1. Zoophagous entomofauna and entomopathogenic agents reported on Cydalima perspectalis (Walker, 1859) in north-western of Romania

Abstract

In Europe, the box tree moth, Cydalima perspectalis (Walker, 1859) was first reported in 2006, in southwestern Germany, then spread to almost all countries. Larvae of this species affect the aesthetic value of the box tree. In the last period, numerous studies were carried out regarding the identification of useful entomofauna that reduce the numerical density of the population of Cydalima perspectalis. In this study conducted in north-western Romania (Cluj County, in 2019), entomopathogens and useful entomofauna were monitored in four areas, represented by four cities. The entomopathogenic agents contaminated the larvae of the box tree moth in a proportion of 5.6% at Gherla, 6.8% at Dej, 8.7% at Cluj-Napoca and 15.3% at Ciucea. Most larvae have been infected with Bacillus. At Cluj-Napoca and Ciucea, the presence of the larval endoparasite Exorista larvarum L. (Diptera: Tachinidae) was reported. Parasitoid species determined a parasitization rate of 5.1% at Dej, 8.6% at Gherla and 13.4% at Cluj-Napoca. Predators affected pupae in a proportion of 3.8% at Gherla, 4.2% at Dej and 16% at Cluj-Napoca. Among the pupae predators, for the first-time common earwig was reported, Forficula auricularia L. Entomopathogenic agents affected 5.3% of the pupae collected from Cluj-Napoca, 7.7% in Gherla and 12.5% in Dej. During the monitoring period of the zoophagous entomofauna and the entomopathogenic microorganisms, affected the pupae in a percentage of 20.1% in Gherla, 21.8% in Dej, 34.7% in Cluj-Napoca, contributing to the diminution of the population of the harmful species.

Abstract

Optical readout of GEM based devices by means of high granularity and low noise CMOS sensors allows to obtain very interesting tracking performance. Space resolution of the order of tens of $\mu$m were measured on the GEM plane along with an energy resolution of 20%$\div$30%. The main limitation of CMOS sensors is represented by their poor information about time structure of the event. In this paper, the use of a concurrent light readout by means of a suitable photomultiplier and the acquisition of the electric signal induced on the GEM electrode are exploited to provide the necessary timing informations. The analysis of the PMT waveform allows a 3D reconstruction of each single clusters with a resolution on z of 100 $\mu$m. Moreover, from the PMT signals it is possible to obtain a fast reconstruction of the energy released within the detector with a resolution of the order of 25% even in the tens of keV range useful, for example, for triggering purpose., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

4. A First Look at User Activity on Tinder

Abstract

Mobile dating apps have become a popular means to meet potential partners. Although several exist, one recent addition stands out amongst all others. Tinder presents its users with pictures of people geographically nearby, whom they can either like or dislike based on first impressions. If two users like each other, they are allowed to initiate a conversation via the chat feature. In this paper we use a set of curated profiles to explore the behaviour of men and women in Tinder. We reveal differences between the way men and women interact with the app, highlighting the strategies employed. Women attain large numbers of matches rapidly, whilst men only slowly accumulate matches. To expand on our findings, we collect survey data to understand user intentions on Tinder. Most notably, our results indicate that a little effort in grooming profiles, especially for male users, goes a long way in attracting attention.

5. Design and performance of the field cage for the XENONnT experiment

Abstract

The precision in reconstructing events detected in a dual-phase time projection chamber depends on an homogeneous and well understood electric field within the liquid target. In the XENONnT TPC the field homogeneity is achieved through a double-array field cage, consisting of two nested arrays of field shaping rings connected by an easily accessible resistor chain. Rather than being connected to the gate electrode, the topmost field shaping ring is independently biased, adding a degree of freedom to tune the electric field during operation. Two-dimensional finite element simulations were used to optimize the field cage, as well as its operation. Simulation results were compared to 83mKr calibration data. This comparison indicates an accumulation of charge on the panels of the TPC which is constant over time, as no evolution of the reconstructed position distribution of events is observed. The simulated electric field was then used to correct the charge signal for the field dependence of the charge yield. This correction resolves the inconsistent measurement of the drift electron lifetime when using different calibrations sources and different field cage tuning voltages.

Abstract

The XENONnT detector uses the latest and largest liquid xenon-based time projection chamber (TPC) operated by the XENON Collaboration, aimed at detecting Weakly Interacting Massive Particles and conducting other rare event searches. The XENONnT data acquisition (DAQ) system constitutes an upgraded and expanded version of the XENON1T DAQ system. For its operation, it relies predominantly on commercially available hardware accompanied by open-source and custom-developed software. The three constituent subsystems of the XENONnT detector, the TPC (main detector), muon veto, and the newly introduced neutron veto, are integrated into a single DAQ, and can be operated both independently and as a unified system. In total, the DAQ digitizes the signals of 698 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), of which 253 from the top PMT array of the TPC are digitized twice, at ×10 and ×0.5 gain. The DAQ for the most part is a triggerless system, reading out and storing every signal that exceeds the digitization thresholds. Custom-developed software is used to process the acquired data, making it available within ∼30 s for live data quality monitoring and online analyses. The entire system with all the three subsystems was successfully commissioned and has been operating continuously, comfortably withstanding readout rates that exceed ∼500 MB/s during calibration. Livetime during normal operation exceeds 99% and is ∼90% during most high-rate calibrations. The combined DAQ system has collected more than 2 PB of both calibration and science data during the commissioning of XENONnT and the first science run.

10. Low-energy calibration of XENON1T with an internal 37Ar source

Abstract

A low-energy electronic recoil calibration of XENON1T, a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber, with an internal 37Ar source was performed. This calibration source features a 35-day half-life and provides two mono-energetic lines at 2.82 keV and 0.27 keV. The photon yield and electron yield at 2.82 keV are measured to be (32.3±0.3) photons/keV and (40.6±0.5) electrons/keV, respectively, in agreement with other measurements and with NEST predictions. The electron yield at 0.27 keV is also measured and it is (68.0+6.3−3.7) electrons/keV. The 37Ar calibration confirms that the detector is well-understood in the energy region close to the detection threshold, with the 2.82 keV line reconstructed at (2.83±0.02) keV, which further validates the model used to interpret the low-energy electronic recoil excess previously reported by XENON1T. The ability to efficiently remove argon with cryogenic distillation after the calibration proves that 37Ar can be considered as a regular calibration source for multi-tonne xenon detectors.

11. Detector signal characterization with a Bayesian network in XENONnT

Abstract

We developed a detector signal characterization model based on a Bayesian network trained on the waveform attributes generated by a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber. By performing inference on the model, we produced a quantitative metric of signal characterization and demonstrate that this metric can be used to determine whether a detector signal is sourced from a scintillation or an ionization process. We describe the method and its performance on electronic-recoil (ER) data taken during the first science run of the XENONnT dark matter experiment. We demonstrate the first use of a Bayesian network in a waveform -based analysis of detector signals. This method resulted in a 3% increase in ER event-selection efficiency with a simultaneously effective rejection of events outside of the region of interest. The findings of this analysis are consistent with the previous analysis from XENONnT, namely a background-only fit of the ER data.

12. First Dark Matter Search with Nuclear Recoils from the XENONnT Experiment

Abstract

We report on the first search for nuclear recoils from dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with the XENONnT experiment, which is based on a two-phase time projection chamber with a sensitive liquid xenon mass of 5.9 ton. During the (1.09±0.03) ton yr exposure used for this search, the intrinsic 85Kr and 222Rn concentrations in the liquid target are reduced to unprecedentedly low levels, giving an electronic recoil background rate of (15.8±1.3) events/ton yr keV in the region of interest. A blind analysis of nuclear recoil events with energies between 3.3 and 60.5 keV finds no significant excess. This leads to a minimum upper limit on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross section of 2.58×10−47 cm2 for a WIMP mass of 28 GeV/c2 at 90% confidence level. Limits for spin-dependent interactions are also provided. Both the limit and the sensitivity for the full range of WIMP masses analyzed here improve on previous results obtained with the XENON1T experiment for the same exposure.

Abstract

The nature of dark matter and properties of neutrinos are among the most pressing issues in contemporary particle physics. The dual-phase xenon time-projection chamber is the leading technology to cover the available parameter space for weakly interacting massive particles, while featuring extensive sensitivity to many alternative dark matter candidates. These detectors can also study neutrinos through neutrinoless double-beta decay and through a variety of astrophysical sources. A next-generation xenon-based detector will therefore be a true multi-purpose observatory to significantly advance particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, solar physics, and cosmology. This review article presents the science cases for such a detector.

Abstract

Objectives. Esophageal cancer is one of the most aggressive types of cancer, with a 5-year relative survival rate of only 18%-20.5%. Survival is highly dependent on accurate positive diagnosis and staging, in which the imaging modalities available have a primary role. The study is focused on the analysis of the preoperative T and M staging strategy and the reliability of computed tomography and endoscopic esophageal ultrasound in predicting resectability. A second objective was to evaluate the influence of preoperative imaging modalities on decreasing the number of unnecessary thoracotomies and laparotomies. Material and Methods. This study was conducted on a lot of 97 consecutive esophageal cancers, admitted in the Second General Surgery Clinic of Emergency County Hospital No. 1 of Craiova, between January 2007 to December 2019. We recorded patient data, imaging details and staging, as well as intraoperative aspects and tactics. For statistical analysis we have used chi square test. Conclusions. Computed tomography is not a basic investigation in the T-category evaluation of the TNM stage, the accuracy of the method being extremely variable with the T-stage, the type of CT scan. The maximum utility of CT remains in the identification of invasion of neighboring organs and the operability of the case. Despite the differences in the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of computed tomography and endoscopic ultrasound in esophageal cancer, the use of these imaging methods is essential in staging esophageal cancer and establishing the therapeutic indication.

Abstract

Abstract Background Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic protozoan parasite with a heteroxenus life cycle that involves felids as the definitive hosts and any warm-blooded animal, including humans, as intermediate hosts. Cats are key players in parasite transmission as they are capable of shedding high numbers of oocysts in their feces that contaminate the environment. Methods The study was performed on 31 domestic cats (31.23 ± 27.18 months old) originating from rural and urban areas (5.17:1) in the center and north-west Romania. Feces (n = 31), blood (n = 28), and heart samples (n = 27) were collected. Fecal samples were analyzed by flotation technique, and PCR (529 bp repetitive element). Fecal samples with T. gondii oocysts were bioassayed in mice. Serum samples were analyzed by modified agglutination test and ImmunoComb for the detection of specific anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies. Heart samples were bioassayed in mice, and analyzed by PCR. Toxoplasma gondii positive samples were genotyped by nPCR-RFLP targeting eleven genetic loci (SAG1, SAG2, alt-SAG2, SAG3, BTUB, GRA6, c22-8, c29-2, L358, PK1, and Apico). Results Toxoplasma gondii oocysts were found in 2 out of 31 fecal samples collected from a 3-months old stray kitten, and a 4-years old female. In total, 17 out of 27 sera were positive for T. gondii IgG antibodies. The antibody titers in MAT ranged from 1:6 to 1:384. Toxoplasma gondii DNA was detected in 7 out of 27 heart samples, and four of them were positive also by bioassay. Six T. gondii DNA samples from bioassayed mice could be assigned to ToxoDB PCR-RFLP genotype #1 or #3 (Type II) and one T. gondii DNA from heart digest to genotype #2 (Type III). Both of these genotypes are common in Europe. Conclusions Our results revealed that the infection with T. gondii is still high in cats from Romania. The oocysts shedded by these cats represent an important source of infection for intermediate hosts, including humans. Further studies on a wider range of cases are necessary for a more exhaustive definition of the T. gondii genotypes circulating in Romania.

Odată cu creșterea alarmantă a numărului de intervenții ablative în tratamentul bolii varicoase, aplicarea strategiilor safeno-menajante a devenit o necesitate actuală prin prisma semnificației venei safene în calitate de material autolog pentru o eventuală operație arterială reconstructivă. Noi am evaluat o serie clinică ce a inclus 194 de pacienţi (209 membre) cu varice primare ale extremităților inferioare, supuși intervențiilor chirurgicale flebologice cu prezervare safeniană. Articolul de față reflectă caracteristicile clinico-demografice ale bolnavilor și rezultatele investigațiilor imagistice preoperatorii, de rând cu efectele clinice precoce ale respectivelor tipuri de intervenții.

Abstract

Studiul a urmărit evidențierea semnificației diagnostice a tromboelastografiei la 44 bolnavi adulți cu varicotromboflebită (VTF) acută, diagnosticată prin duplex scanare. Distribuția procesului trombotic a fost descrisă conform clasificării Verrel-Steckmeier, tipurile II și III fiind definite ca „VTF periostială”. Rezultatele cercetării mărturisesc despre faptul că intensificarea procesului de hemostază la pacienții cu VTF posedă preponderent caracter structural, datorită densității crescute a cheagului format. Pacienții cu VTF acută manifestă un statut hipercoagulant îndeosebi când masele trombotice sunt localizate periostial.

Abstract

The plant-mediated synthesis of therapeutic metal nanoparticles is an intensively exploited field in the last decade. In particular, Salvia officinalis, considered one of these plants, was used in this work to synthesize silver particles. Here, we have used harmless substances to obtain silver particles and common characterization methods for quickly estimating sizes and shapes. Thus, UV–Visible spectroscopy helped us online-monitor and optimize the synthesis of silver particles and estimate the size of metallic particles in the stock solutions. The resulting eco-friendly synthesized silver particles were then separated and re-dispersed in water, to be analyzed by laser light scattering, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to prove their nanometric size and shape polydispersity. Furthermore, the role of citric acid in stabilizing colloidal solutions of silver nanoparticles was studied.

Abstract

We report on a blinded analysis of low-energy electronic recoil data from the first science run of the XENONnT dark matter experiment. Novel subsystems and the increased 5.9 ton liquid xenon target reduced the background in the (1, 30) keV search region to (15.8±1.3) events/(ton×year×keV), the lowest ever achieved in a dark matter detector and ∼5 times lower than in XENON1T. With an exposure of 1.16 ton-years, we observe no excess above background and set stringent new limits on solar axions, an enhanced neutrino magnetic moment, and bosonic dark matter.

Abstract

The XENON collaboration has published stringent limits on specific dark matter – nucleon recoil spectra from dark matter recoiling on the liquid xenon detector target. In this paper, we present an approximate likelihood for the XENON1T 1 t-year nuclear recoil search applicable to any nuclear recoil spectrum. Alongside this paper, we publish data and code to compute upper limits using the method we present. The approximate likelihood is constructed in bins of reconstructed energy, profiled along the signal expectation in each bin. This approach can be used to compute an approximate likelihood and therefore most statistical results for any nuclear recoil spectrum. Computing approximate results with this method is approximately three orders of magnitude faster than the likelihood used in the original publications of XENON1T, where limits were set for specific families of recoil spectra. Using this same method, we include toy Monte Carlo simulation-derived binwise likelihoods for the upcoming XENONnT experiment that can similarly be used to assess the sensitivity to arbitrary nuclear recoil signatures in its eventual 20 t-year exposure.

Abstract

Delayed single- and few-electron emissions plague dual-phase time projection chambers, limiting their potential to search for light-mass dark matter. This paper examines the origins of these events in the XENON1T experiment. Characterization of the intensity of delayed electron backgrounds shows that the resulting emissions are correlated, in time and position, with high-energy events and can effectively be vetoed. In this work we extend previous S2-only analyses down to a single electron. From this analysis, after removing the correlated backgrounds, we observe rates <30 events/(electron×kg×day) in the region of interest spanning 1 to 5 electrons. We derive 90% confidence upper limits for dark matter-electron scattering, first direct limits on the electric dipole, magnetic dipole, and anapole interactions, and bosonic dark matter models, where we exclude new parameter space for dark photons and solar dark photons.

Abstract

A novel online distillation technique was developed for the XENON1T dark matter experiment to reduce intrinsic background components more volatile than xenon, such as krypton or argon, while the detector was operating. The method is based on a continuous purification of the gaseous volume of the detector system using the XENON1T cryogenic distillation column. A krypton-in-xenon concentration of (360 +/- 60) ppq was achieved. It is the lowest concentration measured in the fiducial volume of an operating dark matter detector to date. A model was developed and fitted to the data to describe the krypton evolution in the liquid and gas volumes of the detector system for several operation modes over the time span of 550 days, including the commissioning and science runs of XENON1T. The online distillation was also successfully applied to remove Ar-37 after its injection for a low-energy calibration in XENON1T. This makes the usage of Ar-37 as a regular calibration source possible in the future. The online distillation can be applied to next-generation liquid xenon time projection chamber experiments to remove krypton prior to, or during, any science run. The model developed here allows further optimization of the distillation strategy for future large-scale detectors.

Abstract

Introduction Pituitary Neuroendocrine Tumors (PitNETs), formerly designated as „pituitary adenomas” (PA), represent a relatively common pathology in the neurosurgical field, accounting for approximately 5.1 cases per 100,000 population yearly. The term “non-functioning” defines all PitNETs that do not induce a hormonal syndrome, and they account for up to 30%. Notwithstanding many aspects regarding non-functional PitNETs that are controversial, like the management of remnants or recurrences, the neurosurgical approach is indisputably indicated in cases of tumoral syndrome. Material and Methods The authors of this study aimed to assess patients presenting with non-functioning PitNETs and their outcomes after surgery in the 3rd Neurosurgical Department of the Clinical Emergency Hospital “Bagdasar-Arseni”, Bucharest, for a period of 8 years, between 2016 and 2023. This study is based on a thorough appraisal of the patient’s demographic and clinicopathological data while focusing on the strategic role of the neurosurgical approach. Results A total of 325 patients were identified with non-functioning PitNETs, that were treated in our department between the 1st of January 2016 and the 31st of March 2024, of which 193 (59.38%) were male and 132 (40.61%) were female. The mean age at admission was 50.70 years in the male group and 53.44 years in the female group, and the clinical manifestations were mostly those related to the tumoral mass effect, while more than half of the patients also presented with hypopituitarism. All of the patients included in this study underwent neurosurgery via a transnasal trans-sphenoidal approach and a gross-total resection was performed in 79% of cases (N=257). Surgical complications were described. Gamma-knife surgery was a postoperative neurosurgical option for 33 cases (48.5% of the patients with tumor remnants). Conclusion Non-functioning PitNETs usually have a slow development, which allows them to grow until the mass effect syndrome sends the patients to the doctor. Trans-sphenoidal surgery is greatly effective in providing symptomatic relief and if grosstotal resection is performed, the chances of recurrence are smaller. However, the intervention should be performed by a neurosurgeon with extensive experience in trans-sphenoidal surgery, to raise the odds of success and minimize the risks of complications.

Common symptoms of the two groups were cough, weight loss, profuse sweating, loss of appetite and hemoptysis, while fever, headache, myo-arthralgias, and digestive symptoms characterized the TB+COV+ forms. The scores of radiological lesions in the TB+COV+ compared to TB+COV- group were significantly higher and persistent, revealing more frequent bilateral extensive lung lesions. There were no significant differences in the biological parameters between the two groups. Mortality was 2.2%, regardless of the association of COVID-19. The frequency of infections with Clostridioides difficile was higher in TB+COV+ cases.Conclusion: The co-infection of COVID-19 had a mild impact on the clinical and biological expression of tuberculosis diagnosed in a pandemic context.Keywords: tuberculosis, COVID-19 pandemic, co-infection, Romania

31. In vivo assessment of the antiparasitic effects of Allium sativum L. and Artemisia absinthium L. against gastrointestinal parasites in swine from low-input farms

Abstract

Abstract Background Ethno-veterinary practices could be used as a sustainable developmental tool by integrating traditional phytotherapy and husbandry. Phytotherapeutics are available and used worldwide. However, evidence of their antiparasitic efficacy is currently very limited. Parasitic diseases have a considerable effect on pig production, causing economic losses due to high morbidity and mortality. In this respect, especially smallholders and organic producers face severe challenges. Parasites, as disease causing agents, often outcompete other pathogens in such extensive production systems. A total of 720 faecal samples were collected in two farms from three age categories, i.e. weaners, fatteners, and sows. Flotation (Willis and McMaster method), modified Ziehl–Neelsen stained faecal smear, centrifugal sedimentation, modified Blagg technique, and faecal cultures were used to identify parasites and quantify the parasitic load. Results The examination confirmed the presence of infections with Eimeria spp., Cryptosporidium spp., Balantioides coli (syn. Balantidium coli), Ascaris suum, Oesophagostomum spp., Strongyloides ransomi, and Trichuris suis, distributed based on age category. A dose of 180 mg/kg bw/day of Allium sativum L. and 90 mg/kg bw/day of Artemisia absinthium L. powders, administered for 10 consecutive days, revealed a strong, taxonomy-based antiprotozoal and anthelmintic activity. Conclusions The results highlighted the therapeutic potential of both A. sativum and A. absinthium against gastrointestinal parasites in pigs. Their therapeutic effectiveness may be attributed to the content in polyphenols, tocopherols, flavonoids, sterols, sesquiterpene lactones, and sulfoxide. Further research is required to establish the minimal effective dose of both plants against digestive parasites in pigs.

Abstract

Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are often used in low-background particle physics experiments, which rely on an excellent response to single-photon signals and stable long-term operation. In particular, the Hamamatsu R11410 model is the light sensor of choice for liquid xenon dark matter experiments, including XENONnT. The same PMT model was also used for the predecessor, XENON1T, where issues affecting its long-term operation were observed. Here, we report on an improved PMT testing procedure which ensures optimal performance in XENONnT. Using both new and upgraded facilities, we tested 368 new PMTs in a cryogenic xenon environment. We developed new tests targeted at the detection of light emission and the degradation of the PMT vacuum through small leaks, which can lead to spurious signals known as afterpulses, both of which were observed in XENON1T. We exclude the use of 26 of the 368 tested PMTs and categorise the remainder according to their performance. Given that we have improved the testing procedure, yet we rejected fewer PMTs, we expect significantly better PMT performance in XENONnT.

Abstract

We report the results of a search for the inelastic scattering of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) in the XENON1T dark matter experiment. Scattering off Xe-129 is the most sensitive probe of inelastic WIMP interactions, with a signature of a 39.6 keV deexcitation photon detected simultaneously with the nuclear recoil. Using an exposure of 0.83 tonne-years, we find no evidence of inelastic WIMP scattering with a significance of more than 2 sigma. A profile-likelihood ratio analysis is used to set upper limits on the cross section of WIMP-nucleus interactions. We exclude new parameter space for WIMPs heavier than 100 GeV/c(2), with the strongest upper limit of 3.3 x 10(-39) cm(2) for 130 GeV/c(2) WIMPs at 90% confidence level.

Abstract

The selection of low-radioactive construction materials is of utmost importance for the success of lowenergy rare event search experiments. Besides radioactive contaminants in the bulk, the emanation of radioactive radon atoms from material surfaces attains increasing relevance in the effort to further reduce the background of such experiments. In this work, we present the 222Rn emanation measurements performed for the XENON1T dark matter experiment. Together with the bulk impurity screening campaign, the results enabled us to select the radio-purest construction materials, targeting a 222Rn activity concentration of 10 mu Bq/kg in 3.2 t of xenon. The knowledge of the distribution of the 222Rn sources allowed us to selectively eliminate problematic components in the course of the experiment. The predictions from the emanation measurements were compared to data of the 222Rn activity concentration in XENON1T. The final 222Rn activity concentration of (4.5 +/- 0.1) mu Bq/kg in the target of XENON1T is the lowest ever achieved in a xenon dark matter experiment.

Abstract

We report on a search for nuclear recoil signals from solar B-8 neutrinos elastically scattering off xenon nuclei in XENON1T data, lowering the energy threshold from 2.6 to 1.6 keV. We develop a variety of novel techniques to limit the resulting increase in backgrounds near the threshold. No significant B-8 neutrinolike excess is found in an exposure of 0.6 t x y. For the first time, we use the nondetection of solar neutrinos to constrain the light yield from 1-2 keV nuclear recoils in liquid xenon, as well as nonstandard neutrino-quark interactions. Finally, we improve upon world-leading constraints on dark matter-nucleus interactions for dark matter masses between 3 and 11 GeV c(-2) by as much as an order of magnitude.

Abstract

This case report explores the application of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) techniques combined with creative-unifying meditation in reducing anxiety, depression and enhancing the satisfaction with life in an adult suspected of type 1 diabetes. The participant, a 37-year-old female, exhibited severe anxiety and depression symptoms at baseline. These symptoms were associated with various life-stressors and were exacerbated by the suspicion of diabetes. After a 4-session intervention practising psychological flexibility and creative-unifying meditation skills, the participant’s anxiety and depression symptoms showed significant improvements. Moreover, her satisfaction with life increased, despite the fact that the type 1 diabetes diagnosis was confirmed before ending the intervention. The positive outcomes were maintained at one-week follow-up. While the study highlights beneficial results, limitations, such as a small sample size and short follow-up, underscore the need for future research. The findings suggest that integrating creative-unifying meditation with ACT skills holds promise in addressing psychological challenges associated with diabetes states.

Tuberculoza este o boală cronică infecțioasă și transmisibilă, cauzată de Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Reprezintă cea mai frecventă patologie granulomatoasă care afectează laringele. În majoritatea cazurilor este secundară tuberculozei pulmonare. Tuberculoza laringiană constituie o problemă de sănătate publică ca urmare a modificărilor tiparului clinic al bolii care conduce frecvent la diagnosticare greșită și tardivă, cu tratament întârziat, ceea ce determină creșterea riscului de contagiune. Scopul acestei lucrări este de a evidenția aspectele de diagnostic și de tratament al tuberculozei laringelui.

Abstract

Studiul a prevăzut evaluarea rezultatelor tratamentului ischemiei acute (IA) a extremităților la pacienții cu infecție cu coronavirus de tip nou (COVID-19). Lotul a inclus 62 pacienți; 67 extremități: superioare - 19 (28,3%), inferioare - 48 (71,6%). Repartizarea cazurilor în funcție de gradul IA (Rutherford): I - 7 (10,4%), IIA - 10 (14,9%), IIB - 34 (50,7%), III - 16 (23,8%). COVID-19 s-a confirmat prin testul polymerase chain reaction , la 45 (72,5%) pacienți fiind documentată afectarea pulmonară. Tratamentului chirurgical au fost supuși 50 (80,6%) pacienți; 52 membre. Rata amputațiilor pe durata spitalizării (9,4±9 zile) - 19,4%; rata decesului - 43,5%, fiind influențată semnificativ de prezența sau absența afectării pulmonare - 55,5% vs. 11,7% (P=0,002; testul χ²). Potențial predictiv al mortalității au manifestat biomarkerii: proteina C reactivă/albumina, trombocite/limfocite, fibrinogen/albumina. Către follow-upul de 21 (25%-75%IQR 19-28) luni supraviețuirea generală și fără amputații: 56,4% și 57,1%, corespunzător.

Autoimmune vasculopathy in SSc occurs early and begins with endothelial cell activation followed by blood vessel intimal proliferation in a context of defective angiogenesis. The alteration of peripheral micro and macrocirculation in SSc is evident through vascular lesions, such as Raynaud’s phenomenon, telangiectasias, acrocyanosis, digital ulcers, gangrene, peripheral pulse deficiency. Our paper details the results of the study on the association between telangiectasias and other types of immune-mediated peripheral vascular lesions that can be identified in SSc. The presence of these peripheral vascular lesions can provide information about the magnitude of the peripheral vasculopathy.Patients and Methods: A total of 37 patients diagnosed with SSc, recruited from a university clinic in Bucharest between February 2019 and March 2020, were enrolled in an observational study. We evaluated the presence of telangiectasias, as a stigma of autoimmune microvasculopathy, and their association with other immune-mediated peripheral vascular lesions that may be present in SSc.Results: The presence of telangiectasias was identified in the absence, but especially in the presence of acrocyanosis and digital ulcerations, and patients with peripheral pulse deficiency almost always had telangiectasias. Less than a quarter of the patients with digital ulcers progressed unfavorably to gangrene, and only one required amputation, telangiectasias being present not only in the patient with amputation but in all patients with gangrene.Conclusion: We appreciate that telangiectasias may be the clinical expression of peripheral vasculopathy characteristic of SSc, they can often be present in association with other peripheral vascular lesions and may represent a valuable indicator for the gangrene risk of digital ulcerations in SSc.Keywords: systemic sclerosis, vascular lesions, phenomenon Raynaud’s, telangiectasias, acrocianosis, digital ulcers

Abstract

In addition to the course of over 20 years of cucurbit-7-uril (CB[7]) in the pharmaceutical industry, the present study brings together the most recent observations from the perspective of ultrasensitive Raman spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory (DFT) related to the interaction of this molecule with atenolol (Ate) enantiomers during the formation of these host–guest complexes. Quantum chemistry calculations based on DFT were first used to understand the interaction geometry between CB[7] and Ate. These results were further confirmed by ultrasensitive vibrational spectroscopy. The spectral features associated with each enantiomer in the presence of CB[7] were analyzed by means of SERS, highlighting distinct interaction profiles. These experimental findings validated quantum chemical calculations, offering a comprehensive understanding of the host–guest interactions at the nanoscale level.

Abstract

This study looks at post-detention migration and focuses on the reasons, challenges and solutions for preventing recidivism and ensuring reintegration into society. This research involves an analysis of the factors influencing the intention to emigrate of criminally sanctioned persons in Romania, the differences between the types of crimes and their impact on the desire to leave the country, as well as the causes of external migration, such as unattractive jobs and inadequate income at the level of the family of origin. The results show that people who have committed crimes against a person are more inclined to emigrate compared to those who have committed crimes against property. Unattractive jobs and insufficient income are also significant factors contributing to the decision to emigrate. This study proposes solutions to facilitate the reintegration of these people into Romanian society and reduce recidivism rates.
