Although estimating travel distance is essential to our ability to move through the world, our distance estimates can be inaccurate. These odometric errors occur because people tend to perceive that they have moved further than they had. Many of the studies investigating the perception of travel distance have primarily used forward translational movements, and postulate that perceived travel distance results from integration over distance and is independent of travel speed. Speed effects would imply integration over time as well as space. To examine travel distance perception with different directions and speeds, we used virtual reality (VR) to elicit visually induced self-motion. Participants (n = 15) were physically stationary while being visually "moved" through a virtual corridor, either judging distances by stopping at a previously seen target (Move-To-Target Task) or adjusting a target to the previous movement made (Adjust-Target Task). We measured participants' perceived travel distance over a range of speeds (1–5 m/s) and distances in four directions (up, down, forward, backward). We show that the simulated speed and direction of motion differentially affect the gain (perceived travel distance / actual travel distance). For the Adjust-Target task, forwards motion was associated with smaller gains than either backward, up, or down motion. For the Move-To-Target task, backward motion was associated with smaller gains than either forward, up or down motion. For both tasks, motion at the slower speed was associated with higher gains than the faster speeds. These results show that transforming visual motion into travel distance differs depending on the speed and direction of optic flow being perceived. We also found that a common model used to study the perception of travel distance was a better fit for the forward direction compared to the others. • Vertical vergence was triggered by optic flow and visual rotations in all planes. • The degree of vergence was correlated with increased instability and stress. • Visually induced vertical vergence likely reflects subcortical vestibular activity. The present study explored visually induced vertical vergence (VIVV) as non-specific motion processing response. Healthy participants (7 male, mean age 28.57 ± 2.30; 9 female, mean age 27.67 ± 3.65) were exposed to optokinetic stimuli in an HTC VIVE virtual reality headset while VIVV, pupil-size, and postural sway was recorded. The methodology was shown to produce VIVV in the roll plane at 30 deg/s. Subsequent trials consisted of 40 s optokinetic motion in yaw, pitch, and roll directions at 60 deg/s, and radial optic flow; optokinetic directions were inverted after 20 s of motion. Median VIVV amplitude changes were normalized to the clockwise roll rotation, analysed, and correlated with changes in pupil-size and body sway. VIVV, pupil-size, and body sway were all affected by changes in optokinetic direction. Post-hoc analyses showed significant VIVV responses during optokinetic yaw and pitch rotations, as well as during radial optic flow stimulations. VIVV magnitudes were universally correlated with pupil-size and body sway. In conclusion, VIVV was expressed in all tested dimensions and may consequently serve as a visual motion processing biomarker. Failing to support binocularity while responding to optokinetic directionality, VIVV may reflect an eye-movement response associated with increased postural instability and stress, similar to a dorsal light reflex. Introduction Vection is a stationary individual's illusory experience of self-motion. This illusory self-motion is operationally important for aviation, particularly military aviation, since vection is a dramatic example of spatial disorientation (SD), which is an individual's failure to correctly sense the aircraft's position, motion, and/or attitude with respect to the fixed coordinate system of the Earth's surface and its gravitational vertical. Notably, SD is a major cause of fatal aviation mishaps, and the visual system is particularly prone to provoking vection. This article describes the Virtual Reality Vection System (VRVS), which uses computer-controlled virtual reality technology to induce vection under controlled conditions for training, demonstration, testing, and research. Materials and Methods The VRVS enables the precise specification of the number and appearance of visual stimulus elements intended to generate vection, including photorealistic images. The VRVS can present visual stimuli on any OpenXR-capable virtual reality headset. The VRVS currently records 2 types of behavioral responses, button presses to indicate the presence and duration of vection and the voltage of a handheld linear potentiometer to indicate the presence, duration, and magnitude of vection. Results An approved test plan helped guide, organize, document, and validate the VRVS during its development. Under this plan, a pair of tests guided hardware and software development of the VRVS system. Although the first test verified the ability of the VRVS to generate and measure vection, it also demonstrated that the VRVS can quickly manipulate the visual stimuli from one trial to the next so that the VRVS can support complex experimental designs. The second test used these capabilities to verify that the VRVS can characterize vection in a more analytic fashion using a masking paradigm. Specifically, the test assessed whether random stimulus elements injected into the vection-inducing stimulus disrupted vection in a quantifiable fashion. This work opens the door to studies that characterize the necessary and sufficient visual elements for vection-based SD. Discussion The VRVS is currently used to research, develop, test, and evaluate mitigation strategies targeting vection-related SD in degraded visual environments. Similarly, the VRVS is supporting research to develop methods to predict individual differences in visually induced motion sickness susceptibilities. The VRVS is currently being integrated with a precision motor-controlled rotating Barany chair for multisensory studies. Everyday actions like moving the head, walking around, and grasping objects are typically self-controlled. This presents a problem when studying the signals encoding such actions because active self-movement is difficult to control experimentally. Available techniques demand repeatable trials, but each action is unique, making it difficult to measure fundamental properties like psychophysical thresholds. We present a novel paradigm that recovers both precision and bias of self-movement signals with minimal constraint on the participant. The paradigm relies on linking image motion to previous self-movement, and two experimental phases to extract the signal encoding the latter. The paradigm takes care of a hidden source of external noise not previously accounted for in techniques that link display motion to self-movement in real time (e.g., virtual reality). We use head rotations as an example of self-movement, and show that the precision of the signals encoding head movement depends on whether they are being used to judge visual motion or auditory motion. We find that perceived motion is slowed during head movement in both cases. The "nonimage" signals encoding active head rotation (motor commands, proprioception, and vestibular cues) are therefore biased toward lower speeds and/or displacements. In a second experiment, we trained participants to rotate their heads at different rates and found that the imprecision of the head rotation signal rises proportionally with head speed (Weber's law). We discuss the findings in terms of the different motion cues used by vision and hearing, and the implications they have for Bayesian models of motion perception. Using head movements, we show that 1) precision is greater when active head rotation is performed using visual comparison stimuli versus auditory; 2) precision decreases with head speed (Weber's law); 3) perceived speed is lower during head rotation. Visual stimulation can generate illusory self-motion perception (vection) and cause motion sickness among susceptible people, but the underlying neural mechanism is not fully understood. In this study, SSVEP responses to visual stimuli presented in different parts of the visual field are examined in individuals with different susceptibilities to motion sickness to identify correlates of motion sickness. Alpha band SSVEP data were collected from fifteen university students when they were watching roll-vection-inducing visual stimulation containing: (1) an achromatic checkerboard flickering at 8.6 Hz in the central visual field (CVF) and (2) rotating dots pattern flickering at 12 Hz in the peripheral visual field. Rotating visual stimuli provoked explicit roll-vection perception in all participants. The motion sickness resistant participants showed reduced SSVEP response to CVF checkerboard during vection, while the motion sickness susceptible participants showed increased SSVEP response. The changes of SSVEP in the presence of vection significantly correlated with individual motion sickness susceptibility and rated scores on simulator sickness symptoms. Objective: Brain networks mediating vestibular perception of self‐motion overlap with those mediating balance. A systematic mapping of vestibular perceptual pathways in the thalamus may reveal new brain modulation targets for improving balance in neurological conditions. Methods: Here, we systematically report how magnetic resonance‐guided focused ultrasound surgery of the nucleus ventralis intermedius of the thalamus commonly evokes transient patient‐reported illusions of self‐motion. In 46 consecutive patients, we linked the descriptions of self‐motion to sonication power and 3‐dimensional (3D) coordinates of sonication targets. Target coordinates were normalized using a standard atlas, and a 3D model of the nucleus ventralis intermedius and adjacent structures was created to link sonication target to the illusion. Results: A total of 63% of patients reported illusions of self‐motion, which were more likely with increased sonication power and with targets located more inferiorly along the rostrocaudal axis. Higher power and more inferiorly targeted sonications increased the likelihood of experiencing illusions of self‐motion by 4 and 2 times, respectively (odds ratios = 4.03 for power, 2.098 for location). Interpretation: The phenomenon of magnetic vestibular stimulation is the most plausible explanation for these illusions of self‐motion. Temporary unilateral modulation of vestibular pathways (via magnetic resonance‐guided focused ultrasound) unveils the central adaptation to the magnetic field‐induced peripheral vestibular bias, leading to an explicable illusion of motion. Consequently, systematic mapping of vestibular perceptual pathways via magnetic resonance‐guided focused ultrasound may reveal new intracerebral targets for improving balance in neurological conditions. Connectivity maps are now available for the 360 cortical regions in the Human Connectome Project Multimodal Parcellation atlas. Here we add function to these maps by measuring selective fMRI activations and functional connectivity increases to stationary visual stimuli of faces, scenes, body parts and tools from 956 HCP participants. Faces activate regions in the ventrolateral visual cortical stream (FFC), in the superior temporal sulcus (STS) visual stream for face and head motion; and inferior parietal visual (PGi) and somatosensory (PF) regions. Scenes activate ventromedial visual stream VMV and PHA regions in the parahippocampal scene area; medial (7m) and lateral parietal (PGp) regions; and the reward-related medial orbitofrontal cortex. Body parts activate the inferior temporal cortex object regions (TE1p, TE2p); but also visual motion regions (MT, MST, FST); and the inferior parietal visual (PGi, PGs) and somatosensory (PF) regions; and the unpleasant-related lateral orbitofrontal cortex. Tools activate an intermediate ventral stream area (VMV3, VVC, PHA3); visual motion regions (FST); somatosensory (1, 2); and auditory (A4, A5) cortical regions. The findings add function to cortical connectivity maps; and show how stationary visual stimuli activate other cortical regions related to their associations, including visual motion, somatosensory, auditory, semantic, and orbitofrontal cortex value-related, regions. Older adults demonstrate impairments in navigation that cannot be explained by general cognitive and motor declines. Previous work has shown that older adults may combine sensory cues during navigation differently than younger adults, though this work has largely been done in dark environments where sensory integration may differ from full-cue environments. Here, we test whether aging adults optimally combine cues from two sensory systems critical for navigation: vision (landmarks) and body-based self-motion cues. Participants completed a homing (triangle completion) task using immersive virtual reality to offer the ability to navigate in a well-lit environment including visibility of the ground plane. An optimal model, based on principles of maximum-likelihood estimation, predicts that precision in homing should increase with multisensory information in a manner consistent with each individual sensory cue's perceived reliability (measured by variability). We found that well-aging adults (with normal or corrected-to-normal sensory acuity and active lifestyles) were more variable and less accurate than younger adults during navigation. Both older and younger adults relied more on their visual systems than a maximum likelihood estimation model would suggest. Overall, younger adults' visual weighting matched the model's predictions whereas older adults showed sub-optimal sensory weighting. In addition, high inter-individual differences were seen in both younger and older adults. These results suggest that older adults do not optimally weight each sensory system when combined during navigation, and that older adults may benefit from interventions that help them recalibrate the combination of visual and self-motion cues for navigation. Background: Individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) syndrome often report navigation difficulties, accompanied by impairments in egocentric and allocentric spatial memory. However, studies have shown that both bodily (e.g., motor commands, proprioception, vestibular information) and visual-cognitive (e.g., maps, directional arrows, attentional markers) cues can support spatial memory in MCI. Objective: We aimed to assess navigation cues for innovative spatial training in aging. Methods: Fifteen MCI patients were recruited for this study. Their egocentric and allocentric memory recall performances were tested through a navigation task with five different virtual reality (VR) assistive encoding navigation procedures (bodily, vision only, interactive allocentric map, reduced executive load, free navigation without cues). Bodily condition consisted of an immersive VR setup to engage self-motion cues, vision only condition consisted of passive navigation without interaction, in the interactive allocentric map condition patients could use a bird-view map, in the reduced executive load condition directional cues and attentional markers were employed, and during free navigation no aid was implemented. Results: Bodily condition improved spatial memory compared to vision only and free navigation without cues. In addition, the interactive allocentric map was superior to the free navigation without cues. Surprisingly, the reduced executive load was comparable to vison only condition. Moreover, a detrimental impact of free navigation was observed on allocentric memory across testing trials. Conclusions: These findings challenge the notion of an amodal representation of space in aging, suggesting that spatial maps can be influenced by the modality in which the environment was originally encoded. Purpose: First, testing an intervention of neuromodulation based on motor imagery and action observation as a promoter of motor adaptation of a complex motor task involving balance. Second, determining what prior balance factors can affect the motor adaptation task. Methods: A double-blind randomized controlled trial was performed. Forty-eight healthy subjects were recruited. The balance of all participants during gait and standing was assessed before adapting to the complex, multi-limb motor task of riding an inverse steering bicycle (ISB). Two interventions were carried out interleaved among trials of adaptation to the motor task: the experimental group (n = 24) was asked to perform neuromodulation (EN) by watching first-person ISB riding through immersive VR glasses and, simultaneously, mentally mimicking the movements. The control group (CG) was asked to watch a slideshow video of steady landscape images. Results: The results showed that the EN group did not improve the motor adaptation rate and induced higher adaptation times with respect to the CG. However, while the motor adaptation success showed a significant dependence on the prior proprioceptive participation in balance in the CG, the EN group did not present any relationship between the prior balance profile and motor adaptation outcome. Conclusions: Results point to a benefit of the visually guided neuromodulation for the motor adaptation of the subjects with low participation of proprioception in balance. Moreover, the results from the control group would allow to disclose prognostic factors about the success of the motor adaptation, and also prescription criteria for the proposed neuromodulation based on the balance profile. Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a chronic disorder of perceived unsteadiness. Symptoms can be exacerbated in visually complex stationary or moving environment. Visual dependence and increased motion sensitivity are predictors for PPPD but its pathophysiology remains unknown. We hypothesized an abnormal sensory–perceptual scaling mechanism in PPPD and tested visual- and vestibular perceptional thresholds in 32 patients and 28 age-matched healthy control subjects (HC). All participants showed normal vestibular function tests on quantitative testing. Visual motion coherence thresholds were assessed by random dot kinetomatograms. Vestibular perceptional thresholds of egomotion were assessed by binaural galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) and passive chair rotation around an earth-vertical axis. Chair rotation trials were contrasted with no-motion (sham) stimulus trials. Mean thresholds of visual motion perception were higher in patients compared to HC. The perception threshold of GVS was lower in patients but the threshold of correctly perceived egomotion during chair rotation did not differ. Interestingly, the number of trials with correct perception in the no-motion condition increased with the threshold of correct responses for rotatory egomotion in patients. Unlike expected, PPPD patients required more coherently moving random dots than HC to perceive visual motion. A poorer complex visual motion recognition, e.g., traffic visual stimuli, may increase anxiety and levels of uncertainty as visuomotor reactions might occur delayed. The vestibular rotatory perception threshold predicted the probability of making false assignments in the sham condition in PPPD, i.e., patients who readily recognize the correct egomotion direction are prone to perceive egomotion in the no-motion condition. Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a functional neuro-otologic disorder that is the most frequent cause of chronic vestibular syndrome. The core vestibular symptoms include dizziness, unsteadiness, and non-spinning vertigo, which are exacerbated by an upright posture or walking, active or passive motion, and exposure to moving or complex visual stimuli. PPPD is mostly precipitated by acute or episodic vestibular diseases; however, its symptoms cannot be accounted for by its precipitants. PPPD is not a diagnosis of exclusion, but may coexist with other structural diseases. Thus, when diagnosing PPPD, the patient's symptoms must be explained by PPPD alone or by PPPD in combination with a structural illness. PPPD is most frequently observed at approximately 50 years of age, with a female predominance. Conventional vestibular tests do not reveal any specific signs of PPPD. However, the head roll-tilt subjective visual vertical test and gaze stability test after exposure to moving visual stimuli may detect the characteristic features of PPPD, that is, somatosensory- and visually-dependent spatial orientation, respectively. Therefore, these tests could be used as diagnostic tools for PPPD. Regarding the pathophysiology of PPPD, neuroimaging studies suggest shifts in interactions among visuo-vestibular, sensorimotor, and emotional networks, where visual inputs dominate over vestibular inputs. Postural control also shifts, leading to the stiffening of the lower body. To treat PPPD, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors/serotonin noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors, vestibular rehabilitation, and cognitive behavioral therapy are used alone or in combination. This study directly compared the novel unexpected vection hypothesis and postural instability-based explanations of cybersickness in virtual reality (VR) using head-mounted displays (HMD) for the first time within a commercial VR game. A total of 40 participants (19 males and 21 females) played an HMD-VR game (Aircar) for up to 14 min, or until their first experience of cybersickness. Based on their self-reports, 24 of these participants were classified as being ‘sick’ during the experiment, with the remainder being classified as ‘well’. Consistent with the unexpected vection hypothesis, we found that: (1) ‘sick’ participants were significantly more likely to report unexpected vection (i.e., an experience of self-motion that was different to what they had been expecting), and (2) sickness severity increased (exponentially) with the strength of any unexpected (but not expected) vection. Our results also supported the predictions of postural instability theory, finding that the onset of cybersickness was typically preceded by an increase in participants’ postural instability. However, when both sway and vection measures were combined, only unexpected vection was found to significantly predict the occurrence of sickness. These findings highlight the importance of unusual vection experiences and postural instability in understanding cybersickness. The illusory experience of self-motion known as vection, is a multisensory phenomenon relevant to self-motion processes. While some studies have shown that neck muscle vibrations can improve self-motion parameter estimation, the influence on vection remains unknown. Further, few studies measured cybersickness (CS), presence, and vection concurrently and have shown conflicting results. It was hypothesized that 1) neck vibrations would enhance vection and presence, and 2) CS to negatively relate to presence and vection, whereas presence and vection to positively relate to one another. Thirty-two participants were visually and audibly immersed in a virtual reality flight simulator and occasional neck muscle vibrations were presented. Vection onset and duration were reported through button presses. Turning angle estimations and ratings of vection quality, presence, and CS were obtained after completion of the flights. Results showed no influence of vibrations on turning angle estimation errors, but a medium positive effect of vibrations on vection quality was found. Presence and vection quality were positively related, and no strong association between CS and presence or vection was found. It is concluded that neck vibrations may enhance vection and presence, however, from the current study it is unclear whether this is due to proprioceptive or tactile stimulation. Humanoid robots still have a low-level perception of their surroundings, which is a formidable obstacle to performing complex tasks. To improve their perceptual capabilities, high-level semantic information can be incorporated into their perceptual framework so that they can gain the ability to infer and understand their environment accurately. Among the various techniques available, semantic Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) becomes a promising avenue for achieving this perception enhancement. While semantic SLAM can enhance a robot's ability to perform tasks, the accurate perception, and association of semantic objects in complex and dynamic environments remain challenging. Hence, the need arises for a solution that swiftly and precisely associates object measurements with landmarks, considering their motion properties, and promptly rectifies erroneous associations in real time. To this end, we propose a semantic perception approach designed explicitly for dynamic environments, adept at distinguishing between dynamic and static objects. Furthermore, we propose two association strategies: dynamic object association based on semantic map points and static object association based on object pose information. And as the number of object measurements associated with the landmarks increases, we perform the association validation algorithm to verify the association for the landmark to improve the accuracy of the association. The proposed method is extensively evaluated on both simulated indoor sequences obtained from humanoid robot viewpoints and the KITTI dataset. Background: Threat and individual differences in threat-processing bias perception of stimuli in the environment. Yet, their effect on perception of one's own (body-based) self-motion in space is unknown. Here, we tested the effects of threat on self-motion perception using a multisensory motion simulator with concurrent threatening or neutral auditory stimuli. Results: Strikingly, threat had opposite effects on vestibular and visual self-motion perception, leading to overestimation of vestibular, but underestimation of visual self-motions. Trait anxiety tended to be associated with an enhanced effect of threat on estimates of self-motion for both modalities. Conclusions: Enhanced vestibular perception under threat might stem from shared neural substrates with emotional processing, whereas diminished visual self-motion perception may indicate that a threatening stimulus diverts attention away from optic flow integration. Virtual reality has become increasingly present, which gives rise to new philosophical questions: what is the nature of virtual reality experiences? Would they be exactly like usual perceptions, or do they have some feature that differentiates them? Are they illusory? We argue that virtual reality experiences should not be treated as illusory, as claimed by most contemporary theorists on the topic, but rather as allusive, conditioned to the incorporation of hardware and practical knowledge involved in the use of technology. To this end, we address their relation with illusions, explore how they relate to our everyday experiences and present our proposal that they can be understood as allusions. We then show that their allusive character does not make them indistinguishable from non-virtual experiences, since the biological and sensorimotor limits of cognition provide the threshold of differentiation, even in cases of augmented reality. In addition, we explore the emergence of augmented reality technology and discuss the possibility of systematically replacing perception with illusory projections. However, to date, there is no empirical evidence to support this possibility. We highlight the importance of the relationship between perception and action in the physical environment and argue that specific errors in virtual experiences do not characterize their state as illusory. Human studies of early brain development have been limited by extant neuroimaging methods. MRI scanners present logistical challenges for imaging young children, while alternative modalities like functional near‐infrared spectroscopy have traditionally been limited by image quality due to sparse sampling. In addition, conventional tasks for brain mapping elicit low task engagement, high head motion, and considerable participant attrition in pediatric populations. As a result, typical and atypical developmental trajectories of processes such as language acquisition remain understudied during sensitive periods over the first years of life. We evaluate high‐density diffuse optical tomography (HD‐DOT) imaging combined with movie stimuli for high resolution optical neuroimaging in awake children ranging from 1 to 7 years of age. We built an HD‐DOT system with design features geared towards enhancing both image quality and child comfort. Furthermore, we characterized a library of animated movie clips as a stimulus set for brain mapping and we optimized associated data analysis pipelines. Together, these tools could map cortical responses to movies and contained features such as speech in both adults and awake young children. This study lays the groundwork for future research to investigate response variability in larger pediatric samples and atypical trajectories of early brain development in clinical populations. (1) Background: Childhood-onset schizophrenia (COS) is a rare type of psychotic disorder characterized by delusions, hallucinations, grossly disorganized behavior, and poor psychosocial functioning. The etiology of COS is unknown, but neurodevelopmental factors are likely to play a critical role. A potential neurodevelopmental anomaly marker is the dorsal visual system dysfunction, which is implicated in motion perception, spatial functions, and attention. (2) Methods: To elucidate the role of the dorsal visual system in COS, we investigated 21 patients with COS and 21 control participants matched for age, sex, education, IQ, and parental socioeconomic status. Participants completed a motion and form coherence task, during which one assesses an individual's ability to detect the direction of motion within a field of moving elements or dots and to recognize a meaningful form or object from a set of fragmented or disconnected visual elements, respectively. The Rotating Snakes illusion is a visual illusion where a stationary image elicits a compelling sense of anomalous motion. There have been recurring albeit anecdotal claims that the perception of illusory motion is more salient when the image consists of patterns with the combination of blue and yellow; however, there is limited empirical evidence that supports those claims. In the present study, we aimed to assess whether the Rotating Snakes illusion is more salient in its blue-yellow variation, compared to red-green and greyscale variations when the luminance of corresponding elements within the patterns were equated. Using the cancellation method, we found that the velocity required to establish perceptual stationarity was indeed greater for the stimulus composed of patterns with a blue-yellow combination than the other two variants. Background and Objective: Dyspnoea is a debilitating symptom in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and a range of other chronic cardiopulmonary diseases and is often associated with anxiety and depression. The present study examined the effect of visually‐induced mood shifts on exertional dyspnoea in individuals with COPD. Methods: Following familiarization, 20 participants with mild to severe COPD (age 57–79 years) attended three experimental sessions on separate days, performing two 5‐min treadmill exercise tests separated by a 30‐min interval on each day. During each exercise test, participants viewed either a positive, negative or neutral set of images sourced from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) and rated dyspnoea or leg fatigue (0–10). Heart rate (HR) and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) were measured at 1‐min intervals during each test. Mood valence ratings were obtained using Self‐Assessment Manikin (SAM) scale (1–9). Results: Mood valence ratings were significantly higher when viewing positive (end‐exercise mean ± SEM = 7.6 ± 0.3) compared to negative IAPS images (2.4 ± 0.3, p < 0.001). Dyspnoea intensity (mean ± SEM = 5.8 ± 0.4) and dyspnoea unpleasantness (5.6 ± 0.3) when viewing negative images were significantly higher compared to positive images (4.2 ± 0.4, p = 0.004 and 3.4 ± 0.5, p = 0.003). Eighty‐five percent of participants (n = 17) met the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) criteria for both dyspnoea intensity and unpleasantness. HR, SpO2 and leg fatigue did not differ significantly between conditions. Conclusion: These findings indicate that the negative affective state worsens dyspnoea in COPD, thereby suggesting strategies aimed at reducing the likelihood of negative mood or improving the mood may be effective in managing morbidity associated with dyspnoea in COPD. Background: The Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) is a commonly used method for clinically evaluating balance after traumatic brain injury. The utilization of force plates, characterized by their cost-effectiveness and portability, facilitates the integration of instrumentation into the BESS protocol. Despite the enhanced precision associated with instrumented measures, there remains a need to determine the clinical significance and feasibility of such measures within pediatric cohorts. Objective: To report a comprehensive set of posturographic measures obtained during instrumented BESS and to examine the concurrent validity, reliability, and feasibility of instrumented BESS in the pediatric point of care setting. Methods: Thirty-seven participants (18 female; aged 13.32 ± 3.31 years) performed BESS while standing on a force plate to simultaneously compute stabilometric measures (instrumented BESS). Ellipse area (EA), path length (PL), and sway velocity (VM) were obtained for each of the six BESS positions and compared with the respective BESS scores. Additionally, the effects of sex and age were explored. A second BESS repetition was performed to evaluate the test–retest reliability. Feedback questionnaires were handed out after testing to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed protocol. Results: The BESS total score was 20.81 ± 6.28. While there was no statistically significant age or sex dependency in the BESS results, instrumented posturography demonstrated an age dependency in EA, VM, and PL. The one-leg stance on a soft surface resulted in the highest BESS score (8.38 ± 1.76), EA (218.78 cm2 ± 168.65), PL (4386.91 mm ± 1859.00), and VM (21.93 mm/s ± 9.29). The Spearman's coefficient displayed moderate to high correlations between the EA (rs = 0.429–0.770, p = 0.001–0.009), PL (rs = 0.451–0.809, p = 0.001–0.006), and VM (rs = 0.451–0.809, p = 0.001–0.006) when compared with the BESS scores for all testing positions, except for the one-leg stance on a soft surface. The BESS total score significantly correlated during the first and second repetition (rs = 0.734, p ≤ 0.001), as did errors during the different testing positions (rs = 0.489–0.799, p ≤ 0.001–0.002), except during the two-legged stance on a soft surface. VM and PL correlated significantly in all testing positions (rs = 0.465–0.675, p ≤ 0.001–0.004; (rs = 0.465–0.675, p ≤ 0.001–0.004), as did EA for all positions except for the two-legged stance on a soft surface (rs = 0.392–0.581, p ≤ 0.001–0.016). A total of 92% of participants stated that the instructions for the testing procedure were very well-explained, while 78% of participants enjoyed the balance testing, and 61% of participants could not decide whether the testing was easy or hard to perform. Conclusions: Instrumented posturography may complement clinical assessment in investigating postural control in children and adolescents. While the BESS score only allows for the consideration of a total score approximating postural control, instrumented posturography offers several parameters representing the responsiveness and magnitude of body sway as well as a more differentiated analysis of movement trajectory. Concise instrumented posturography protocols should be developed to augment neuropediatric assessments in cases where a deficiency in postural control is suspected, potentially stemming from disruptions in the processing of visual, proprioceptive, and/or vestibular information. The current investigation examined whether visual motion without continuous visual displacement could effectively induce self-motion perception (vection). Four-stroke apparent motions (4SAM) were employed in the experiments as visual inducers. The 4SAM pattern contained luminance-defined motion energy equivalent to the real motion pattern, and the participants perceived unidirectional motion according to the motion energy but without displacements (the visual elements flickered on the spot). The experiments revealed that the 4SAM stimulus could effectively induce vection in the horizontal, expanding, or rotational directions, although its strength was significantly weaker than that induced by the real-motion stimulus. This result suggests that visual displacement is not essential, and the luminance-defined motion energy and/or the resulting perceived motion of the visual inducer would be sufficient for inducing visual self-motion perception. Conversely, when the 4SAM and real-motion patterns were presented simultaneously, self-motion perception was mainly determined in accordance with real motion, suggesting that the real-motion stimulus is a predominant determinant of vection. The sensation of self-motion in the absence of physical motion, known as vection, has been scientifically investigated for over a century. As objective measures of, or physiological correlates to, vection have yet to emerge, researchers have typically employed a variety of subjective methods to quantify the phenomenon of vection. These measures can be broadly categorized into the occurrence of vection (e.g., binary choice yes/no), temporal characteristics of vection (e.g., onset time/latency, duration), the quality of the vection experience (e.g., intensity rating scales, magnitude estimation), or indirect (e.g., distance travelled) measures. The present review provides an overview and critical evaluation of the most utilized vection measures to date and assesses their respective merit. Furthermore, recommendations for the selection of the most appropriate vection measures will be provided to assist with the process of vection research and to help improve the comparability of research findings across different vection studies. Vehicles, in which humans spend a significant portion of their time, are not just means of transportation, but also places for various meaningful activities. In particular, virtual reality (VR) is an attractive medium that offers a variety of possibilities, including entertainment, education, and business/casual meetings. However, one impediment is cybersickness and motion sickness - the former arises from virtual motion, and the latter from actual motion. As sickness primarily stems from sensory conflicts between the visual (from moving VR imagery) and vestibular motions (from the moving vehicle), we propose integrating actual motion information, emulating its linear and circular optical flow patterns, into the VR content background. This way, the motion information between the virtual/visual and real/vestibular systems is synchronized, reducing the extent of sickness in the vehicle, without potentially disturbing content delivery. The effectiveness of the proposed approach was tested through two on-vehicle experiments, one in a car and the other in a ship. The results showed a significant reduction in sickness without degrading the immersive VR experience while riding the respective vehicles.

Understanding why falls during pregnancy occur at over 25% rate over gestation has clinical impacts on the health of pregnant individuals. Attention, proprioception, and perception of the environment are required to prevent trips and falls. This research aimed to understand how the changes to these neurocognitive processes control obstacle avoidance through gestation. Seventeen pregnant participants were tested five times in 6-week intervals. Participants walked an obstacle course (OC), and we analyzed the crossings over obstacles that were set to 10% of participants' body height. Participants also performed an attentional network test (ANT: performance of specific components of attention), an obstacle perception task (OP: ability to visually define an obstacle and translate that to a body posture), and a joint position sense task (JPS: ability to recognize and recreate a joint position from somatosensation). In the OC task, average leading and trailing foot crossing heights significantly reduced by 13% and 23% respectively, with no change in variation, between weeks 13 and 31 of pregnancy, indicating an increased risk of obstacle contact during this time. The variability in minimum leading foot distances from the obstacle was correlated with all three neurocognition tasks (ANT, OP, and JPS). Increased fall rates in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy may be driven by changes in attention, with additional contributions of joint position sense and environmental perception at various stages of gestation. Ensemble perception allows our visual system to process large amounts of information efficiently by summarizing its statistical properties. A key aspect of ensemble perception is the devaluation of outlying elements, which leads to more informative summary statistics with reduced variance and a more representative mean. However, the mechanisms underlying this outlier rejection process are not well understood. One possibility is that outliers are selectively excluded before summarization. To test this, we investigated whether only weaker items were excluded from averaging. We manipulated the encoding strength of items in a display by changing the emotional intensities of faces, the spatial location of emotional outliers, and the spatial distribution of emotional faces. We found that the response to outliers varied depending on their location. Specifically, outliers were more likely to be excluded from averaging when presented in more peripheral regions, while their exclusion was partial in parafoveal regions. In other words, outlier rejection in ensemble processing is more flexible than the supposed rigid designation of weighting against outliers. Alternatively, the results fit well with hierarchically structured pooling, during which outliers are discounted more dynamically without positing any separate selective mechanism before summarization. Agreeableness is one of the five personality traits which is associated with theory of mind (ToM) abilities. One of the critical processes involved in ToM is the decoding of emotional cues. In the present study, we investigated whether this process is modulated by agreeableness using electroencephalography (EEG) while taking into account task complexity and sex differences that are expected to moderate the relationship between emotional decoding and agreeableness. This approach allowed us to identify at which stage of the neural processing agreeableness kicks in, in order to distinguish the impact on early, perceptual processes from slower, inferential processing. Two tasks were employed and submitted to 62 participants during EEG recording: the reading the mind in the eyes (RME) task, requiring the decoding of complex mental states from eye expressions, and the biological (e)motion task, involving the perception of basic emotional actions through point‐light body stimuli. Event‐related potential (ERP) results showed a significant correlation between agreeableness and the contrast for emotional and non‐emotional trials in a late time window only during the RME task. Specifically, higher levels of agreeableness were associated with a deeper neural processing of emotional versus non‐emotional trials within the whole and male samples. In contrast, the modulation in females was negligible. The source analysis highlighted that this ERP‐agreeableness association engages the ventromedial prefrontal cortex. In this paper, we propose a method to increase vection strength through video image processing in the periphery, rather than the center, of the visual field. Specifically, we propose two methods. One is an image stretching process in the visual periphery and the other is an alpha-blending process with an expanding circle grating in the periphery of the field. We clarified the relationship between the processing conditions and vection strength and found that stretching in the left–right direction increased vection strength while stretching in the downward direction did not. Vestibular disorders are prevalent and debilitating conditions of the inner ear and brain which affect balance, coordination, and the integration of multisensory inputs. A growing body of research has linked vestibular disorders to cognitive problems, most notably attention, visuospatial perception, spatial memory, and executive function. However, the mechanistic bases of these cognitive sequelae remain poorly defined, and there is a gap between our theoretical understanding of vestibular cognitive dysfunction, and how best to identify and manage this within clinical practice. This article takes stock of these shortcomings and provides recommendations and priorities for healthcare professionals who assess and treat vestibular disorders, and for researchers developing cognitive models and rehabilitation interventions. We highlight the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration for developing and evaluating clinically relevant theoretical models of vestibular cognition, to advance research and treatment. Introduction and purpose: The parkinsonian syndrome is a component of Parkinson's disease. A thorough neurological examination can detect symptoms belonging to the parkinsonian syndrome. Diagnosis using the Queen Square Brain Bank criteria is based on the presence of bradykinesia along with one additional symptom in the patient. These include muscle rigidity or resting tremors at a frequency of 4-6 Hz, or postural disturbances that cannot be explained by visual, vestibular, cerebellar, or deep sensory disorders. The parkinsonian syndrome can occur in idiopathic Parkinson's disease, hereditary disorders, secondary parkinsonism, or be part of an atypical parkinsonian syndrome. The aim of the study was to discuss the diagnostic features and differences in the occurrence of the parkinsonian syndrome as a component of Parkinson's disease, both within the context of other neurological disorders. Materials and method: The foundation of the research was medical articles gathered from the Google Scholar database. The studies were conducted by analyzing keywords such as "parkinsonism," "druginduced parkinsonism," and "vascular parkinsonism". Results: Secondary parkinsonism, or secondary parkinsonism syndrome, can be indicated by clinical features such as: disease onset below the age of 40, abrupt onset, rapid disease progression, symptoms related to medication use, and symptoms associated with the underlying condition. In addition to clinical evaluation, imaging studies are also employed. Conclusions: Various conditions can lead to the development of secondary parkinsonism, including hydrocephalus, brain tumors, encephalitis, cerebral atherosclerosis, traumatic brain injuries, medications, and poisoning. Background: In previous studies, most research on motion perception have been conducted under background-free condition when the stimulus moved in a plane parallel to the observer. In real-life situations, people's perception of the motion state of objects is usually done under different visual noise. Based on the occlusion paradigm, this study aimed to investigate whether different background information and motion speed affect the trend and accuracy of time-to-collision (TTC) estimation when stimuli move in a plane parallel to the observer. Methods: Thirty five college students (mean age = 20.94, SD = 2.95, range = 18-28 years) participated in experiment 1, and used a 2 (background orientation: horizontal, vertical) × 3 (motion speed: slow, medium, fast) design to explore the effect of different line segment orientations and motion speed on TTC estimation performance; 36 college students (mean age = 20.81, SD = 2.82, range = 18-28 years) participated in experiment 2, and used a 2 (background dimension: two-dimensional background, three-dimensional background) × 3 (motion speed: slow, medium, fast) design to explore the effect of different background dimensions and motion speed on the performance of TTC estimation. The data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0. Results: The results revealed that: (1) The TTC was underestimated for the slow speed condition and overestimated for the medium and fast speed conditions. (2) The highest accuracy of TTC estimation was obtained for the fast condition. (3) The TTC were overestimated for the vertical background condition and underestimated for the horizontal background condition. (4) Compared to the two-dimensional background, the TTC was overestimated in the three-dimensional background. Conclusions: Object motion speed affected the TTC estimation performance, and different background information affected the TTC estimation performance when the object moved in a plane parallel to the observer. The ability to perceive biological motion is crucial for human survival, social interactions, and communication. Over the years, researchers have studied the mechanisms and neurobiological substrates that enable this ability. In a previous study, we proposed a descriptive Bayesian simulation model to represent the dorsal pathway of the visual system, which processes motion information. The model was inspired by recent studies that questioned the impact of dynamic form cues in biological motion perception and was trained to distinguish the direction of a soccer ball from a set of complex biological motion soccer-kick stimuli. However, the model was unable to simulate the reaction times of the athletes in a credible manner, and a few subjects could not be simulated. In this current work, we implemented a novel disremembering strategy to incorporate neural adaptation at the decision-making level, which improved the model's ability to simulate the athletes' reaction times. We also introduced receptive fields to detect rotational optic flow patterns not considered in the previous model to simulate a new subject and improve the correlation between the simulation and experimental data. The findings suggest that rotational optic flow plays a critical role in the decision-making process and sheds light on how different individuals perform at different levels. The correlation analysis of human versus simulation data shows a significant, almost perfect correlation between experimental and simulated angular thresholds and slopes, respectively. Visual motion signals can produce self-motion perception known as vection in observers. Vection can be generated by illusory motions in the form of global expantion in still images as well as by visual motion signals. The perception of vection can be enhanced by flickering images at a rate of 5 Hz. This study examined the illusory motion and vection induced by a printed static image under flickering ambient light at rates up to 100 Hz. The perception of illusory motion and vection were enhanced by flickering ambient lights at 50, 75, and 100 Hz. The enhancement effect was higher for the flicker rates expected to be detectable by humans. The growing popularity of virtual reality systems has led to a renewed interest in understanding the neurophysiological correlates of the illusion of self-motion (vection), a phenomenon that can be both intentionally induced or avoided in such systems, depending on the application. Recent research has highlighted the modulation of α power oscillations over the superior parietal cortex during vection, suggesting the occurrence of inhibitory mechanisms in the sensorimotor and vestibular functional networks to resolve the inherent visuo-vestibular conflict. The present study aims to further explore this relationship and investigate whether neuromodulating these waves could causally affect the quality of vection. In a crossover design, 22 healthy volunteers received high amplitude and focused α-tACS (transcranial alternating current stimulation) over the superior parietal cortex while experiencing visually induced vection triggered by optokinetic stimulation. The tACS was tuned to each participant's individual α peak frequency, with θ-tACS and sham stimulation serving as controls. Overall, participants experienced better quality vection during α-tACS compared with control θ-tACS and sham stimulations, as quantified by the intensity of vection. The observed neuromodulation supports a causal relationship between parietal α oscillations and visually induced self-motion illusions, with their entrainment triggering overinhibition of the conflict within the sensorimotor and vestibular functional networks. These results confirm the potential of noninvasive brain stimulation for modulating visuo-vestibular conflicts, which could help to enhance the sense of presence in virtual reality environments. While navigating through the surroundings, we constantly rely on inertial vestibular signals for self-motion along with visual and acoustic spatial references from the environment. However, the interaction between inertial cues and environmental spatial references is not yet fully understood. Here we investigated whether vestibular self-motion sensitivity is influenced by sensory spatial references. Healthy participants were administered a Vestibular Self-Motion Detection Task in which they were asked to detect vestibular self-motion sensations induced by low-intensity Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation. Participants performed this detection task with or without an external visual or acoustic spatial reference placed directly in front of them. We computed the d prime ( d ′ ) as a measure of participants' vestibular sensitivity and the criterion as an index of their response bias. Results showed that the visual spatial reference increased sensitivity to detect vestibular self-motion. Conversely, the acoustic spatial reference did not influence self-motion sensitivity. Both visual and auditory spatial references did not cause changes in response bias. Environmental visual spatial references provide relevant information to enhance our ability to perceive inertial self-motion cues, suggesting a specific interaction between visual and vestibular systems in self-motion perception. Vection is typically defined as the embodied illusion of self-motion in the absence of real physical movement through space. Vection can occur in real-life situations (e.g., 'train illusion') and in virtual environments and simulators. The vast majority of vection research focuses on vection caused by visual stimulation. Even though visually induced vection is arguably the most compelling type of vection, the role of nonvisual sensory inputs, such as auditory, biomechanical, tactile, and vestibular cues, have recently gained more attention. Non-visual cues can play an important role in inducing vection in two ways. First, nonvisual cues can affect the occurrence and strength of vection when added to corresponding visual information. Second, nonvisual cues can also elicit vection in the absence of visual information, for instance when observers are blindfolded or tested in darkness. The present paper provides a narrative review of the literature on multimodal contributions to vection. We will discuss both the theoretical and applied relevance of multisensory processing as related to the experience of vection and provide design considerations on how to enhance vection in various contexts. Aging impacts human observer's performance in a wide range of visual tasks and notably in motion discrimination. Despite numerous studies, we still poorly understand how optic flow processing is impacted in healthy older adults. Here, we estimated motion coherence thresholds in two groups of younger (age: 18–30, n = 42) and older (70–90, n = 42) adult participants for the three components of optic flow (translational, radial and rotational patterns). Stimuli were dynamic random-dot kinematograms (RDKs) projected on a large screen. Participants had to report their perceived direction of motion (leftward versus rightward for translational, inward versus outward for radial and clockwise versus anti-clockwise for rotational patterns). Stimuli had an average speed of 7°/s (additional recordings were performed at 14°/s) and were either presented full-field or in peripheral vision. Statistical analyses showed that thresholds in older adults were similar to those measured in younger participants for translational patterns, thresholds for radial patterns were significantly increased in our slowest condition and thresholds for rotational patterns were significantly decreased. Altogether, these findings support the idea that aging does not lead to a general decline in visual perception but rather has specific effects on the processing of each optic flow component. Illusory self-motion ("vection") has been used to present a sense of movement in virtual reality (VR) and other similar applications. It is crucial in vection research to present a stronger sense of movement. Bone-conducted vibration (BCV) is a small and generally acceptable method for enhancing the sense of movement in VR. However, its effects on vection have not been extensively studied. Here, we conducted two experiments to investigate the effect of BCV on the vection, which generates an upward sensation under the hypothesis that BCV stimulation to the mastoid processes causes noise in the vestibular system and enhances visually-induced self-motion perception. The experiments focused on the effects of BCV stimuli of different frequencies on the vection experience. The results suggested that 500 Hz BCV was more effective as noise to the vestibular system than other frequency BCVs and improved self-motion sensation. Background: Falls and related injuries are critical issues in several disease states, as well as aging, especially when interactions between vestibular and visual sensory inputs are involved. Slow support surface tilt (0.6 deg/s) followed by subjective postural horizontal (SPH) assessments have been proposed as a viable method for assessing otolith contributions to balance control. Previous assessments of perceived body alignment to vertical, including subjective visual vertical, have suggested that visual inputs are weighted more when vestibular information is near the threshold and less reliable during slow body tilt. To date, no studies have examined the influence of visual stimuli on slow roll-tilt postural responses and the SPH. Therefore, this study investigated how dynamic visual cues, in the form of circular vection (CV), influence postural responses and the perception of the horizontal during and after support surface tilt. Methods: Ten healthy young adults (6 female, mean age 23) wore a head-mounted display while standing on a tilting platform. Participants were asked to remain upright for 30 s, during which (1) the visual scene rotated, inducing roll CV clockwise (CW) or counter-clockwise (CCW) at 60°/s; (2) the platform only (PO) rotated in roll to test SPH (0.6°/s, 2°, CW or CCW); (3) a combination of both; or (4) neither occurred. During SPH trials, participants used a hand-held device to reset the position of the platform to 0.8°/s to their perceived SPH. The angular motion of body segments was measured using pairs of light-emitting diodes mounted on the head, trunk and pelvis. Segment motion, prior to platform motion, was compared to that at peak body motion induced by platform motion and when SPH had been set. Results: When the support surface was tilted 2°, peak upper body tilt significantly increased for congruent CV and platform tilt and decreased at the pelvis for incongruent CV when compared to PO, leading to significant differences across body segments for congruent and incongruent conditions (p ≤ 0.008). During PO, participants' mean SPH deviated from horizontal by 0.2°. The pelvis deviated 0.2°, the trunk 0.3°, and the head 0.5° in the direction of initial platform rotation. When platform tilt and CV directions were congruent or incongruent, only head tilt at SPH reset under congruent conditions was significantly different from the PO condition (1.7° vs. 0.5°). Conclusions: Roll CV has a significant effect on phasic body responses and a less significant effect on tonic body responses to lateral tilt. The SPH of the support surface was not altered by CV. Responses during tilt demonstrated enhanced reactions for congruent and reduced reactions for incongruent CV, both different from responses to CV alone. Tonic body displacements associated with SPH were changed less than those during tilt and were only slightly larger than displacements for CV alone. This study supports the hypothesis of weighted multisensory integration during dynamic postural tasks being highly dependent on the direction of visual cues during tilt and less dependent on tonic SPH offsets. • We conducted a systematic literature review of motion sickness inducers. • We identified eight categories of motion sickness inducers in vehicles. • A meta-analysis was conducted to assess the influence of motion cues. • Research gaps and future research directions have been pointed out. With the development of intelligent cabins and the popularity of smart devices, motion sickness has become an increasing concern. A number of theories have been proposed to explain the cause of motion sickness in vehicles. However, because of the diversity of the dynamical characteristics, road conditions, and in-vehicle human–machine interaction designs, the influence of the inducers on motion sickness in vehicles has not yet been fully quantified. Thus, in this paper, we aim to review and summarize the influential factors of motion sickness in road vehicles through a systematic review. In total, we identified 57 studies related to influential factors of motion sickness in vehicles, of which, 27 were further included for meta-analysis. In total, we identified eight categories of motion sickness inducers in vehicles, including the type of eye view, non-driving-related task availability, existence of artificial motion cues, head dynamic movement, vehicle dynamics, internal layout of vehicle, individual differences, and others. Most inducers had consistent effects on inducing motion sickness; however, inconsistent results have also been observed in vehicle dynamics, head dynamic movement, eye view, individual difference, and artificial motion cues (i.e., cues regarding the motion states of the ego-vehicle provided through in-vehicle auditory, tactile, or visual interfaces). Additional meta -analysis was conducted for motion cues. It was found that only natural present motion cues (i.e., cues regarding relative movement between the ego-vehicle and the environment through the windshield or side windows) and non-visual artificial anticipatory motion cues (i.e., auditory or tactile artificial motion cues regarding the future motion of ego-vehicle) were effective in alleviating motion sickness. We propose a unique, minimal assumption, approach based on variance analyses (compared with standard approaches) to investigate genetic influence on individual differences on the functional connectivity of the brain using 65 monozygotic and 65 dizygotic healthy young adult twin pairs' low‐frequency oscillation resting state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data from the Human Connectome Project. Overall, we found high number of genetically‐influenced functional (GIF) connections involving posterior to posterior brain regions (occipital/temporal/parietal) implicated in low‐level processes such as vision, perception, motion, categorization, dorsal/ventral stream visuospatial, and long‐term memory processes, as well as high number across midline brain regions (cingulate) implicated in attentional processes, and emotional responses to pain. We found low number of GIF connections involving anterior to anterior/posterior brain regions (frontofrontal > frontoparietal, frontotemporal, frontooccipital) implicated in high‐level processes such as working memory, reasoning, emotional judgment, language, and action planning. We found very low number of GIF connections involving subcortical/noncortical networks such as basal ganglia, thalamus, brainstem, and cerebellum. In terms of sex‐specific individual differences, individual differences in males were more genetically influenced while individual differences in females were more environmentally influenced in terms of the interplay of interactions of Task positive networks (brain regions involved in various task‐oriented processes and attending to and interacting with environment), extended Default Mode Network (a central brain hub for various processes such as internal monitoring, rumination, and evaluation of self and others), primary sensorimotor systems (vision, audition, somatosensory, and motor systems), and subcortical/noncortical networks. There were >8.5‐19.1 times more GIF connections in males than females. These preliminary (young adult cohort‐specific) findings suggest that individual differences in the resting state brain may be more genetically influenced in males and more environmentally influenced in females; furthermore, standard approaches may suggest that it is more substantially nonadditive genetics, rather than additive genetics, which contribute to the differences in sex‐specific individual differences based on this young adult (male and female) specific cohort. Finally, considering the preliminary cohort‐specific results, based on standard approaches, environmental influences on individual differences may be substantially greater than that of genetics, for either sex, frontally and brain‐wide. Deaf individuals may report difficulties in social interactions. However, whether these difficulties depend on deafness affecting social brain circuits is controversial. Here, we report the first meta‐analysis comparing brain activations of hearing and (prelingually) deaf individuals during social perception. Our findings showed that deafness does not impact on the functional mechanisms supporting social perception. Indeed, both deaf and hearing control participants recruited regions of the action observation network during performance of different social tasks employing visual stimuli, and including biological motion perception, face identification, action observation, viewing, identification and memory for signs and lip reading. Moreover, we found increased recruitment of the superior‐middle temporal cortex in deaf individuals compared with hearing participants, suggesting a preserved and augmented function during social communication based on signs and lip movements. Overall, our meta‐analysis suggests that social difficulties experienced by deaf individuals are unlikely to be associated with brain alterations but may rather depend on non‐supportive environments. Static depiction of motion, particularly lines trailing behind a mover, has long been of interest in the psychology literature. Empirical research has demonstrated that these "motion lines" benefited motion comprehension in static images by disambiguating the direction of movement. Yet, there is no consensus on how those lines derive their meaning. In this article, we review three accounts suggesting different interpretations of what motion lines represent. While a perceptual account considers motion lines originating from motion streaks in the primary visual cortex, metaphorical and lexical accounts propose them as graphical conventions that should be learned—either through resemblance to sensory experiences (e.g., natural path marks) or directly being mapped to a conceptual category of paths. To contrast these three accounts, we integrate empirical research on motion lines and their understanding. Overall, developmental, proficiency, and cross‐cultural variances indicate that the understanding of motion lines is neither innate nor universal, thus providing less support for lines having a purely perceptual origin. Rather, we argue the empirical findings suggest that motion lines are not iconic depictions of visual percepts but are graphical conventions indexing conceptual path information, which need to be learned and encoded in a visual lexicon.
