1. Global Occurrence and Chemical Impact of Stratospheric Blue Jets Modeled With WACCM4

Abstract

In this work we present the first parameterizations of the global occurrence rate and chemical influence of Blue Jets, a type of Transient Luminous Event (TLE) taking place in the stratospheric region above thunderclouds. These parameterizations are directly coupled with five different lightning parameterizations implemented in the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM4). We have obtained a maximum Blue Jet global occurrence rate of about 0.9 BJ per minute. The geographical occurrence of Blue Jets is closely related to the chosen lightning parameterization. Some previously developed local chemical models of Blue Jets predicted an important influence onto the stratospheric concentration of N$_2$O, NO$_x$ and O$_3$. We have used these results together with our global implementations of Blue Jets in WACCM4 to estimate their global chemical influence in the atmosphere. According to our results, Blue Jets can inject about 3.8 Tg N$_2$O-N yr$^{-1}$ and 0.07 Tg NO-N yr$^{-1}$ near the stratosphere, where N$_2$O-N and NO-N stand for the mass of nitrogen atoms in N$_2$O and NO molecules, respectively. These production rates of N$_2$O and NO$_x$ could have a direct impact on, for example, the acidity of rainwater or the greenhouse effect. We have found that Blue Jets could also slightly contribute to the depletion of stratospheric ozone. In particular, we have estimated that the maximum difference in the concentration of O$_3$ at 30 km of altitude between simulations with and without Blue Jets can be about -5 \% in Equatorial and Polar regions.

Abstract

In this work, we develop two spectroscopic diagnostic methods to derive the peak reduced electric field in Transient Luminous Events (TLEs) from their optical signals. These methods could be used to analyze the optical signature of TLEs reported by spacecraft such as ASIM (ESA) and the future TARANIS (CNES). As a first validation of these methods, we apply them to the predicted (synthetic) optical signatures of halos and elves, two type of TLEs, obtained from electrodynamical models. This procedure allows us to compare the inferred value of the peak reduced electric field with the value computed by halo and elve models. Afterward, we apply both methods to the analysis of optical signatures of elves and halos reported by GLIMS (JAXA) and ISUAL (NSPO) spacecraft, respectively. We conclude that the best emission ratios to estimate the maximum reduced electric field in halos and elves are the ratio of the Second Positive System (SPS) of N$_2$ to First Negative System (FNS) of N$_2^+$, the First Positive System (FPS) of N$_2$ to FNS of N$_2^+$ and the Lyman-Birge-Hopfield (LBH) band of N$_2$ to FNS of N$_2^+$. In the case of reduced electric fields below 150~Td, we found that the ratio of the SPS of N$_2$ to FPS of N$_2$ can also be used to reasonably estimate the value of the field. Finally, we show that the reported optical signals from elves can be treated following an inversion method in order to estimate some of the characteristics of the parent lightning.

Abstract

The spatial non-uniformity of the electric field in air discharges, such as streamers, can influence the accuracy of spectroscopic diagnostic methods and hence the estimation of the peak electric field. In this work, we use a self-consistent streamer discharge model to investigate the spatial non-uniformity in streamer heads and streamer glows. We focus our analysis on air discharges at atmospheric pressure and at the low pressure of the mesosphere. This approach is useful to investigate the spatial non-uniformity of laboratory discharges as well as sprite streamers and blue jet streamers, two types of Transient Luminous Event (TLE) taking place above thunderclouds. This characterization of the spatial non-uniformity of the electric field in air discharges allows us to develop two different spectroscopic diagnostic methods to estimate the peak electric field in cold plasmas. The commonly employed method to derive the peak electric field in streamer heads underestimates the electric field by about 40-50~\% as a consequence of the high spatial non-uniformity of the electric field. Our diagnostic methods reduce this underestimation to about 10-20\%. However, our methods are less accurate than previous methods for streamer glows, where the electric field is uniformly distributed in space. Finally, we apply our diagnostic methods to the measured optical signals in the Second Positive System of $N_2$ and the First Negative System of $N_2^+$ of sprites recorded by Armstrong et al. (1998) during the SPRITE's 95 and 96 campaigns.

Abstract

Halos and elves are Transient Luminous Events (TLEs) produced in the lower ionosphere as a consequence of lightning-driven electromagnetic fields. These events can influence the upper-atmospheric chemistry and produce optical emissions. We have developed different two-dimensional self-consistent models that couple electrodynamical equations with a chemical scheme to simulate halos and elves produced by vertical cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning discharges, Compact Intra-cloud Discharges (CIDs) and Energetic In-cloud Pulses (EIPs). The optical emissions from radiative relaxation of excited states of molecular and atomic nitrogen and oxygen have been calculated. We have upgraded previous local models of halos and elves to calculate for the first time the vibrationally detailed optical spectra of elves triggered by CIDs and EIPs. According to our results, the optical spectra of elves do not depend on the type of parent lightning discharge. Finally, we have quantified the local chemical impact in the upper atmosphere of single halos and elves. In the case of the halo, we follow the cascade of chemical reactions triggered by the lightning-produced electric field during a long-time simulation of up to one second. We obtain a production rate of NO molecules by single halos and elves of 10$^{16}$ and 10$^{14}$ molecules/J, respectively. The results of these local models have been used to estimate the global production of NO by halos and elves in the upper atmopshere at $\sim10^{-7}$ Tg~N/y. This global chemical impact of halos and elves is seven orders of magnitude below the production of NO in the troposphere by lightning discharges.

5. Whistler wave propagation through the ionosphere of Venus

Abstract

We investigate the attenuation of whistler waves generated by hypotetical venusian lightning occurring at the altitude of the cloud layer under different ionospheric conditions. We use the Stanford Full Wave Method (FWM) for stratified media of \cite{Lehtinen2008/JGR} to model wave propagation through the ionosphere of Venus. This method calculates the electromagnetic field created by an arbitrary source in a plane-stratified medium (i.e. uniform in the horizontal direction). We see that the existence of holes in electronic densities and the magnetic field configuration caused by solar wind play an important role in the propagation of electromagnetic waves through the venusian ionosphere.

6. Three-dimensional modeling of lightning-induced electromagnetic pulses on Venus, Jupiter and Saturn

Abstract

While lightning activity in Venus is still controversial, its existence in Jupiter and Saturn was first detected by the Voyager missions and later on confirmed by Cassini and New Horizons optical recordings in the case of Jupiter, and recently by Cassini on Saturn in 2009. Based on a recently developed 3D model we investigate the influence of lightning-emitted electromagnetic pulses (EMP) on the upper atmosphere of Venus, Saturn and Jupiter. We explore how different lightning properties such as total energy released and orientation (vertical, horizontal, oblique) can produce mesospheric transient optical emissions of different shapes, sizes and intensities. Moreover, we show that the relatively strong background magnetic field of Saturn can enhance the lightning-induced quasi-electrostatic and inductive electric field components above 1000 km of altitude producing stronger transient optical emissions that could be detected from orbital probes.

7. Mesospheric optical signatures of possible lightning on Venus

Abstract

A self-consistent two-dimensional model is proposed to account for the transient mesospheric nighttime optical emissions associated to possible intra-cloud (IC) lightning occurring in the Venusian troposphere. The model calculates the mesospheric (between 75 km and 120 km in altitude) quasielestrostatic electric field and electron density produced in response to IC lightning activity located beween 40 km and 65 km in the Venusian cloud layer. The optical signatures and the densities of perturbed excited atomic and molecular neutral and ionic species in the mesosphere of Venus are also calcutated using a basic kinetic scheme. The calculations were performed for different IC lightning discharge properties [Krasnopolsky (1980), Cosmic. Res.]. We found that the calculated electric fields in the mesosphere of Venus are above breakdown values and that, consequently, visible transient glows (similar to terrestrial Halos produced by lightning) right above the parent IC lightning are predicted. The transient optical emissions result from radiative de-excitation of excited electronic states of N$_2$ (in the ultraviolet, visible and near infrared ranges) and of O($^{1}$S) and of O($^{1}$D) in, respectively, the green (557 nm) and red (630 nm) wavelengths. The predicted transient lightning induced glows from O($^{1}$S) can reach an intensity higher than 167 R and, consequently, be above the detection threshold of the Lightning and Airglow Camera (LAC) instrument aboard the japanese Akatsuki probe orbiting Venus since Dec 2015. However, according to our model, successful observations of transient lightning-induced optical glows could only be possible for sufficiently close (300 km or maximum 1000 km) distances.

Abstract

We investigate the effect of halo activity on the electrostatic field measured at ground level. We use electrostatic arguments as well as self-consistent simulations to show that, due to the screening charge in the ionosphere, the distant electrostatic field created by the uncompensated charge in a thundercloud decays exponentially rather than as the third power of the distance. Furthermore, significative ionization around the lower edge of the ionosphere slightly reduces the electrostatic field at ground level. We conclude that halos do not extend the range of detectability of lightning-induced electrostatic fields.

9. Modeling streamer discharges as advancing imperfect conductors

Abstract

A major obstacle for the understanding of long electrical discharges is the complex dynamics of streamer coronas, formed by many thin conducting filaments. Building macroscopic models for these filaments is one approach to attain a deeper knowledge of the discharge corona. Here we present a one-dimensional, macroscopic model of a propagating streamer channel. We represent the streamer as an advancing finite-conductivity channel with a surface charge density at its boundary. This charge evolves self-consistently due to the electric current that flows through the streamer body and within a thin layer at its surface. We couple this electrodynamic evolution with a field-dependent set of chemical reactions that determine the internal channel conductivity. With this one-dimensional model we investigate how key properties of a streamer affect the channel's evolution. The ultimate objective of our model is to construct realistic models of streamer coronas in order to understand better the physics of long electrical discharges.

Abstract

Detailed observations of the solar system planets reveal a wide variety of local atmospheric conditions. Astronomical observations have revealed a variety of extrasolar planets none of which resembles any of the solar system planets in full. Instead, the most massive amongst the extrasolar planets, the gas giants, appear very similar to the class of (young) Brown Dwarfs which are amongst the oldest objects in the universe. Despite of this diversity, solar system planets, extrasolar planets and Brown Dwarfs have broadly similar global temperatures between 300K and 2500K. In consequence, clouds of different chemical species form in their atmospheres. While the details of these clouds differ, the fundamental physical processes are the same. Further to this, all these objects were observed to produce radio and X-ray emission. While both kinds of radiation are well studied on Earth and to a lesser extent on the solar system planets, the occurrence of emission that potentially originate from accelerated electrons on Brown Dwarfs, extrasolar planets and protoplanetary disks is not well understood yet. Abstract

Single- and multi-pulse blue corona discharges are frequently observed in thunderstorm clouds. Although we know they often correlate with Narrow Bipolar Events (NBEs) in Very Low Frequency/Low Frequency (VLF/LF) radio signals, their physics is not well understood. Here, we report a detailed analysis of different types of blue corona discharges observed by the Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor (ASIM) during an overpass of a thundercloud cell nearby Malaysia. Both single- and multi-pulse blue corona discharges were associated with positive NBEs at the top of the cloud, reaching about 18 km altitude. We find that the primary pulses of multi-pulse discharges have weaker current moments than the single-pulse discharges, suggesting that the multi-pulse discharges either have shorter vertical channels or have weaker currents than the single-pulse discharges. The subsequent pulse trains of the multi-pulse discharges delayed some milliseconds are likely from horizontally oriented electrical discharges, but some NBEs, correlated with both single-and multi-pulse discharges, include small-amplitude oscillations within a few microseconds inside their waveforms, which are unresolved in the optical observation and yet to be understood. Furthermore, by jointly analyzing the optical and radio observations, we estimate the photon free mean path at the cloud top to be ∼6 m.

18. How to Engage Medical Students in Chronobiology: An Example on Autorhythmometry

Abstract

This contribution describes a new laboratory experience that improves medical students' learning of chronobiology by introducing them to basic chronobiology concepts as well as to methods and statistical analysis tools specific for circadian rhythms. We designed an autorhythmometry laboratory session where students simultaneously played the role of researchers and experimental subjects. During this session, which lasted 24 h, students recorded their own arterial pressure, heart rate, oral temperature, forced expiratory flow, glucose tolerance, muscular strength, reaction time, and sensorimotor coordination at regular intervals and also took the Horne and Ostberg test, after which they analyzed their own data. Furthermore, to gather information from subjects under normal sleep and eating schedules, some students acquired data at home. To guide and help students with their work, a dedicated web page was implemented with scientific references, cosinor analysis software, and other valuable information. All these "raw" data were combined into a single database that students could use to evaluate whatever aspect of the data they seemed fit. A number of suggestions were offered to them as guidance. Students were then instructed to write a scientific article on the subject they had chosen. The experience was highly rewarding for both instructors and students alike. In view of the high level of absenteeism in Spanish universities and the fact that 93% of the students attended the exam and 95% of these passed, the experience was considered a great success. Abstract

Edoxaban is used for venous thromboembolism (VTE) treatment. Real-life data are lacking about its use in long-term therapy. We aimed to assess the efficacy and the safety of edoxaban for long-term VTE treatment in a real-life setting. Patients with VTE included in the Registro Informatizado Enfermedad TromboEmbólica (RIETE) registry, receiving edoxaban 60 or 30 mg daily were prospectively followed up to validate the benefit of using different dosages. The main outcome was the composite of VTE recurrences or major bleeding in patients with or without criteria for dose reduction. Multivariable analysis to identify predictors for the composite outcome was performed. From October 2015 to November 2019, 562 patients received edoxaban for long-term therapy. Most (94%) of the 416 patients not meeting criteria for dose reduction received 60 mg daily, and 92 patients meeting criteria (63%) received 30 mg daily. During treatment, two patients developed recurrent VTE, six had major bleeding and nine died (2 from fatal bleeding). Among patients not meeting criteria for dose reduction, those receiving 30 mg daily had a higher rate of the composite event (hazard ratio (HR) 8.37; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.12–42.4) and a significant higher mortality rate (HR 31.1; 95% CI 4.63–262) than those receiving 60 mg. Among patients meeting criteria for dose reduction, those receiving 60 mg daily had no events, and a nonsignificantly higher mortality rate (HR 5.04; 95% CI 0.54–133) than those receiving 30 mg daily. In conclusion, edoxaban seems to be effective and safe for long-term VTE treatment in real life. Criteria for dose reduction should be reformulated., No funding was received for this work

Abstract

In the current era of patient empowerment and precision medicine, access to timely information is critical to decision-making. Unfortunately, we currently lack patient-specific, real-time data about clinical presentation, risk of thrombotic or hemorrhagic events, key risk factors, and adverse outcomes in patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE). Accordingly, the Registro Informatizado Enfermedad TromboEmbólica (RIETE) investigators developed a tool to provide an open-source, real-time graphic representation of VTE-related data derived from over 90 000 patients with confirmed VTE. This information is intended to facilitate discussion in the informed decision-making process. The current article describes the aims, rationale, methods, and ongoing and future efforts of the real-time VTE infographics developed by the RIETE registry collaborators.

Abstract

Background Patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE) secondary to transient risk factors may develop VTE recurrences after discontinuing anticoagulation. Identifying at‐risk patients could help to guide the duration of therapy. Methods We used the RIETE database to assess the prognostic value of d‐dimer testing after discontinuing anticoagulation to identify patients at increased risk for recurrences. Transient risk factors were classified as major (postoperative) or minor (pregnancy, oestrogen use, immobilization or recent travel). Results In December 2018, 1655 VTE patients with transient risk factors (major 460, minor 1195) underwent d‐dimer measurements after discontinuing anticoagulation. Amongst patients with major risk factors, the recurrence rate was 5.74 (95% CI: 3.19–9.57) events per 100 patient‐years in those with raised d‐dimer levels and 2.68 (95% CI: 1.45–4.56) in those with normal levels. Amongst patients with minor risk factors, the rates were 7.79 (95% CI: 5.71–10.4) and 3.34 (95% CI: 2.39–4.53), respectively. Patients with major risk factors and raised d‐dimer levels (n = 171) had a nonsignificantly higher rate of recurrences (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.14; 95% CI: 0.96–4.79) than those with normal levels. Patients with minor risk factors and raised d‐dimer levels (n = 382) had a higher rate of recurrences (HR: 2.34; 95% CI: 1.51–3.63) than those with normal levels. On multivariate analysis, raised d‐dimers (HR: 1.74; 95% CI: 1.09–2.77) were associated with an increased risk for recurrences in patients with minor risk factors, not in those with major risk factors. Conclusions Patients with raised d‐dimer levels after discontinuing anticoagulant therapy for VTE provoked by a minor transient risk factor were at an increased risk for recurrences. But although the correlation integral is defined for any choice of delay time, the BDS statistic assumes delay time is one. As different studies have shown, an adequate choice of delay time is important in order to determine the dynamical properties of a system from an observed time series, specially when the data sets are small and there is some noise. Abstract

Knee arthroscopy is the most common orthopedic procedure worldwide. While incidence of post-arthroscopy venous thromboembolic events (VTE) is low, treatment patterns and patient outcomes have not been described. Patients from the "Registro Informatizado Enfermedad TromboEmbolica" who had confirmed post-arthroscopy VTE were compared to patients with provoked, post bone-fracture, and to patients with unprovoked VTE. Baseline characteristics, presenting signs and symptoms, treatment and outcomes including recurrent VTE, bleeds or death were compared. Abstract

BackgroundCurrent guidelines suggest treating cancer patients with incidental pulmonary embolism (PE) similarly to those with clinically suspected and confirmed PE. However, the natural history of these presentations has not been thoroughly compared.MethodsWe used the data from the RIETE (Registro Informatizado de Enfermedad TromboEmbólica) registry to compare the 3-month outcomes in patients with active cancer and incidental PE versus those with clinically suspected and confirmed PE. The primary outcome was 90-day all-cause mortality. Secondary outcomes were PE-related mortality, symptomatic PE recurrences and major bleeding.ResultsFrom July 2012 to January 2019, 946 cancer patients with incidental asymptomatic PE and 2274 with clinically suspected and confirmed PE were enrolled. Most patients (95% versus 90%) received low-molecular-weight heparin therapy. During the first 90 days, 598 patients died, including 42 from PE. Patients with incidental PE had a lower all-cause mortality rate than those with suspected and confirmed PE (11% versus 22%; OR 0.43, 95% CI 0.34–0.54). Results were consistent for PE-related mortality (0.3% versus 1.7%; OR 0.18, 95% CI 0.06–0.59). Multivariable analysis confirmed that patients with incidental PE were at lower risk of death (adjusted OR 0.43, 95% CI 0.34–0.56). Overall, 29 (0.9%) patients developed symptomatic PE recurrences, and 122 (3.8%) had major bleeding. There were no significant differences in PE recurrences (OR 0.62, 95% CI 0.25–1.54) or major bleeding (OR 0.78, 95% CI 0.51–1.18).ConclusionsCancer patients with incidental PE had a lower mortality rate than those with clinically suspected and confirmed PE. Further studies are required to validate these findings, and to explore optimal management strategies in these patients.

In order to simplify other laparoscopic techniques, a new standing laparoscopic technique for partial closure of inguinal canal (PCIC) has been developed. This technique uses a new anchoring device and can be performed without advanced laparoscopic skills. Abstract

RB1 mutation detection has greatly improved the clinical management of retinoblastoma and provides critical information to predict the risk of inheriting the disease. We screened for RB1 gene sequence alterations in both peripheral blood and tumor specimens from a total of 48 Mexican retinoblastoma patients using an SSCP-based screening approach followed by sequencing. Overall, 21 (43.8%) cases were bilateral and 27 (56.2%) were unilateral. Interestingly, 51.8% of unilateral patients developed the tumor before age 1 year and 10 of wich (71.4%) were diagnosed before the age of 6 months. Thirteen different oncogenic mutations were detected in 14/48 (29.2%) patients, 9 of which were germline (64.3%). Six of these mutations are novel (IVS3-1G>T, 125X, 389X, 610X, 750X and -149G>T). The most frequent types of mutation were frameshift and nonsense (30.8% each). Moreover, 5 intronic variants were identified, two of which are novel (g.41908 C/A and g.161976del6T). Loss of heterozygosity of the RB1 gene as assessed by intron1/BamHI and intron17/XbaI intragenic markers was 50.0% (18 of 36 informative cases), being higher in tumors with known mutations (76.9% vs 34.8%). This low mutation detection rate and the earlier age at diagnosis in unilateral retinoblastoma cases suggest that other RB1 inactivating mechanisms could be present in the retinoblastoma development. In this study, mutation analysis was not helpful to distinguish sporadic and hereditary retinoblastoma, so, other approaches are needed to improve the molecular diagnosis of retinoblastoma and supports further investigations of Mexican retinoblastoma patients. Abstract

Abstract The synchronizing stimulus, its transduction site, and the afferent pathways responsible for feeding entrainment remain unknown. In fish, the role of the diet in the development of feeding anticipatory activity (FAA) is not well understood and fundamental questions on the mechanisms of feeding entrainment, such as the meal characteristics required to develop FAA, remain unexplored. To test the entraining properties of daily meals with different sizes and energy densities, activity rhythms were studied after a 12-h shift of the feeding cycle in individual goldfish under constant light. In the 1st experiment, the energy content of a control diet (16.7 kJ/g) was diluted by replacing 50% (8.3 kJ/g) or 90% (1.7 kJ/g) of the diet with cellulose. However, the number of days required to stabilize FAA after the shift did not differ statistically between diets. In the 2nd experiment, meal size was modified by reducing the daily feeding ration to 0.5% and 0.1% b.wt.d[sup -1]. In this case, differences in the entraining properties of the two feeding rations appeared because goldfish fed at 0.1% b.wt.d[sup -1] resynchronized faster than those fed at 0.5% b.wt.d[sup -1]. These results revealed that the dilution of the dietary energy up to 1.7 kJ/g had no significant effect on the entraining properties of the feeding-entrainable oscillator (FEO), whereas the reduction of the meal size to 0.1% b.wt.d[sup -1] provoked a faster resynchronization after shifting the daily meal cycle. Taken together, these results suggest that gut distension may be involved in feeding entrainment, as a reduction in meal size but not in the amount of dietary energy supplied significantly shortened the time required for resynchronization and highlighted the different synchronizing properties of meal size and energy density as zeitgebers for the FEO. Abstract

Abstract Most animals when presented with food on a periodic basis develop feeding anticipatory activity (FAA). The objective of the present study was to investigate the synchronization of activity rhythms to light and feeding in single goldfish given a single daily meal and exposed to different light regimes. In the 1st experiment, the group of fish fed at the end of the day showed a longer FAA (228 +/- 27 min) than the group fed 1 h after lights-on (97 +/- 31 min). In the 2nd experiment, goldfish under conflicting zeitgebers, LD (T = 26) and feeding (T = 24) cycles, initially synchronized to the light cycle although feeding time gradually assumed greater importance as the experiment progressed. In the 3rd experiment, after altering the feeding cycles by advancing or delaying feeding time by 4 h in LD 0.25:23.75, most goldfish resynchronized to the feeding stimulus and developed FAA. In conclusion, the authors' results revealed that FAA in goldfish is driven by an endogenous timing system that is entrainable by periodic feeding and influenced by the light regime. Abstract

A reaction system was developed for the production of d-amino acids from d,l-5-monosubstituted hydantoins with a very slow rate of spontaneous racemization. For this purpose the d-hydantoinase and d-carbamoylase from Agrobacterium radiobacter NRRL B11291 were cloned in separate plasmids and expressed in Escherichia coli. The third enzyme, hydantoin racemase, was cloned from Agrobacterium tumefaciens C58. The hydantoin racemase amino acid sequence was significantly similar to those previously described. A reaction system consisting of recombinant Escherichia coli whole cell biocatalysts containing separately expressed d-hydantoinase, d-carbamoylase, and hydantoin recemase showed high substrate specificity and was effective toward both aliphatic and aromatic d,l-5-monosubstituted hydantoins. After optimizing reaction conditions (pH 8 and 50 °C), 100% conversion of d,l-5-(2-methylthioethyl)-hydantoin (15 mM) into d-methionine was obtained in 30 min.
