Muscular dystrophies are a group of genetic disorders that lead to a gradual weakening of muscles, resulting in increased disability over time. Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) is one such condition and is inherited through an X-linked recessive pattern, primarily affecting males. Symptoms of BMD typically begin in the teenage years or late twenties. Initial signs may include muscle cramps during exercise and reduced stamina. Over time, there is a gradual loss of muscle bulk in the hips, pelvis, thighs, and shoulders, often leading to a tendency to walk on toes. In Ayurveda, the factors contributing to this disease are believed to be an aggravation of Vata (one of the three doshas), depletion of Mamsa (muscle tissue), and Meda (fat tissue), impaired digestive fire, and blockage of functional channels (Srotorodha). The present case involved a 15-year-old male with weakness in both lower limbs for 4 years, a decrease in muscle mass around the pelvic and thigh area for 3 years, and an increase in calf muscle size for 3 years. The patient exhibited pseudohypertrophy in both calf muscles and positive Gower's sign, along with a positive family history and elevated creatine phosphokinase levels, leading to a diagnosis of BMD. The treatment approach incorporated Panchakarma therapies and internal Ayurvedic formulations in line with the management of Sarvang Vata disorder. The treatment was administered in four sessions, with a 3-month gap between each therapy session. After a year of treatment, there was not only a halt in the progression of the disease but also a notable improvement in lower limb strength, which increased from 4 to 4+. In addition, there was an increase in proximal muscle mass, from 12.5 inches to 13 inches, and a reduction in calf muscle size and tightness. This promising outcome suggests the potential for managing the disease using Ayurvedic principles and therapies.

Nadi Pariksha is a significant, rather symbolic term for Ayurveda. Ancient Ayurvedic literature has prominently stated its importance in the judgment of Tridoshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) which are the base of ailment diagnosis and prediction. The knowledge about Nadi Pariksha is uncovered in various ancient Ayurvedic literature like Ravansamhita, Bhavprakash, Nadivigyan by Kanad, Sharangdhar, and Yogratnakar. The various Nadi parameters are indicative of the diagnosis of diseases. These techniques were used as popular diagnostic tools in Indian culture from ancient days. Still, nowadays, these are not being used explicitly due to the lack of expertise, so it is necessary to establish their results once gained so that they can be used along with technical aspects in today's era. Ayurveda believes that all the elements of the Universe are present in any human body in minute, proportionate quantity, and the Nadi represents these elements, that is, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha (VPK). To facilitate the Nadi Pariksha using appropriate sensors may help the Ayurveda practitioners diagnose Prakriti and predict some diseases, making the Nadi Pariksha more reliable and faster.This review paper lists, 2 books and 67 research papers, mostly from countries like India, China, Japan, Korea, etc., from various reputed databases. The review primarily concentrates on six research themes: sensors and devices used for Nadi signal acquisition, signal pre-processing methods, feature extraction methods, feature selection approaches, classification practices, diseases diagnosed, and results attained. The paper also reviews the challenges in implementing the automated Nadi Pariksha with technological aid, which is a necessity of this period and is a very vibrant research arena. Yet significant work remains to be done, like bridging the gaps between technical and commercial development, and the procedure standardization is also required.

Vrikshayurveda (An ancient Indian science of plant life) includes complete plant-life knowledge compendium of plant physiology, horticulture, pathology, and treatment. Though translation of the manuscript is available, the knowledge contained in the translation is not easily accessible to ordinary farmers who want answers to their specific problems or researchers who want references for specific topics without having to read the complete book. This research work proposes to convert the knowledge in the manuscript form to an expert system form which can provide the solutions to specific queries from the farmers and agriculture stakeholders. A rule based expert system using backward chaining Expert System is developed. The database in this design has ten diseases. The evaluation is done for all the dataset. The results are compatible with the expert's diagnosis. Thus the users can get comprehensive information on Vriksha-Ayurvedic expertise on all elements of disease and plant protection.

Pulse diagnosis, also known as Nadi Pariksha, is one of the various diagnostic modalities used in Ayurveda. Nadi Pariksha is a way of determining the underlying cause of a sickness that needs extensive knowledge of the Tridosha signals (i.e. Vata, Pitta and Kapha), as well as the peculiarities of each pulse signal and their relationship to each dominant signal. A Nadi expert can gain a sense of the patient's health status by using this approach and then provide treatment based on that information. In the present day, the health monitoring of people has become an essential requirement. A system which keeps track of the patient's health and continuously captures pulse signals will be helpful. In this work a healthcare monitoring system that uses sensors was developed, and the analysis of Vata, Pitta and Kapha for various patients is discussed, as well as the uploading of the same data to a self-made IoT cloud. The mean values of Vata, Pita and Kapha were compared for different age groups; we found that it is more significant for the age group of 41‒50.

Aims: The aim was to study the macro- and microscopic characters, physiochemical and high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) profile of Vata (F. benghalensis Linn.) Jata (aerial roots). Materials and Methods: Experiments were performed on authenticated plant materials, following standard procedures. Macroscopic and microscopic pharmacognostical characters of aerial roots and histochemical studies were noted. Results: Externally, the aerial root is gray and rough along with transverse rows of lenticels. Inner part of the aerial root is reddishbrown fibrous nature in bark portion. The powder microscopy study revealed the presence of fragment of simple fiber without lumen, stone cells with tannin, simple starch grain with hilum, compound starch grain, fiber with denim contents, latex contents, tannin contents rhomboidal crystal 2, rhomboidal crystal 3, group of stone cell with tannin, and fiber passing through medullary rays. Discussion: Transverse section of aerial root showed outer interesting exodermis followed by cork and cortex. Cortex region abundantly enriched by calcium oxalate crystal and tannin content are the diagnostic characters. Conclusion: Results of pharmacognostical and physiochemical analysis including HPTLC on aerial roots will help in further standardization.

Wrist pulse diagnosis is the most primitive and apparent way to know about the human body condition for the diagnosis of disease. Ayurveda, an ancient Indian science, introduces wrist pulse diagnosis in the name of 'Nadi'. Due to the lack of expertise and standardization, the knowledge of Nadi is limited to very few Ayurvedic practitioners. An automated wrist pulse reading instrument can overcome this problem and help in non-invasive diagnosis using a wrist pulse based on Ayurveda. The primary objective of the research is to develop instrumentation to digitize the three pulse patterns viz. Vata (V), Pitta (P) and Kapha (K). Based on the signals acquired, the nature of the body (Prakriti) is identified and categorized into different classes. Wrist pulses are acquired using three thin film flexible piezoelectric sensors and processed using a signal conditioning circuit. Signals are quantized using data acquisition module and processed. The studies carried out in the present work shows substantial to moderate (based on the number of classes considered) agreement in the pulse based classifications done by expert Ayurvedic physician and the developed instrument. Cohen's kappa of 0.719 and 0.454 are obtained as inter-rater reliability between traditional and instrumental readings on wrist pulse taken on basic level (VPK) and sub-levels (VP, VK & PK). Prakriti classification is also carried out based on the standard questioners. A Cohen's kappa of 0.587 and 0.476 is obtained between Prakriti and two different pulse reading data set with basic level of classification viz. instrument and traditional method. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a complicated multifactorial illness involving hereditary and external environmental variables. The symptoms typically appear gradually over a number of years without realizing it. This viewpoint is further supported by the Ayurvedic constitution concept (Prakriti). Prakriti explains the biological variability that is observed in different individuals. This study was conducted a retrospective investigation to examine if there was a link between type 2 diabetes and an individual's constitution based on anthropometric and biochemical characteristics. Physical and mental characteristics and anthropometric and biochemical markers were used to determine reported cases' prevailing Dosha Prakriti (constitution). Based on biochemical and anthropometric data, significant differences in Prakriti were found between the case (T2DM patients) and control (person without diabetes) groups. The incidence of numerous secondary problems linked with T2DM patients was also evaluated according to their Prakriti types, which revealed a positive relationship. The three primary contributing parameters, such as waist-hip ratio, postprandial blood sugar, and serum creatinine, were correctly classified all person with or without diabetes subjects to 90.6% of the time, whereas the constitution-wise study classified person with diabetes and without diabetes individuals of Pitta and Kapha Prakriti to 94.3% and 90%, respectively. A discriminant function was created to predict a person with diabetes and without diabetes based on these three contributing factors. The primary contributing biochemical parameters discovered by Prakriti in the current study could be used as a biochemical disease diagnostic for predicting type 2 diabetes susceptibility. Introduction: An ancient form of traditional medicine, Ayurveda, is based upon the various forms of prakriti and has drawn scientific interest from medical professionals. Important scientific applications of discerning prakriti (body constitution) lie in predicting disease susceptibility of an individual, and deciding disease prognosis and treatment of choice for it. This calls for inventing a universally applicable, standardized tool for the analysis of Prakriti, which would be helpful to integrate Ayurvedic fundamentals with allopathic medicine. Objectives: To assess and compare cardiovascular autonomic function status in normal healthy individuals of various Ayurveda Prakritis. Methods: This cross sectional study was carried out on 79 randomly selected normalhealthy subjects in the age group of 18-40 years with dual constitutional prakriti types (Dvandvaja Prakriti). Various cardiovascular autonomic function tests were assessed in all these subjects. Results: Out of all the cardiovascular reflex tests, mean values for heart rate response to postural change (30:15 ratio) as well as heart rate response to deep breathing were found to be the highest in kapha dominant prakriti, though not statistically significant. Both these parameters denote parasympathetic activity. Whereas, the mean value for heart rate response to Valsalva maneuver, which indicates both sympathetic and parasympathetic activity, was found to be the highest in vata prakriti though not statistically significant. Of all the tests done to evaluate the heart rate variability, the mean value for normalized high frequency (HFnu) which signifies parasympathetic modulation was again found to be the highest in kapha dominant prakriti individuals, though not statistically significant. Polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is most common endocrine disorder in female. PCOS most common symptoms are irregular menstrual cycle, very heavy bleeding during periods, weight gain or excessive hair growth on face, chest, and lower abdomen. PCOS was firstly designated in 1935 by Stein and Laventhal. This review based on different medicinal systems like Allopathy, Ayurveda, and Homeopathy with case study of medicinal system. In the rapidly changing and modernizing era, human population is becoming vulnerable to many disorders related with altered lifestyle and food habits. Vatarakta is one such metabolic disorder. It is disease caused due to margavarana of aggravated Vata by vitiated Rakta or morbid Kapha and Medas. Etiological factors of Vatarakta are responsible for aggravation of Vata dosha and Rakta dushti. It also has rasayana, pain relieving and anti inflammatory properties which renders it quite effective for those suffering from the disease. The presentation of Vatarakta along with its etiopathogenesis is quite similar to gouty arthritis in modern medicine. Patoladi kwath is a combination of tridosha shamak, Raktasodhak (blood purifier) and also Vatashamak drugs. This decoction helps in Vatarakta to alleviate the features of aggravated doshas and remove blockage in srotas thereby causing Vayu shaman. The management of Vatarakta is a challenge as it is a disease of severe morbidity, chronicity and incurable to certain extent with associated complications . With certain lifestyle modifications alongwith pathya ahara(right diet) and certain Ayurvedic modalities it can be cured and prevented.

Background: Triphala, the Ayurvedic herbal formulation composed of Terminalia chebula Retz. (Combretaceae), Terminalia bellirica Roxb. (Combretaceae), and Phyllanthus emblica L. (Euphorbiaceae) fruits. It has been reported the cholesterol-lowering effect that the reduction of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase activity was proposed as a key mechanism of action. Since, triphala formulations in equal proportion (1:1:1) and different ratios of its three fruit constituents (vata, pitta, and kapha) have been prescribed by the traditional practitioners due to the patient's body conditions. The biological activities of each formulation are needed to evaluate. Objectives: The objective of the study was to investigate phytochemicals, HMG-CoA reductase inhibitory effect, and HMG-CoA reductase molecular modeling of triphala extracts. Materials and Methods: Four triphala extracts were prepared by decoction and determined the contents of gallic acid, ellagic acid, chebulagic acid, and chebulinic acid as markers using high-pressure liquid chromatography analysis. The in vitro HMG CoA reductase assay was performed based on ultraviolet spectrophotometry, and molecular modeling was simulated using Autodock 1.5.6 to characterize the binding energy, ligand efficacy, and H-bond interaction. Results: All extracts contained gallic acid and chebulagic acid in the high contents, whereas ellagic acid and chebulinic acid were found in a small amount. The enzyme assay revealed pitta extract (at 10 μg/mL) was the most potent enzyme inhibition of 58.4' ± 0.40' (P = 0.05). Moreover, the modeling results indicated that these four markers can interact the enzyme with different configurations and binding affinities. Conclusion: Pitta extract appeared to be a potent HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor. It was a potential natural product as an alternative treatment for hypercholesterolemia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ayurveda defines health as a state of physical, mental, intellectual and spiritual well-being. Nowadays, life has become so erratic that everybody is in hurry and is stressed. This life style has a direct impact on the health especially on the heart. Thus cardiovascular diseases pose an alarming threat to global health. Large number of herbs are mentioned in Ayurveda as Hrida i.e. beneficial for heart. In this study I have discussed about the herbs that are mentioned in Hridya Mahakashya (Group of cardio tonics drugs). Acharya charaka has mentioned the Hridya Mahakashaya in his classification .This is a group of ten drugs i. e. beneficial for heart. All ten drugs are Amla Rasa Pradhana (sour in taste) and rich source of vitamin c. Vitamin c is proved to be a potent antioxidant as well as a good stress buster. The aim of this article is putting forward the brief accounts and probable mode of action of these drugs mentioned in Hridya Mahakashaya.

The occurrence of multi-organ affecting Type 2 diabetes mellitus is increasing day by day that consequently becomes a serious threat to public health. According to Ayurveda, individual's basic constitution (Prakriti) describes its predisposition and prognosis to disease status and also the treatment for disease but no detailed studies carried out yet on diabetic individuals of three Prakriti groups on biochemical aspects. This study was conducted with twelve patients in each three Prakriti groups having Type 2 diabetes mellitus to determine the differences of some anthropometrical and biochemical parameters amongst them. Clinical profiling and various biochemical parameters of liver and kidney, lipid profiles and antioxidant enzymes were assayed. Significant differences were observed amongst the subjects belonging in different Prakriti groups. Differences in liver function enzymes and kidney function parameters and lipid profiles revealed that the subjects of Kapha and Pitta Prakriti were predominant groups. Glycosylated haemoglobin percentage was higher in Pitta Prakriti individuals. The screening process of the study indicated that diabetic individuals mostly belong to the Pitta and Kapha Prakriti groups of which Kapha Prakriti was more prone to hepatic and renal disorder and Pitta Prakriti was more susceptible towards cardiac disorder due to their diabetic complications. This paper explores brain patterns associated with the three categories of regulatory principles of the body, mind, and behavior in Ayurveda, called Vata, Pitta, and Kapha dosha. A growing body of research has reported patterns of blood chemistry, genetic expression, physiological states, and chronic diseases associated with each dosha type. Since metabolic and growth factors are controlled by the nervous system, each dosha type should be associated with patterns of functioning of six major areas of the nervous system: The prefrontal cortex, the reticular activating system, the autonomic nervous system, the enteric nervous system, the limbic system, and the hypothalamus. For instance, the prefrontal cortex, which includes the anterior cingulate, ventral medial, and the dorsal lateral cortices, would exhibit a high range of functioning in the Vata brain-type leading to the possibility of being easily overstimulated. The Vata brain-type performs activity quickly. Learns quickly and forgets quickly. Their fast mind gives them an edge in creative problem solving. The Pitta brain-type reacts strongly to all challenges leading to purposeful and resolute actions. They never give up and are very dynamic and goal oriented. The Kapha brain-type is slow and steady leading to methodical thinking and action. They prefer routine and needs stimulation to get going. A model of dosha brain-types could provide a physiological foundation to understand individual differences. This model could help individualize treatment modalities to address different mental and physical dysfunctions. It also could explain differences in behavior seen in clinical as well as in normal populations.

Background: Prakriti (body constitution) is an important concept of Ayurveda which is decided at the time of birth. It shows differences in physical, physiological and psychological characteristics of an individual. Variation in skin characteristics is found as per Prakriti. Aim: The aim of the present work was to study hydration of skin over volar forearm in people with different Prakriti with the help of skin diagnostic SD 27 instrument. Subjects and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted at Cosmetic Technology Department in unmarried healthy female students of (18–30 years). A total of 904 volunteers were screened, of which 621 volunteers were further examined for Deha Prakriti for screening of single Dosha dominant Prakriti. 58 Vata, 70 Pitta and 61 Kapha dominant Prakriti were eligible for further study, but on actual day of skin examination, 50 volunteers in each group completed the study. Skin hydration was measured by skin diagnostic SD 27 instrument. Results: It was found that maximum people with Vata (92%) and Pitta dominantPrakriti (70%) had less hydration while (48%) Kapha dominant Prakriti volunteers had normal to dehydrated skin. Chi-square test was used for analysis. The Chi-square value is 45.9 and P= 0.0001, which is highly significant. Conclusion: The skin of Vata and Pitta dominant Prakriti had less hydration while hydration was well maintained in Kapha dominant Prakriti than that of Vata and Pitta Prakriti people.
