Located in the most southwestern region of Europe, the aspiring Geopark Algarvensis is an inspiring territory that aims to contribute to greater social and territorial cohesion of three municipalities, Loulé, Silves and Albufeira, through valuing the territory, based on UNESCO Geopark concept, with the support of the University of Algarve. This is an integrative project that promotes greater appreciation and promotion of heritage local and regional at an international level, intending above all to contribute to the preservation of its geological and cultural heritage. Its mission is to promote, protect andenhancethe natural and cultural heritage, highlighting the geological heritage, through the creation of scientific and educational knowledge, in order to provide socio-economic development and sustainable development of the territory, settling people and promoting their quality of life.

This presentation aims to present the board game " The adventure to knowledge " as a tool to facilitate the teaching-learning process. It was created to help the dissemination and communication of science in the context of an international and interdisciplinary research project that studies the environmental changes that have occurred over the last 7500 years in the southeast coast of Mozambique. In the game, each player is invited to take on the role of a researcher participating in a fieldwork where they will create knowledge to write a book. To do so, he/she will need material and human resources to analyze several paleoenvironmental indicators, and the speed with which he/she will do so will depend on several constraints. In the last decade, GIS programs allowed to focus on the dissemination of international, national, and municipal data making them available for consultation or for download and future processing by the population. Several geoportals can be used to share the information, as Internet-based geospatial resources, allowing users to discover, view and access geospatial information and services provided by a wide range of organisations. From this data there are unlimited options for analysis by users, including students and teachers, such as making maps, 3D models and other applications. The Algarvensis aUGGp is relying on this technology for various purposes ranging from scientific site assessment and categorization, to educational and touristic engagement. Here, we present examples of practical applications based on GIS information, such as storymaps, digital terrain models in 3D and touristic maps. Storymaps are based on web applications that allow to tell a story in a dynamic way combining geographical maps with text and other multimedia contents. These applications are increasingly used in scientific dissemination, as well as educational tool within a wide range of themes. They have thus also great potential to enable the awareness about the geoparks and the geosites values to all the public in an interactive and appealing way as well as to support stakeholders and policy makers’ action and management decisions for conservation. Digital educational resource can also be used to explore the geosite during the pedestrian trails, but also as a virtual field trip in a classroom context, for instance. The plateau is deeply scarved by the Quarteira Rivulet forming a valley that crosses the most complete sedimentary sequence of the Upper Jurassic of the Eastern Algarve (161,2 to 145,5 million years) (Terrinha et al., 2006). This sequence includes five geological formations representing different depths of carbonate ramp deposition from the Tethys Sea: Peral Formation, Jordana Formation, Cerro da Cabeça Formation, Escarpão Formation and Limestone Formation with Anchispirocyclina lusitanica (foraminifera), from the oldest to the most recent at the top (Fig. 2) (Leinfelder et al., 2005; Ramalho,2015; Terrinha et al., 2006). Throughout the Quaternary Period, the karst processes shaped a landscape of sparse and poor soils in which successive generations knew how to adapt their subsistence agriculture and way of life.

The aspiring Geopark Algarvensis Loulé-Silves-Albufeira to UNESCO World Geopark has a geological heritage of great importance at the national and international levels. In the area that encompasses the municipality of Silves, there are 6 walking routes in a total length of 80km. These were not planned to promote the geology however they allow the visitors to make a journey in the geological and landscape interpretation from the geologic record. The geological cartography available at a scale of 1:100 000 makes a detailed interpretation difficult. In this sense, a geological survey was carried out at a scale of 1:15 000 along each of the pedestrian paths. This geological survey and adaptation were made based on the existing one. This "update" of the geologic map allows the creation of a list of sites or places of geological interest. In the most important sites, a mark on the field with a QR code will be installed. Based on all the elements surveyed along the hiking paths a story map is being created allowing a virtual tour of the geopark territory.

The aspiring UNESCO World Geopark Algarvensis Loulé-Silves-Albufeira is an area in the south of Portugal (total area of 1381 km2), in the center of the Algarve region, on which, part of the counties of Loulé, Silves and Albufeira, are included. The geodiversity of the aspiring Geopark Algarvensis Loulé-Silves-Albufeira tells the story of 350 million years of Earth's history and more than 20 thousand years of the history of human occupation. With clear and defined limits, it has a geological heritage of major importance, at national and international levels, and allies a geoconservation strategy and a set of environmental education and awareness policies, to the promotion of sustainable socio-economic development based on geotourism activities, involving local communities, contributing to the valorization and promotion of local products and producers. With the aim of enriching and stimulating the territory of the aspiring Geopark Algarvensis-Loulé-Silves-Albufeira to become an UNESCO World Geopark, the multidisciplinary intervention program Geopalcos Art.Science.Nature happened between May and September 2021. Geopalcos Art.Science.Nature has been designed as a biannual event that connects art, science and nature with and for the people at the territory of the aspiring Geopark. This event was born from the collaboration and participation of local populations and from a challenge to artists and scientists to think the territory as a place of creation, reflection, disquiet and dazzle. The intention was to lead a nature lover to discover art and science, an art fan to stroll through nature and the paths of knowledge, or even a curious person to relate their knowledge to natural beauty. The activities that materialized Geopalcos in its first edition were diverse, such as, site-specific performances, artistic installations, pathways-experiences, exhibitions, disciplinary intersections with manual arts, theatrical creations, concerts, workshops and training sessions, among other cultural and artistic events created by local artists, in collaboration and dialogue with the local community. The success of the event is reflected by more than 3125 participants for 12 concerts, 6 exhibitions, 7 workshops, 12 walking tours, 4 artistic installations, 4 roundtables, 11 educational activities and 3 theatrical creations, involving overall more than 180 artists from the Algarvensis Aspiring Geopark territory.

Accordingly, we developed, in the context of the Algarvensis aspiring Geopark, a Story Map regarding the walking path - PR4 Escarpão Plateau, in which the history of this geomorphological entity is told, and suggestions are made on how to explore it in several locations along the 8 km route. This digital educational resource can be used to explore the geosite during the walking route, but also as a virtual field trip in a classroom context.

The Escarpão Plateau, offers the possibility to observe and study the most complete sedimentary sequence of the Upper Jurassic of the Eastern Algarve (161,2 to 145,5 million years). Five geological formations are exposed along the Escarpão Plateau, from the oldest at the bottom of the valley of the Quarteira rivulet, to the most recent at the top: Peral Formation, Jordana Formation, Cerro da Cabeça Formation, Escarpão Formation and Limestone Formation with Anchispirocyclina lusitanica (foraminifera). Together, they bear witness to the carbonate ramp deposition of tepid waters of the Tethys domain, when present day Europe was still a mere set of islands. Throughout the Quaternary Period, the karst processes shaped a landscape of sparse and poor soils in which successive generations knew how to adapt their subsistence agriculture and way of life. How should this type of geosite be promoted? The Algarvensis aspiring geopark opted to create several walking paths, among them, the 8 km path across the Escarpão Plateau passing though 11 points of interest, including biosites and geosites (with interpretative boards) and having a view to the surrounding cultural and historical heritage. This path will also be accompanied by an audioguide, so that the walker can embrace the sounds and the history of this geosite along the way. Furthermore, the geosite was promoted by the Portuguese Geologists Association by fieldwork and the formation of 70 national secondary teachers and by the Science Centre of Algarve as a reference for Summer Science activities about paleoecology, using corals and other fossils as proxies. The communication with the community has also been increased to get their opinions and their collaboration in the application for UNESCO Global Geopark.

Although quantitative isotope data from speleothems has been used to evaluate isotope-enabled model simulations, currently no consensus exists regarding the most appropriate methodology through which to achieve this. A number of modelling groups will be running isotope-enabled palaeoclimate simulations in the framework of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6, so it is timely to evaluate different approaches to using the speleothem data for data-model comparisons. Here, we illustrate this using 456 globally distributed speleothem delta O-18 records from an updated version of the Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and Analysis (SISAL) database and palaeoclimate simulations generated using the ECHAM5-wiso isotope-enabled atmospheric circulation model. We show that the SISAL records reproduce the first-order spatial patterns of isotopic variability in the modern day, strongly supporting the application of this dataset for evaluating model-derived isotope variability into the past. However, the discontinuous nature of many speleothem records complicates the process of procuring large numbers of records if data-model comparisons are made using the traditional approach of comparing anomalies between a control period and a given palaeoclimate experiment. To circumvent this issue, we illustrate techniques through which the absolute isotope values during any time period could be used for model evaluation. Specifically, we show that speleothem isotope records allow an assessment of a model's ability to simulate spatial isotopic trends. Our analyses provide a protocol for using speleothem isotope data for model evaluation, including screening the observations to take into account the impact of speleothem mineralogy on delta O-18 values, the optimum period for the modern observational baseline and the selection of an appropriate time window for creating means of the isotope data for palaeo-time-slices. Durante el periodo romano (siglo III a.C.-siglo V d.C.), las zonas próximas a la actual desembocadura del río Guadalquivir estaban ocupadas por una laguna interior con conexión marina, a partir de la interpretación paleoambiental de las asociaciones de foraminíferos bentónicos obtenidos en un sondeo situado en el Parque Nacional de Doñana. Sus zonas internas estaban ocupadas por llanuras mareales arcillosas, que sufrieron los efectos de una tormenta hacia finales del siglo I d.C. La comparación con los ostrácodos del mismo sondeo confirma esta recons­trucción y los datos paleogeográficos aportados por diversos cronistas, si bien estos microcrustáceos detectan de manera más precisa los cambios paleoambientales en estos medios litorales. À escala global, a conjugação das atividades humanas com o rápido incremento da população e os sucessivos avanços tecnológicos exercem uma crescente pressão sobre os ambientes marinhos. Atualmente, o lixo marinho é uma das maiores ameaças à vitalidade do Oceano Global: leva à destruição de habitats, à mortalidade de várias espécies, a efeitos adversos na nossa saúde e à quebra geral da produtividade económica providenciada pelo mar. Foi tendo em conta a magnitude e as consequências da disseminação do lixo marinho e a exposição que a região do Algarve tem ao problema, que o Centro Ciência Viva de Tavira assumiu a coordenação do Projeto A Minha Praia, entre Agosto de 2018 e Julho de 2019: um projeto de monitorização ambiental e de sensibilização para a conservação do meio marinho e promoção de hábitos de consumo sustentáveis, através de ações de civismo ambiental e de ciência cidadã. O Projeto A Minha Praia foi um dos vencedores da primeira edição do Orçamento Participativo Portugal (OPP) em 2017, e a sua execução foi garantida pela colaboração entre os três Centros Ciência Viva (CCVs) da região, com o envolvimento de várias entidades regionais e nacionais. Com este projeto, criou-se uma rede de monitorização do lixo marinho em seis praias do Algarve, na qual o público escolar e as camadas mais jovens da região realizaram ações periódicas de sensibilização para a problemática do lixo marinho, sua origem e alcance, bem como a sua catalogação e recolha. O lixo recolhido foi triado e classificado de acordo com a metodologia OSPAR, produzindo informação que foi entregue à Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente, a entidade responsável pela monitorização do lixo marinho em Portugal. O Projeto A Minha Praia também apresenta uma vertente técnica, já que nos CCVs aproveitamos para demonstrar que o plástico, que é o maior componente do lixo encontrado no mar e zonas costeiras, deve ser encarado como um matéria-prima a ser aproveitada, reciclada e transformada em novos objetos de carácter prático ou artístico que prolongam a vida útil deste material., Concretização deste poster no âmbito do projecto OPP-A Minha Praia (OPP220/437), financiado pela Ciência Viva - Agência Nacional para a Cultura Científica e Tecnológica e pela FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia

A Villa de Milreu é um exemplo do modelo de ocupação romana da região da Iberia, centrada na exploração dos recursos agrícolas, marinhos e na produção de bens alimentares, que eram exportados por via marítima para os portos do Império. O Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve traz “experiências” às ruínas de Milreu pelo quinto ano consecutivo, momento em que pela primeira vez promovemos atividades noturnas. Com as atividades deste ano, propomo-nos proporcionar aos participantes “viagens“ tetradimensionais: no espaço, no tempo, na história e no conhecimento. Pretendemos pois que as Ruínas Romanas de Milreu funcionem como a matriz para todas estas “viagens”, e que se assumam como escolas informais e oficinas de promoção de conhecimento e de desenvolvimento de competências em todos os indivíduos envolvidos (público e participantes). No contexto da exploração das atividades de cariz prático “mãos na massa” que iremos implementar, serão abordados por isso tópicos de arquitetura, química, física, engenharia, cálculo e astronomia, entre outros. Assim, partindo-se da apresentação e debate dos saberes existentes à época romana, procurará proporcionar-se a compreensão e evidenciar a contribuição desses saberes à luz dos conceitos científicos contemporâneos. Um ano de escola n’A Minha Praia – sensibilização para a problemática do lixo marinho utilizando a ciência-cidadã como ferramenta O Algarve reúne um conjunto de características que o tornam particularmente vulnerável à presença de lixo marinho e aos seus efeitos nefastos: uma orla costeira longa (aprox. 200km), um destino turístico muito popular, uma população residente concentrada no litoral e uma fração significativa da sociedade cuja subsistência depende de atividades económicas ligadas ao mar (pesca, marisqueio, extração de sal, passeios turísticos, etc.). Foi tendo em conta a magnitude e as consequências da propagação do lixo marinho na região que o Centro Ciência Viva de Tavira coordenou o projeto A Minha Praia, um dos vencedores da primeira edição do Orçamento Participativo Portugal (OPP) em 2017, e cuja execução foi garantida pela colaboração entre os três Centros Ciência Viva (CCVs) no Algarve, com o envolvimento de várias entidades regionais e nacionais. Este projeto permitiu que cerca de 933 alunos provenientes de 17 escolas fossem sensibilizados para a conservação do meio marinho, para hábitos de consumo sustentáveis e para o civismo ambiental, em simultâneo com ações de ciência-cidadã, nas quais periodicamente monitorizavam a presença de lixo marinho em seis praias da costa sul do Algarve. Ainda dentro da função didática do projeto, demonstramos a valorização do plástico (que é o maior componente do lixo marinho), aproveitando-o, reciclando-o e transformando-o em novos objetos que prolongam a sua utilidade., Esta apresentação foi dinamizada no âmbito do projecto OPP-A Minha (OPP220/437), financiado pela Ciência Viva - Agência Nacional para a Cultura Científica e Tecnológica e pela FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia.

Desplastificar Atividades e Mentalidades A temática do plástico como “lixo”, especialmente em meio aquático, passou, recentemente, a estar em primeiro plano, tanto na comunicação social como nos meios educativos. É, sem qualquer dúvida, um sinal e um legado da nossa sociedade. Estamos dependentes deste material tanto como estamos dos combustíveis fósseis e quase tanto como estamos da eletricidade. Atualmente, com a aprovação da Diretiva Europeia, que visa reduzir drasticamente o plástico “de uso único” e que tem dois anos para ser transposta pelos Estados Membros, é provável que as pessoas se sintam inseguras quanto às alternativas, quer materiais quer comportamentais, que terão de adotar. Desde sempre na escola se trabalhou esta problemática e se fizeram atividades onde se produzem objetos, mais ou menos úteis ou artísticos, com materiais a que costumamos chamar “lixo”. No entanto, e apesar de manifesta boa vontade e intuito educativo, é frequente estas atividades abordarem o problema de forma muito superficial ou, por vezes, até errada. UUm Centro Ciência Viva tem, como principal vocação e objetivo, levar o conhecimento científico às comunidades e, de forma privilegiada, à comunidade escolar, seja aos alunos diretamente, seja aos professores. Desde há já alguns anos, o Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve (CCVAlg) tem feito um esforço muito grande para reduzir ao máximo a utilização de plásticos descartáveis. Este esforço não se ficou pela adaptação das nossas atividades e substituição de materiais. Desde há quatro anos que foram reconvertidas atividades que, de alguma forma, abordavam esta problemática e que foram criadas outras, especificamente dedicadas à sensibilização ou a técnicas simplificadas de amostragem e análise dentro deste tema. Para além de uma oferta educativa onde estas atividades estão abrangidas, o CCVAlg esteve e está envolvido atualmente em vários projetos dedicados à questão do lixo marinho ou áreas relacionadas, ou em projetos onde optamos por usar esta temática como ponto central. Seja como dinamizador, recorrendo a um enorme leque de parceiros que vai desde escolas e municípios, a entidades estatais e universidades, passando por associações e empresas, seja como parceiro de outras entidades proponentes, esta é batalha que assumimos e em que temos como objetivo transmitir conhecimento e mudar atitudes e mais do que tudo, pelo exemplo dado. Esta apresentação dará conta da forma como estamos a fazer este esforço e de como nos estamos a adaptar a uma nova e incontornável realidade. O nosso objetivo ao partilhar este testemunho é, primeiro que tudo, fomentar o diálogo e a ação entre os professores e restante comunidade educativa. Para além disso, espera-se que esta comunicação possa sensibilizar para a real premência e gravidade do problema e servir de base a outras e inovadoras iniciativas por parte dos docentes e das escolas.

Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve (CCVAlg) is an Interactive Science Museum located in southern Portugal, which mission is to promote scientific and technological culture among the population and especially the youth community. Besides the interactive modules in the permanent exhibition, we design and deploy a wide range of science activities inside and outside our facilities. However, as we are nowadays facing a society (and a science environment) more and more “digital”, the use of technological tools and channels to carry out this mission cannot be ignored, otherwise it will give a biased and obsolete view of today´s reality regarding the techniques and methodologies that the XXI century scientific community uses. On this basis, CCVAlg´s strategy for the last couple of years has been to try to overcome such technological gap introducing and developing new methodologies for our activities. Having this in mind, we approached a Portuguese hardware manufacturer and achieved to forge a partnership that granted 10 detachable tablets with several specific sensors and add-ons that allowed us to design new and innovative outreach activities. The integration of the received devices into the Center´s educational offer allowed us to diversify the pedagogical offer and to involve cerca 3300 participants in the new activities. Vencedor da 1ª edição do Orçamento Participativo Portugal (2017), A Minha Praia é um projeto de monitorização ambiental que pretende sensibilizar para a conservação do meio marinho e estimular hábitos de consumo responsáveis, através de ações de ciência cidadã e civismo ambiental., SFRH/BGCT/135195/2017

A multidisciplinar analysis of sediments collected in different environments of the Doñana National Park (Guadalquivir estuary, SW Spain) provides an overview of the textural, mineralogical and physico-chemical parameters that control the distribution of benthic foraminifera in this Biosphere Reserve. These microorganisms are absent in the fine quartzitic sands that constitute the substrate of temporary ponds with brief hydroperiods located in the dune systems and spits, as well as in other ponds with low conductivities or hypersaline conditions located in the inner marshland or near the Guadalquivir river banks. Benthic foraminifera are mainly found on phyllosilicate-rich, silty-clayey substrates, where cluster analysis permits to delimitate six foraminiferal assemblages. Cluster II (Ammonia inflata + Haynesina germanica) is the dominant assemblage in the central ponds and the margins of the main channels, while cluster IV (Trochammina inflata + Entzia macrescens) is restricted to some ponds located on the high marsh and cluster VI (Ammonia beccarii + Quinqueloculina spp.) is abundant on external beaches. Tidal fluxes cause the transport of marine species both to the inner areas of the estuary and to these beaches.
