Abstract

Numerous domains, in fundamental research as well as in applications, require the study of reactions induced by neutrons with energies from few MeV up to few tens of MeV. Reliable measurements also are necessary to improve the evaluated databases used by nuclear transport codes. This energy range covers a large number of topics like transmutation of nuclear waste, design of future fission and fusion reactors, nuclear medicine or test and development of new detectors. A new facility called Neutrons For Science (NFS) is being built for this purpose on the GANIL site at Caen (France). NFS is composed of a pulsed neutron beam for time-of-flight facility as well as irradiation stations for cross-section measurements. Neutrons will be produced by the interaction of deuteron and proton beams, delivered by the SPIRAL-2 linear accelerator, with thick or thin converters made of beryllium or lithium. Continuous and quasi-mono-energetic spectra will be available at NFS up to 40 MeV. In this fast energy region, the neutron flux is expected to be up to 2 orders of magnitude higher than at other existing time-of-flight facilities. In addition, irradiation stations for neutron-, proton- and deuteron-induced reactions will allow performing cross-section measurements by the activation technique. After a description of the facility and its characteristics, the experiments to be performed in the short and medium term will be presented.

Abstract

Originally designed as a new nuclear reactor monitoring device, the Nucifer detector has successfully detected its first neutrinos. We provide the second shortest baseline measurement of the reactor neutrino flux. The detection of electron antineutrinos emitted in the decay chains of the fission products, combined with reactor core simulations, provides an new tool to assess both the thermal power and the fissile content of the whole nuclear core and could be used by the Inter- national Agency for Atomic Energy (IAEA) to enhance the Safeguards of civil nuclear reactors. Deployed at only 7.2m away from the compact Osiris research reactor core (70MW) operating at the Saclay research centre of the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), the experiment also exhibits a well-suited configuration to search for a new short baseline oscillation. We report the first results of the Nucifer experiment, describing the performances of the 0.85m3 detector remotely operating at a shallow depth equivalent to 12m of water and under intense background radiation conditions. Based on 145 (106) days of data with reactor ON (OFF), leading to the detection of an estimated 40760 electron antineutrinos, the mean number of detected antineutrinos is 281 +- 7(stat) +- 18(syst) electron antineutrinos/day, in agreement with the prediction 277(23) electron antineutrinos/day. Due the the large background no conclusive results on the existence of light sterile neutrinos could be derived, however. Abstract

Double differential cross sections (DDCS) for light charged particles (proton, deuteron, triton, 3He, alpha) and neutrons produced by a proton beam impinging on a 238U target at 62.9 MeV were measured at the CYCLONE facility in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium). These measurements have been performed using two independent experimental set-ups ensuring neutron (DeMoN counters) and light charged particles (Si-Si-CsI telescopes) detection. The charged particle data were measured at 11 different angular positions from 25 degrees to 140 degrees allowing the determination of angle differential, energy differential and total production cross sections.

Abstract

Spallation neutron production in proton induced reactions on Al, Fe, Zr, W, Pb and Th targets at 1.2 GeV and on Fe and Pb at 0.8, and 1.6 GeV measured at the SATURNE accelerator in Saclay is reported. The experimental double-differential cross-sections are compared with calculations performed with different intra-nuclear cascade models implemented in high energy transport codes. The broad angular coverage also allowed the determination of average neutron multiplicities above 2 MeV. Abstract

paper 9272; International audience; Nuclear reactors emit a huge amount of electronic antineutrinos, arising from the fission product decay. Reactor antineutrinos thus posess unique features that place them as a potential new safeguards tool for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Indeed, they carry outside the core the direct picture of its isotopic fission rates, thus opening the possibility of a remote, non-intrusive and tamperproof reactor monitoring. Sophisticated simulations of reactors and their associated antineutrino flux and energy spectrum have been developed to predict the neutrino signature of the fuel burnup and of a diversion. The only user-defined inputs driving the time evolution of the isotopic composition of the core are the initial fuel composition, the refueling scheme, and the thermal power. The evolution of the antineutrino flux and energy spectrum with the fuel burnup, as well as the effect of neutron capture on various nuclei are taken into account. Non-proliferation scenarios and burnup monitoring with antineutrinos have been studied using these tools for PWR and CANDU reactors. A full core simulation of an N4-PWR will be presented in a first part. Gross unveiling diversion scenarios using a PWR have been simulated in order to test the ability of the antineutrino probe. A channel of a Heavy Water Reactor (CANDU 600) loaded with natural Uranium, has been simulated also in order to provide a first hint of what antineutrino detection would bring to the monitoring of such on-line refueled reactor which are maintained in a steady state through quasi-continuous refueling. Very simple proliferation scenario studies with CANDU reactors, based on several channel calculations, made at various fuel dwell-times, will be shown in a second part. In both cases, the response of a Nucifer-like detector placed at 25m from the core to these scenarios has been studied.

Abstract

Double differential cross sections (DDCS) for light charged particles (proton, deuteron, triton, 3He, alpha) and neutrons produced by a proton beam impinging on a 238U target at 62.9 MeV were measured at the CYCLONE facility in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium). These measurements have been performed using two independent experimental set-ups ensuring neutron (DeMoN counters) and light charged particles (Si-Si-CsI telescopes) detection. The charged particle data were measured at 11 different angular positions from 25 degrees to 140 degrees allowing the determination of angle differential, energy differential and total production cross sections.

Abstract

A facility for detection of scattered neutrons in the energy interval 50–130 MeV, SCAttered Nucleon Detection AssembLy (SCANDAL), has recently been installed at the 20–180 MeV neutron beam facility of The Svedberg Laboratory, Uppsala. It is primarily intended for studies of elastic neutron scattering, but can be used for (n,p) and (n,d) reaction experiments as well. The performance of the spectrometer is illustrated in measurements of the (n,p) and (n,n) reactions on 1H and 12C. In addition, the neutron beam facility is described in some detail.

Abstract

A large volume (4 l) liquid NE213 scintillator detector for neutrons in the energy range up to 800 MeV has been calibrated using a high accuracy tagging technique at En=21,34,50,60 and 100 MeV. The experiment is described together with a discussion of the accuracy in the absolute efficiency calibration. Results are presented on total and differential detection efficiencies along with information on the underlying nuclear reactions causing the detector response, including both charged particles and γ-rays. The present results complement previous measurements for the same detector, so that an efficiency calibration now exists over an energy range of En=2–800 MeV. The empirical results are compared with a calculated energy dependence of the detector response to neutrons. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

The neutrons for science (NFS) facility is a component of SPIRAL-2, the new superconducting linear accelerator built at GANIL in Caen (France). The proton and deuteron beams delivered by the accelerator will allow producing intense neutron fields in the 100 keV-40 MeV energy range. Continuous and quasi-mono-kinetic energy spectra, respectively, will be available at NFS, produced by the interaction of a deuteron beam on a thick Be converter and by the 7Li(p,n) reaction on thin converter. The pulsed neutron beam, with a flux up to two orders of magnitude higher than those of other existing time-of-flight facilities, will open new opportunities of experiments in fundamental research as well as in nuclear data measurements. In addition to the neutron beam, irradiation stations for neutron-, proton- and deuteron-induced reactions will be available for cross-sections measurements and for the irradiation of electronic devices or biological cells. NFS, whose first experiment is foreseen in 2018, will be a very powerful tool for physics, fundamental research as well as applications like the transmutation of nuclear waste, design of future fission and fusion reactors, nuclear medicine or test and development of new detectors.

47. Absolute calibration method for laser megajoule neutron yield measurement by activation diagnostics.

Abstract

The laser megajoule (LMJ) and the National Ignition Facility (NIF) plan to demonstrate thermonuclear ignition using inertial confinement fusion (ICF). The neutron yield is one of the most important parameters to characterize ICF experiment performance. For decades, the activation diagnostic was chosen as a reference at ICF facilities and is now planned to be the first nuclear diagnostic on LMJ, measuring both 2.45 MeV and 14.1 MeV neutron yields. Challenges for the activation diagnostic development are absolute calibration, accuracy, range requirement, and harsh environment. At this time, copper and zirconium material are identified for 14.1 MeV neutron yield measurement and indium material for 2.45 MeV neutrons. A series of calibrations were performed at Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA) on a Van de Graff facility to determine activation diagnostics efficiencies and to compare them with results from calculations. The CEA copper activation diagnostic was tested on the OMEGA facility during DT implosion. Experiments showed that CEA and Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) diagnostics agree to better than 1% on the neutron yield measurement, with an independent calibration for each system. Also, experimental sensitivities are in good agreement with simulations and allow us to scale activation diagnostics for the LMJ measurement range.
