- Abstract
The Amazon region abounds in precious mineral resources including gold, copper, iron, and coltan. Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) poses a severe risk in this area due to considerable mercury release into the surrounding ecosystems. Nonetheless, the impact of mercury on both the overall microbiota and the microbial populations involved in mercury transformation is not well understood. In this study we evaluated microbial diversity in samples of soil, sediment and water potentially associated with mercury contamination in two localities (Taraira and Tarapacá) in the Colombian Amazon Forest. To this end, we characterized the bacterial community structure and mercury-related functions in samples from sites with a chronic history of mercury contamination which today have different levels of total mercury content. We also determined mercury bioavailability and mobility in the samples with the highest THg and MeHg levels (up to 43.34 and 0.049 mg kg, respectively, in Taraira). Our analysis of mercury speciation showed that the immobile form of mercury predominated in soils and sediments, probably rendering it unavailable to microorganisms. Despite its long-term presence, mercury did not appear to alter the microbial community structure or composition, which was primarily shaped by environmental and physicochemical factors. However, an increase in the relative abundance of merA genes was detected in polluted sediments from Taraira. Several Hg-responsive taxa in soil and sediments were detected in sites with high levels of THg, including members of the Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes and Chloroflexi phyla. The results suggest that mercury contamination at the two locations sampled may select mercury-adapted bacteria carrying the merA gene that could be used in bioremediation processes for the region.

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We study Chern-Simons black holes in d-dimensions and we calculate analytically the quasinormal modes of fermionic perturbations. Also, we consider as background the five-dimensional Chern-Simons black hole with torsion and the BTZ black hole with torsion. We have found that the quasinormal modes depend on the highest power of curvature present in the Chern-Simons theory, such as occurs for the quasinormal modes of scalar perturbations. We also show that the effect of the torsion is to modify the real part of the quasinormal frequencies, which modify the oscillation frequency of the field for the five dimensional case. However, for the BTZ black hole with torsion, the effect is to modify the imaginary part of these frequencies, that is, the relaxation time for the decay of the black hole perturbation. The imaginary part of the quasinormal frequencies is negative which guaranties the stability of these black holes under fermionic field perturbations., Comment: Version accepted for publication in PRD

The inclusive J/ψ nuclear modification factor (RAA) in Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV has been measured by ALICE as a function of centrality in the e+e− decay channel at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.8) and as a function of centrality, transverse momentum and rapidity in the μ+μ− decay channel at forward-rapidity (2.5 < y < 4). The J/ψ yields measured in Pb–Pb are suppressed compared to those in pp collisions scaled by the number of binary collisions. The RAA integrated over a centrality range corresponding to 90% of the inelastic Pb–Pb cross section is 0.72±0.06(stat.)±0.10(syst.) at mid-rapidity and 0.58 ± 0.01(stat.) ± 0.09(syst.) at forward-rapidity. At low transverse momentum, significantly larger values of RAA are measured at forward-rapidity compared to measurements at lower energy. These features suggest that a contribution to the J/ψ yield originates from charm quark (re)combination in the deconfined partonic medium.

Particle ratios ,ALICE ,High pT ,Nuclear modification factor ,Identified particle production ,Particle ratio ,LHC ,Baryon anomaly - Abstract
Transverse momentum spectra of π±, K± and p(p ̄) up to pT = 20 GeV/c at mid-rapidity in pp, peripheral (60–80%) and central (0–5%) Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV have been measured using the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The proton-to-pion and the kaon-to-pion ratios both show a distinct peak at pT ≈ 3 GeV/c in central Pb–Pb collisions. Below the peak, pT < 3 GeV/c, both ratios are in good agreement with hydrodynamical calculations, suggesting that the peak itself is dominantly the result of radial flow rather than anomalous hadronization processes. For pT > 10 GeV/c particle ratios in pp and Pb–Pb collisions are in agreement and the nuclear modification factors for π±, K± and p(p ̄) indicate that, within the systematic and statistical uncertainties, the suppression is the same. This suggests that the chemical composition of leading particles from jets in the medium is similar to that of vacuum jets.

The effect of selective PAF antagonists on the in vivo production of IgE antibodies was investigated. The anti-ovalbumin IgE antibody content was estimated by passive cutaneous anaphylactic reaction (PCA) in the plasma of Balb/c mice 10 days after immunization with ovalbumin and alum. The PAF antagonists, BN 52021 (5 mg/kg, ip), BN 50730 (20 mg/kg, po), WEB 2086 (2 mg/kg, ip) and WEB 2170 (5 mg/kg, ip) were administered 1 h before immunization and twice a day for 8 days thereafter. The effect of the antagonists on the PAF-induced vasopermeability was also assayed. In the immunized mice the level of antiovalbumin IgE antibody, estimated by PCA titer, was 1/640. The treatment with the PAF antagonists did not change this level. At the concentrations employed, the antagonists BN 50730, WEB 2086 and WEB 2170 significantly reduced the PAF-induced vascular permeability. These results suggest that PAF does not seem to have a relevant effect on the production of IgE antibodies in vivo in the system used in the present study.

41. Antibiotic susceptibility patterns of community-acquired urinary tract infection isolates from female patients on the US(Texas)-Mexico border.

- Abstract
Monitoring antibiotic susceptibility pat-terns of uropathogens at a local level yields important information regarding emerging problems of antibiotic resistance and provides assistance in managing empirical therapy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the susceptibility of bacterial strains isolated from female patients with community-acquired urinary tract infections (UTIs) in a US-Mexico border city (El Paso, Tex). The study was conducted at a university affiliated community hospital that serves the city and surrounding areas. A retrospective case series from July 2000 through June 2001 identified a total of 880 patients with a positive urine culture and a colony count of >/=10[4] CFU/mL. There were 888 bacterial isolates collected from these 880 cultures. The predominant species was Escherichia coli, representing 71.3% of the isolates, followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (9.0%), Enterococcus spp. (5.0%), coagulase-negative staphylococci (2.8%), Citrobacter spp. (2.6%), Enterobacter spp. (2.3%), Proteus mirabilis (1.9%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (1.2%), Staphylococcus aureus (1.1%), other gram-negative spp. (1.1%), Klebsiella spp. (0.9%), Proteus spp. (0.5%), and other gram-positive spp. (0.3%). Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, which has been a first line empiric agent for urinary tract infections, showed relatively poor activity against E. coli isolates (73.5% susceptibility). However, alternative empiric drugs such as nitrofurantoin, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin showed good activity against E. coli (98.1%, 93.7% and 92.9% susceptibility, respectively). These findings indicate that continued surveillance at a local level is essential to maintaining the efficacy and safety of empirical therapy for UTIs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

2 Cl2 extract of the leaves of Marila pluricostata led to the isolation of 17 naturally occurring 4-phenylcoumarins, three of them, 5-hydroxy-8,8-dimethyl-4-phenyl-9,10-dihydro-8H-pyrano-[2,3-f]chromen-2-one (1 ), 5-hydroxy-8,8-dimethyl-4-phenyl-6-propionyl-9,10-dihydro-8H-pyrano-[2,3-f]chromen-2-one (2 ), and 5,7-dihydroxy-8-(3-methylbut-2-enyl)-4-phenylchromen-2-one (3 ), are new natural compounds; the remaining (4 −17 ) are known mammea-type coumarins. Their structures were established by spectroscopic means. All compounds were tested in cytotoxicity assays against the MCF-7, H-460, and SF-268 human cancer cell lines.- Published

- Abstract
The contamination of bodies of water by heavy metals represents not only a danger for the environment, but also for human health; because they do not have the capacity to biodegrade, accumulate in the environment and in the tissues of the living organisms that inhabit it. In order to minimize these impacts, Zinc adsorption (Zn) was studied in aqueous solutions using humic acids extracted from bituminous coal from the Cerrejon mine (Guajira). This investigation was divided into two phases: The extraction of Humic Acids and the adsorption study. In the first phase, an aqueous oxidation of coal samples with different particle sizes (125mm, 250mm, and 425mm) was performed, with hydrogen peroxide as the oxidizing agent, at a concentration of 30%. In the second phase Zn2+ removal using Humic Acids extracted from bituminous coals was studied in aqueous media as a function of pH, highest percentage of adsorption obtained was of 66.8% at a pH of 5.

Trypanosoma cruzi is a genetically heterogeneous group of organisms that cause Chagas disease. It has been long suspected that the clinical outcome of the disease and response to therapeutic agents are, at least in part, related to the genetic characteristics of the parasite. Herein, we sought to validate the significance of the genotype of T. cruzi isolates recovered from patients with different clinical forms of Chagas disease living in Argentina on their biological behaviour and susceptibility to drugs. Genotype identification of the newly established isolates confirmed the reported predominance of TcV, with a minor frequency of TcI. Epimastigote sensitivity assays demonstrated marked dissimilar responses to benznidazole, nifurtimox, pentamidine and dihydroartemisinin in vitro. Two TcV isolates exhibiting divergent response to benznidazole in epimastigote assays were further tested for the expression of anti-oxidant proteins. Benznidazole-resistant BOL-FC10A epimastigotes had decreased expression of Old Yellow Enzyme and cytosolic superoxide dismutase, and over-expression of mitochondrial superoxide dismutase and tryparedoxin- 1, compared to benznidazole-susceptible AR-SE23C parasites. Drug sensitivity assays on intracellular amastigotes and trypomastigotes reproduced the higher susceptibility of AR-SE23C over BOL-FC10A parasites to benznidazole observed in epimastigotes assays. However, the susceptibility/resistance profile of amastigotes and trypomastigotes to nifurtimox, pentamidine and dihydroartemisinin varied markedly with respect to that of epimastigotes. C3H/He mice infected with AR-SE23C trypomastigotes had higher levels of parasitemia and mortality rate during the acute phase of infection compared to mice infected with BOL-FC10A trypomastigotes. Treatment of infected mice with benznidazole or nifurtimox was efficient to reduce patent parasitemia induced by either isolate. Nevertheless, qPCR performed at 70 dpi revealed parasite DNA in the blood of mice infected with AR-SE23C but not in BOL-FC10A infected mice. These results demonstrate high level of intra-type diversity which may represent an important obstacle for the testing of chemotherapeutic agents. Fil: Quebrada Palacio, Luz Piedad.

- Abstract
Earth-abundant transition metal phosphide (TMP) nanomaterials have gained significant attention as potential replacements for Pt-based electrocatalysts in green energy applications, such as the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and overall water splitting. In particular, FeP nanostructures exhibit superior electrical conductivity and high stability. Moreover, their diverse composition and unique crystal structures position FeP nanomaterials as emerging candidates for HER electrocatalysts. However, the synthesis or fabrication method employed for FeP nanostructures can significantly affect their overall electrocatalytic properties. For example, the solution synthesis of pure-phase FeP nanostructures remains challenging due to the formation of multiple binary phases and undesirable agglomeration. In this work, we use a simple approach to synthesizing FeP nanobundles by reacting β-FeOOH (iron oxyhydroxide) with trioctylphosphine (TOP). FeP nanobundles were evaluated as HER electrocatalysts in both acidic and basic conditions, demonstrating good HER activity with overpotential values of 170 and 338 mV at a current density of -10 mA cm
-2 in acidic and alkaline solutions, respectively. Additionally, they exhibited low values of Tafel slopes in both acidic and alkaline environments. In acidic media with a pH of 0.45, the nanobundles showed no signs of deterioration for up to 15 h (-50 mA cm-2 ). In basic media with a pH of 13.69, the nanobundles remain stable for up to 8 h (-50 mA cm-2 ). These results demonstrate a simple and effective method for producing highly efficient earth-abundant and cost-effective TMP-based electrocatalysts, which could play a vital role in the hydrogen economy of the future.- Published

- Abstract
Mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) apoptosis is required for in vivo immunosuppression. However, the induction of apoptosis is heavily dependent on the recipient's immune system. In graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), patients who fail to respond to MSCs are in fact those whose immune cells are unable to induce MSC apoptosis ex vivo. The information is critical to explain why responses in clinical trials vary even though the same sources of MSC products are infused. More importantly, it highlights the need for an alternative MSC treatment for the nonresponders. By using a mouse model of ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic inflammation, we demonstrated that we could generate apoptotic MSCs (ApoMSCs) in vitro and use them to successfully reduce allergic airway inflammation. In order to address the logistics of their potential future clinical application, we have shown that ApoMSCs could be cryopreserved without impairing efficacy compared to freshly generated ApoMSCs. We have also highlighted that MSCs need to undergo complete apoptosis before cryopreservation to retain their immunosuppressive activity. The cryopreserved ApoMSCs could serve as a potential future off-the-shelf cellular product, in particular for patients who suffer from inflammatory conditions yet do not harbor the immune capacity to induce MSC apoptosis in vivo. Our data provide proof-of-concept that under laboratory conditions, ApoMSCs can be successfully frozen and thawed without affecting their anti-inflammatory activity, as tested in a murine model of allergic inflammation., (© The Author(s) 2024.
