The expanding molecular ring (EMR) manifests itself as a parallelogram in the position-velocity diagram of spectral line emission from the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) surrounding the Galacic centre (GC). Using multiwavelength data, we investigate the gas kinematics, star formation activity, and the presence of shocked gas in a 200 pc long high velocity gas stream (V~ +150 km/s) with a double helix morphology named the helix stream, that is located 15-55 pc above the CMZ and is kinematically associated with the EMR/parallelogram. We carried out molecular line observations using the IRAM 30m, Yebes 40m, and APEX 12m telescopes. The detection of four rotational transitions of the SiO molecule indicate the presence of shocks. We derived the SiO column densities and abundances in different regions of the helix stream. The presence of protostellar clumps and a candidate HII region signify the ongoing star formation activity within the helix stream. The cloud is massive (2.5x10^6 M_sun) and highly turbulent. We find evidence of cloud-cloud collisions towards the eastern edge (l~1.3{\deg}), suggesting a dynamic interaction with the CMZ. An expanding shell is detected within the cloud with radius of 6.7 pc and an expansion velocity of 35 km/s. The shell might be powered by several supernovae or a single hypernova. The SiO abundance within the helix stream implies extensive shock processes occurring on large scales. The helical or cork-screw velocity structure of the helix stream indicates twisting and turning motions within the cloud. We propose that the helix stream is the continuation of the near side bar lane, that is overshooting after brushing the CMZ. The GLOSTAR survey studies star formation with the VLA and the Effelsberg 100m telescope in the Galactic plane (-2d

Studies of Galactic HII regions are of crucial importance for studying star formation and the evolution of the interstellar medium. Gaining an insight into their physical characteristics contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of these phenomena. The GLOSTAR project aims to provide a GLObal view on STAR formation in the Milky Way by performing an unbiased and sensitive survey. This is achieved by using the extremely wideband (4{-}8 GHz) C-band receiver of the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array and the Effelsberg 100 m telescope. Using radio recombination lines observed in the GLOSTAR survey with the VLA in D-configuration with a typical line sensitivity of 1{\sigma} {\sim} 3.0 mJy beam{^-1} at {\sim} 5 km s{^-1} and an angular resolution of 25", we cataloged 244 individual Galactic HII regions and derived their physical properties. We examined the mid-infrared (MIR) morphology of these HII regions and find that a significant portion of them exhibit a bubble-like morphology in the GLIMPSE 8 {\mu}m emission. We also searched for associations with the dust continuum and sources of methanol maser emission, other tracers of young stellar objects, and find that 48\% and 14\% of our HII regions, respectively, are coextensive with those. We measured the electron temperature for a large sample of HII regions within Galactocentric distances spanning from 1.6 to 13.1 kpc and derived the Galactic electron temperature gradient as {\sim} 372 {\pm} 28 K kpc{^-1} with an intercept of 4248 {\pm} 161 K, which is consistent with previous studies., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Deuterated molecules and their molecular D/H-ratios (RD(D)) are important diagnostic tools to study the physical conditions of star-forming regions. The degree of deuteration, RD(D), can be significantly enhanced over the elemental D/H-ratio depending on physical parameters. Within the Cygnus Allscale Survey of Chemistry and Dynamical Environments (CASCADE), we aim to explore the large-scale distribution of deuterated molecules in the nearby Cygnus-X region. We focus on the analysis of large-scale structures of deuterated molecules in the filamentary region hosting the prominent Hii region DR21 and DR21(OH). Here we discuss the HCO+, HNC and HCN molecules and their deuterated isotopologues DCO+, DNC and DCN. The spatial distributions of integrated line emissions from DCO+, DNC, and DCN reveal morphological differences. DCO+ displays the most extended emission, characterized by several prominent peaks. Likewise, DNC exhibits multiple peaks, although its emission appears less extended compared to DCO+. In contrast to the extended emission of DCO+ and DNC, DCN appears the least extended, with distinct peaks. Focusing only on the regions where all three molecules are observed, the mean deuteration ratios for each species are 0.01 for both DNC and DCN, and = 0.005 for DCO+. Anti-correlations are found with deuterated molecules and dust temperature or N(H2). The strongest anti-correlation is found with RD(DCO+) and N(H2). The anti-correlation of RD(DCO+) and N(H2) is suggested to be a result of a combination of an increased photodissociation degree and shocks. A strong positive correlation between the ratio of integrated intensities of DCN and DNC with their 13C-isotopologues, are found in high column density regions. The positive relationship between the ratios implies that the D-isotopologue of the isomers could potentially serve as a tracer for the kinetic gas temperature., Comment: 24 pages, 21 figures, accepted to A&A

To study the impact of the initial effects of metallicity (i.e., the abundance of elements heavier than helium) on star formation and the formation of different molecular species, we searched for hot molecular cores in the sub-solar metallicity environment of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We conducted an ALMA Band 6 observations of 20 fields centered on young stellar objects (YSOs) distributed over the LMC in order to search for hot molecular cores in this galaxy. We detected a total of 65 compact 1.2 mm continuum cores in the 20 ALMA fields and analyzed their spectra with XCLASS software. The main temperature tracers are CH3OH and SO2, with more than two transitions detected in the observed frequency ranges. Other molecular lines with high detection rates in our sample are CS , SO, H13CO+, H13CN, HC15 N, and SiO. More complex molecules, such as HNCO, HDCO, HC3N, CH3CN, and NH2CHO, and multiple transitions of SO and SO2 isotopologues showed tentative or definite detection toward a small subset of the cores. According to the chemical richness of the cores and high temperatures from the XCLASS fitting, we report the detection of four hot cores and one hot core candidate. With one new hot core detection in this study, the number of detected hot cores in the LMC increases to seven. Six out of seven hot cores detected in the LMC to date are located in the stellar bar region of this galaxy. These six hot cores show emission from complex organic molecules (COMs), such as CH3OH, CH3CN, CH3OCHO, and CH3OCH3. The only known hot core in the LMC with no detection of COMs is located outside the bar region. The metallicity in the LMC presents a shallow gradient increasing from outer regions toward the bar. We suggest that the formation of hot molecular cores containing COMs ensues from the new generation of stars forming in the more metal-rich environment of the LMC bar.

As part of the GLOSTAR (GLObal view of STAR formation in the Milky Way) survey, we present the high-resolution continuum source catalog for the regions (l = 2-28, 36-40, 56-60, &|b|<1.0), observed with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in its B-configuration. The continuum images are optimized to detect compact sources on angular scales up to 4", and have a typical noise level of 1sigma ~ 0.08mJy/beam for an angular resolution of 1", which makes GLOSTAR currently the highest resolution as well as the most sensitive radio survey of the northern Galactic plane at 4-8GHz. We extracted 13354 sources above a threshold of 5sigma and 5437 sources above 7sigma that represent the high-reliability catalog. We determined the in-band spectral index (alpha) for the sources in the 7sigma-threshold catalog. The mean value is alpha=-0.6, which indicates that the catalog is dominated by sources emitting non-thermal radio emission. We identified the most common source types detected in radio surveys: 251 HII region candidates (113 new), 282 planetary nebulae (PNe) candidates (127 new), 784 radio star candidates (581 new), and 4080 extragalactic radio source candidates (2175 new). A significant fraction of HII regions and PNe candidates have alpha<-0.1 indicating that these candidates could contain radio jets, winds or outflows from high-mass and low-mass stellar objects. We identified 245 variable radio sources by comparing the flux densities of compact sources from the GLOSTAR survey and the Co-Ordinated Radio `N' Infrared Survey for High-mass star formation (CORNISH), and find that most of them are infrared quiet. The catalog is typically 95% complete for point sources at a flux density of 0.6 mJy (i.e. typical 7sigma level) and the systematic positional uncertainty is <= 0.1". The application of silicon monoxide (SiO) as a shock tracer arises from its propensity to occur in the gas phase as a result of shock-induced phenomena, including outflow activity and interactions between molecular clouds and expanding HII regions or supernova remnants. We searched for indications of shocks toward 366 massive star-forming regions by observing the ground rotational transition of SiO ($v=0$, $J=1-0$) at 43 GHz with the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) 21 m telescopes to extend our understanding on the origins of SiO in star-forming regions. We detected SiO emission toward 104 regions that consist of 57 IRDCs, 21 HMPOs, and 26 UCHIIs. The determined median SiO column density, $N$(SiO), and abundance, $X$(SiO), relative to $N$(H$_2$) are $8.12\times10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ and $1.28\times10^{-10}$, respectively. These values are similar to those obtained toward other star-forming regions and also consistent with predicted values from shock models with low-velocity shocks ($\lesssim$10 - 15 km s$^{-1}$). While the $X$(SiO) does not exhibit any strong correlation with the evolutionary stages of their host clumps, $L_{\rm SiO}$ is highly correlated with dust clump mass, and $L_{\rm SiO}/L_{\rm bol}$ also has a strong negative correlation with $T_{\rm dust}$. This shows that colder and younger clumps have high $L_{\rm SiO}/L_{\rm bol}$ suggestive of an evolutionary trend. This trend is not due to excess emission at higher velocities, such as SiO wing features, as the colder sources with high $L_{\rm SiO}/L_{\rm bol}$ ratios lack wing features. Comparing SiO emission with H$_2$O and Class I CH$_3$OH masers, we find a significant correlation between $L_{\rm SiO}$/$L_{\rm bol}$ and $L_{\rm CH_3OH}/L_{\rm bol}$ ratios, whereas no similar correlation is seen for the H$_2$O maser emission. Cygnus X is one of the closest and most active high-mass star-forming regions in our Galaxy, making it one of the best laboratories for studying massive star formation. As part of the GLOSTAR Galactic plane survey, we performed large scale simultaneous H$_{2}$CO (1$_{1,0}$-1$_{1,1}$) spectral line and radio continuum imaging observations toward Cygnus X at $\lambda\sim$6 cm with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array and the Effelsberg-100 m radio telescope. Our Effelsberg observations reveal widespread H$_{2}$CO (1$_{1,0}$-1$_{1,1}$) absorption with a spatial extent of $\gtrsim$50 pc in Cygnus~X for the first time. On large scales of 4.4 pc, the relative orientation between local velocity gradient and magnetic field tends to be more parallel at H$_{2}$ column densities of $\gtrsim$1.8$\times 10^{22}$~cm$^{-2}$. On the smaller scale of 0.17 pc, our VLA+Effelsberg combined data reveal H$_{2}$CO absorption only toward three bright H{\scriptsize II} regions. Our observations demonstrate that H$_{2}$CO (1$_{1,0}$-1$_{1,1}$) is commonly optically thin. Kinematic analysis supports the assertion that molecular clouds generally exhibit supersonic motions on scales of 0.17-4.4 pc. We show a non-negligible contribution of the cosmic microwave background radiation in producing extended absorption features in Cygnus X. Our observations suggest that H$_{2}$CO ($1_{1,0}-1_{1,1}$) can trace molecular gas with H$_{2}$ column densities of $\gtrsim 5 \times 10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$. The ortho-H$_{2}$CO fractional abundance with respect to H$_{2}$ has a mean value of 7.0$\times 10^{-10}$. A comparison of velocity dispersions on different linear scales suggests that the dominant $-3$ km s$^{-1}$ velocity component in the prominent DR21 region has nearly identical velocity dispersions on scales of 0.17-4.4 pc, which deviates from the expected behavior of classic turbulence., Comment: 27 pages, 23 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We report the discovery of a velocity coherent, funnel shaped ^13CO emission feature in the Galactic centre (GC) using data from the SEDIGISM survey. The molecular cloud appears as a low velocity structure (V_LSR=[-3.5, +3.5] km/s) with an angular extent of 0.95{\deg} x 1{\deg}, extending toward positive Galactic latitudes. The structure is offset from Sgr A* toward negative Galactic longitudes and spatially and morphologically correlates well with the northern lobe of the 430 pc radio bubble, believed to be the radio counterpart of the multiwavelength GC chimney. Spectral line observations in the frequency range of 85-116 GHz have been carried out using the IRAM 30 metre telescope toward 12 positions along the funnel-shaped emission. We examine the ^12C/^13C isotopic ratios using various molecules and their isotopologues. The mean ^12C/^13C isotope ratio (30.6+-2.9) is consistent with the structure located within inner 3 kpc of the Galaxy and possibly in the GC. The velocity of the molecular funnel is consistent with previous radio recombination line measurements of the northern lobe of radio bubble. Our multiwavelength analysis suggests that the funnel shaped structure extending over 100 pc above the Galactic plane is the molecular counterpart of the northern GC chimney., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letters

Hub-filament systems (HFSs) are potential sites of formation of star clusters and high mass stars. To understand the HFSs and to provide observational constraints on current theories that attempt to explainstar formation globally, we report a study of the region associated with G326.27-0.49 using infrared data of dust continuum and newly obtained observations on molecular tracers using the APEX telescope. We use the spectroscopic observations to identify velocity-coherent structures (filaments and clumps) and study their properties at a resolution of 0.4 pc. The region contains two main velocity components: first component shows four filaments between -63 and -55 km/s forming a spiral structure converging in a hub, the second filamentary component at -72 km/s harbors a massive young stellar object and possibly interacts with the hub. The clumps harbouring the three main YSOs in the region are massive (187-535 Msun), have luminosities consistent with B-type stars, have central densities of ~10^6 cm^-3 and drive large outflows. Majority of the velocity-coherent clumps in the region show virial parameters between 2-7, which considering the detection of protostars implies collapse to be gradual. We conclude that the region consists of a network of filaments through which mass accretes (~10^-4 Msun/yr) onto the hub. The hub and some of the ends of filaments appear to be undergoing collapse to form new stars. As a complement to the HyGAL Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy Legacy Program, we report the results of a ground-based absorption line survey of simple molecules in diffuse and translucent Galactic clouds. Using the Institut de Radioastronomie Millim\'etrique (IRAM) 30 m telescope, we surveyed molecular lines in the 2 mm and 3 mm wavelength ranges toward 15 millimeter continuum sources. These sources, which are all massive star-forming regions located mainly in the first and second quadrants of the Milky Way, form the subset of the HyGAL sample that can be observed by the IRAM 30 m telescope. We detected HCO$^+$ absorption lines toward 14 sightlines, toward which we identified 78 foreground cloud components, as well as lines from HCN, HNC, C$_2$H, and c-C$_3$H$_2$ toward most sightlines. In addition, CS and H$_2$S absorption lines are found toward at least half of the continuum sources. Static Meudon photodissociation region (PDR) isobaric models that consider ultraviolet-dominated chemistry were unable to reproduce the column densities of all seven molecular species by just a factor of a few, except for H$_2$S. The inclusion of other formation routes driven by turbulent dissipation could possibly explain the observed high column densities of these species in diffuse clouds. There is a tentative trend for H$_2$S and CS abundances relative to H$_2$ to be larger in diffuse clouds ($X$(H$_2$S) and $X$(CS) $\sim 10^{-8} - 10^{-7}$) than in translucent clouds ($X$(H$_2$S) and $X$(CS) $\sim 10^{-9} - 10^{-8}$) toward a small sample; however, a larger sample is required in order to confirm this trend. The derived H$_2$S column densities are higher than the values predicted from the isobaric PDR models, suggesting that chemical desorption of H$_2$S from sulfur-containing ice mantles may play a role in increasing the H$_2$S abundance., Comment: 41 pages, 25 figures, 10 tables, and 5 appendices. The giant molecular cloud Sagittarius B2 (hereafter SgrB2) is the most massive region with ongoing high-mass star formation in the Galaxy. Two ultra-compact HII (UCHII) regions were identified in SgrB2's central hot cores, SgrB2(M) and SgrB2(N). Our aim is to characterize the properties of the HII regions in the entire SgrB2 cloud. Comparing the HII regions and the dust cores, we aim to depict the evolutionary stages of different parts of SgrB2. We use the Very Large Array in its A, CnB, and D configurations, and in the frequency band C (~6 GHz) to observe the whole SgrB2 complex. Using ancillary VLA data at 22.4 GHz and ALMA data at 96 GHz, we calculated the physical parameters of the UCHII regions and their dense gas environment. We identify 54 UCHII regions in the 6 GHz image, 39 of which are also detected at 22.4 GHz. Eight of the 54 UCHII regions are newly discovered. The UCHII regions have radii between $0.006 {\rm pc}$ and $0.04 {\rm pc}$, and have emission measure between $10^{6} {\rm pc\,cm^{-6}}$ and $10^{9} {\rm pc\,cm^{-6}}$. The UCHII regions are ionized by stars of types from B0.5 to O6. We found a typical gas density of $\sim10^6-10^9 {\rm cm^{-3}}$ around the UCHII regions. The pressure of the UCHII regions and the dense gas surrounding them are comparable. The expansion timescale of these UCHII regions is determined to be $\sim10^4-10^5 {\rm yr}$. The percentage of the dust cores that are associated with HII regions are 33%, 73%, 4%, and 1% for SgrB2(N), SgrB2(M), SgrB2(S), and SgrB2(DS), respectively. Two-thirds of the dust cores in SgrB2(DS) are associated with outflows. The electron densities of the UCHII regions we identified are in agreement with that of typical UCHII regions, while the radii are smaller than those of the typical UCHII regions. The dust cores in SgrB2(N) are more evolved than in SgrB2(DS) but younger than in SgrB2(M)., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figure, accepted to A&A

The star-forming activity in the HII region RCW 42 is investigated using multiple wavebands, from near-infrared to radio wavelengths. Located at a distance of 5.8 kpc, this southern region has a bolometric luminosity of 1.8 $\times$ 10$^6$ L$_{\odot}$. The ionized gas emission has been imaged at low radio frequencies of 610 and 1280 MHz using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, India and shows a large expanse of the HII region, spanning $20\times 15$ pc$^2$. The average electron number density in the region is estimated to be $\sim70$ cm$^{-3}$, which suggests an average ionization fraction of the cloud to be $11\%$. An extended green object EGO G274.0649-01.1460 and several young stellar objects have been identified in the region using data from the 2MASS and Spitzer surveys. The dust emission from the associated molecular cloud is probed using Herschel Space Telescope, which reveals the presence of 5 clumps, C1-C5, in this region. Two millimetre emission cores of masses 380 and 390 M$_{\odot}$ towards the radio emission peak have been identified towards C1 from the ALMA map at 1.4 mm. The Structure, Excitation, and Dynamics of the Inner Galactic InterStellar Medium (SEDIGISM) survey has produced high (spatial and spectral) resolution $^{13}$CO (2-1) maps of the Milky Way. It has allowed us to investigate the molecular interstellar medium in the inner Galaxy at an unprecedented level of detail and characterise it into molecular clouds. In a previous paper, we have classified the SEDIGISM clouds into four morphologies. However, how the properties of the clouds vary for these four morphologies is not well understood. Here, we use the morphological classification of SEDIGISM clouds to find connections between the cloud morphologies, their integrated properties, and their location on scaling relation diagrams. We observe that ring-like clouds show the most peculiar properties, having, on average, higher masses, sizes, aspect ratios and velocity dispersions compared to other morphologies. We speculate that this is related to the physical mechanisms that regulate their formation and evolution, for example, turbulence from stellar feedback can often results in the creation of bubble-like structures. We also see a trend of morphology with virial parameter whereby ring-like, elongated, clumpy and concentrated clouds have virial parameters in a decreasing order. We present one of the very first extensive classifications of a large sample of molecular clouds based on their morphology. This is achieved using a recently published catalogue of 10663 clouds obtained from the first data release of the SEDIGISM survey. The clouds are classified into four different morphologies by visual inspection and using an automated algorithm -- J plots. The visual inspection also serves as a test for the J plots algorithm, as this is the first time it has been used on molecular gas. Generally, it has been found that the structure of molecular clouds is highly filamentary and our observations indeed verify that most of our molecular clouds are elongated structures. Based on our visual classification of the 10663 SEDIGISM clouds, 15% are ring-like, 57% are elongated, 15% are concentrated and 10% are clumpy clouds. The remaining clouds do not belong to any of these morphology classes and are termed unclassified. We compare the SEDIGISM molecular clouds with structures identified through other surveys, i.e. ATLASGAL elongated structures and the bubbles from Milky Way Project (MWP). We find that many of the ATLASGAL and MWP structures are velocity coherent. ATLASGAL elongated structures overlap with ~ 21% of the SEDIGISM elongated structures (elongated and clumpy clouds) and MWP bubbles overlap with ~ 25% of the SEDIGISM ring-like clouds. We also analyse the star-formation associated with different cloud morphologies using two different techniques. The first technique examines star formation efficiency (SFE) and the dense gas fraction (DGF), based on SEDIGISM clouds and ATLASGAL clumps data. The second technique uses the high-mass star formation (HMSF) threshold for molecular clouds. We report the discovery of a velocity coherent, kpc-scale molecular structure towards the Galactic center region with an angular extent of 30deg and an aspect ratio of 60:1. The kinematic distance of the CO structure ranges between 4.4 to 6.5 kpc. Analysis of the velocity data and comparison with the existing spiral arm models support that a major portion of this structure is either a sub-branch of the Norma arm or an inter-arm giant molecular filament, likely to be a kpc-scale feather (or spur) of the Milky Way, similar to those observed in nearby spiral galaxies. The filamentary cloud is at least 2.0 kpc in extent, considering the uncertainties in the kinematic distances, and it could be as long as 4 kpc. The vertical distribution of this highly elongated structure reveals a pattern similar to that of a sinusoidal wave. The exact mechanisms responsible for the origin of such a kpc-scale filament and its wavy morphology remains unclear. The distinct wave-like shape and its peculiar orientation makes this cloud, named as the Gangotri wave, one of the largest and most intriguing structures identified in the Milky Way., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

The early B star S1 in the Rho Ophiuchus cloud excites an HII region and illuminates a large egg-shaped photodissociation (PDR) cavity. The PDR is restricted to the west and south-west by the dense molecular Rho Oph A ridge, expanding more freely into the diffuse low density cloud to the north-east. We analyze new SOFIA GREAT, GMRT and APEX data together with archival data from Herschel/PACS, JCMT/HARPS to study the properties of the photo-irradiated ionized and neutral gas in this region. The tracers include [C II] at 158 micron, [O I] at 63 and 145 micron, J=6-5 transitions of CO and 13CO, HCO+ (4-3), radio continuum at 610 and 1420 MHz and HI at 21 cm. The PDR emission is strongly red-shifted to the south-east of the nebula, and primarily blue-shifted on the north western side. The [C II] and and [O I]63 spectra are strongly self-absorbed over most of the PDR. By using the optically thin counterparts, [13C II] and [O I]145 respectively, we conclude that the self-absorption is dominated by the warm (>80 K) foreground PDR gas and not by the surrounding cold molecular cloud. We estimate the column densities of C+ and O of the PDR to be 3e18 and 2e19 cm^-2, respectively. Comparison of stellar far-ultraviolet flux and reprocessed infrared radiation suggest enhanced clumpiness of the gas to the north-west. Analysis of the emission from the PDR gas suggests the presence of at least three density components consisting of high density (10^6 cm^-3) clumps, medium density (10^4 cm^-3) and diffuse (10^3 cm^-3) interclump medium. The medium density component primarily contributes to the thermal pressure of the PDR gas which is in pressure equilibrium with the molecular cloud to the west. The SEDIGISM (Structure, Excitation and Dynamics of the Inner Galactic Interstellar Medium) survey used the APEX telescope to map 84 deg^2 of the Galactic plane between l = -60 deg and l = +31 deg in several molecular transitions, including 13CO(2-1) and C18O(2-1), thus probing the moderately dense (~10^3 cm^-3) component of the interstellar medium. With an angular resolution of 30'' and a typical 1-sigma sensitivity of 0.8-1.0 K at 0.25 km/s velocity resolution, it gives access to a wide range of structures, from individual star-forming clumps to giant molecular clouds and complexes. The coverage includes a good fraction of the first and fourth Galactic quadrants, allowing us to constrain the large scale distribution of cold molecular gas in the inner Galaxy. In this paper we provide an updated overview of the full survey and the data reduction procedures used. We also assess the quality of these data and describe the data products that are being made publicly available as part of this first data release (DR1). We present integrated maps and position-velocity maps of the molecular gas and use these to investigate the correlation between the molecular gas and the large scale structural features of the Milky Way such as the spiral arms, Galactic bar and Galactic centre. We find that approximately 60 per cent of the molecular gas is associated with the spiral arms and these appear as strong intensity peaks in the derived Galactocentric distribution. We also find strong peaks in intensity at specific longitudes that correspond to the Galactic centre and well known star forming complexes, revealing that the 13CO emission is concentrated in a small number of complexes rather than evenly distributed along spiral arms., Comment: MNRAS, in press

We use the 13CO(2-1) emission from the SEDIGISM high-resolution spectral-line survey of the inner Galaxy, to extract the molecular cloud population with a large dynamic range in spatial scales, using the SCIMES algorithm. This work compiles a cloud catalogue with a total of 10663 molecular clouds, 10300 of which we were able to assign distances and compute physical properties. We study some of the global properties of clouds using a science sample, consisting of 6664 well resolved sources and for which the distance estimates are reliable. In particular, we compare the scaling relations retrieved from SEDIGISM to those of other surveys, and we explore the properties of clouds with and without high-mass star formation. Our results suggest that there is no single global property of a cloud that determines its ability to form massive stars, although we find combined trends of increasing mass, size, surface density and velocity dispersion for the sub-sample of clouds with ongoing high-mass star formation. We then isolate the most extreme clouds in the SEDIGISM sample (i.e. clouds in the tails of the distributions) to look at their overall Galactic distribution, in search for hints of environmental effects. We find that, for most properties, the Galactic distribution of the most extreme clouds is only marginally different to that of the global cloud population. The Galactic distribution of the largest clouds, the turbulent clouds and the high-mass star-forming clouds are those that deviate most significantly from the global cloud population. We also find that the least dynamically active clouds (with low velocity dispersion or low virial parameter) are situated further afield, mostly in the least populated areas. (Abridged) ASHES has been designed to systematically characterize the earliest stages and to constrain theories of high-mass star formation. A total of 12 massive (>500 $M_{\odot}$), cold (<15 K), 3.6-70 $\mu$m dark prestellar clump candidates, embedded in IRDCs, were carefully selected in the pilot survey to be observed with ALMA. We mosaiced each clump (~1 arcmin^2) in dust and line emission with the 12m/7m/TP arrays at 224 GHz, resulting in ~1.2" resolution (~4800 AU). As the first paper of the series, we concentrate on the dust emission to reveal the clump fragmentation. We detect 294 cores, from which 84 (29%) are categorized as protostellar based on outflow activity or 'warm core' line emission. The remaining 210 (71%) are considered prestellar core candidates. The number of detected cores is independent of the mass sensitivity range of the observations. On average, more massive clumps tend to form more cores. We find a large population of low-mass (<1 M) cores and no high-mass (>30 $M_{\odot}$) prestellar cores. The most massive prestellar core has a mass of 11 $M_{\odot}$. From the prestellar CMF, we derive a power law index of 1.17+-0.1, slightly shallower than Salpeter (1.35). We use the MST technique to characterize the separation between cores and their spatial distribution, and derive mass segregation ratios. While there is a range of core masses and separations detected in the sample, the mean separation and mass of cores are well explained by thermal fragmentation and are inconsistent with turbulent Jeans fragmentation. The core spatial distribution is well described by hierarchical subclustering rather than centrally peaked clustering. There is no conclusive evidence of mass segregation. The giant molecular cloud Sagittarius B2 (hereafter SgrB2) is the most massive region with ongoing high-mass star formation in the Galaxy. In the southern region of the 40-pc large envelope of SgrB2, we encounter the SgrB2(DS) region which hosts more than 60 high-mass protostellar cores distributed in an arc shape around an extended HII region. We use the Very Large Array in its CnB and D configurations, and in the frequency bands C (4--8 GHz) and X (8--12 GHz) to observe the whole SgrB2 complex. Continuum and radio recombination line maps are obtained. We detect radio continuum emission in SgrB2(DS) in a bubble-shaped structure. From 4 to 12 GHz, we derive a spectral index between -1.2 and -0.4, indicating the presence of non-thermal emission. We decompose the contribution from thermal and non-thermal emission, and find that the thermal component is clumpy and more concentrated, while the non-thermal component is more extended and diffuse. The radio recombination lines in the region are found to be not in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) but stimulated by the non-thermal emission. The thermal free-free emission is likely tracing an HII region ionized by an O7 star, while the non-thermal emission can be generated by relativistic electrons created through first-order Fermi acceleration. We present the HI 21 cm spectral line and continuum observations of the Galactic supernova remnant candidate G351.7-1.2 using the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. Strong absorption features are observed towards the HII regions in the star forming complex associated with G351.7-1.2. Along with HI emission towards the outer periphery of the supernova remnant shell, we distinguish a high velocity jet-like feature in the velocity range +40 km/s to +52 km/s in HI. This unusual and highly collimated feature, with a projected length of ~7 pc and an opening angle of 14.4 deg, is located towards the interior of the radio shell. This is the first report of a such a well collimated HI jet-like emission. The peculiar location and the detection of a gamma-ray source towards the central peak of this HI jet suggests its plausible association with the supernova remnant candidate., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS Letters, 5 pages, 6 figures

We present low frequency wide band observations (300-500 MHz) of the star forming complex G351.7-1.2 using upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT), India. Combining this with the optical, infrared and submillimeter data, we analyse the large scale diffuse radio emission associated with the region that exhibits a broken shell morphology. The spectral index of the emission in the shell is -0.8, indicating non-thermal emission. H-alpha emission that mimics the morphology of the radio shell on a smaller scale is also detected here. Based on the non-thermal emission from the radio shell and the presence of its optical counterpart, we classify G351.7-1.2 as a candidate SNR. A gamma-ray source detected by Fermi LAT (1FGLJ1729.1-3641c) is located towards the south-west of the radio shell and could have a possible origin in the interaction between high velocity particles from the SNR and the ambient molecular cloud., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Low radio frequencies are favourable for the identification of emission from non-thermal processes such as synchrotron emission. The massive protostellar jet associated with IRAS 18162-2048 (also known as the HH80-81 system) has been imaged at low radio frequencies: 325, 610 and 1300 MHz, using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, India. This is the first instance of detection of non-thermal emission from a massive protostellar jet at such low radio frequencies. The central region displays an elongated structure characteristic of the jet. In addition, the associated Herbig-Haro objects such as HH80, HH81, HH80N, and other condensations along the inner regions of the jet exhibit negative spectral indices. The spectral indices of most condensations are ~-0.7, higher than the value of -0.3 determined earlier using high frequency measurements. The magnetic field values derived using radio flux densities in the present work, under the assumption of equipartition near minimum energy condition, lie in the range 116-180 microgauss. We probe into the hard X-ray nature of a source that has been attributed to HH80, in an attempt to reconcile the non-thermal characteristics of radio and X-ray measurements. The flux densities of condensations at 610 MHz, measured nearly 11 yrs apart, display variability that could be ascribed to the cooling of condensations, and emphasize the importance of coeval or nearly-coeval measurements for estimation of spectral indices., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a multiwavelength study of the filamentary infrared dark cloud (IRDC) G333.73+0.37. The region contains two distinct mid-infrared sources S1 and S2 connected by dark lanes of gas and dust. Cold dust emission from the IRDC is detected at seven wavelength bands and we have identified 10 high density clumps in the region. The physical properties of the clumps such as temperature: 14.3-22.3 K and mass: 87-1530 M_sun are determined by fitting a modified blackbody to the spectral energy distribution of each clump between 160 micron and 1.2 mm. The total mass of the IRDC is estimated to be $~4700 M_sun. The molecular line emission towards S1 reveals signatures of protostellar activity. Low frequency radio emission at 1300 and 610 MHz is detected towards S1 (shell-like) and S2 (compact morphology), confirming the presence of newly formed massive stars in the IRDC. Photometric analysis of near and mid-infrared point sources unveil the young stellar object population associated with the cloud. Fragmentation analysis indicates that the filament is supercritical. We observe a velocity gradient along the filament, that is likely to be associated with accretion flows within the filament rather than rotation. We probe the structure and kinematics of two neighbouring H II regions identified as cometary and bipolar, using radio recombination lines (RRL). The H172{\alpha} RRLs from these H II regions: G351.6-1.15 and G351.6-1.25, are mapped using GMRT, India. We also detect carbon RRLs C172{\alpha} towards both these regions. The hydrogen RRLs display the effects of pressure and dynamical broadening in the line profiles, with the dynamical broadening (15 km/s) playing a major role in the observed profile of G351.6-1.15. We investigate the kinematics of molecular gas species towards this H II region from the MALT90 pilot survey. The molecular gas is mostly distributed towards the north and north-west of the cometary head. The molecular line profiles indicate signatures of turbulence and outflow in this region. The ionized gas at the cometary tail is blue shifted by 8 km/s with respect to the ambient molecular cloud, consistent with the earlier proposed champagne flow scenario. The relative velocity of 5 km/s between the northern and southern lobes of the bipolar H II region G351.6-1.25 is consistent with the premise that the bipolar morphology is a result of the expanding ionized lobes within a flat molecular cloud., Comment: 22 pages, 19 figures, 5 tables, accepted for puplication in MNRAS

We present a multiwavelength investigation of star formation activity towards the southern H II regions associated with IRAS 17160-3707, located at a distance of 6.2 kpc with a bolometric luminosity of 830000 Lsun.The ionised gas distribution and dust clumps in the parental molecular cloud are examined in detail using measurements at infrared, submillimeter and radio wavelengths.The radio continuum images at 1280 and 610 MHz obtained using Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope reveal the presence of multiple compact sources as well as nebulous emission.At submillimeter wavelengths, we identify seven dust clumps and estimate their physical properties like temperature: 24 - 30 K, mass: 300 - 4800 Msun and luminosity: 900 - 31700 Lsun using modified blackbody fits to the spectral energy distributions between 70 and 870 um.We find 24 young stellar objects in the mid-infrared, with few of them coincident with the compact radio sources.The spectral energy distributions of young stellar objects have been fitted by the Robitaille models and the results indicate that those having radio compact sources as counterparts host massive objects in early evolutionary stages with best fit age <= 0.2 Myr.We compare the relative evolutionary stages of clumps using various signposts such as masers, ionised gas, presence of young stellar objects and infrared nebulosity and find six massive star forming clumps and one quiescent clump.Of the former, five are in a relatively advanced stage and one in an earlier stage., Comment: 54 pages, 23 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

IRAS 17256-3631 is a southern Galactic massive star forming region located at a distance of 2 kpc. In this paper, we present a multiwavelength investigation of the embedded cluster, the HII region, as well as the parent cloud. Radio images at 325, 610 and 1372 MHz were obtained using GMRT, India while the near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy were carried out using UKIRT and Mt. Abu Infrared Telescope, India. The near-infrared K-band image reveals the presence of a partially embedded infrared cluster. The spectral features of the brightest star in the cluster, IRS-1, spectroscopically agrees with a late O or early B star and could be the driving source of this region. Filamentary H_2 emission detected towards the outer envelope indicates presence of highly excited gas. The parent cloud is investigated at far-infrared to millimeter wavelengths and eighteen dust clumps have been identified. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these clumps have been fitted as modified blackbodies and the best-fit peak temperatures are found to range from 14-33 K, while the column densities vary from 0.7-8.5x10^22 cm^-2. The radio maps show a cometary morphology for the distribution of ionized gas that is density bounded towards the north-west and ionization bounded towards the south-east. This morphology is better explained with the champagne flow model as compared to the bow shock model.
