Abstract

This study provides an analysis of atmospheric neutrino oscillations at the ESSnuSB far detector facility. The prospects of the two cylindrical Water Cherenkov detectors with a total fiducial mass of 540 kt are investigated over 10 years of data taking in the standard three-flavor oscillation scenario. We present the confidence intervals for the determination of mass ordering, $\theta_{23}$ octant as well as for the precisions on $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ and $|\Delta m_{31}^2|$. It is shown that mass ordering can be resolved by $3\sigma$ CL ($5\sigma$ CL) after 4 years (10 years) regardless of the true neutrino mass ordering. Correspondingly, the wrong $\theta_{23}$ octant could be excluded by $3\sigma$ CL after 4 years (8 years) in the case where the true neutrino mass ordering is normal ordering (inverted ordering). Abstract

Neutrino oscillation experiments provide a unique window in exploring several new physics scenarios beyond the standard three flavour. One such scenario is quantum decoherence in neutrino oscillation which tends to destroy the interference pattern of neutrinos reaching the far detector from the source. In this work, we study the decoherence in neutrino oscillation in the context of the ESSnuSB experiment. We consider the energy-independent decoherence parameter and derive the analytical expressions for P$_{\mu e}$ and P$_{\mu \mu}$ probabilities in vacuum. We have computed the capability of ESSnuSB to put bounds on the decoherence parameters namely, $\Gamma_{21}$ and $\Gamma_{32}$ and found that the constraints on $\Gamma_{21}$ are competitive compared to the DUNE bounds and better than the most stringent LBL ones from MINOS/MINOS+. We have also investigated the impact of decoherence on the ESSnuSB measurement of the Dirac CP phase $\delta_{\rm CP}$ and concluded that it remains robust in the presence of new physics., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, Version accepted for publication in JHEP

This study presents a novel approach to assessing food security risks at the national level, employing a probabilistic scenario-based framework that integrates both Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) and Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP). This innovative method allows each scenario, encompassing socio-economic and climate factors, to be treated as a model capable of generating diverse trajectories. This approach offers a more dynamic understanding of food security risks under varying future conditions. Abstract

In this paper we study non-standard interactions mediated by a scalar field (SNSI) in the context of ESSnuSB experiment. In particular we study the capability of ESSnuSB to put bounds on the SNSI parameters and also study the impact of SNSI in the measurement of the leptonic CP phase $\delta_{\rm CP}$. Existence of SNSI modifies the neutrino mass matrix and this modification can be expressed in terms of three diagonal real parameters ($\eta_{ee}$, $\eta_{\mu\mu}$ and $\eta_{\tau\tau}$) and three off-diagonal complex parameters ($\eta_{e \mu}$, $\eta_{e\tau}$ and $\eta_{\mu\tau}$). Our study shows that the upper bounds on the parameters $\eta_{\mu\mu}$, $\eta_{\tau\tau}$ and $\eta_{\mu\tau}$ depend upon how $\Delta m^2_{31}$ is minimized in the theory. However, this is not the case when one tries to measure the impact of SNSI on $\delta_{\rm CP}$. Further, we show that the CP sensitivity of ESSnuSB can be completely lost for certain values of $\eta_{ee}$ and $\eta_{\mu\tau}$ for which the appearance channel probability becomes independent of $\delta_{\rm CP}$., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, Version accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

Serious infections (SIs) remain one of the most significant comorbidities in patients with inflammatory arthritides including psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Apart from methotrexate (MTX) and biologics such as tumor necrosis factor (TNFi), interleukin-12/23 (IL-12/23i), and IL-17 inhibitors (IL-17i), traditionally used for the treatment of PsA, recently biologics such as IL-23i and targeted synthetic agents like JAK inhibitors (JAKi) have been introduced in the daily clinical practice for the treatment of this disease. Although overall the incidence of SIs in patients with PsA treated with these agents is lower compared to patients with rheumatoid arthritis, still a number of unresolved issues regarding their safety remain. Current evidence is reassuring regarding the safety profile of conventional synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, such as MTX. The increased risk for reactivation of latent infections, such as tuberculosis and hepatitis B virus (HBV) with the use of TNFi, is well described; nevertheless, it is significantly ameliorated with the appropriate screening and prophylaxis. Regarding IL-12/23i and IL-17i, there are no significant safety signals, except from an increased incidence of usually mild Candida infections with the latter class. Newer biologics such as IL-23i and targeted synthetic agents like JAKi have been recently introduced in the daily clinical practice for the treatment of this disease. While IL-23i has not been shown to increase the risk for common or opportunistic infections, a well-established association of JAKi with herpes zoster warrants the attention of rheumatologists. In this narrative review, we summarize the infectious complications of available treatment options by drug class in patients with PsA.

Abstract

ESSnuSB is a design study for an experiment to measure the CP violation in the leptonic sector at the second neutrino oscillation maximum using a neutrino beam driven by the uniquely powerful ESS linear accelerator. The reduced impact of systematic errors on sensitivity at the second maximum allows for a very precise measurement of the CP violating parameter. This review describes the fundamental advantages of measurement at the 2nd maximum, the necessary upgrades to the ESS linac in order to produce a neutrino beam, the near and far detector complexes, the expected physics reach of the proposed ESSnuSB experiment, concluding with the near future developments aimed at the project realization., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures; Final version after review by the Universe journal

Abstract

Renal vein thrombosis (RVT) is a relatively uncommon condition that is most frequently observed in individuals with nephrotic syndrome. While rare, pyelonephritis (PN) may serve as a predisposing factor for secondary RVT. In such cases, one should consider the possibility of RVT when patients fail to respond to appropriate antibiotic treatment. Typically, these patients require additional anticoagulation therapy for a duration of 3 to 6 months, with a generally favorable prognosis. In this report, we present the case of a 74-year-old female who developed RVT due to Klebsiella pneumoniae PN. Additionally, we reviewed 11 cases of PN complicated by RVT, which were documented in the PubMed database over a span of 40 years, emphasizing key elements in diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Lastly, we elaborated upon the role of thrombo-inflammation, especially in the context of sepsis.

Abstract

In this research, a generalized machine learning (ML) framework is proposed to estimate the fatigue life of epoxy polymers and additively manufactured AlSi10Mg alloy materials, leveraging their failure surface void characteristics. An extreme gradient boosting algorithm-based ML framework encompassing Synthetic Minority Over-sampling TEchnique (SMOTE), categorical data encoding, and external loop cross-validation is developed to evaluate the fatigue life across materials. The influence of different training strategies based on materials, input features, encoding method, and data standardization on the model performance is explored. Additionally, the importance of anti-data-leakage and anti-overfitting measures over the ML model performance is addressed. The result shows that the data-leakage-free, external loop cross-validated model can estimate the fatigue life of selective epoxy polymers and metal alloys with an average R2 of 0.71 ± 0.06 using a mere 12 to 27 experimental data points per material category. Whereas the model trained with data-leakage and overfitting results in high R2 of 0.9.

Objective To estimate real-life European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR)/European Renal Association (ERA)-European Dialysis and Transplantation Association (EDTA) response rates and predictors for no response in patients with lupus nephritis (LN) managed with conventional immunosuppressive therapies.Methods Ambidirectional cohort study of patients with new-onset LN (period 2014–to date). Response rates in the first year were calculated, and all treatment modifications were recorded. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed to assess determinants of failure to respond at 12 months.Results 140 patients were included (81.4% women, median (IQR) age at LN diagnosis 38 (22) years). Abstract Background Adrenomedullin (AM) is a multifunctional peptide which under basal conditions mainly regulates vasodilation and maintains vascular integrity but is also implicated in the pathogenesis of several malignancies, including multiple myeloma (MM). It has been shown that adrenomedullin is expressed by human myeloma cell lines and that it enhances MM‐driven angiogenesis. However, the clinical impact of AM remains unknown. Materials and Methods On that basis, we enrolled 32 newly diagnosed multiple myeloma patients (NDMM) and studied the potential of AM as a prognostic biomarker. Results We report that elevated levels of AM trend with suboptimal treatment response and inferior survival of NDMM patients.

Abstract

Abstract The sirtuin family of proteins is categorised as class III histone deacetylases that play complex and important roles in ageing-related pathological conditions such as cancer and the deregulation of metabolism. There are seven members in humans, divided into four classes, and evolutionarily conserved orthologues can be found in most forms of life, including both eukaryotes and prokaryotes. The highly conserved catalytic core domain composed of a large oxidised nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+)-binding Rossmann fold subunit suggests that these proteins belong to a family of nutrient-sensing regulators. Along with their function in regulating cellular metabolism in response to stressful conditions, they are implicated in modifying a wide variety of substrates; this increases the complexity of unravelling the interplay of sirtuins and their partners. Over the past few years, all of these new findings have attracted the interest of researchers exploring potential therapeutic implications related to the function of sirtuins. It remains to be elucidated whether, indeed, sirtuins can serve as molecular targets for the treatment of human illnesses.

Abstract

This conceptual design report provides a detailed account of the European Spallation Source neutrino Super Beam (ESS$\nu$SB) feasibility study. This facility has been proposed after the measurements reported in 2012 of a relatively large value of the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$, which raised the possibility of observing potential CP violation in the leptonic sector with conventional neutrino beams. The measured value of $\theta_{13}$ also privileges the $2^{nd}$ oscillation maximum for the discovery of CP violation instead of the more typically studied $1^{st}$ maximum. The sensitivity at this $2^{nd}$ oscillation maximum is about three times higher than at the $1^{st}$ one, which implies a reduced influence of systematic errors. Working at the $2^{nd}$ oscillation maximum requires a very intense neutrino beam with an appropriate energy. The world's most intense pulsed spallation neutron source, the European Spallation Source (ESS), will have a proton linac operating at 5\,MW power, 2\,GeV kinetic energy and 14~Hz repetition rate (3~ms pulse duration, 4\% duty cycle) for neutron production. In this design study it is proposed to double the repetition rate and compress the beam pulses to the level of microseconds in order to provide an additional 5~MW proton beam for neutrino production. The physics performance has been evaluated for such a neutrino super beam, in conjunction with a megaton-scale underground water Cherenkov neutrino detector installed at a distance of 360--550\,km from ESS. The ESS proton linac upgrades, the accumulator ring required for proton-pulse compression, the target station design and optimisation, the near and far detector complexes, and the physics potential of the facility are all described in this report. The ESS linac will be operational by 2025, at which point the implementation of upgrades for the neutrino facility could begin., Comment: 216 pages

Abstract

The spontaneous muonium to antimuonium conversion is one of the interesting charged lepton flavor violation processes. It serves as a clear indication of new physics and plays an important role in constraining the parameter space beyond Standard Model. MACE is a proposed experiment to probe such a phenomenon and expected to enhance the sensitivity to the conversion probability by more than two orders of magnitude from the current best upper constraint obtained by the PSI experiment two decades ago. In this Snowmass 2021 white paper, we summarise the Conceptual Design of the European Spallation Source neutrino Super Beam (ESSvSB) experiment and its synergies with the possible future muon based facilities, e.g. a Low Energy nuSTORM and the Muon Collider. The ESSvSB will benefit from the high power, 5 MW, of the European Spallation Source (ESS) LINAC in Lund-Sweden to produce the world most intense neutrino beam, enabling measurements to be made at the second oscillation maximum. Assuming a ten-year exposure, physics simulations show that the CP-invariance violation can be established with a significance of 5 sigma over more than 70% of all values of delta CP and with an error in the measurement of the delta CP angle of less than 8 degree for all values of delta CP. However, several technological and physics challenges must be further studied before achieving a final Technical Design. Measuring at the 2nd oscillation maximum necessitates a very intense neutrino beam with the appropriate energy. For this, the ESS proton beam LINAC, which is designed to produce the world's most intense neutron beam, will need to be upgraded to 10 MW power, 2.5 GeV energy and 28 Hz beam pulse repetition rate. An accumulator ring will be required for the compression of the ESS LINAC beam pulse from 2.86 ms to 1.3 mus. A high power target station facility will be needed to produce a well-focused intense (super) mu-neutrino beam. The physics performance of that neutrino Super Beam in conjunction with a megaton underground Water Cherenkov neutrino far detector installed at a distance of either 360 km or 540 km from the ESS, the baseline, has been evaluated., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

Abstract Background Understanding why some triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients respond poorly to existing therapies while others respond well remains a challenge. This study aims to understand the potential underlying mechanisms distinguishing early-stage TNBC tumors that respond to clinical intervention from non-responders, as well as to identify clinically viable therapeutic strategies, specifically for TNBC patients who may not benefit from existing therapies. Methods We conducted retrospective bioinformatics analysis of historical gene expression datasets to identify a group of genes whose expression levels in early-stage tumors predict poor clinical outcomes in TNBC. In vitro small-molecule screening, genetic manipulation, and drug treatment in syngeneic mouse models of TNBC were utilized to investigate potential therapeutic strategies and elucidate mechanisms of drug action. Results Our bioinformatics analysis reveals a robust association between increased expression of immunosuppressive cytokine S100A8/A9 in early-stage tumors and subsequent disease progression in TNBC. A targeted small-molecule screen identifies PIM kinase inhibitors as capable of decreasing S100A8/A9 expression in multiple cell types, including TNBC and immunosuppressive myeloid cells. Combining PIM inhibition and immune checkpoint blockade induces significant antitumor responses, especially in otherwise resistant S100A8/A9-high PD-1/PD-L1-positive tumors. Notably, serum S100A8/A9 levels mirror those of tumor S100A8/A9 in a syngeneic mouse model of TNBC. Conclusions Our data propose S100A8/A9 as a potential predictive and pharmacodynamic biomarker in clinical trials evaluating combination therapy targeting PIM and immune checkpoints in TNBC. This work encourages the development of S100A8/A9-based liquid biopsy tests for treatment guidance.

Abstract

This article describes the setup and performance of the near and far detectors in the Double Chooz experiment. The electron antineutrinos of the Chooz nuclear power plant were measured in two identically designed detectors with different average baselines of about 400 m and 1050 m from the two reactor cores. Over many years of data taking the neutrino signals were extracted from interactions in the detectors with the goal of measuring a fundamental parameter in the context of neutrino oscillation, the mixing angle {\theta}13. The central part of the Double Chooz detectors was a main detector comprising four cylindrical volumes filled with organic liquids. From the inside towards the outside there were volumes containing gadolinium-loaded scintillator, gadolinium-free scintillator, a buffer oil and, optically separated, another liquid scintillator acting as veto system. Above this main detector an additional outer veto system using plastic scintillator strips was installed. The technologies developed in Double Chooz were inspiration for several other antineutrino detectors in the field. The detector design allowed implementation of efficient background rejection techniques including use of pulse shape information provided by the data acquisition system. 49. Cumulative incidence and risk of infection in patients with rheumatoid arthritis treated with janus kinase inhibitors: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Abstract

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who receive immunosuppressive medications have a heightened risk of infection. The goal of our study was to calculate the pooled cumulative incidence and risk of infection in patients with RA treated with Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKi). The PubMed and EMBASE databases were queried for randomized controlled trials comparing patients with RA treated with JAKi (upadacitinib, baricitinib, tofacitinib, peficitinib, or filgotinib), defined as the treatment group, compared with control subjects, defined as participants receiving placebo or treatment regimen that was similar to that of participants in the treatment group, with the exception of JAKi. The primary study endpoint was the relative risk (RR) of any-grade and severe infection. The secondary endpoints were RR and cumulative incidence of opportunistic infections, herpes zoster, and pneumonia. The Stata v17 software was used for all data analysis. Results showed that treatment with baricitinib was associated with an increased risk of any-grade (RR 1.34; 95% CI: 1.19-1.52) and opportunistic (RR 2.69; 95% CI: 1.22-5.94) infection, whereas treatment with filgotinib (RR 1.21; 95% CI: 1.05-1.39), peficitinib (RR 1.40; 95% CI: 1.05-1.86) and upadacitinib (RR 1.30; 95% CI: 1.09-1.56) was associated with increased risk of any-grade infection only. Analysis based on type of infection showed a pooled cumulative incidence of 32.44% for any-grade infections, 2.02% for severe infections, 1.74% for opportunistic infections, 1.56% for herpes zoster, and 0.49% for pneumonia in patients treated with any JAKi during the follow-up period. Treatment with specific JAKi in patients with RA is associated with an increased risk of any-grade and opportunistic infections but not severe infection. Close clinical monitoring of patients with RA treated with JAKi is required to establish the long-term infection risk profile of these agents.
