Abstract

The objective of this investigation is to synthesize and investigate zero-valent iron (ZVI) nanoparticles (NPs) for bioremediation applications. The ZVI-NPs were fabricated by chemical reduction using a ferrous salt solution with poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), used as a stabilizer. The synthesis was conducted with and without ultrasonic treatment. The ZVI NPs were fabricated and characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Experimental observations demonstrate that depending on synthesis conditions and coordination of stabilizers, NPs with different morphologies are formed. Colloidal solutions of the synthesized NPs were used in antimicrobial activity tests and biofilm formation assays for nine different control microorganisms: Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 15692), Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29122), Klebsiella pneumoniae (laboratory isolates), Proteus vulgaris (laboratory isolates), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 29213), Bacillus cereus (DSMZ 4312), Bacillus subtilis (ATCC 6633), and Candida albicans (ATCC 10231). All control strains did not show antibacterial effect against PVP-stabilized ZVI NPs synthesized without ultrasonic treatment. However, biofilm results show that the highest absorbance values of the micro-organisms were tested in control wells.

Abstract

The emergence of novel pathogens is a well-known epidemiological risk; however, the unexpected emergence of a truly novel coronavirus-mediated pandemic due to SARS-CoV-2 underscored the significance of understanding this contagion. The pandemic, due to novel coronavirus, termed COVID-19, caused unprecedented social, economic, and educational disruptions on a scale never seen before. In addition to social protocols, safe, effective, and affordable vaccines were developed within months, the cornerstone of the mitigation of this pandemic. We present an overview of the evolution of the pandemic from a historical perspective and describe its biology and behavior, especially the immunological aspects of the disease. We further provide an overview of therapeutics, treatment, and vaccine development to mitigate SARS-CoV-2. It is critical to understand the transmission mechanism of the disease to control and mitigate its progression. We describe cohort studies to identify secondary and tertiary syndromes. The transmission characteristics help its diagnosis and detection. During the pandemic, a lot of emphasis was placed on personal protection equipment. It is now concluded that the virus particles are spread by aerosol dispersion. While the recommended distance may not have been sufficient, the use of personal protective equipment and social distancing was helpful in close-quarters environments. Such protocols, in conjunction with safe and effective vaccines and personal hygiene, are among the safe practices. While we learn from our experience, this review provides a holistic overview of the pandemic and encapsulates the event in a historical context. In doing so, we hope to understand the SARS-CoV-2 virus and take sufficient precautionary measures to mitigate consequences during any subsequent similar pandemics. In addition to a wide-spectrum automated analytics system introduced by the authors earlier, we propose the use of artificial intelligence in conjunction with data analytics to minimize the risk of speculatively diagnosing agents incorrectly by employing a novel concept of cloud-based presumptive diagnosis.

31. Toxicity Risk Assessment Due to Particulate Matter Pollution from Regional Health Data: Case Study from Central Romania

Abstract

Air pollution poses one of the greatest dangers to public well-being. This article outlines a study conducted in the Central Romania Region regarding the health risks associated with particulate matter (PM) of two sizes, viz., PM10 and PM2.5. The methodology used consists of the following: (i) an analysis of the effects of PM pollutants, (ii) an analysis of total mortality and cardiovascular-related mortality, and (iii) a general health risk assessment. The Central Region of Romania is situated in the Carpathian Mountains’ inner arch (consisting of six counties). The total population of the region under investigation is about 2.6 million inhabitants. Health risk assessment is calculated based on the relative risk (RR) formula. During the study period, our simulations show that reducing these pollutants’ concentrations below the new WHO guidelines (2021) will prevent over 172 total fatalities in Brasov alone, as an example. Furthermore, the potential benefit of reducing annual PM2.5 levels on total cardiovascular mortality is around 188 persons in Brasov. Although health benefits may also depend upon other physiological parameters, all general health indicators point towards a significant improvement in overall health by a general reduction in particulate matter, as is shown by the toxicity assessment of the particulate matter in the region of interest. The modality can be applied to other locations for similar studies.

Abstract

The process of electrospinning is over a century old, yet novel material and method achievements, and later the addition of nanomaterials in polymeric solutions, have spurred a significant increase in research innovations with several unique applications. Significant improvements have been achieved in the development of electrospun nanofibrous matrices, which include tailoring compositions of polymers with active agents, surface functionalization with nanoparticles, and encapsulation of functional materials within the nanofibers. Recently, sequentially combining fabrication of nanofibers with 3D printing was reported by our group and the synergistic process offers fiber membrane functionalities having the mechanical strength offered by 3D printed scaffolds. Recent developments in electrospun nanofibers are enumerated here with special emphasis on biomedical technologies, chemical and biological sensing, and energy harvesting aspects in the context of e-textile and tactile sensing. Energy harvesting offers significant advantages in many applications, such as biomedical technologies and critical infrastructure protection by using the concept of finite state machines and edge computing. Many other uses of devices using electrospun nanofibers, either as standalone or conjoined with 3D printed materials, are envisaged. The focus of this review is to highlight selected novel applications in biomedical technologies, chem.-bio sensing, and broadly in energy harvesting for use in internet of things (IoT) devices. The article concludes with a brief projection of the future direction of electrospun nanofibers, limitations, and how synergetic combination of the two processes will open pathways for future discoveries.
