Purpose: The treatment with a cochlear implant (CI) is the gold standard in therapy of patients with profound hearing loss or deafness. Successful hearing rehabilitation with a CI is a complex, multi-stage process. In medicine, "Clinical Practice Guidelines" (CPG) are widely accepted for the standardization of such processes. These are supplemented by medical registries in which data regarding the treatment can be collected and evaluated. The aim of this paper is to identify currently existing CI-related CPGs and registries in Europe. Methods: Between 01/2021 and 06/2021, 42 countries on the European continent, including the United Kingdom, Russia and Turkey, were screened using an internet search (search engine: Google) and a key word search in the Pubmed database. Search terms were the respective country name combined with the following terms: "Cochlear Implant", "CI", "Cochlear implant clinical practice guideline", "CI Guideline", "Cochlear Implant Registry", "CI Registry", "Ear nose throat society". The internet search was conducted in English as well as in the corresponding national language. The objective was to identify a CI-related CPG or registry. Results: A CPG was found in 16 of 42 (38%) countries. In terms of population, this accounts for 645 million out of 838 million people (77%). A registry existed in 4 of the 42 (10%) countries assessed. This corresponds to 102 million out of 838 million (12%) people. In total, 4 out of 42 countries (10%) had both a CPG and a registry. Conclusion: Our work shows numerous efforts in Europe to standardize CI care at the national level. While most people in Europe already live in countries with a CPG, this is not the case for CI registries. European-wide consensus on CPGs or registries does not yet exist. World areas subject to drought are expected to increase under conditions of climate change. The purpose of this study is to clarify the response of grass species that can grow and produce under water stress. Therefore leaf photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence and pigment content response to water stress were studied in two varieties of the C4 grass Eragrostis curvula. Two-year-old plants of cv Ermelo and Consol were grown in plastic pots. Drought stress was imposed by withholding irrigation for 15 days and then rewatering for 5 days. During drought relative water content (RWC) decreased 65% in cv Ermelo, while lower reductions of RWC were observed in cv Consol. During the experiment in cv Ermelo increasing drought stress severity caused large decreases in photosynthetic rates, maximal PSII photochemical efficiency (FV/FM) and leaf pigment content. Cv Consol showed small variations in these parameters. Compared to cv Consol, after 15 days of drought, effective PSII quantum yield (ΦII) was significantly lower in cv Ermelo. Reductions of ΦII were related to significant reductions of open PSII energy capture efficiency (F′V/F′M). Photosynthetic response to increasing PPFD levels and to internal CO2 concentration (Ci) were reduced by drought in cv Ermelo. Compared to well-watered control plants and to cv Consol, drought stressed plants of cv Ermelo showed also reductions of the initial slope of photosynthetic response to Ci and in the photosynthetic rate measured at saturating Ci. Moreover stomatal conductance (g) of both cvs decreased during drought. However, g was lower in drought stressed plants of cv Consol than in cv Ermelo. Water stress caused large reductions in leaf chlorophyll and carotenoid content in cv Ermelo, and small reductions in cv Consol. In drought-sensitive cv Ermelo water stress reduced the capabilities to down regulate PSII functionality through thermal energy dissipation. Results suggest that drought resistance of cv Consol, can be attributed to a higher water use efficiency. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Weed Research 50, 388–401. We reviewed studies aimed at understanding functional relationships between weeds and arthropods in agroecosystems as influenced by biodiversity at different scales, with the main goal of highlighting gaps in knowledge, research methods and approaches. We first addressed: (i) the regulation of arthropod communities by weed diversity at genetic, species and habitat levels, (ii) the regulation of weed communities by arthropods through seed predation and dispersal and (iii) below-ground weed-insect interactions. We then focussed on methodologies to study weed–arthropod interactions in agricultural landscapes and discuss techniques potentially available for data analysis and the importance of joint weed–arthropod trend detection. Lastly, we discuss the implications of research findings for biodiversity conservation policies (agri-environmental schemes) and suggest some priorities for future work. Results showed that to date research has largely ignored weed–arthropod interactions in agricultural landscapes. No information is available on the role of weed genetic diversity as driver of weed–arthropod interactions, whereas studies on effects of species and habitat diversity often lack a functional perspective and/or a spatial component. Also, information on how management of the wider agricultural biotope might express positive weed–arthropod functional interactions is scarce. Another area worth being explored is the relationship between weed-leaf/root herbivores and beneficial arthropods. Tools for spatial data analysis might be useful for elucidating weed–arthropod interactions in agricultural landscapes, but some methodological aspects, e.g. the definition of the most appropriate experimental design and sampling scale/frequency, must be refined. New studies on weed–arthropod interactions should encompass an explicit spatial component; this knowledge is particularly important for improving IPM/IWM systems and designing more targeted agri-environmental schemes. Abstract: It is widely accepted that our climate is changing due to the increasing atmospheric concentrations of the ‘greenhouse gases’, and these changes may exercise strong impacts on different economic sectors. In particular for agricultural systems, such a change may have significant impacts on crop yield, cattle breeding and related management practices. Accordingly, the economic viability of agricultural production systems in future scenarios is a main concern especially for policy-making purposes. Up until now, the impact of climate change on agriculture has focused on change in crop yield, whereas a ‘holistic’ approach, considering both benefits (in terms of direct economic income) and detrimental environmental impacts of agricultural practices (soil loss, nitrogen leaching, water balance) has not been considered. On these premises, the objective of the present article was to assess agricultural sustainability on a farm level in Tuscany (central Italy) under the climate change regime, considering both conventional and organic farming systems (CFS and OFS, respectively). In particular, an ecological–economic optimisation model was run for both the present and future scenarios to perform an integrated assessment of sustainability of CFS and OFS on the case-study farm. Diffusive sampling has been used to study the spatial distribution of SO2, NO2, NOx, NH3 and BTX (benzene, toluene and xylenes) near an oil refinery located in Falconara, Italy, over the period from March to October 2001. Three different categories of sampling sites (roadside, residential and background) were studied. In total, 56 sites were monitored. The results were evaluated on the basis of the limit values found in the European Directives. The results of the defined study indicate that the measured concentrations were substantially lower than the ambient air quality standard with the maximum concentrations being generally found much closer to emission sources. The monitoring method described here can be used to assess integrated concentration levels over long periods of time and to identify pollution “hotspots” where concentrations are likely to be consistently high. Identification of these hotspots may help to assess air quality and to implement proper action plans, especially in locations where industrial and urban pollution coexist. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plants of Boea hygroscopica F. Muell were subjected to dehydration for 25 days until the relative water content was 23%. The rate of water loss was very slow during the first 12 days of dehydration while it dramatically increased during the last 3 days of the treatment. On day 12 of dehydration total glutathione content was reduced to 24% of the control level and was mainly present in the oxidized form. At that time an oxidation of the sulfhydryl groups of soluble proteins was observed. A protection of glutathione against oxidation of the sulfhydryl groups of soluble proteins was established only after 22 days of desiccation, at the same time as glutathione began to accumulate. During the whole desiccation period enzyme activities related to glutathione utilization and regeneration and the activity of NADP+-dependent glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (EC 1.2.1.12), which contains essential sulfhydryl groups, were maintained. The results of the present experiment suggest that during dehydration of Boea hygroscopica glutathione has, above all, a primary role in the protection of the sulfhydryl groups of the thylakoid proteins, which were maintained in the reduced form during the whole dehydration period.
