IntroductionLa neurochirurgie moderne a été introduite et a commencé à se développer dans les pays africains à partir de 1951. En Côte d’Ivoire, il n’existe aucune donnée dans la littérature sur l’histoire de la neurochirurgie.ObjectifFaire l’historique de la neurochirurgie en Côte d’IvoireMéthodesEtude transversale rétro-prospective à visée descriptive de l’évolution de la neurochirurgie en Côte d’Ivoire depuis les premières pratiques jusqu’à ce jour, à partir d’une enquête, d’une revue de littérature et d’interviews.RésultatsQuatre périodes ont été identifiées. La première, qui commence en 1972, s’identifie au Docteur Mélaine Kouamé KANGAH, premier neurochirurgien. La pathologie traumatique crânio-cérébrale et les méningiomes étaient alors pris en charge. La deuxième s’étend de l’ouverture du service de Neurochirurgie de Yopougon à Abidjan en 1990 jusqu’en 1998. Les Professeurs Jean Jacques Santini, Vincent BA ZEZE, « père » de la neurochirurgie ivoirienne, Gilbert DECHAMBENOIT et Guy VARLET marquent cette époque qui connait l’essor de la neurochirurgie ivoirienne. Puis la troisième période de stagnation, jusqu’en 2012, qui cependant voit se diversifier les compétences, s’ouvrir le Diplôme d’Etudes Spécialisées en 2007, se créer une unité pédiatrique en 2008, et la Société Ivoirienne de Neurochirurgie en 2009. La quatrième période est caractérisée par la reprise des progrès au niveau des ressources humaines et matérielles, avec l’ouverture des services de Bouaké puis Yamoussoukro, et l’essor de la pratique privée. Mais beaucoup reste à faire au plan de l’équipement et de la formation.ConclusionDes progrès notables ressortent de cette étude. Les perspectives se résument au projet de création d’un institut de neuroscience et d’autres services de neurochirurgie dans les grandes régions du pays. The first, which began in 1972, is identified with Doctor Mélaine Kouamé KANGAH, the first neurosurgeon. Craniocerebral traumatic pathology and meningiomas were then treated. The second period extended from the opening of the Neurosurgery Department of Yopougon in Abidjan in 1990 until 1998. Professors Jean Jacques SANTINI, Vincent BA ZEZE, « father » of Ivorian neurosurgery, Gilbert DECHAMBENOIT and Guy VARLET marked this period which saw the development of Ivorian neurosurgery. Then the third period of stagnation, until 2012, which however saw the diversification of skills, the opening of the Diploma of Specialized Studies in 2007, the creation of a pediatric unit in 2008, and the Ivorian Society of Neurosurgery in 2009. The fourth period was characterised by the resumption of progress in terms of human and material resources, with the opening of the Bouaké and Yamoussoukro services, and the development of private practice. But much remains to be done in terms of equipment and training.ConclusionNotable progress has been made in this study. The prospects are summarised in the project to create an institute of neuroscience and other neurosurgery services in the major regions of the country.
