the potential of these electrolytes are presented through a techno-economic evaluation. Abstract

In this paper, a six-degree-of-freedom analog tactile probe with a new, simple, and robust mechanical design is presented. Its design is based on the use of one elastomeric ring that supports the stylus carrier and allows its movement inside a cubic measuring range of ±3 mm. The position of the probe tip is determined by three low-cost, noncontact, 2D PSD (position-sensitive detector) sensors, facilitating a wider application of this probe to different measuring systems compared to commercial ones. However, several software corrections, regarding the size and orientation of the three LED light beams, must be carried out when using these 2D sensors for this application due to the lack of additional focusing or collimating lenses and the very wide measuring range. The development process, simulation results, correction models, experimental tests, and calibration of this probe are presented. The results demonstrate high repeatability along the X-, Y-, and Z-axes (2.0 µm, 2.0 µm, and 2.1 µm, respectively) and overall accuracies of 6.7 µm, 7.0 µm, and 8.0 µm, respectively, which could be minimized by more complex correction models. While Ln2O2S oxysulphides have increasingly gained attention due to their structural and optoelectronic properties, an expansive compositional space lies beyond as the sulphur-to-oxygen ratio increases. In these oxysulphides, the compounded effect of the 4f states is manifold in the lanthanoid ions and the changing bonding and environment symmetry enables the tuning of their electronic structure and photophysical properties. Their challenging syntheses have made these materials largely unexplored, but recent efforts have been made to bridge the knowledge gap. Abstract

This work presents a systematic investigation of the electrochemical intercalation of aqueous copper cations into the Chevrel phase (CP) Mo6S8 and its effect on the host's electronic and structural characteristics as a function of stoichiometry. The electrochemical potentials at which copper intercalates into the CP Mo6S8 host in 1 M CuSO4 were identified for CuxMo6S8 (x = 1–3) as 0.23 V, 0.11 V, and 0.055 V (vs. Cu/Cu2+) for Cu1Mo6S8, Cu2Mo6S8, and Cu3Mo6S8, respectively, and correlated via ex situ PXRD to stoichiometric content. Potentials were also identified that yield non-stoichiometric phases with traceable Cu content-dependent structural changes. Ab initio DFT calculations were performed to probe thermodynamic stability of CuxMo6S8 CP compositions and the metal-to-semiconductor transitions as a function of copper content. Lastly, we demonstrate that the SK-pre-edge intensity is a successful probe for intercalant content: as copper equivalents increase, so does charge transfer to the partially occupied S 3p orbitals, resulting in a decrease in the pre-edge intensity corresponding to the excitation of a S 1s-to-3p/Mo 4d hybridized orbital. Abstract

The preparation and characterization of Yucca Filifera (Asparagaceae) fibers (YFF) and their incorporation into polypropylene (PP) matrices of two molecular weights are reported. Apart from the fibers sectioning and dehydration, saponates, phenols, hemicellulose, and lignin were systematically extracted. Moisture was a primary factor in the as‐sectioned samples, and dehydration was followed by volatiles extraction, including saponates and phenols. An optimized mixture of alcohols (80% methanol/20% ethanol v/v) was used to extract the remaining volatiles (adsorbed water, phenols, and saponates). The dried fibers were then cyclically treated in an autoclave using a dilute sodium hydroxide (NaOH) with the purpose of decreasing external lignin and hemicellulose. After extractions, the fiber product was directly incorporated into PP of two molecular weights, film/fiber (PP35) and injection molding (PP11) grades. The average crystallization temperatures from the melt increased slightly in the presence of YFF as an indication of heterogeneous nucleation. Although the crystallization degree decreased perceptibly depending on the fiber content. The apparent viscosity measurements as a function of shear rate, at low fiber concentrations (10 wt%), displayed partial compatibility between the treated YFF and PP11. In contrast, high fiber concentrations (30 wt%) in PP35 showed only a range of partial compatibility at high shear rates. Mechanical elongation and bending demonstrated an increase in the corresponding moduli as an indication of fiber reinforcement with a biodegradable additive. The higher tensile modulus was obtained at the expense of mechanical deformation. With the increasing deterioration of the global climate, ushered in by fossil-fueled industrialization, a call to action is set forth to develop technologies that will transform our current manufacturing and energy landscapes into sustainable ones, where materials chemistry plays a central role. Among the biggest challenges of our time lies the realization of carbon neutral and negative emission technologies as ways to ameliorate the effects of global warming. From a materials’ perspective, this realization can be achieved by the design of efficient light absorbers that can harvest intermittent sunlight, through the development of higher capacity batteries wherein this collected energy can be stored, and by the conception of selective catalyst materials that can directly or indirectly utilize renewably-sourced energy inputs to enable the conversion of molecules, whose products can act as energy vectors or replace petroleum-derived commodities. Global population increase has highlighted the scarcity of resources, specifically energy and potable water, and emphasized the need to develop new technologies to help meet these growing needs. Additionally, the impact of the historic use of carbon-intensive fuel sources to meet energy demand has become increasingly apparent through the environmental repercussions of anthropogenic climate change. Since energy and water security intrinsically consider cost and access to resources, disruptive technologies to improve energy and water security must exhibit translatability, scalability, and low-cost. Harnessing abundant renewable energy sources such as solar, hydro, and wind is a promising solution to carbon-intensive energy production, while also providing low-cost energy. The coupling of renewable energy resources with energy-intensive and expensive water remediation processes such as reverse osmosis, can lower their costs. However, the efficient storage of intermittent renewable resources during peaks hours of production for delivery of energy during times of peak demand has proven a challenge for decades. Furthermore, the development of robust membrane materials that drastically impact the cost of water remediation, especially considering increasing water pollutants from anthropogenic activity, have yet to be realized in recent years. Abstract

The increased energy demands of the rising global population in a fossil fuel-based energy economy have caused unprecedented anthropogenic CO2 emissions, which presents a potentially irreversible threat to human societies. The imperative transition to carbon-neutral or carbon-negative energy solutions requires the interplay of advanced technologies that can provide electricity generated from renewable sources, including wind, solar, and hydropower, while also providing energy-dense liquid fuels for long-term storage. To this end, electrochemical processes such as CO2 reduction, N2 reduction and hydrogen evolution could provide chemical feedstocks and fuels currently obtained by large-scale emission processes without requiring massive changes to the present energy infrastructures. The economic viability of this approach is highly dependent on the design of catalysts from earth-abundant elements that exhibit high activity and selectivity along with chemical and catalytic stability over long periods of operation. In aqueous solutions, CO2 and N2 reduction must compete with the kinetically more facile hydrogen evolution reaction, which is one of the main challenges in achieving catalytic selectivity. Therefore, understanding hydrogen adsorption interactions on the catalyst surface can simultaneously assist in improving hydrogen evolution activity, as well as increasing selectivity for CO2 and N2 reduction reactions. To this end, compositionally diverse families of materials such as molybdenum chalcogenides (sulfides, selenides, and tellurides) offer an ideal platform to evaluate hydrogen adsorption interactions and develop composition-structure-function relationships. Abstract

The concept of sustainability aims to integrate diverse aspects of human needs through the analysis of the environmental, social, and economic dimensions. Although there is a marked consensus on the concept of sustainability, there are local conditions that define the production patterns and their actual sustainability conditions. This paper aims to integrate a research review of sustainability in the agriculture systems of Mexico with a localscale approach, highlighting the local perspectives of each region to provide a clear view of the whole country’s agriculture systems and to find the thresholds of sustainability research in the coffee regions of Mexico. To integrate the review, several databases and quotes from selected papers were used from 2012, with some baseline references from 2002, and the paper structure was developed under a narrative technique. As a result, we show a view of the sustainability research approaches at different local scales in the agriculture systems of Mexico, emphasizing coffee systems and showing the thresholds of sustainability research with these approaches.

Abstract

Water is an essential resource for all living organisms, yet it is contaminated with a wide variety of toxins that are harmful to human beings and the marine ecosystem. The two main contaminants discussed in this dissertation will be crude oil and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Crude oil enters the marine ecosystem when there is a crude oil spill on the surface of the ocean. The application of dispersant molecules causes the oil to be broken into smaller droplets which travel deeper into the ocean leading to further contamination. While crude oil affects large bodies of water, PFAS enter our drinking water streams by industrial waste, groundwater contamination, and leachate. PFAS are fluorinated carbon chains with a terminal functional group ranging from carboxylic acids, sulfuric acids, and alcohols. Unlike crude oil these molecules do not absorb visible light, and can’t be seen in drinking water but are still very toxic. There is a need for developing robust, mechanically and chemically stable adsorbent materials to treat these contaminants in our water sources. This dissertation discusses the sol-gel synthesis of an understudied ceramic mesoporous hafnium oxide (MHO) for the adsorption of crude oil as well as PFAS. The MHO is chemically stable due to the variety of surface functional groups, thermally stable due to the fact that it is synthesized at high temperature (700°C), and has a bimodal pore network with both macropores (>50 nm), and mesopores (2-50 nm) that allow for rapid water flux and entrapment of contaminants respectively. Chapter 1 aims to provide an introduction to challenges faced by our marine environments today by discussing effects of crude oil spills on the marine ecosystem, and impacts of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on our environment.
