This study investigates the influence of different sinter-HIP temperatures and binder saturation levels on the microstructure and properties of WC–12Co cemented carbide, produced using binder jetting. The sinter-HIP process was performed at 1400 °C, 1460 °C, and 1500 °C and binder saturation levels of 60% and 75% were selected during printing. The binder saturation proved to affect the repeatability of the manufacturing process and the sturdiness of the green models. The increase of the sintering temperature from 1400 °C to 1460 °C is correlated with an increase in the density. Nonetheless, a further raise in temperature to 1500 °C leads to significant grain coarsening without clear advantages in terms of porosity reduction. Both the transverse rupture strength and Vickers hardness increase when the sinter-HIP temperature rises from 1400 °C to 1460 °C, where the typical results for traditionally manufactured WC–12Co are met, with a comparable grain size. The transverse rupture strength and Vickers hardness then decrease for samples treated at 1500 °C. Finally, potential issues in the manufacturing process are identified and correlated with the defects in the final components.

Twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steels are considered excellent materials for manufacturing products requiring extremely high mechanical properties for various applications including thin medical devices, such as biodegradable intravascular stents. It is also proven that the addition of Ag can guarantee an appropriate degradation while implanted in human body without affecting its bioactive properties. In order to develop an optimized manufacturing process for thin stents, the effect of Ag on the recrystallization behavior of TWIP steels needs to be elucidated. This is of major importance since manufacturing stents involves several intermediate recrystallization annealing treatments. In this work, the recrystallization mechanism of two Fe-Mn-C steels with and without Ag was thoroughly investigated by microstructural and mechanical analyses. It was observed that Ag promoted a finer microstructure with a different texture evolution, while the recrystallization kinetics resulted unaffected. The presence of Ag also reduced the effectiveness of the recrystallization treatment. This behavior was attributed to the presence of Ag-rich second phase particles, precipitation of carbides and to the preferential development of grains possessing a {111} orientation upon thermal treatment. The prominence of {111} grains can also give rise to premature twinning, explaining the role of Ag in reducing the ductility of TWIP steels already observed in other works. Furthermore, in vitro biological performances were unaffected by Ag. These findings could allow the design of efficient treatments for supporting the transformation of Fe-Mn-C steels alloyed with Ag into commercial products.

Actual polymeric wound closure devices are not optimal for load-bearing applications due to the low mechanical properties and the risk of inflammation and bacterial infection mainly produced by multifilament and braided configurations. Biodegradable metallic Zn alloys are promising materials candidates; however, mechanical performance, corrosion behaviour, and biological response should be controlled in order to inhibit the risk of inflammation and bacterial infection. To this end, a Zn-2Ag (2 wt% Ag) alloy was processed by ECAP to evaluate the concurrent combined effect of grain refinement and Ag alloying on biodegradation and antibacterial activity. Two ECAP cycles were successfully applied to a Zn-2Ag alloy obtaining a homogeneous ultra-fine-grained structure in which nanoindentation maps suggested isotropic mechanical properties. Lower UTS and YS with higher elongation was reported after ECAP with similar corrosion rates as before processing. ECAP processed samples showed a homogeneous Ag+ release below the minimum inhibitory concentration for S. Aureus and no antibacterial effect was observed by diffusion. As expected, the presence of Ag in Zn-Ag alloys reduced bacterial attachment. Nevertheless, ECAP processed Zn-2Ag provided an excellent antibacterial activity after 3 h probably caused by the uniformly degraded and thus, non– stable, surface observed after bacterial adhesion.

This work is focussed at investigating the properties of additive manufactured Ti-6242S, a Ti alloy with excellent mechanical strength and stability up to 550 °C. Special attention is given to the effect of different heat treatment routes on microstructure and high-temperature mechanical behaviour of the Ti-6242S alloy produced by Laser Powder Bed Fusion. Annealing was performed in the α/β field (at 940 °C, 960 °C, 980 °C) or above the β transus (at 1050 °C). Annealing step was followed by Ar gas cooling and ageing at 595 °C. The as-built material exhibits high strength and anisotropic behaviour, showing lower fracture elongation in the direction parallel to the build platform. Heat treatments are responsible for a reduction of material strength but an increase in fracture elongation. Tensile tests at high temperature show that the best heat treatment for applications up to 300 °C is the annealing at 940 °C followed by Ar cooling and ageing. For applications at higher temperatures (namely 550 °C, 750 °C) the annealing step should be performed above the β transus temperature, at 1050 °C, to achieve the best tensile properties.

The demand for high-performance aluminum components drives research into the design of novel alloys that can be processed by laser-based additive manufacturing. In recent years, the addition of grain refiners proved to be an effective strategy to reduce the hot-cracking of high-strength Al alloys. In this study, the solidification and aging behavior of an Al2139 alloy doped with additions of Zr and Ti for L-PBF was investigated. These elements favored the formation of a fine-grained structure free of cracks. The formation of Al3(Zr,Ti) inoculants was predicted by Scheil simulations and observed as cuboidal particles in the center of α-Al grains. The microstructure of the as-built material featured fine and fully equiaxed grains, which appeared comparatively finer at the edge (300–600 nm) and coarser (0.8–2.0 μm) at the center of the molten pools. In both cases, there was evidence of Cu and Mg micro-segregations at the grain boundaries. The microhardness of 109.7 HV0.5 in the as-built state was increased to 186.1 HV0.5 after optimized T4 heat treatment, responsible for the precipitation of many rod-shaped Zr- and Ti-based second phases and quasi-spherical Cu-, Mn-, and Fe-rich particles. Prolonged exposure carried out to simulate high-temperature service caused a drop in microhardness and marked modification of the microstructure, evidenced by the rearrangement and subsequent spheroidization of Cu- and Mg-rich particles at the grain boundaries.

Gambling disorder (GD) is a behavioral addiction that severely impacts individuals’ functioning, leading to high socioeconomic costs. Non-invasive brain stimulation (NiBS) has received attention for treating psychiatric and neurological conditions in recent decades, but there is no recommendation for its use for GD. Therefore, this study aimed to systematically review and analyze the available literature to determine the effectiveness of NiBS in treating GD. Following the PRISMA guidelines, we screened four electronic databases up to July 2022 and selected relevant English-written original articles. We included ten papers in the systematic review and seven in the meta-analysis. As only two studies employed a sham-controlled design, the pre–post standardized mean change (SMCC) was computed as effect size only for real stimulation. The results showed a significant effect of NiBS in reducing craving scores (SMCC = −0.69; 95% CI = [−1.2, −0.2], p = 0.010). Moreover, considering the GD’s frequent comorbidity with mood disorders, we ran an exploratory analysis of the effects of NiBS on depressive symptoms, which showed significant decreases in post-treatment scores (SMCC = −0.71; 95% CI = [−1.1, −0.3], p < 0.001). These results provide initial evidence for developing NiBS as a feasible therapy for GD symptoms but further comprehensive research is needed to validate these findings. The limitations of the available literature are critically discussed.

Owing to the hexagonal close-packed (HCP) crystal structure of magnesium alloys, they are characterized by poor plasticity at low temperatures (below recrystallization temperature), which limits their application. Texture control has been proven to be an effective way to enhance the ductility, formability, processability, and so on. Various technologies, which can be classified as alloying elements, induced shear deformation, pre-twins, and recrystallization, have been developed to modify the basal texture. Based on these results, the general mechanisms of texture control in various recent methods are summarized. In addition, applications of Mg products via texture weakening below recrystallization temperatures are also reviewed. Finally, the current problems and the potential research directions on texture control are suggested.

In the current investigation, a comparison between two type 4130 low-alloy steel powders produced by both gas and water atomization, and later processed by Laser-powder bed fusion was carried out. Samples fabricated from the water atomized powder showed relative density levels exceeding 99%, slightly lower than those achieved with the gas atomized powder. Both steels exhibited similar metallurgical features after solidification, showing a microstructure that is mainly composed of partially tempered martensite, bainite, and retained austenite. Additionally, micro-segregation of alloying elements was detected in the as-built microstructure, which contribute to a local increase in microhardness. The excess of oxygen found in the water atomized powder tended to combine with silicon and form nano-sized SiO2 inclusions. During the laser processing, the complex heating and cooling effects generated by adjacent laser tracks and by overlapping layers led to an in-situ tempering of the fresh martensite. Accordingly, the hardness values of steels in as-built condition were equivalent to those of conventionally quenched samples tempered at 350 °C and 450 °C, for gas atomized and water atomized steels, respectively. Finally, a comparison in terms of mechanical properties of the investigated steels showed that the powder atomization process resulted in limited changes in steel performance.

Background: Aneurysm shrinkage has been proposed as a marker of successful endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). We evaluated the impact of sac shrinkage on secondary interventions, on survival and its association with endoleaks, and on compliance with instructions for use (IFU). Methods: This observational retrospective study was conducted on all consecutive patients receiving EVAR for an infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) using exclusively Endurant II/IIs endograft from 2014 to 2018. Sixty patients were entered in the study. Aneurysm sac shrinkage was defined as decrease ≥5 mm of the maximum aortic diameter. Univariate methods and Kaplan–Meier plots assessed the potential impact of shrinkage. Results: Twenty-six patients (43.3%) experienced shrinkage at one year, and thirty-four (56.7%) had no shrinkage. Shrinkage was not significantly associated with any demographics or morbidity, except hypertension (p = 0.01). No aneurysm characteristics were associated with shrinkage. Non-compliance with instructions for use (IFU) in 13 patients (21.6%) was not associated with shrinkage. Three years after EVAR, freedom from secondary intervention was 85 ± 2% for the entire series, 92.3 ± 5.0% for the shrinkage group and 83.3 ± 9% for the no-shrinkage group (Logrank: p = 0.49). Survival at 3 years was not significantly different between the two groups (85.9 ± 7.0% vs. 79.0 ± 9.0%, Logrank; p = 0.59). Strict compliance with IFU was associated with less reinterventions at 3 years (92.1 ± 5.9% vs. 73.8 ± 15%, Logrank: p = 0.03). Similarly, survival at 3 years did not significantly differ between strict compliance with IFU and non-compliance (81.8 ± 7.0% vs. 78.6 ± 13.0%, Logrank; p = 0.32). Conclusion: This study suggests that shrinkage ≥5 mm at 1-year is not significantly associated with a better survival rate or a lower risk of secondary intervention than no-shrinkage. In this series, the risk of secondary intervention regardless of shrinkage seems to be linked more to non-compliance with IFU. Considering the small number of patients, these results must be confirmed by extensive prospective studies.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of a 4130-grade steel processed by L-PBF using a feedstock of low-cost water atomized powder have been investigated considering the effects of powder recycling. Chemical analysis of the recycled powder showed a constant amount of alloying elements with a slight reduction in oxygen content. The as-built microstructure was mainly composed of a martensitic structure separated by a high fraction of low-angle grain boundaries, suggesting the application of a direct tempering treatment starting from the as-built condition as a cost-effective post-process thermal treatment rather than the conventional quench and tempering treatment. Moreover, the degree of anisotropy generated by L-PBF in as-built specimens could be reduced after performing either the direct tempering or the quench and tempering treatments. The possible degradation of powder properties on the steel performance was also investigated. After various powder recycling events, no significant deterioration in tensile properties was measured, indicating that the water atomized powder could be a sustainable feedstock candidate for L-PBF.

Continuous developments in additive manufacturing (AM) technology are opening up opportunities in novel machining, and improving design alternatives for modern particle accelerator components. One of the most critical, complex, and delicate accelerator elements to manufacture and assemble is the radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) linear accelerator, which is used as an injector for all large modern proton and ion accelerator systems. For this reason, the RFQ has been selected by a wide European collaboration participating in the AM developments of the I.FAST (Innovation Fostering in Accelerator Science and Technology) Horizon 2020 project. The RFQ is as an excellent candidate to show how sophisticated pure copper accelerator components can be manufactured by AM and how their functionalities can be boosted by this evolving technology. To show the feasibility of the AM process, a prototype RFQ section has been designed, corresponding to one-quarter of a 750 MHz 4-vane RFQ, which was optimised for production with state-of-the-art laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) technology, and then manufactured in pure copper. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first RFQ section manufactured in the world by AM. Subsequently, geometrical precision and surface roughness of the prototype were measured. The results obtained are encouraging and confirm the feasibility of AM manufactured high-tech accelerator components. It has been also confirmed that the RFQ geometry, particularly the critical electrode modulation and the complex cooling channels, can be successfully realised thanks to the opportunities provided by the AM technology. Further prototypes will aim to improve surface roughness and to test vacuum properties. In parallel, laboratory measurements will start to test and improve the voltage holding properties of AM manufactured electrode samples.

Fatigue is the most common cause of failure of mechanical parts in engineering applications. In the current work, we investigate the fatigue life of a bulk metallic (BMG) glass fabricated via additive manufacturing. Specimens fabricated via laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF) are shown to have a fatigue ratio of 0.20 (fatigue limit of 175 MPa) in a three-point bending fatigue test. Three strategies for improving the fatigue behavior were tested, namely (1) relaxation heat treatment, giving a slight fatigue life improvement at high loading conditions (≥250 MPa), (2) laser shock peening, and (3) changing the build orientation, the latter two of which yielded no significant effects. It was found that the presence of lack of fusion (LoF) had the preponderant effect on fatigue resistance of the specimens manufactured. LoF was observed to be a source of stress localization and initiation of cracks. The fatigue life in BMGs fabricated by LPBF is thus primarily influenced by powder quality and process-induced defects, which cannot be removed by the post-treatments carried out in this study. It is believed that a slight increase in laser power, either in the near-surface regions or in the core of the specimens, could improve the fatigue behavior despite the associated (detrimental) increase of crystallized fraction.

The number of available materials for Laser Powder Bed Fusion is still limited due to the poor processability of many standard alloys. In particular, the lack of high-strength aluminium alloys, widely used in aerospace and automotive industries, remains a big issue for the spread of beam-based additive manufacturing technologies. In this study, a novel high-strength aluminium alloy for high temperature applications having good processability was developed. The design of the alloy was done based on the chemical composition of the widely used EN AW 2618. This Al-Cu-Mg-Ni-Fe alloy was modified with Ti and B in order to promote the formation of TiB2 nuclei in the liquid phase able to stimulate heterogeneous nucleation of grains and to decrease the hot cracking susceptibility of the material. The new Al alloy was manufactured by gas atomisation and processed by Laser Powder Bed Fusion. Samples produced with optimised parameters featured relative density of 99.91%, with no solidification cracks within their microstructure. After aging, the material revealed upper yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of 495 MPa and 460 MPa, respectively. In addition, the alloy showed tensile strength higher than wrought EN AW 2618 at elevated temperatures.

In this research, steel alloys based on the Fe-Cr-Mo, Fe-Cr-Mn and Fe-Cr-Mo-Mn-Ni systems have been designed, produced by different atomisation techniques, and processed by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) to investigate their microstructural and mechanical behaviour. Both gas atomisation and water atomisation were considered for powder preparation. The resulting different flowability of powders, hence a different densification behaviour during processing, could be compensated by tuning the L-PBF parameters and by the application of a post treatment to improve flowability of the water atomised powders. In agreement with thermodynamic calculations, small-size oxide-based nonmetallic inclusions of the type SiO2, MnO-SiO2, Cr2O3-SiO2 were found within the steel matrix and on the fracture surfaces of the water atomised L-PBF alloys, featuring higher amounts of oxygen than the gas-atomised steels. Analyses on microstructure and hardness of the hardenable as-built steels suggested that during laser processing, the multilayer L-PBF structure undergoes an in-situ tempering treatment. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the L-PBF steels could be widely tuned depending on the post-thermal treatment conditions.

In recent years, increasing interest has been placed in the development of Zn alloys for absorbable biomedical applications. It has been demonstrated that these alloys are potential candidates for endovascular applications. In the present work, a novel Zn-12.5Ag-1Mg alloy was investigated as a potential biomedical absorbable material. As a reference, the exhibited biocompatible properties are compared with those of pure Zn and a Zn-1Mg alloy. All the alloys investigated in this work were cast in a water-cooled Cu-mold (chill casting). Subsequently, the alloys were solution-treated and then extruded. The microstructural evolution at each stage of the alloy processing was resolved by analytical means including optical, scanning, transmission microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. By these means, the various phases belonging to this alloy system were disclosed. In addition, determinations of both corrosion and mechanical properties were carried out in the proposed Zn-12.5Ag-1Mg alloy. In particular, an excellent combination of strength and ductility was found, which is attributed to grain refinement as well as the precipitation of a uniform distribution of refined phases (i.e., AgZn solid solution, ε-AgZn3, and Ag0.15MgZn1.85 intermetallics). All the precipitated intermetallics were embedded in a η-Zn matrix. As for the corrosion degradation in the physiological NaCl solution in the as-extruded condition, the experimental outcome indicates that the Zn-12.5Ag-1Mg alloy exhibits degradation rates far superior to currently reported ones for Zn-based alloys intended for absorbable biomedical applications.

Biodegradable stents are attracting the attention of many researchers in biomedical and materials research fields since they can absolve their specific function for the expected period of time and then gradually disappear. This feature allows avoiding the risk of long-term complications such as restenosis or mechanical instability of the device when the vessel grows in size in pediatric patients. Up to now biodegradable stents made of polymers or magnesium alloys have been proposed. However, both the solutions have limitations. The polymers have low mechanical properties, which lead to devices that cannot withstand the natural contraction of the blood vessel: the restenosis appears just after the implant, and can be ascribed to the compliance of the stent. The magnesium alloys have much higher mechanical properties, but they dissolve too fast in the human body. In this work we present some results of an ongoing study aiming to the development of biodegradable stents made of a magnesium alloy that is coated with a polymer having a high corrosion resistance. The mechanical action on the blood vessel is given by the magnesium stent for the desired period, being the stent protected against fast corrosion by the coating. The coating will dissolve in a longer term, thus delaying the exposition of the magnesium stent to the corrosive environment. We dealt with the problem exploiting the potentialities of a combined approach of experimental and computational methods (both standard and ad-hoc developed) for designing magnesium alloy, coating and scaffold geometry from different points of views. Our study required the following steps: i) selection of a Mg alloy suitable for stent production, having sufficient strength and elongation capability; ii) computational optimization of the stent geometry to minimize stress and strain after stent deployment, improve scaffolding ability and corrosion resistance; iii) development of a numerical model for studying stent degradation to support the selection of the best geometry; iv) optimization of the alloy microstructure and production of Mg alloy tubes for stent manufacturing; v) set up, in terms of laser cut and surface finishing, of the procedure to manufacture magnesium stents; vi) selection of a coating able to assure enough corrosion resistance and computational evaluation of the coating adhesion. In the paper the multi-disciplinary approach used to go through the steps above is summarized. The obtained results suggest that developed methodology is effective at designing innovative biomedical devices.

Metal matrix composites reinforced by nano-particles are very promising materials, suitable for a large number of applications. These composites consist of a metal matrix filled with nano-particles featuring physical and mechanical properties very different from those of the matrix. The nano-particles can improve the base material in terms of wear resistance, damping properties and mechanical strength. Different kinds of metals, predominantly Al, Mg and Cu, have been employed for the production of composites reinforced by nano-ceramic particles such as carbides, nitrides, oxides as well as carbon nanotubes. The main issue of concern for the synthesis of these materials consists in the low wettability of the reinforcement phase by the molten metal, which does not allow the synthesis by conventional casting methods. Several alternative routes have been presented in literature for the production of nano-composites. This work is aimed at reviewing the most important manufacturing techniques used for the synthesis of bulk metal matrix nanocomposites. Moreover, the strengthening mechanisms responsible for the improvement of mechanical properties of nano-reinforced metal matrix composites have been reviewed and the main potential applications of this new class of materials are envisaged.

The fatigue behaviour of an AlSi10Mg alloy processed by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) and subjected to different surface finishing processes was investigated paying special attention to the residual defects on the surface and the dominant fatigue failure mechanisms. Roughness measurements and qualitative surface morphology analysis showed smooth surfaces in the case of vibro-finishing and machining followed by polishing. The fatigue performance did not reveal to be directly related to surface roughness, but residual intrusions left on the finished surfaces. Post-mortem analysis showed single- or multiple-crack nucleation from pores opened on the surface, un-melted powders, or spatters considered as typical L-PBF defects. A fatigue limit of 195 MPa for machined and polished samples was obtained by substantial removal of surface and subsurface defects.

A study was performed to investigate the hydrogen embrittlement behavior of 18-Ni 300 maraging steel produced by selective laser melting and subjected to different heat treatment strategies. Hydrogen was pre-charged into the tensile samples by an electro-chemical method at the constant current density of 1 A m−2 and 50 A m−2 for 48 h at room temperature. Charged and uncharged specimens were subjected to tensile tests and the hydrogen concentration was eventually analysed using quadrupole mass spectroscopy. After tensile tests, uncharged maraging samples showed fracture surfaces with dimples. Conversely, in H-charged alloys, quasi-cleavage mode fractures occurred. A lower concentration of trapped hydrogen atoms and higher elongation at fracture were measured in the H-charged samples that were subjected to solution treatment prior to hydrogen charging, compared to the as-built counterparts. Isothermal aging treatment performed at 460 °C for 8 h before hydrogen charging increased the concentration of trapped hydrogen, giving rise to higher hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility.

Absorbable metals have potential for making in-demand rigid temporary stents for the treatment of urinary tract obstruction, where polymers have reached their limits. In this work, in vitro degradation behavior of absorbable zinc alloys in artificial urine was studied using electrochemical methods and advanced surface characterization techniques with a comparison to a magnesium alloy. The results showed that pure zinc and its alloys (Zn–0.5Mg, Zn–1Mg, Zn–0.5Al) exhibited slower corrosion than pure magnesium and an Mg–2Zn–1Mn alloy. The corrosion layer was composed mostly of hydroxide, carbonate, and phosphate, without calcium content for the zinc group. Among all tested metals, the Zn–0.5Al alloy exhibited a uniform corrosion layer with low affinity with the ions in artificial urine.

The AlSi10Mg alloy was processed by selective laser melting using both hot- and cold-build platforms. The investigation was aimed at defining suitable platform pre-heating and post-process thermal treatment strategies, taking into consideration the peculiar microstructures generated. Microstructural analyses, differential scanning calorimetry, and high-resolution diffraction from synchrotron radiation, showed that in the cold platform as-built condition, the amount of supersaturated Si was higher than in hot platform samples. The best hardness and tensile performance were achieved upon direct aging from cold platform-printed alloys. The hot platform strategy led to a loss in the aging response, since the long processing times spent at high temperature induced a substantial overaging effect, already in the as-built samples. Finally, the standard T6 temper consisting of post-process solution annealing followed by artificial aging, resulted in higher ductility but lower mechanical strength.

In the current era of high-throughput drug discovery and development, molecular modeling has become an indispensable tool for identifying, optimizing and prioritizing small-molecule drug candidates. The required background in computational chemistry and the knowledge of how to handle the complex underlying protocols, however, might keep medicinal chemists from routinely using in silico technologies. Our objective is to encourage those researchers to exploit existing modeling technologies more frequently through easy-to-use graphical user interfaces. In this account, we present two innovative tools (which we are prepared to share with academic institutions) facilitating computational tasks commonly utilized in drug discovery and development: (1) the VirtualDesignLab estimates the binding affinity of small molecules by simulating and quantifying their binding to the three-dimensional structure of a target protein; and (2) the MD Client launches molecular dynamics simulations aimed at exploring the time-dependent stability of ligand–protein complexes and provides residue-based interaction energies. This allows medicinal chemists to identify sites of potential improvement in their candidate molecule. As a case study, we present the application of our tools towards the design of novel antagonists for the FimH adhesin.

Shape memory alloy (SMA) wires are employed as actuators in small devices for consumer electronics, valves and automotive applications. Because of the continued miniaturization of all the industrial products, nowadays the tendency is to produce MEMS (micro electromechanical systems). Among the most promising functional MEMS materials, the thin SMA wires that are offering a rapid actuating response with high power/weigh ratio of the material, are attracting a world wide interest. This paper is aimed at showing the production process and the characterizations of thin NiTi shape memory wires. The activity was focused on drawing procedure and on functional and TEM characterizations of the final products. In particular, it was evaluated the performance of the SMA wires for actuators in terms of functional fatigue and thermo-mechanical properties by means of an experimental apparatus design ad hoc for these specific tests.
