- Abstract
This two-volume set highlights the importance of Iberian shipbuilding in the centuries of the so-called first globalization (15th to 18th), in confluence with an unprecedented extension of ocean navigation and seafaring and a greater demand for natural resources (especially timber), mostly oak (Quercus spp.) and Pine (Pinus spp.). The chapters are framed in a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary line of research that integrates history, Geographic Information Sciences, underwater archaeology, dendrochronology and wood provenance techniques. This line of research was developed during the ForSEAdiscovery project, which had a great impact in the academic and scientific world and brought together experts from Europe and America. The volumes deliver a state-of-the-art review of the latest lines of research related to Iberian maritime history and archaeology and their developing interdisciplinary interaction with dendroarchaeology. This synthesis combines an analysis of historical sources, the systematic study of wreck-remains and material culture related to Iberian seafaring from the 15th to the 18th centuries, and the application of earth sciences, including dendrochronology. The set can be used as a manual or work guide for experts and students, and will also be an interesting read for non-experts interested in the subject., Volume 1 focuses on the history and archaeology of seafaring and shipbuilding in the Iberian early modern world, complemented by case studies on timber trade and supply for shipbuilding, analysis of shipbuilding treatises, and the application of Geographic Information Systems and Databases (GIS) to the study of shipwrecks., Volume 2 focuses on approaches to the study of shipwrecks including a synthesis of dendro-archaeological results, current interdisciplinary case studies and the specialist study of artillery and anchors.

BOARD games , *GAMEBOARDS , *GAMBLING , *MIDDLE Ages , *CASTLES - Abstract
Despite prescriptions against gambling, the Islamic contexts of al-Andalus have shown not a few testimonies of the so-called board games (tāb), which oppose two people. Also in the Castle of Silves, a place occupied at least since Late Antiquity, with periods of cultural flourishing between the 8th and the mid-13th century, emerged, in the Muslim levels excavated directed by one of us (RVG), game boards, in portable stone supports, but also fixed, engraved on floors. Discoid game marks, made in stone, ceramic or bone, with different dimensions, as other game pieces made in those same materials were also exhumed, which would have been part of board games. Although numerous game boards are known, it is not uncommon for those, from the Middle Ages or earlier, to which a safe chronology can be attributed, which does not occur with the examples from Castelo de Silves, which come from strata and precise locations. Playing has pedagogics, competitive, inter-active, strategic, ethics, creative, ludic, emotional or cognitive, but also oracular, even ritual implications, and are a cultural identifier, given it handles with symbols, and can often constitute a metaphor for aspects of human life. [EN]: Under the works carried out to re-qualify the inner premises of Silves Castle (Program Silves Polis), in the area denominated South sector, an important faunal assemblage dated to the Islamic period (9th/10th – 13th centuries) was recovered. Fish, bird and mammal were especially abundant. Bird remains studied in this paper come mainly from level 2. Such level, dated to the Almohad period, showed the highest concentration of faunal remains. Further to the more frequent domestic and wild birds – chicken (Gallus sp.), geese (Anser sp.), pigeons (Columba livia and C. palumbus), partridge (Alectoris rufa), mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) and passerines, it was possible to identify the occurrence of less expected species, such as crane (Grus grus), peacock (Pavo cristatus) and cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo). The taphonomic analysis of the remains evidences how the processing and consumption of the carcasses was. Aspects related to eating and taste behaviour sometimes described in historical sources are confirmed. The diversity of identified species contributes to enlarge our knowledge on the palatine environment of Islamic Silves., [PO]: Nas intervenções arqueológicas inerentes à requalificação do interior do Castelo de Silves (Programa Silves Polis), no designado Sector Sul, foi recuperado um apreciável conjunto arqueofaunístico do periodo islâmico (sécs.

- Abstract
In the Early Modern Age (XVI-XVII centuries), the construction of oceanic ships was essential for the development of cultural encounters in what became the Era of Discovery and European expansion. This is the case of the Iberian empires. They impose unprecedented demands on Iberian forests for the supply of lumber. Forestry and maritime power were inextricably linked. This project will address this issue. The prerequisite for such an approach is to combine the knowledge derived from Humanities and Life Sciences.
