4. A Survey of the Interactions between Psychiatry Residency Programs and the Pharmaceutical Industry

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The authors report a survey of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatry Residency Training (AADPRT) on interactions between the pharmaceutical industry and psychiatry residency programs. METHODS: American Association of Directors of Psychiatry Residency Training membership was anonymously surveyed by e-mail and by paper distribution at the 2002 annual meeting. RESULTS: Twenty-seven percent of AADPRT members participated. Lunches for residents were the most common interaction, reported by 93% of programs, nearly all of which permitted literature and gifts to be distributed. Only 4% required faculty to be present. Retreats (27%) and travel funds (34%) were sponsored less frequently. One third of programs had written policies governing these interactions, but half of respondents did not know if their parent institutions had such policies. A minority of programs (40%) had formal didactic instruction for residents on this topic. Support for more information, direction, and teaching was widespread. CONCLUSIONS: The authors recommend more structured teaching and the establishment of formal program and institutional policies to govern these interactions.

Abstract

Previous studies have reported an association between the use of methylphenidate (a stimulant drug) and suppression of growth in children. Methylphenidate is commonly used to treat hyperactivity in children, and the persistence of this condition in some individuals has led to continued use of methylphenidate treatment into adolescence. The effect of this drug on the growth patterns of adolescents is unknown. Measurements were taken in 31 adolescents, (six girls and 25 boys) who where treated with methylphenidate for over six months. In each subject, measurements of height and weight were taken at two intervals. To eliminate any seasonal influences on growth, the baseline measurements were taken randomly over the course of the year. When expected measurements were compared with the observed measurements for height and weight, no significant differences were observed. These results are contrary to the findings of other studies which suggest that methylphenidate has a growth suppressant effect. This study suggests that early adolescent growth is not sensitive to methylphenidate. When administered in customary doses, methylphenidate appears to have no adverse effect on the growth of adolescents. However, these results are preliminary and additional research with larger samples over longer time periods is strongly recommended. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)
