The current major challenge to reconstruct the chronology of the Milky Way (MW) is the difficulty to derive precise stellar ages. CMD-fitting offers an alternative to individual age determinations to derive the star formation history (SFH). We present CMDft.Gaia and use it to analyse the CMD of the Gaia Catalogue of Nearby Stars (GCNS), which contains a census of the stars within 100 pc of the Sun. The result is an unprecedented detailed view of the evolution of the MW disk. The bulk of star formation started 11-10.5 Gyr ago at [Fe/H]~solar and continued with a slightly decreasing metallicity trend until 6 Gyr ago. Between 6-4 Gyr ago, a break in the age-metallicity distribution is observed, with 3 stellar populations with distinct metallicities (sub-solar, solar, and super-solar), possibly indicating some dramatic event in the Galaxy. Star formation resumed 4 Gyr ago with a bursty behaviour, metallicity near solar and higher average SFR. The derived metallicity distribution closely matches precise spectroscopic data, which also show stellar populations deviating from solar metallicity. Interestingly, our results reveal the presence of intermediate-age populations with both a metallicity typical of the thick disk and supersolar metallicity. Our many tests indicate that, with high precision Gaia photometric and distance data, CMDft.Gaia can achieve a precision ~10% and an accuracy better than 6% in the dating of even old stellar populations. The comparison with independent spectroscopic data shows that metallicity distributions are determined with high precision, without imposing a-priory metallicity information. This opens the door to obtaining detailed and robust information on the evolution of the stellar populations of the MW over cosmic time. Nowadays, methods and techniques of Machine Learning and Deep Learning are being used in various scientific areas. They help to automatize calculations without losing in quality. In this paper the applying of convolutional neural network was considered in frame of problems from statistical physics and computer simulation of magnetic films. In a frame of the first task, CNN was used to determine critical Curie point for Ising model on 2D square lattice. Obtained results were compared with classical Monte-Carlo methods and exact solution. Systems of various lattice sizes and the influence of the size effect on the results' accuracy were considered. Also, authors considered the classical two-dimensional Heisenberg model, a spin system with direct short-range exchange, and studied of its competition with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. A neural network was applied to the recognition of Spiral (Sp), Spiral-skyrmion (SpSk) Skyrmion (Sk), Skyrmion-ferromagnetic (SkF) and Ferromagnetic (FM) phases of the Heisenberg spin system with magnetic skyrmions. The development of an open and free RISC-V architecture is of great interest for a wide range of areas, including high-performance computing and numerical simulation in mathematics, physics, chemistry and other problem domains. In this paper, we discuss the possibilities of accelerating computations on available RISC-V processors by improving the vectorization of several computer vision and machine learning algorithms in the widely used OpenCV library. It is shown that improved vectorization speeds up computations on existing prototypes of RISC-V devices by tens of percent.

We present an N-body model for the barred Milky Way (MW) galaxy that reproduces many of its properties, including the overall mass distribution, the disc kinematics, and the properties of the central bar. Our high-resolution (N ~ 10^8 particles) simulation, performed with the Ramses code, starts from an axisymmetric non-equilibrium configuration constructed within the AGAMA framework. This is a self-consistent dynamical model of the MW defined by the best available parameters for the dark matter halo, the stellar disc and the bulge. For the known (stellar and gas) disc mass (4.5 x 10^10 Msun) and disc mass fraction at R ~ 2.2 R_d (f_d ~ 0.3 - 0.6), the low mass limit does not yield a bar in a Hubble time. The high mass limit adopted here produces a box/peanut bar within about 2 Gyr with the correct mass (~10^10 Msun), size (~5 kpc) and peak pattern speed (~ 40-45 km/s/kpc). In agreement with earlier work, the bar formation timescale scales inversely with f_d (i.e. log [T/Gyr] ~ 0.60/f_d - 0.83 for 1 < f_d < 0.3). The disc radial heating is strong, but, in contrast to earlier claims, we find that disc vertical heating outside of the box/peanut bulge structure is negligible. The synthetic barred MW exhibits long-term stability, except for the slow decline (roughly -2 km/s/kpc/Gyr) of the bar pattern speed, consistent with recent estimates. If our model is indicative of the Milky Way, we estimate that the bar first emerged 3-4 Gyr ago., Comment: We welcome comments and missing references

Stellar shells are low surface brightness features, created during nearly head-on galaxy mergers from the debris of the tidally disrupted satellite. Here, we investigate the formation and evolution mechanism of shells in six dimensions (3d positions and velocities). We propose a new description in action-angle coordinates which condenses the seemingly complex behaviour of an expanding shell system into a simple picture, and stresses the crucial role of the existence of different stripping episodes in the properties of shells. Based on our findings, we construct a method for constraining the potential of the host galaxy and the average epoch of stripping. The method is applicable even if the shells cannot be identified or isolated from the data, or if the data are heavily contaminated with additional foreground stars. These results open up a new possibility to study the ancient merger that built the Milky Way Galaxy's stellar halo., Comment: matches published version

We apply four different mass modelling methods to a suite of publicly available mock data for spherical stellar systems. We focus on the recovery of the density and velocity anisotropy as a function of radius, using either line-of-sight velocity data only, or adding proper motion data. All methods perform well on isotropic and tangentially anisotropic mock data, recovering the density and velocity anisotropy within their 95% confidence intervals over the radial range 0.25 < R/Rhalf < 4, where Rhalf is the half light radius. However, radially-anisotropic mocks are more challenging. For line-of-sight data alone, only methods that use information about the shape of the velocity distribution function are able to break the degeneracy between the density profile and the velocity anisotropy to obtain an unbiased estimate of both. This shape information can be obtained through directly fitting a global phase space distribution function, by using higher order 'Virial Shape Parameters', or by assuming a Gaussian velocity distribution function locally, but projecting it self-consistently along the line of sight. Including proper motion data yields further improvements, and in this case, all methods give a good recovery of both the radial density and velocity anisotropy profiles., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures. We investigate the ability of basis function expansions to reproduce the evolution of a Milky Way-like dark matter halo, extracted from a cosmological zoom-in simulation. For each snapshot, the density of the halo is reduced to a basis function expansion, with interpolation used to recreate the evolution between snapshots. The angular variation of the halo density is described by spherical harmonics, and the radial variation either by biorthonormal basis functions adapted to handle truncated haloes or by splines. High fidelity orbit reconstructions are attainable using either method with similar computational expense. We quantify how the error in the reconstructed orbits varies with expansion order and snapshot spacing. Despite the many possible biorthonormal expansions, it is hard to beat a conventional Hernquist-Ostriker expansion with a moderate number of terms ($\gtrsim15$ radial and $\gtrsim6$ angular). As two applications of the developed machinery, we assess the impact of the time-dependence of the potential on (i) the orbits of Milky Way satellites, and (ii) planes of satellites as observed in the Milky Way and other nearby galaxies. Time evolution over the last 5 Gyr introduces an uncertainty in the Milky Way satellites' orbital parameters of $\sim 15$ per cent, comparable to that induced by the observational errors or the uncertainty in the present-day Milky Way potential. On average, planes of satellites grow at similar rates in evolving and time-independent potentials. There can be more, or less, growth in the plane's thickness, if the plane becomes less, or more, aligned with the major or minor axis of the evolving halo., Comment: MNRAS, submitted

The Gaia Sausage is the major accretion event that built the stellar halo of the Milky Way galaxy. Here, we provide dynamical and chemical evidence for a second substantial accretion episode, distinct from the Gaia Sausage. The Sequoia Event provided the bulk of the high energy retrograde stars in the stellar halo, as well as the recently discovered globular cluster FSR 1758. There are up to 6 further globular clusters, including $\omega$~Centauri, as well as many of the retrograde substructures in Myeong et al. (2018), associated with the progenitor dwarf galaxy, named the Sequoia. The stellar mass in the Sequoia galaxy is $\sim 5 \times 10^{7} M_\odot$, whilst the total mass is $\sim 10^{10} M_\odot$, as judged from abundance matching or from the total sum of the globular cluster mass. Although clearly less massive than the Sausage, the Sequoia has a distinct chemo-dynamical signature. The strongly retrograde Sequoia stars have a typical eccentricity of $\sim0.6$, whereas the Sausage stars have no clear net rotation and move on predominantly radial orbits. On average, the Sequoia stars have lower metallicity by $\sim 0.3$ dex and higher abundance ratios as compared to the Sausage. We conjecture that the Sausage and the Sequoia galaxies may have been associated and accreted at a comparable epoch., Comment: MNRAS, revised version in light of referee's comments. We investigate physical properties of molecular clouds in disc galaxies with different morphology: a galaxy without prominent structure, a spiral barred galaxy and a galaxy with flocculent structure. Our $N$-body/hydrodynamical simulations take into account non-equilibrium H$_2$ and CO chemical kinetics, self-gravity, star formation and feedback processes. For the simulated galaxies the scaling relations of giant molecular clouds or so called Larson's relations are studied for two types of a cloud definition (or extraction methods): the first one is based on total column density position-position (PP) datasets and the second one is indicated by the CO~(1-0) line emission used position-position-velocity (PPV) data. We find that the cloud populations obtained by using both cloud extraction methods generally have similar physical parameters. Except that for the CO data the mass spectrum of clouds has a tail with low-massive objects $M\sim 10^3-10^4$~\Msun. Varying column density threshold the power-law indices in the scaling relations are significantly changed. In contrast, the relations are invariant to CO brightness temperature threshold. Finally, we find that the mass spectra of clouds for the PPV data are almost insensitive to the galactic morphology, whereas the spectra for the PP data demonstrate significant variations., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 16 pages, 9 figures

The evolution of a supernova remnant in a cloudy medium as a function of the volume filling factor of the clouds is studied in a three-dimensional axially symmetrical model. The model includes the mixing of heavy elements (metals) ejected by the supernova and their contribution to radiative losses. The interaction of the supernova envelope with the cloudy phase of the interstellar medium leads to nonsimultaneous, and on average earlier, onsets of the radiative phase in different parts of the supernova envelope. Growth in the volume filling factor $f$ leads to a decrease in the time for the transition of the envelope to the radiative phase and a decrease in the envelope's mean radius, due to the increased energy losses by the envelope in the cloudy medium. When the development of hydrodynamical instabilities in the supernova envelope is efficient, the thermal energy falls as $E_t\sim t^{-2.3}$, for the propagation of the supernova remnant through either a homogeneous or a cloudy medium. When the volume filling factor is $f\simgt 0.1$, a layer with excess kinetic energy andmomentumforms far behind the global shock front from the supernova, which traps the hot gas of the cavity in the central part of the supernova remnant. Metals ejected by the supernova are also enclosed in the central region of the remnant, where the initial (high) metallicity is essentially preserved. Thus, the interaction of the supernova envelope with the cloudy interstellar medium appreciably changes the dynamics and structure of the distribution of the gas in the remnant. This affects the observational characteristics of the remnant, in particularly, leading to substantial fluctuations of the emission measure of the gas with $T>10^5$~K and the velocity dispersion of the ionized gas., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures

We present a numerical code for multi-component simulation of the galactic evolution. Our code includes the following parts: $N$-body is used to evolve dark matter, stellar dynamics and dust grains, gas dynamics is based on TVD-MUSCL scheme with the extra modules for thermal processes, star formation, magnetic fields, chemical kinetics and multi-species advection. We describe our code in brief, but we give more details for the magneto-gas dynamics. We present several tests for our code and show that our code have passed the tests with a reasonable accuracy. Our code is parallelized using the MPI library. We consider evolution of metal-enriched gas exposed to a superposition of time-dependent radiation field of a nearby starburst galaxy and nearly invariant (on timescales 100 Myr) extragalactic ionization background. Within nonequilibrium (time-dependent) photoionization models we determine ionization fraction of the OVI ion commonly observed in galactic circumference. We derive then conditions for OVI to appear in absorptions in extended galactic haloes depending on the galactic mass and star formation rate. We have found that the maximum OVI fraction can reach $\sim 0.4-0.9$ under combined action of the galactic and the extragalactic ionizing radiation fields. We conclude that soft X-ray emission with $E\simgt 113$~eV from the stellar population of central starforming galaxies is the main source of such a high fraction of OVI. This circumstance can explain high column densities ${\rm N(OVI)} \sim 10^{14.5 - 15.3}$~cm$^{-2}$ observed in the haloes of starforming galaxies at low redshifts (Tumlinson etal 2011) {\it even} for a relatively low ({ $\sim 0.01-0.1\zsun$}) metallicity. As a result, the requirements to the sources of oxygen in the extended haloes relax to a reasonably conservative level. We show that at $z\simlt 0.5$ ionization kinetics of oxygen in a relatively dense plasma $n\simgt 10^{-4}$ cm$^{-3}$ of outer halo exposed to a low extragalactic ionizing flux is dominated by nonequilibrium effects., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, matches the version accepted in MNRAS

The imprint of decaying dark matter (DM) particles in characteristics of the "21 cm fores" -- absorptions in 21 cm from minihalos in spectra of distant radio-loud sources -- is considered within a 1D self-consistent hydrodynamic description of minihalos from their turnaround point to virialization. The most pronounced influence of decaying DM on evolution of minihalos is found in the mass range $M=10^5-10^6\msun$, for which unstable DM with the current upper limit of the ionization rate $\xi_{L} = 0.59\times 10^{-25}$ s$^{-1}$ depresses 21 cm optical depth by an order of magnitude compared to the standard recombination scenario. Even rather a modest ionization $\xi \sim 0.3\xi_L$ practically "erases" absorption features and results in a considerable decrease (by factor of more than 2.5) of the number of strong ($W_\nu^{obs} \simgt 0.3$ kHz at $z\simeq 10$) absorptions. At such circumstances broad-band observations are to be more suitable for inferring physical conditions of the absorbing gas. X-ray photons from stellar activity of initial episodes of star formation can compete the contribution from decaying DM only at $z<10$. Therefore, when observed the 21 cm signal will allow to follow evolution of decaying DM particles in the redshift range $z=10-15$. The paper considers the evolution of the supernova envelopes produced by Population III stars with masses of $M_*\sim 25-200 M_\odot$ located in non-rotating protogalaxies with masses of $M\sim 10^7 M_\odot$ at redshifts $z=12$, with dark-matter density profiles in the form of modified isothermal spheres. The supernova explosion occurs in the ionization zone formed by a single parent star. The properties of the distribution of heavy elements (metals) produced by the parent star are investigated, as well as the efficiency with which they are mixed with the primordial gas in the supernova envelope. In supernovae with high energies ($E\simgt 5\times 10^{52}$ erg), an appreciable fraction of the gas can be ejected from the protogalaxy, but nearly all the heavy elements remain in the protogalaxy. In explosions with lower energies ($E\simlt 3\times 10^{52}$ erg), essentially no gas and heavy elements are lost from the protogalaxy: during the first one to threemillion years, the gas and heavy elements are actively carried from the central region of the protogalaxy ($r\sim 0.1 r_{vir}$, where $r_{vir}$ is the virial radius of the protogalaxy), but an appreciable fraction of the mass of metals subsequently returns when the hot cavity cools and the envelope collapses. Supernovae with high energies ($E\simgt 5\times 10^{52}$ erg) are characterized by a very low efficiency of mixing of metals; their heavy elements are located in the small volume occupied by the disrupted envelope (in a volume comparable with that of the entire envelope), with most of the metals remaining inside the hot, rarified cavity of the envelope. We consider the evolution of the ionization zone around Population III stars with $M_*\sim 25-200 M_\odot$ in protogalaxies with $M\sim 10^7 M_\odot$ at redshifts $z = 12$, assuming that the dark matter profile is a modified isothermal sphere. We study the conditions for the growth of instabilities in the ionization zones. The Rayleigh-Taylor and thermal instabilities develop efficiently in the ionization zones around 25-40 $M_\odot$ stars, while this efficiency is lower for stars with $\sim 120 M_\odot$. For more massive stars ($\sim 200 M_\odot$), the flux of ionizing photons is strong enough to considerably reduce the gas density in the ionization zone, and the typical lifetimes of stars ($\sim 2$ Myr) are insufficient for the growth of instabilities. The gas in a protogalaxy with $M\sim 10^7 M_\odot$ with a 200 $M_\odot$ central star is completely ionized by the end of the star's lifetime; in the case of a 120 $M_\odot$ central star, only one-third of the total mass of gas is ionized. Thus, ionizing photons from stars with $M_*\simlt 120 M_\odot$ cannot leave protogalaxies with $M\simgt 10^7 M_\odot$. If the masses of the central stars are 25 and 40 $M_\odot$, the gas in protogalaxies of this mass remains essentially neutral. We discuss the consequences of the evolution of the ionization zones for the propagation of the envelope after the supernova explosions of the stars and the efficiency of enrichment of the intergalactic medium in heavy elements., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

The absorption properties of the first low-mass protogalaxies (mini-halos) forming at high redshifts in the 21-cm line of atomic hydrogen are considered. The absorption properties of these protogalaxies are shown to depend strongly on both their mass and evolutionary status. The optical depths in the line reach $\sim$0.1-0.2 for small impact parameters of the line of sight. When a protogalaxy being compressed, the influence of gas accretion can be seen manifested in a non-monotonic frequency dependence of the optical depth. The absorption characteristics in the 21-cm line are determined by the thermal and dynamical evolution of the gas in protogalaxies. Since the theoretical line width in the observer's reference frame is 1-6 kHz and the expected separation between lines 8.4 kHz, the lines from low mass protogalaxies can be resolved using ongoing and future low frequency interferometers., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Using 3D hydrodynamic calculations we simulate formation of molecular clouds in the Galaxy. The simulations take into account molecular hydrogen chemical kinetics, cooling and heating processes. Comprehensive gravitational potential accounts for contributions from the stellar bulge, two and four armed spiral structure, stellar disk, dark halo and takes into account self-gravitation of the gaseous component. Gas clouds in our model form in the spiral arms due to shear and wiggle instabilities and turn into molecular clouds after $t\simgt 100$ Myr. At the times $t\sim 100 - 300$ Myr the clouds form hierarchical structures and agglomerations with the sizes of 100 pc and greater. We analyze physical properties of the simulated clouds and find that synthetic statistical distributions like mass spectrum, "mass-size" relation and velocity dispersion are close to those observed in the Galaxy. The synthetic $l-v$ (galactic longitude - radial velocity) diagram of the simulated molecular gas distribution resembles observed one and displays a structure with appearance similar to Molecular Ring of the Galaxy. Existence of this structure in our modelling can be explained by superposition of emission from the galactic bar and the spiral arms at $\sim$3-4 kpc., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

We consider the influence of decaying dark matter (DM) particles on the characteristics of 21 cm absorption in spectra of distant radio-loud sources - "21 cm forest" - from minihaloes with masses $M=10^5-10^7\msun$ virialized at $z_{vir} = 10$. We use 1D self-consistent hydrodynamic description to study evolution of minihaloes, and follow up their absorption characteristics from turnaround to virialization. We find that in the presence of decaying dark matter both thermal and dynamical evolution of minihaloes demonstrate significant deviation from those in the model without dark matter decay (standard recombination). We show that optical depth in 21 cm line is strongly suppressed in the presence of decaying particles: for $M=10^5-10^6\msun$ decaying dark matter with the energy rate deposited in baryonic gas $\xi_{L} = 0.59\times 10^{-25}$ s$^{-1}$ - the current upper limit of the energy deposit - decreases the optical depth and the equivalent width by an order of magnitude compared to the standard recombination. Thus additional ionization and heating from decaying DM particles almost "erases" absorption features from minihaloes with $M=10^5-10^6\msun$ for $\xi \simgt 0.3\xi_L$, which consequently considerably decreases the number of strong absorptions: for example, the number of absorptions with the equivalent width $W_\nu^{obs} \simgt 0.3$ kHz at $z\simeq10$ decreases more than 2.5 times for $\xi/\xi_{L} = 0.3$ and $\simgt$4.5 times for $\xi/\xi_{L} = 1$. We argue that "21 cm forest" absorptions might be a powerful probe of the presence of decaying dark matter in the early Universe., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

We use both N-body simulations and integration in fixed potentials to explore the stability and the long-term secular evolution of self-consistent, equilibrium, non-rotating, triaxial spheroidal galactic models. More specifically, we consider Dehnen models built with the Schwarzschild method. We show that short-term stability depends on the degree of velocity anisotropy (radially anisotropic models are subject to rapid development of radial-orbit instability). Long-term stability, on the other hand, depends mainly on the properties of the potential, and in particular, on whether it admits a substantial fraction of strongly chaotic orbits. We show that in the case of a weak density cusp (gamma=1 Dehnen model) the N-body model is remarkably stable, while the strong-cusp (gamma=2) model exhibits substantial evolution of shape away from triaxiality, which we attribute to the effect of chaotic diffusion of orbits. The different behaviour of these two cases originates from the different phase space structure of the potential; in the weak-cusp case there exist numerous resonant orbit families that impede chaotic diffusion. We also find that it is hardly possible to affect the rate of this evolution by altering the fraction of chaotic orbits in the Schwarzschild model, which is explained by the fact that the chaotic properties of an orbit are not preserved by the N-body evolution. There are, however, parameters in Schwarzschild modelling that do affect the stability of an N-body model, so we discuss the recipes how to build a `good' Schwarzschild model., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

(Abridged) We explore numerically the chemical, thermal, and dynamical evolution of a shell formed by a high-energy supernova explosion ($10^{53}$ erg) in dwarf protogalaxies with total mass $10^7 M_\odot$ at a redshift $z=12$. We consider two initial configurations for the baryonic matter, one without rotation and the other having the ratio of rotational to gravitational energy $\beta=0.17$. The (non-rotating) dark matter halo is described by a quasi-isothermal sphere. We find that the dynamics of the shell is different in protogalaxies with and without rotation. For instance, the Rayleigh-Taylor instability in the shell develops faster in protogalaxies without rotation. The fraction of a blown-away baryonic mass is approximately twice as large in models with rotation ($\sim 20%$) than in models without rotation. On the other hand, the chemical evolution of gas in protogalaxies with and without rotation is found to be similar. The relative number densities of molecular hydrogen and HD molecules in the cold gas ($T \le 10^3$ K) saturate at typical values of $10^{-3}$ and $10^{-7}$, respectively. The clumps formed in the fragmented shell move with velocities that are at least twice as large as the escape velocity. The mass of the clumps is $\sim 0.1-10 \msun$, which is lower than the Jeans mass. We conclude that the clumps are pressure supported. A supernova explosion with energy $10^{53}$ ergs destructs our model protogalaxy. The clumps formed in the fragmented shell are pressure supported. We conclude that protogalaxies with total mass $\sim 10^{7} M_\odot$ are unlikely to form stars due to high-energy supernova explosions of the first stars., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted in A&A

Thermal regime of the baryons behind shock waves arising in the process of virialization of dark matter halos is governed at cetrain conditions by radiation of HD lines. A small fraction of the shocked gas can cool down to the temperature of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We estimate an upper limit for this fraction: at $z=10$ it increases sharply from about $q_{_T}\sim 10^{-3}$ for dark halos of $M=5\times 10^7\msun$ to $\sim 0.1$ for halos with $M=10^8\msun$. Further increase of the halo mass does not lead however to a significant growth of $q_T$ -- the asymptotic value for $M\gg 10^8\msun$ is of 0.3. We estimate star formation rate associated with such shock waves, and show that they can provide a small but not negligible fraction of the star formation. We argue that extremely metal-poor low-mass stars in the Milky Way may have been formed from primordial gas behind such shocks., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The presence of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR) results in an increase in the degree of ionization in the post-recombination Universe, which stimulates the efficiency of the production of H$_2$ molecules and the formation of the first stellar objects. As a result, the onset of the formation of the first stars is shifted to higher redshifts, and the masses of the first stellar systems decrease. As a consequence, a sufficient increase in the ionizing radiation providing the reionization of the Universe can take place.
