We solve the nucleon's wave functions from the eigenstates of the light-front quantum chromodynamics Hamiltonian for the first time, using a fully relativistic and nonperturbative approach based on light-front quantization, without an explicit confining potential. These eigenstates are determined for the three-quark, three-quark-gluon, and three-quark-quark-antiquark Fock representations, making them suitable for low-resolution probes. From this, we calculate the nucleon's quark and gluon matter densities, helicity, and transversity distributions, which show qualitative consistency with experimental extractions. We also compute the contributions of quark and gluon helicity to the proton spin and the tensor charges. The obtained light-front wave functions represent a significant advancement towards a unified description of various hadron distribution functions in both longitudinal and transverse momentum space.

Within the basis light-front quantization (BLFQ) framework, we evaluate the gluon chiral-odd generalized parton distributions (GPDs) inside the proton at zero skewness. We employ the light-front wave functions of the proton obtained from a light-front quantized Hamiltonian with quantum chromodynamics input using BLFQ. Our investigation encompasses both the valence Fock sector with three constituent quarks and an additional sector containing three quarks and a dynamical gluon. We analyze the gluon GPDs in the momentum space as well as in the transverse position space. We further present the gluon's generalized form factors derived from the Mellin moments of its chiral-odd GPDs. Using the proton transverse spin sum rule, we also present the $x$-dependence of the angular momentum carried by the polarized gluon and determine the relative contributions of quarks and the gluon to the transversity asymmetry., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

We continue our investigation of the stress within a strongly coupled scalar nucleon, and now dissect the gravitational form factors into contributions from its constituents, the (mock) nucleon and the (mock) pion. The computation is based on a non-perturbative solution of the scalar Yukawa model in the light-front Hamiltonian formalism with a Fock sector expansion including up to one nucleon and two pions. By employing the ``good currents" $T^{++}_i$, $T^{+-}_i$ and $T^{12}_i$, we extract the full set of gravitational form factors $A_i$, $D_i$, $\bar c_i$ without the contamination of the spurious form factors, and free of uncanceled UV divergences. With these results, we decompose the mass of the system into its constituents and compute the matter and mechanical radii, gaining insights into the strongly coupled system., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Based on our recent analysis of the hadronic matrix element of the stress-energy tensor in covariant light front dynamics, we extract the charmonium gravitational form factor $D(Q^2)$ from shear stress $T^{12}$. This is in contrast to our recent work using the (light-front) energy density $T^{+-}$. Indeed, by comparing these two currents, we identify terms that are responsible for the violation of the current conservation. Numerical results based on basis light-front quantization show that the violation effects are small and the $D$-term extracted from the two currents are close to each other, hence validating our previous work using $T^{+-}$., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We investigate the singly virtual transition form factor (TFF) for the $\pi^0\to\gamma^*\gamma$ process in the space-like region using the hard-scattering formalism within the Basis Light-Front Quantization (BLFQ) framework. This form factor is expressed in terms of the perturbatively calculable hard-scattering amplitudes (HSAs) and the light-front wave functions (LFWFs) of the pion. We obtain the pion LFWFs by diagonalizing the light-front QCD Hamiltonian, which is determined for its constituent quark-antiquark and quark-antiquark-gluon Fock sectors with a three-dimensional confinement. We employ the HSAs up to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the quark-antiquark Fock sector and leading order (LO) in the quark-antiquark-gluon Fock sector. The NLO correction to the TFF in the quark-antiquark Fock sector is of the same order as the LO contribution to the TFF in the quark-antiquark-gluon Fock sector. We find that while the quark-antiquark-gluon Fock sector has minimal effect in the large momentum transfer ($Q^2$) region, it has a noteworthy impact in the low-$Q^2$ region. Our results show that, after accounting for both Fock sectors, the TFF within the BLFQ framework aligns well with existing experimental data, particularly in the low $Q^2$ region., Comment: The manuscript consists of 9 pages, 1 table, and 3 figures

We develop a novel, systematic input scheme for many-boson Hamiltonians in order to solve field theory problems within the light-front Hamiltonian formalism via quantum computing. We present our discussion of this input scheme based on the light-front Hamiltonian of the two-dimensional $\phi ^4$ theory. In our input scheme, we employ a set of quantum registers, where each register encodes the occupation of a distinct boson mode as binaries. We squeeze the boson operators of each mode and present the Hamiltonian in terms of unique combinations of the squeezed boson operators. We design the circuit modules for these unique combinations. Based on these circuit modules, we block encode the many-boson Hamiltonian utilizing the idea of quantum walk. We demonstrate our input scheme by solving the low-lying spectra of the Hamiltonian utilizing the IBM Qiskit quantum simulator. We can incorporate the input scheme in this work with the input scheme for many-fermion Hamiltonians; they jointly offer new pathways to solving the structure and dynamics of field theory problems on future fault-tolerant quantum computers., Comment: 15 pages (including references and appendix), 2 tables, 2 figures. We present a new method for computing the lowest few eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors of a nuclear many-body Hamiltonian represented in a truncated configuration interaction subspace, i.e., the no-core shell model (NCSM). The method uses the hierarchical structure of the NCSM Hamiltonian to partition the Hamiltonian as the sum of two matrices. The first matrix corresponds to the Hamiltonian represented in a small configuration space, whereas the second is viewed as the perturbation to the first matrix. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the first matrix can be computed efficiently. Perturbative corrections to the eigenvectors of the first matrix can be obtained from the solutions of a sequence of linear systems of equations defined in the small configuration space. These correction vectors can be combined with the approximate eigenvectors of the first matrix to construct a subspace from which more accurate approximations of the desired eigenpairs can be obtained. We call this method a Subspace Projection with Perturbative Corrections (SPPC) method. We show by numerical examples that the SPPC method can be more efficient than conventional iterative methods for solving large-scale eigenvalue problems such as the Lanczos, block Lanczos and the locally optimal block preconditioned conjugate gradient (LOBPCG) method. The method can also be combined with other methods to avoid convergence stagnation.

We investigate the role of a dynamical gluon in the pion within the Basis Light-Front Quantization (BLFQ) framework and compare it with the solution of the Minkowski space Bethe-Salpeter equation, focusing on contributions beyond the valence state. Particularly in BLFQ, we identify the effect on the pion structure of the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking by the enhancement of the spin-flip matrix element, through the $|q\bar qg\rangle$ component of the light-front wave function and associated gluon parton distribution function (PDF). We explicitly show an enhancement of the low-$x$ contribution in the quark PDF associated with the large spin-flip matrix element, necessary to provide the $\pi-\rho$ mass splitting., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

In this paper, we evaluate the electromagnetic and gravitational form factors as well as the corresponding generalized parton distributions of the electron using the Basis Light-front Quantization approach to QED. We compare our results with those from light-front perturbation theory. We adopt a novel basis with its scale depending on the constituents' longitudinal momentum fraction. We show that this basis improves convergence of the form factors with increasing basis dimension, compared to that calculated in the original basis with fixed scale. These results both validate the BLFQ approach and provide guidance for its efficient implementation in solving light-front Hamiltonian mass eigenstates for more complex systems in QED and QCD.

The calculation of nuclear electromagnetic sum rules by directly diagonalizing the nuclear Hamiltonian in a large basis is numerically challenging and has not been performed for $A>2$ nuclei. With the significant progress of high performance computing, we show that calculating sum rules using numerous discretized continuum states obtained by directly diagonalizing the ab initio no-core shell model Hamiltonian is achievable numerically. Specifically, we calculate the $^{4}$He electric dipole ($E1$) polarizability, that is an inverse energy weighted sum rule, employing the Daejeon16 $NN$ interaction. We demonstrate that the calculations are numerically tractable as the dimension of the basis increases and are convergent. Our results for the $^{4}$He electric dipole polarizability are consistent with the most recent experimental data and are compared with those of other theoretical studies employing different techniques and various interactions.

We compute the gravitational form factors $A_i$, $D_i$ and $\bar c_i$ of the scalar Yukawa theory using both the light-cone and covariant perturbation theory at the one-loop level. The light-cone formalism provides a potential approach to access these form factors beyond the perturbative regime. However, unlike the covariant formulation, the Poincar\'e symmetry on the light cone is not manifest. In this work, we use perturbation theory as a benchmark to extract the gravitational form factors from the light-front energy-momentum tensor. By comparing results on and off the light cone, we identify $T^{++}, T^{+a}, T^{+-}, T^{12}$ as the "good currents" that are properly renormalized and can be used to extract the gravitational form factors., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures. Everything gravitates and they do so through the energy-momentum tensor (EMT). However, there is no consensus on how to define the EMT of a hadron, e.g. the proton, the fundamental building blocks of the visible world. In this work, we show that the hadronic EMT can be cast into the form of relativistic continua with spin. The fluid-like form allows a clear identification of the proper hadronic energy density, pressure and shear. A spin tensor contribution is also identified without the reference to the total angular momentum operator, in alignment with the recent development in relativistic spin hydrodynamics. The hadronic EMT is related to the quantum expectation value of the EMT operator through the convolution with the hadronic wavepacket. To factorize out the hadronic EMT, different multipole expansion schemes are explored. Within the Basis Light-Front Quantization framework, we systematically investigate the subleading twist (twist-3) transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) of the proton beyond the Wandzura-Wilczek (WW) approximation. The subleading twist TMDs are not independent and can be decomposed into twist-2 and genuine twist-3 terms from the equations of motion. The latter involves quark-quark-gluon correlations and contains interferences between two light-front Fock sectors, $|qqq\rangle$ and $|qqqg\rangle$, which are usually neglected in the WW approximation., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

We demonstrate, in the context of a scalar version of the chiral effective field theory, that the multi-sea quark contribution to the nucleon is significant and highly non-trivial in sharp contrast to the prediction of perturbation theory. The non-perturbative calculation is performed in the Fock sector dependent renormalization scheme on the light front, in which the non-perturbative renormalization is incorporated. The calculation suggests that a fully non-perturbative calculation of the chiral EFT is needed to obtain a robust result to be compared with the recent experimental measurement of flavor asymmetry in the proton., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the gravitational form factors of charmonium. Our method is based on a Hamiltonian formalism on the light front known as basis light-front quantization. The charmonium mass spectrum and light-front wave functions were obtained from diagonalizing an effective Hamiltonian that incorporates confinement from holographic QCD and one-gluon exchange interaction from light-front QCD. We proposed a quantum many-body approach to construct the hadronic matrix elements of the energy momentum tensor $T^{++}$ and $T^{+-}$, which are used to extract the gravitational form factors $A(Q^2)$ and $D(Q^2)$. The obtained form factors satisfy the known constraints, e.g. von Laue condition. From these quantities, we also extract the energy, pressure and light-front energy distributions of the system. Quantum computing provides a promising approach for solving the real-time dynamics of systems consist of quarks and gluons from first-principle calculations that are intractable with classical computers. In this work, we start with an initial problem of the ultra-relativistic quark-nucleus scattering and present an efficient and precise approach to quantum simulate the dynamics on the light front. This approach employs the eigenbasis of the asymptotic scattering system and implements the compact scheme for basis encoding. It exploits the operator structure of the light-front Hamiltonian of the scattering system, which enables the Hamiltonian input scheme that utilizes the quantum Fourier transform for efficiency. It utilizes the truncated Taylor series for the dynamics simulations. The qubit cost of our approach scales logarithmically with the Hilbert space dimension of the scattering system. The gate cost has optimal scaling with the simulation error and near optimal scaling with the simulation time. These scalings make our approach advantageous for large-scale dynamics simulations on future fault-tolerant quantum computers. We demonstrate our approach with a simple scattering problem and benchmark the results with those from the Trotter algorithm and the classical calculations, where good agreement between the results is found., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures. We compute the gravitational form factors (GFFs) and study their applications for the description of the mechanical properties such as the pressure, shear force distributions, and the mechanical radius of the proton from its light-front wave functions (LFWFs) based on basis light-front quantization (BLFQ). The LFWFs of the proton are given by the lowest eigenvector of a light-front effective Hamiltonian that incorporates a three-dimensional confining potential and a one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling between the constituent quarks solved in the valence Fock sector. We find acceptable agreement between our BLFQ computations and the lattice QCD for the GFFs. Our $D$-term form factor also agrees well with the extracted data from the deeply virtual Compton scattering experiments at Jefferson Lab, and the results of different phenomenological models. Gluon transverse-momentum dependent distributions (TMDs) are very important for revealing the internal structure of the proton. They correspond to a variety of experiments and are among the major tasks of the future electron-ion colliders. In this paper, we calculate the T-even gluon TMDs at the leading twist within the Basis Light-front Quantization framework. We employ the light-front wave functions of the proton obtained from a light-front quantized Hamiltonian with Quantum Chromodynamics input determined for its valence Fock sector with three constituent quarks and an additional Fock sector, encompassing three quarks and a dynamical gluon, with a three-dimensional confinement. After obtaining the numerical results we investigate the properties of gluon TMDs by checking whether they satisfy the Mulders-Rodrigues inequalities and investigate the correlations between transverse and longitudinal degrees of freedom. With their connection to unintegrated gluon distributions in mind, we further investigate the limiting behaviours of gluon TMDs in the small-$x$ and large-$x$ regions., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

We obtain all the leading-twist quark generalized parton distributions (GPDs) inside the proton at nonzero skewness within the basis light-front quantization framework. We employ the light-front wave functions of the proton from a light-front quantized Hamiltonian in the valence Fock sector consisting of a three-dimensional confinement potential and a one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling. We find that the qualitative behaviors of our GPDs are similar to those of other theoretical calculations. We further examine the GPDs within the boost-invariant longitudinal coordinate, $\sigma=\frac{1}{2} b^- P^+$, which is identified as the Fourier conjugate of the skewness. We present an efficient quantum circuit for block encoding pairing Hamiltonian often studied in nuclear physics. Our block encoding scheme does not require mapping the creation and annihilation operators to the Pauli operators and representing the Hamiltonian as a linear combination of unitaries. Instead, we show how to encode the Hamiltonian directly using controlled swap operations. We analyze the gate complexity of the block encoding circuit and show that it scales polynomially with respect to the number of qubits required to represent a quantum state associated with the pairing Hamiltonian. We also show how the block encoding circuit can be combined with the quantum singular value transformation to construct an efficient quantum circuit for approximating the density of states of a pairing Hamiltonian. We present a novel input model for general second-quantized Hamiltonians of relativistic or non-relativistic many-fermion systems. This input model incorporates the fermionic anticommutation relations, particle number variations, and respects the symmetries of the Hamiltonian. Based on our input model, we propose a hybrid framework for spectral calculations on future quantum hardwares. We provide explicit circuit designs and the associated gate cost and circuit depth. We demonstrate our framework by solving the low-lying spectra of ${^{42}}Ca$ and ${^{46}}Ca$. We propose a hybrid quantum-classical framework to solve the elastic scattering phase shift of two well-bound nuclei in an uncoupled channel. Within this framework, we develop a many-body formalism in which the continuum scattering states of the two colliding nuclei are regulated by a weak external harmonic oscillator potential with varying strength. Based on our formalism, we propose an approach to compute the eigenenergies of the low-lying scattering states of the relative motion of the colliding nuclei as a function of the oscillator strength of the confining potential. Utilizing the modified effective range expansion, we extrapolate the elastic scattering phase shift of the colliding nuclei from these eigenenergies to the limit when the external potential vanishes. In our hybrid approach, we leverage the advantage of quantum computing to solve for these eigenenergies from a set of many-nucleon Hamiltonian eigenvalue problems. These eigenenergies are inputs to classical computers to obtain the phase shift. We demonstrate our framework with two simple problems, where we implement the rodeo algorithm to solve the relevant eigenenergies with the IBM Qiskit quantum simulator. The results of both the spectra and the elastic scattering phase shifts agree well with other theoretical results., Comment: We welcome comments!

We solve for the $\rho$-meson's wave functions from a light-front QCD Hamiltonian determined for its constituent quark-antiquark and quark-antiquark-gluon Fock components, with a three-dimensional confinement using basis light-front quantization. From this, we obtain the leading-twist valence quark's parton distribution functions and transverse momentum-dependent parton distributions inside the $\rho$-meson. These results are qualitatively consistent with those of other models. We investigate E1 radiative transitions within charmonium in a relativistic approach based on light-front QCD. In quantum field theory, two sets of processes are pure E1: $\chi_{c0} \to J/\psi \gamma$ ($\psi\to \chi_{c0}\gamma$) and $h_c \to \eta_c\gamma$ ($\eta_c' \to h_c\gamma$), both involving the $P$-wave charmonia. We compute the E1 radiative decay widths as well as the corresponding transition form factors of various processes including those involving $2P$ states. These observables provide an access to the microscopic structures of the $P$-wave charmonium. We show that our parameter-free predictions are in excellent agreement with the experimental measurements as well as lattice simulations whenever available., Comment: Values of decay widths are provided in the supplementary file

In this work, we propose a method to compute the gravitational form factor $D(Q^2)$ in holographic QCD by exploiting the remarkable correspondence between semi-classical light-front QCD and semi-classical field theories in wrapped spacetime in 5D. The use of light-front holography bridges physics at large $Q^2$ as attained in light-front QCD and physics at small $Q^2$ where the coupling to scalar and tensor fields, i.e. glueballs, are dominant. We investigate the twist-3 generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for the valence quarks of the proton within the basis light-front quantization (BLFQ) framework. We first solve for the mass spectra and light-front waved functions (LFWFs) in the leading Fock sector using an effective Hamiltonian. Using the LFWFs we then calculate the twist-3 GPDs via the overlap representation. By taking the forward limit, we also get the twist-3 parton distribution functions (PDFs), and discuss their properties. Our prediction for the twist-3 scalar PDF agrees well with the CLAS experimental extractions.

We develop a non-perturbative approach to simulating scattering on classical and quantum computers, in which the initial and final states contain a fixed number of composite particles. The construction is designed to mimic a particle collision, wherein two composite particles are brought in contact. The initial states are assembled via consecutive application of operators creating eigenstates of the interacting theory from vacuum. These operators are defined with the aid of the M{\o}ller wave operator, which can be constructed using such methods as adiabatic state preparation or double commutator flow equation. The approach is well-suited for studying strongly coupled systems in both relativistic and non-relativistic settings. For relativistic systems, we employ the language of light-front quantization, which has been previously used for studying the properties of individual bound states, as well as for simulating their scattering in external fields, and is now adopted to the studies of scattering of bound state systems. For simulations on classical computers, we describe an algorithm for calculating exact (in the sense of a given discretized theory) scattering probabilities, which has cost (memory and time) exponential in momentum grid size. Such calculations may be interesting in their own right and can be used for benchmarking results of a quantum simulation algorithm, which is the main application of the developed framework. We solve for the gluon generalized parton distributions (GPDs) inside the proton, focusing specifically on leading twist chiral-even GPDs. We investigate the gravitational form factors of a strongly coupled scalar theory that mimic the interaction between the nucleon and the pion. The non-perturbative calculation is based on the light-front Hamiltonian formalism. We renormalize the energy-momentum tensor with a Fock sector dependent scheme. We also systematically analyze the Lorentz structure of the energy-momentum tensor and identify the suitable hadron matrix elements to extract the form factors, avoiding the contamination of spurious contributions. We verify that the extracted form factors obey momentum conservation as well as the mechanical stability condition. From the gravitational form factors, we compute the energy and pressure distributions of the system. Furthermore, we show that utilizing the Hamiltonian eigenvalue equation, the off-diagonal Fock sector contributions from the interaction term can be converted to diagonal Fock sector contributions, yielding a systematic non-perturbative light-front wave function representation of the energies and forces inside the system., Comment: 30 pages, 21 figures

The internal image of the proton is unveiled by examining the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at zero skewness, within the basis light-front quantized environment. Several distributions emerge when a quark is sampled with different currents depending upon the helicity arrangements of the active quark and the proton target. We investigate six of the eight leading-twist proton GPDs of the valence quarks, the helicity conserving distributions $(H, E, \tilde{H})$ and the helicity non-conserving $(H_T,E_T,\tilde{H}_T)$ distributions at skewness set to zero ($\zeta=0$). We consider purely transverse momentum transfer and, hence, obtain results describe only the proton's two-dimensional structure in the transverse plane. We present the Mellin moments of these distribution functions, where the first moment produces a form factor and the second Mellin moments help extract the information on partonic contributions to the hadronic angular momentum. We compare our results for the Mellin moments with those from lattice QCD and other approaches where available. The Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) is one of the most often-used NP-Hard problems in computer science to study the effectiveness of computing models and hardware platforms. In this regard, it is also heavily used as a vehicle to study the feasibility of the quantum computing paradigm for this class of problems. In this paper, we tackle the TSP using the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) approach by formulating it as an optimization problem. By adopting an improved qubit encoding strategy and a layerwise learning optimization protocol, we present numerical results obtained from the gate-based digital quantum simulator, specifically targeting TSP instances with 3, 4, and 5 cities. We focus on the evaluations of three distinctive QAOA mixer designs, considering their performances in terms of numerical accuracy and optimization cost. Notably, we find a well-balanced QAOA mixer design exhibits more promising potential for gate-based simulators and realistic quantum devices in the long run, an observation further supported by our noise model simulations. Furthermore, we investigate the sensitivity of the simulations to the TSP graph. Overall, our simulation results show the digital quantum simulation of problem-inspired ansatz is a successful candidate for finding optimal TSP solutions., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables

We present new microscopic effective shell-model interactions in the valence sd shell, obtained from the modern Daejeon16 nucleon-nucleon potential using no-core shell-model (NCSM) wave functions of 18F at Nmax=6 (total oscillator quanta of excitation) model space and the Okubo-Lee-Suzuki transformation. First, we explore the convergence properties of our calculations and show that the excitation energies of states in 18F, characterized by the largest valence-like configurations, are reasonably converged and the lowest states are in sensible agreement with experiment. Then, we investigate the monopole properties of that interaction in comparison with the phenomenological universal sd-shell interaction, USDB, and with the previously derived interaction at Nmax=4. Theoretical binding energies and low-energy spectra of the O isotopes, as well as low-energy spectra of a selection of $sd$-shell nuclei, are presented. We conclude that the use of larger-space NCSM wave functions leads to a noticeable improvement in the quality of the derived effective interaction. We propose monopole modifications of the Daejeon16 centroids which further improve the agreement with experiment throughout the sd shell, as demonstrated by a compilation of spectra contained in Supplemental Material., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1909.00628

Under the basis light-front quantization framework, we investigate the leading-twist transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) for $\Lambda$ and $\Lambda_c$ baryons, the spin-1/2 composite systems consisting of two light quarks ($u$ and $d$) and a $s/c$ quark. We evaluate the TMDs using the overlaps of the light-front wave functions in the leading Fock sector, which are obtained by solving the light-front eigenvalue equation. We also study the spin densities of quarks in momentum space for various polarizations. In the same model, we compare the TMDs of the strange and charmed baryons and the proton by reviewing their spin structures in the quark model and the probabilistic interpretations of their TMDs., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

We propose a framework for computing the structure and dynamics for second-quantized many-nucleon Hamiltonians on quantum computers. We develop an oracle-based Hamiltonian input model that computes the many-nucleon states and nonzero Hamiltonian matrix elements of the many-nucleon system. With our Fock-state based input model, we show how to implement the sparse matrix simulation algorithms to calculate the dynamics of the second-quantized many-nucleon Hamiltonian. Based on the dynamics simulation methods, we also present the methodology for structure calculations of the many-nucleon system. In this work, we provide an explicit circuit design of our input model of the second-quantized Hamiltonian within a direct encoding scheme that maps the occupation of each available single-particle state in the many-nucleon state to the state of specific qubit in a quantum register. We analyze our method and provide the asymptotic cost in computing resources for structure and dynamics calculations of many-nucleon systems. Chiral effective field theory ($\chi$EFT) provides a framework for obtaining internucleon interactions in a systematically improvable fashion from first principles, while also providing for the derivation of consistent electroweak current operators. In this work, we apply consistently derived interactions and currents towards calculating the magnetic dipole moments of the $A=3$ systems Triton and Helium-3. We focus here on LENPIC interactions obtained using semilocal coordinate-space (SCS) regularization. Starting from the momentum-space representation of the LENPIC $\chi$EFT vector current, we derive the SCS-regularized magnetic dipole operator up through N2LO. We then carry out no-core shell model calculations for Triton and Helium-3 systems, using the SCS LENPIC interaction at N2LO in $\chi$EFT, and evaluate the magnetic dipole moments obtained using the consistently derived one-nucleon and two-nucleon electromagnetic currents. As anticipated by prior results with $\chi$EFT currents, the current corrections through N2LO provide improved, but not yet complete, agreement with experiment for the Triton and Helium-3 magnetic dipole moments., Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures

In preparation for the 2023 NSAC Long Range Plan (LRP), members of the Nuclear Science community gathered to discuss the current state of, and plans for further leveraging opportunities in, QIST in NP research at the Quantum Information Science for U.S. Nuclear Physics Long Range Planning workshop, held in Santa Fe, New Mexico on January 31 - February 1, 2023. The workshop included 45 in-person participants and 53 remote attendees. The outcome of the workshop identified strategic plans and requirements for the next 5-10 years to advance quantum sensing and quantum simulations within NP, and to develop a diverse quantum-ready workforce. The plans include resolutions endorsed by the participants to address the compelling scientific opportunities at the intersections of NP and QIST. We compute the structure function, transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs), and generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for the physical photon from the light-front quantum electrodynamics (QED) Hamiltonian, determined for its constituent bare photon and electron-positron Fock components within the Basis Light-Front Quantization framework. After performing nonperturbative renormalization, we obtain a good quality description of the perturbative QED properties of the photon, as well as good agreement with the experimental data for the photon's structure function. We also investigate the TMDs and GPDs of the space-like and the time-like virtual photon by incorporating a nonzero photon mass., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures

We investigate the twist-$3$ transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) of the pion with basis light-front quantization. The twist-3 TMDs are not independent and can be decomposed into twist-$2$ and genuine twist-$3$ terms from the equations of motion (EOM). We compute the TMDs from the resulting light-front wave functions obtained by diagonalizing the light-front QCD Hamiltonian, determined for pion's constituent quark-antiquark and quark-antiquark-gluon Fock sectors, with three-dimensional confinement. We also obtain the twist-3 parton distribution functions (PDFs) and show that they preserve the sum rule, which affirms the robustness of our approach. This is the first time that theoretical predictions are made for subleading twist structures of the pion containing interference terms between two light-front Fock sectors., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

This paper presents a comprehensive review of both the theory and experimental successes of Quantum Chromodynamics, starting with its emergence as a well defined theory in 1972-73 and following developments and results up to the present day. Topics include a review of the earliest theoretical and experimental foundations; the fundamental constants of QCD; an introductory discussion of lattice QCD, the only known method for obtaining exact predictions from QCD; methods for approximating QCD, with special focus on effective field theories; QCD under extreme conditions; measurements and predictions of meson and baryon states; a special discussion of the structure of the nucleon; techniques for study of QCD at high energy, including treatment of jets and showers; measurements at colliders; weak decays and quark mixing; and a section on the future, which discusses new experimental facilities or upgrades currently funded. We solve for the light-front wave functions of the nucleon from a light-front quantum chromodynamics (QCD) effective Hamiltonian with three-dimensional confinement. We obtain solutions using constituent three quarks combined with three quarks and one gluon Fock components. The resulting light-front wave functions provide a good quality description of the nucleon's quark distribution functions following QCD scale evolution. We present the effects from incorporating a dynamical gluon on the nucleon's gluon densities, helicity distribution and orbital angular momentum that constitutes the nucleon spin sum rule.

We employ the non-perturbative time-dependent basis function (tBF) approach to investigate in detail the sub-Coulomb barrier scattering of the deuteron projectile on the $^{208}$Pb target. Specifically, we treat the target as a quiescent source of a strong external Coulomb field that induces higher-order effects in electric-dipole excitations of the deuteron projectile including the population of states not accessible through direct electric-dipole transitions from the ground state of the deuteron. We calculate the electric-dipole polarizability of the deuteron and elastic scattering observables for comparison with experimental data. With no adjustable parameters, the tBF approach provides good agreement with experimentally available differential cross-section ratios. The dependence of these measured quantities on nucleon-nucleon interactions is investigated. The effects of the polarization potential on the scattering observables are also presented in this work. We obtain the masses, the electromagnetic properties, and the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of $\Lambda$, $\Lambda_c$, and their isospin triplet baryons, i.e, $\Sigma^0$, $\Sigma^+$, $\Sigma^-$ and $\Sigma_c^0$, $\Sigma_c^+$, $\Sigma_c^{++}$ from a light-front effective Hamiltonian in the leading Fock sector in the basis light-front quantization framework. The light-front wave functions of these baryons are given by the eigenstates of the effective Hamiltonian consisting of a three-dimensional confinement potential and a one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling. The masses of these baryons in our approach are in the experimental range while isospin-dependent mass differences are too small. Meanwhile, the electromagnetic properties are in agreement with the available experimental data, the lattice QCD simulations, and the other theoretical calculations. We also present the gluon and the sea quark PDFs, which we generate dynamically from the QCD evolution of the valence quark distributions., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures

We revisit Minkowski's lost legacy on relativistic electromagnetism in order to resolve long-standing puzzles over the charge distribution of relativistic systems like hadrons. Hadrons are unique relativistic electromagnetic systems characterized by their comparable size and Compton wavelength $r_h \sim \lambda_C$. As such, it was recently realized that the traditional Sachs definition of the charge distribution based on a non-relativistic formula is invalid. We explain that this is the same problem pursued by Lorentz, Einstein and others, on the electromagnetism of a moving body. We show how various charge distributions proposed in hadronic physics naturally emerge as the multipole moment densities in the macroscopic theory of relativistic electromagnetism., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures; published on Physics Letters B

We obtain the leading-twist valence quark transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMD PDFs) for the proton within the basis light-front quantization (BLFQ) framework. Our results are consistent with lattice QCD calculations and our previous results for the collinear limit. We also obtain consistency with the Soffer-type bounds. Within our approach, we find that six T-even TMDs in the leading twist are all independent of each other, and previously found model-dependent relations do not hold. This is a promising sign that our results are representative of future, more extensive treatments of QCD. Furthermore, we obtain a non-trivial $ x $-dependence of the $ \left<(p^\perp)^2\right> $ and some consistency with the Gaussian ansatz but only in the small $ (p^\perp)^2 $ region. Those features suggest our results may be a useful alternative in future experimental extractions., Comment: 6 figures, 11 pages

We present a calculation of the radiative capture cross section $p(n,\gamma )d$ in the low-energy range, where the $M1$ reaction channel dominates. Employing the LENPIC nucleon-nucleon interaction up to the fifth order (N4LO) that is regularized by the semi-local coordinate space regulators, we obtain the initial and final state wave functions, and evaluate the phase shifts of the scattering state and deuteron properties. We derive the transition operator from the chiral effective field theory up to the next-to-next-to leading order (N2LO), where we also regularize the transition operator using regulators consistent with those of the interactions. We compute the capture cross sections and the results show a converging pattern with the chiral-order expansion of the nucleon-nucleon interaction, where the regulator dependence of the results is weak when higher-order nucleon-nucleon interactions are employed. We quantify the uncertainties of the cross-section results due to the chiral-order truncation. The chirally complete and consistent cross-section results are performed up to N2LO and they compare well with the experiments and other theoretical predictions., Comment: 13 pages, 3 tables, 1 figure

The lightest meson, the pion, features two faces -- one is the elementary Goldstone boson of QCD and the other is the structured bound state of quarks and gluons. To accommodate both in a single light-front wave function in the valence space, we obtain a sum rule by analyzing the conserved axial-vector current and the general structures of the wave functions. Using an analytic model motivated by holography, we show this sum rule is consistent with requirements of chiral symmetry breaking in AdS/QCD. Within this model, we find a remarkable feature of the pion, namely that the density is mostly uniform inside its radius; furthermore, we obtain good agreement with the experimental pion form factor at spacelike momenta., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures. We survey a set of proposed light-front models for confinement in the valence quark sector of the mesons and portray similarities as well as differences. We present the spectroscopies for the light mesons that result from a selection of longitudinal confinement forms. We study the unpolarized and the helicity dependent generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for the valence quarks of the proton in both momentum space and position space within the basis light-front quantization (BLFQ) framework. The GPDs for the valence quarks are computed from the eigenvectors of a light-front effective Hamiltonian in the valence Fock sector consisting of a three-dimensional confinement potential and a one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling. Employing these GPDs, we obtain the spatial distributions of quark angular momentum inside the proton. In our BLFQ approach, we explore various definitions of angular momentum density and illustrate the differences between them arising from terms that integrate to zero. We solve for the light-front wave functions (LFWFs) of the physical photon from the eigenvectors of the light-front quantum electrodynamics (QED) Hamiltonian with the aim to determine its bare photon and electron-positron Fock components. We then employ the resulting LFWFs to compute the transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) and the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the photon. The TMDs are found to be in excellent agreement with the lowest-order perturbative results calculated using the electron-positron quantum fluctuation of the photon. We study all-charm tetraquarks in the front form of Hamiltonian dynamics using the many-body basis function approach known as basis light-front quantization. The model Hamiltonian contains transverse and longitudinal confining potentials and a one-gluon-exchange effective potential. We calculate masses of two-charm-two-anticharm states focusing on the lowest state. We also calculate two-quark and four-quark estimates of meson-meson breakup threshold. The results suggest that the lowest two-charm-two-anticharm state is not a tightly bound tetraquark. We discuss implications of the cluster decomposition principle for theories formulated on the light front and present our treatment of identical particles together with color-singlet restrictions on the space of quantum states., Comment: 35 pages, 2 figures
