Abstract This study aimed to test the efficacy of different silica-based toothpastes with or without chitosan, as a method of cleaning the acrylic surfaces of denture prostheses. Acrylic resin specimens were prepared to evaluate surface roughness and gloss (n = 10), and Candida albicans adhesion/inhibition (n = 2). Two toothpastes with different degrees of abrasiveness were used: Colgate (CT) and Elmex (EX), with or without 0.5% chitosan (Ch) microparticles (CTCh or EXCh, respectively). The negative control was brushed with distilled water. Brushing was simulated with a machine. Surface roughness and gloss were analyzed before and after brushing. Candida albicans incidence/inhibition was tested qualitatively to determine the acrylic resin antifungal activity. The roughness and gloss data were analyzed with a generalized linear model, and the Kruskal Wallis and Dunn tests, respectively (α = 5%). Brushing with toothpastes increased roughness and reduced gloss, compared with the negative control (p

Early-stage knee osteoarthritis is often suitable for treatment with high tibial osteotomy (HTO). This is an effective joint-preserving treatment, resulting in good postoperative outcomes. To overcome the limitations of traditional HTO, the surgical technique and correction accuracy can be enhanced by personalised procedures using three-dimensional digital planning and metal additive manufacturing, The purpose of this clinical trial study was to evaluate the three-dimensional accuracy of a new personalised HTO procedure, using modern imaging techniques, 3D modelling, and distance map analysis (DMA). Twenty-five patients were treated with the personalised HTO procedure. Before surgery and after 6 months, they underwent clinical evaluation scoring, radiographic imaging, and computed-tomography scanning to generate morphological models. Specifically, preoperative tibia models were used to plan the tibia correction and the design and position of the fixation plate. Preoperative, planned, and postoperative models were imported in computer-aided and designing software (Geomagic ControlTM 2014, 3D Systems, Rock Hill, SC, USA) for DMA implementation to assess geometrical differences between model surfaces. A very good reproduction of the planned tibia morphology was achieved postoperatively (average differences between −0.9 mm and 1.4 mm). DMA values associated with fixation-plate deformation were less than 1 mm, similar to those for plate-to-tibia surface-contour matching. Overall, personalised digitally planned HTO utilising three-dimensional printed surgical guides and plates enables accurate planned correction and plate placement.

Abstract Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum are two closely related protozoans that infect a wide range of animals, including birds. However, the occurrence of N. caninum and T. gondii in seabirds is unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the presence of T. gondii and N. caninum DNA in tissue samples of seabirds. Tissue samples of the pectoral muscles, heart, and brain were collected from 47 birds along the coastline of Santa Catarina State, SC, Brazil. The DNA was extracted from the tissues and screened using nested-PCR (nPCR) targeting internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1). T. gondii DNA was detected in tissues from seven seabirds (7/47, 14.8%), kelp gull (Larus dominicanus) (5/21), and Manx shearwater (Puffinus puffinus) (2/8). N. caninum DNA was detected in tissues of nine seabirds (9/47, 19.1%), the kelp gull (L. dominicanus) (4/21), Manx shearwater (P. puffinus) (2/8), neotropic cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) (1/4), brown booby (Sula leucogaster) (1/5), and white-chinned petrel (Procellaria aequinoctialis) (1/1); however, no co-infection was observed. In conclusion, this study showed the circulation of N. caninum and T. gondii in seabirds along the coastline of Santa Catarina State. Further studies are required to clarify the role of these birds in the epidemiology of neosporosis and toxoplasmosis.

ABSTRACT: This study described the pathological aspects of a metastatic grade II simple tubulopapillary mammary carcinoma in a free-living senile female maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus). The diagnosis was based on histopathological findings of malignant epithelial cells arranged in tubular and papillary patterns, with marked anisocytosis and anisokaryosis and metastases to regional lymph nodes, lungs, parietal pleura, and pericardium. Also associated to positive immunolabeling of neoplastic cells for Cytokeratin AE1/AE3 and negative for P63, Calponin and Cox-2, added to the cell proliferation index of 26.8%. The findings demonstrated that free-ranging wild canids develop mammary neoplasms similar to those observed in domestic canids.

Unity is a central concept in the Critique of Pure Reason, since it is only through the unifying act of our spontaneous faculties that an experience can emerge, according to Kant. However, the faculty of reason brings forth a different unity than that of the understanding: Kant characterizes the former as a collective unity, while the latter as a distributive unity. This article aims to explain the meaning of these terms, with reference to the Nachlass on metaphysics and the writings on right where Kant employs them in a clearer manner. This explanation can provide a basis to understand the difference between the faculty of understanding and the faculty of reason within the first Critique, a difference rather neglected by scholars, who have focused mainly on Kant’s distinction between sensibility and understanding.

Abstract Acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) is the leading cause of hospitalization in patients aged 65 years or older, and most of them present with congestion. The use of hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) may increase the response to loop diuretics. To evaluate the effect of adding HCTZ to furosemide on congestion and symptoms in patients with ADHF. This randomized clinical trial compared HCTZ 50 mg versus placebo for 3 days in patients with ADHF and signs of congestion. The primary outcome of the study was daily weight reduction. Secondary outcomes were change in creatinine, need for vasoactive drugs, change in natriuretic peptides, congestion score, dyspnea, thirst, and length of stay. Fifty-one patients were randomized—26 to the HCTZ group and 25 to the placebo group. There was an increment of 0.73 kg/day towards additional weight reduction in the HCTZ group (HCTZ: − 1.78 ± 1.08 kg/day vs placebo: − 1.05 ± 1.51 kg/day; p = 0.062). In post hoc analysis, the HCTZ group demonstrated significant weight reduction for every 40 mg of intravenous furosemide (HCTZ: − 0.74 ± 0.47 kg/40 mg vs placebo: − 0.33 ± 0.80 kg/40 mg; p = 0.032). There was a trend to increase in creatinine in the HCTZ group (HCTZ: 0.50 ± 0.37 vs placebo: 0.27 ± 0.40; p = 0.05) but no significant difference in onset of acute renal failure (HCTZ: 58% vs placebo: 41%; p = 0.38). No differences were found in the remaining outcomes. Adding hydrochlorothiazide to usual treatment of patients with acute decompensated heart failure did not cause significant difference in daily body weight reduction compared to placebo. In analysis adjusted to the dose of intravenous furosemide, adding HCTZ 50 mg to furosemide resulted in a significant synergistic effect on weight loss. ANTENNAS (Electronics) ,SPHINGIDAE ,TENSILE tests ,DEFORMATIONS (Mechanics) ,MANDUCA - Abstract
To probe its environment, the flying insect controllably flexes, twists, and maneuvers its antennae by coupling mechanical deformations with the sensory output. We question how the materials properties of insect antennae could influence their performance. A comparative study was conducted on four hawkmoth species: Manduca sexta, Ceratomia catalpae, Manduca quinquemaculata , and Xylophanes tersa. The morphology of the antennae of three hawkmoths that hover while feeding and one putatively non-nectar-feeding hawkmoth (Ceratomia catalpa) do not fundamentally differ, and all the antennae are comb-like (i.e., pectinate), markedly in males but weakly in females. Applying different weights to the free end of extracted cantilevered antennae, we discovered anisotropy in flexural rigidity when the antenna is forced to bend dorsally versus ventrally. The flexural rigidity of male antennae was less than that of females. Compared with the hawkmoths that hover while feeding, Ceratomia catalpae has almost two orders of magnitude lower flexural rigidity. Tensile tests showed that the stiffness of male and female antennae is almost the same. Therefore, the differences in flexural rigidity are explained by the distinct shapes of the antennal pectination. Like bristles in a comb, the pectinations provide extra rigidity to the antenna. We discuss the biological implications of these discoveries in relation to the flight habits of hawkmoths. Flexural anisotropy of antennae is expected in other groups of insects, but the targeted outcome may differ. Our work offers promising new applications of shaped fibers as mechanical sensors. Insect antennae are blood-filled, segmented fibers with muscles in the two basal segments. The long terminal segment is muscle-free but can be flexed. Our comparative analysis of mechanical properties of hawkmoth antennae revealed a new feature: antenna resistance to bending depends on the bending direction. Our discovery replaces the conventional textbook scenario considering hawkmoth antennae as rigid rods. We showed that the pectinate antennae of hawkmoths behave as a comb in which the bristles resist bending when they come together. This anisotropy of flexural resistance offers a new mode of environmental sensing that has never been explored. The principles we found apply to other insects with non-axisymmetric antennae. Our work offers new applications for shaped fibers that could be designed to sense the flows. [Display omitted] [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background The regular intake of fiber generates numerous health benefits. However, the efficacy depends on the duration of consumption and the ingested dose. Studies investigating the optimal dose are of interest to enable the inclusion of fiber in the routine treatment of diabetic patients. Objective We aimed to evaluate the effects of different doses of β-glucan (BG—isolated from Saccharomyces cerevisiae), in comparison to n-3 supplement, on the inflammatory and metabolic parameters of Wistar rats induced to diabetes by streptozotocin. Methods Forty animals were randomly divided into six groups receiving 0 mg/kg, 10 mg/kg, 20 mg/kg, or 40 mg/kg BG daily for 4 weeks or fish oil derivative [1000 mg/kg of omega-3 fatty acids (n-3)] for the same period. One additional group was composed of healthy controls. Serum metabolic and immunological parameters were evaluated by colorimetric and ELISA assays respectively. Histopathological analysis of the liver, small intestine and pancreas were also conducted. Significant changes due to BG intake were set into regression models with second-degree fit in order to estimate the optimal BG dose to achieve health benefits. Results The animals that ingested BG had lower food and water intake (p 0.05) among all groups. These reductions were already seen with the lowest dose of 10 mg/kg. On average, the serum levels of the hepatic enzymes ALT and AST were 40% and 60% lower in the BG groups in comparison to diabetic animals without treatment (better results than n-3 group). The group receiving 40 mg/kg reached similar values of healthy controls for ALT; whereas the same result occurred from the dose of 10 mg/kg for AST. The ideal dose, estimated from the mean of all metabolic parameters was approximately 30 mg/kg/day. Regarding the immunological profile, TNF-α significantly decreased in the BG groups compared to controls (p 0.05). No histological changes were found in the pancreas, liver, or intestine due to treatment among diabetic animals. Conclusions BG significantly reduced blood glucose as well as serum total cholesterol, LDL-c and TG. There was a hepatoprotective effect due to the reduction in ALT and AST and a reduction in TNF-α, indicating a modulation of the immune response. In general, BG effects were better than n-3 supplement (or at least comparable) depending on the dose.

ABSTRACT: Bluetongue is an infectious, non-contagious disease that affects domestic and wild ruminants, caused by a virus from the Orbivirus genus, Reoviridae family, transmitted by arthropod vectors of the Culicoides genus. This paper aims to be the first serological survey of bluetongue in sheep from the Meso-regions of Campo das Vertentes and South and Southeast of Minas Gerais. Samples were collected from sheep from different properties. The serum samples were submitted to Agar Gel Immunodiffusion (AGID) and competitive Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (cELISA). 303 serum samples were submitted to AGID and cELISA. In these samples, 164 (54.13%) were positive in the AGID technique, and 171 (56.44%) positive in the cELISA technique, with an almost perfect agreement between the techniques (kappa index = 0.887). In all visited properties, positive animals have been found in the herd. Animals acquired from properties of the studied mesoregions were more likely to be positive in IDGA and cELISA tests than animals acquired from properties in other regions of Brazil (p

ABSTRACT Background: The surgical treatment of hyperhidrosis by thoracic sympathectomy has brought, in addition to symptomatic relief for many, its main adverse effect: compensatory or reflex sweating. The clipping technique in place of the sympathetic nerve section gave rise to the hope of reversibility, but the positive results showed to be quite divergent, evidencing the academic deficiency regarding the study of this phenomenon. Aim: To observe micro and macroscopic damage caused by the polymer clip on sympathetic nerve of rabbits seven days after their clipping and the findings after three weeks of clip removal. Method: In this experimental study, 20 rabbits were divided into two groups of 10, group 1 (clipping) and group 2 (de-clipping). The right cervical sympathetic nerve of all animals was clamped with polymeric clip, and in group 2 the nerve was unclipped seven days later. Group 1 rabbits were induced to death on the 7th postoperative day, and group 2 on the 21st after removal of the polymer clip. Macroscopic variables were: clip appearance, presence of discontinuity lesion, infection and adhesions around the nerve. H&E was used in the evaluation of the phases and degree of the inflammatory process and presence of necrosis, and picrosirius red F3BA for quantification of collagen. Results: The cervical sympathetic nerve was intact, without necrosis or infection in all animals of the experiment; there were adhesions in both groups, being minimal in eight animals of each group and moderate or intense in two; the clip was completely closed in all animals at the 7th postoperative day; the inflammatory process shown was chronic, with monomorphonuclear predominance. There was no significant difference between groups regarding the intensity the inflammatory process, but the amount of collagen type I and type III was significantly higher in group 2. Conclusions: The injury caused by the polymer clip on the sympathetic nerve may be reversible, allowing functional return in the areas involved in the simulated cervical sympathectomy. Clipping of the cervical sympathetic nerve using a polymer clip does not cause discontinuity injury.

Abstract: The main goal of this theoretically oriented paper is to lay out the particular view of the interface between syntax and phonology in the theory of the Parallel Architecture (PA) as formulated by Jackendoff (1997, 2002, 2007). Even though it doesn’t have its own phonological component, this theory took the developments of non-linear phonology in the 1970s as a starting point (GOLDSMITH, 1976; LIBERMAN; PRINCE, 1977; MCCARTHY, 1982). The central idea in the PA is to distribute the complexity of the grammar among relatively independent tiers, in order to unburden syntax, which took an exaggerated explanatory role in mainstream generative theories (CULICOVER; JACKENDOFF, 2005). According to Culicover and Jackendoff (2005), in liberating this component from the responsibility of explaining all relevant linguistic phenomena, it may be possible to envision a Simpler Syntax. After clarifying some general characteristics of the PA and its relationship to non-linear phonological theories, the paper will focus on what this model has to say about the interface between syntax and prosody. The paper will illustrate the PA view on this interface through a specific discussion about the nuclear stress rule (CHOMSKY; HALLE, 1968; HALLE; VERGNAUD, 1987). The main idea here is that the conclusions reached by Menuzzi and Mioto (2006), which go against Cinque’s (1993) theory, can be understood as positive evidence for the conception of the syntax-phonology interface suggested in the PA, which grants more autonomy to the phonological component. Keywords: syntax-phonology interface; Simpler Syntax; Parallel Architecture; nuclear stress rule.

The Radical Unacceptability Hypothesis (RUH) has been proposed as a way of explaining the unacceptability of extraction from islands and frozen structures. This hypothesis explicitly assumes a distinction between unacceptability due to violations of local well-formedness conditions—conditions on constituency, constituent order, and morphological form—and unacceptability due to extra-grammatical factors. We explore the RUH with respect to classical islands, and extend it to a broader range of phenomena, including freezing, A′ chain interactions, zero-relative clauses, topic islands, weak crossover, extraction from subjects and parasitic gaps, and sensitivity to information structure. The picture that emerges is consistent with the RUH, and suggests more generally that the unacceptability of extraction from otherwise well-formed configurations reflects non-syntactic factors, not principles of grammar.

In this article, I will provide an account of unexpected reflexivization contrasts (URCs) which have been problematic for analyses of English reflexives since the early days of Generative Grammar (Jackendoff 1969; Postal 1968; Lakoff 1968). These contrasts were the main motivation for introducing thematic conditions on reflexivization (Jackendoff 1972; Wilkins 1988). I will argue that thematically-based accounts are empirically inadequate and that, when the reflexivity-and-chains approach of Reinhart & Reuland (1993) is paired with an enriched conception of compositionality and a theory of logophoric discourse roles, the problem of URCs can be reduced to the more tractable problem of logophoric reflexives. This, however, requires that logophoric reflexives be seen not as exempt, but as tolerable violations of Condition A (Menuzzi 1999). I will argue that these violations, under adequate circumstances (e.g., when they occur within anti-reflexive predicates), give rise to logophoric interpretations. The unexpected reflexivization contrasts turn out to be a byproduct of the particular animacy requirement logophoric expressions place on their antecedents.

In this article, we hope to offer a possible treatment for functional predicates – with a special emphasis on modals – within Jackendoff’s (2002, 2007) and Culicover and Jackendoff’s (2005) Parallel Architecture. We argue the structural complexity which is characteristic of cartographic approaches like Cinque’s (1999, 2006), however descriptively adequate, is not strictly obligatory in light of the data explored in the literature. An alternative treatment is possible as long as one adopts different fundamental assumptions, such as, for instance, the abandonment of the syntax-semantics interface uniformity principle. We attempt to show the Parallel Architecture contains machinery that is sufficiently robust to offer alternative explanations for the behavior of functional predicates. Most of the richness of structure that is apparently requested for the explanation of the behavior of tense and modal markers can be transferred to the interface with semantics, or to semantics itself, which must become a new focus of systematic inquiry. The general conclusion, which can also be useful in executing the Minimalist Program, is that we do not need hierarchy and complexity in the syntactic component (and in UG) in order to deal with the facts surrounding functional predicates in linguistic theory.

Halicephalobus gingivalis is a free-living nematode that occasionally causes infections in horses. We report a rare case of limb fracture of horse caused by infection with H. gingivalis. An 8-year-old mare was referred to the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Lavras with claudication grade 5 of the right hind limb, that had been started 3 months ago. The patient had aseptic arthritis in the tarsal joint and edema that extended to the quartile. The radiographic examination showed punctate osteolysis with exacerbation of bone trabeculation along the calcaneus, talus, proximal epiphysis of the third metatarsal and distal epiphysis of the tibia. Treatment for arthritis was initiated, and the animal showed a slight improvement in limb function. However, 21 days after hospitalization, due to a comminuted fracture of the tibia, it was euthanized. At necropsy, yellowish masses were found from the metatarsal to the tibia, and around the tarsal bones and joint. Similar masses were also found in the left kidney. Numerous nematodes compatible with H. gingivalis were identified. This is the first description of a pathological fracture caused by H. gingivalis infection in an equine limb. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By way of an initial reflection on the origins of grammatical normativism in Brazil and on the influence of European (especially French) culture on the printed media at the dawn of the 20th century, this paper hopes to reveal certain traces of discursive heterogeneity – in the present case, of the “caipira” dialect – in some periodic publications from that time. Based on Mikhail Bakhtin’s notion of “plurilinguism”, we shall argue that these “caipira” texts already presented, even before the advent of modernism, forms of uprising against the dominant normativism.

A área afetada apresentou repigmentação importante.

Modalidade deôntica. Predicados estativos. Traço [±controle]. ,Philology. Linguistics ,P1-1091 ,French literature - Italian literature - Spanish literature - Portuguese literature ,PQ1-3999 - Abstract

Ionophore antibiotics (IA) are drugs used in animals, particularly as coccidiostats and growth promoters. They can cause acute or chronic poisoning, inducing skeletal and / or heart muscle injuries. This paper describes the epidemiological, clinical and pathological aspects of an IA poisoning outbreak in sheep and cattle fed with leftovers from a animal ration factory. Four hours after the access to the contaminated feed, some sheep were found dead and several others were sick. The cattle manifested clinical signs one day after ingestion of the feed, with death 4 to 20 days after clinical onset. The signs consisted of inappetence, weakness, reluctance to move, incoordination, dyspnea, lateral decubitus and death. Of the sheep herd 61 (42.36%), and eight young cattle (24.24% of the lot) died. Two sick sheep were sent to the Veterinary Pathology Sector, Department of Veterinary Medicine of the Federal University of Lavras (SPV/DMV/UFLA). Due to the severity of the clinical condition, both were euthanized. At necropsy were observed pale areas in the muscles, characterized histologically by varying degrees of necrosis and regeneration in skeletal and cardiac muscles. It was performed a chromatographic analysis (HPLC) of a sample of feed, which showed 97.14 mg monensin/kg of feed. The diagnosis was based on epidemiological, clinical, gross and histological findings, and toxicological analysis of the feed used. Although the use of "scan feed mill" seems an economically attractive option for producers it presents risks and is not recommended.

Neosporosis is an important cause of abortion in cattle and information on their genetics and host parasite relationships are desirable. Neospora caninum samples obtained from 24 bovine fetuses from Minas Gerais, were genetically analyzed in part of the rDNA region, coding for rRNAs. Previously, brain, heart, liver, skeletal muscle, lung, kidney, spleen, thymus, lymph nodes, ovary or testis, uterus and skin of the ear were analyzed by conventional histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Of these, eight had lesions compatible in the brain and heart and two also in skeletal muscle and liver. Three brains showed antigen identification in immunohistochemistry. Brain and heart tissues were subjected to DNA extraction for PCR, whose product of 588 bp of ITS-1 region was sequenced in three samples. We obtained 96% similarity with dozens of sequences N. caninum deposited in GenBank. The phylogenetic tree showed great conservation among isolates of N. caninum in this study and those deposited in GenBank, while well-defined and specific branches were generated against other Apicomplexa. PCR for this region is useful as a diagnosis, with good analytical specificity, but the ITS-1 region is not suitable for genetic differentiation intra species because the sequences obtained were identical to the others analyzed.

A Yorkshire Terrier bitch presented hematemesis, abdominal distention, poliuria, and polidipsia. After clinical examination, it was established a clinical suspect of nephropathy. The complementary exams showed normochromic and normocytic anemia and serum concentrations of ureia (306mg/dl) and creatinine (3.6mg/dl) above the references values. At two-dimensional ultrasound hipoechoic and anechoic cystic areas were observed, as well as hiperechogenic renal pattern and corticomedullary ratio loss. At necropsy, the medullary region presented many small cysts in a fibrous connective tissue. Cortical tubulointesticial lesion was responsible to the resulting renal failure. It was established a tubulointersticial nephritis diagnosis.

This case reports a mongrel dog referred to a veterinarian due to tiredness and syncope episodes. Atrial fibrillation and ventricular premature complex were observed during electrocardiographic exam. The anti-arrhythmic treatment was not effective and the dog died from syncope. At necropsy, a mass invading the internal area of the left atrium was evidenced in the base of the heart. The occurrence of chemodectoma was histologically exhibited. Infiltrations in the atrial myocardium caused alterations in the miocites and produced reentrant circuits and/or atrial depolarization ectopic points.

OBJECTIVE: To assess results obtained with the authors' technique of right hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy in living kidney donors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 16 kidney donors who underwent hand-assisted right laparoscopic nephrectomy from February 2001 to July 2004. Among these patients, 7 were male and 9 were female, with mean age ranging between 22 and 58 years (mean 35.75). RESULTS: Surgical time ranged from 55 to 210 minutes (mean 127.81 min) and warm ischemia time from 2 to 6 minutes (mean 3.78 min) with mean intra-operative blood loss estimated at 90.62 mL. There was no need for conversion in any case. Discharge from hospital occurred between the 3rd and 6th days (mean 3.81). On the graft assessment, immediate diuresis was seen in 15 cases (93.75%) and serum creatinine on the 7th post-operative day was 1.60 mg/dL on average. Renal vein thrombosis occurred in 1 patient (6.25%) who required graft removal, and lymphocele was seen in 1 recipient (6.25%). CONCLUSION: Hand-assisted right laparoscopic nephrectomy in living donors is a safe and effective alternative to open nephrectomy. Despite a greater technical difficulty, the procedure presented low postoperative morbidity providing good morphological and functional quality of the graft on the recipient.

OBJECTIVE: Report the authors’ initial experience with hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy technique in renal donors for transplantation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven donors submitted to hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy were retrospectively analyzed from February 2001 to June 2002. Technical aspects of the donor surgery, results, and complications, are discussed, as well as recipient’s complications and outcomes. RESULTS: Among 27 hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomies, left kidney was withdrew in 18 donors (66.6%), and right kidney in 9 (33.3%). The operative time ranged from 55 to 210 minutes (mean 132.7 ± 37.6 min), and the time of hot ischemia ranged from 2 to 11 minutes (mean 4.7 ± 2.5 min), with an estimated mean blood loss during the intraoperative period of 133.3 mL. Conversion to open surgery was necessary for 1 (3.7%) patient due to vascular lesion. In graft evaluation, immediate diuresis was observed in 26 (96.3%) cases, and mean serum creatinine in PO day 7 was 1.5 ± 1.1 mg/dL. Renal vein thrombosis occurred in 1 (3.7%) patient requiring graft removal. Lymphocele was observed in 3 recipients (11.1%), and urinary leakage due to ureteral necrosis in 1 case (3.7%). CONCLUSION: Hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy in living donors is a safe procedure and an effective alternative to open nephrectomy. In this series, the procedure presented low morbidity after surgery providing to the recipient a good morphological and functional quality of the graft.
