Six years after the so-called 'refugee crisis' in 2015, the European Union remains divided on questions of migration and asylum policy. The issue also remains high on the agendas of the USA and Russia, two other key destination countries with immigration from Latin America and the Post-Soviet space. This article presents results from a comparative study of news coverage in 17 countries, focusing on 10 EU member states in Western and Central Eastern Europe (CEE), the USA and Russia. The intensity of coverage was remarkably different, with Hungary's and Germany's media standing out while Russian media displayed relatively low levels of coverage. Individual migrants and refugees were most visible in the two outlets from the USA. Media in CEE countries tended towards a more critical approach than media in Western Europe. However, differences between most countries' pairs of analyzed media outlets indicate a more pluralistic debate than frequently assumed. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

This presentation will review the microbiological and physicochemical characteristics of Portuguese olive oil wastewaters (OOWW) based on data collected over the last 12 years (Eusébio 2011, Eusébio 2007, Eusébio 2005). These OOWW were all originated from the continuous oil extraction process (three-phase system) at diverse mills spread all over Portugal (Alfândega da Fé, Oliveira do Hospital, Santarém, Rio Maior, and Tavira). The most common physicochemical parameters pH, COD, TSS, VSS and total phenols content were determined, as well as the microbiological indicators, total aerobic heterotrophic bacteria, yeasts and molds (CFU/ml). Molecular characterization of OOWW bacterial consortia was also achieved using temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TGGE) to identify the most abundant members. Lignin is an abundant non-toxic amorphous natural polymer. Nowadays it is available a great variety and large amounts of technical lignins as by-products from the pulp and paper industries. Some successful biotechnological applications of enzymatically modified lignins are described in the literature, namely for the production of lignin based copolymers, binders for wood composites, chelating agents, compositions for treating porous materials, coatings, paintings and others. From a new species from Bjerkandera genus which exhibits high decolourisation activity on Poly R-478 and Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR) dyes, was isolated, purified and identified the main enzyme responsible for Remazol Brilliant Blue R dye decolourisation. Such an enzyme is able to oxidise manganese, as well as VA and DMP in manganese-independent reactions; the enzyme substrate range for oxidation of several phenolic and non-phenolic aromatic compounds was determined. This enzyme was tested for transformation of a lignin fraction obtained from straw pulping. Characterisation by gel filtration chromatography of the evolution of the molecular mass distribution of the lignin fragments generated by said enzyme indicated that this enzyme is able to interact directly with lignin in the absence of other mediators.

Mineral deficiencies are common during the seedling growth in forestry nurseries, as well as during the initial establishment of the plantations. The aim of this work was to study the effects of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and iron deficiencies in two Mediterranean hardwood species: Quercus suber L. and Ceratonia siliqua L. The test was made in hydroponic liquid culture, using solutions lacking N, P, K or Fe and a control solution. The test lasted 139 days for Quercus suber and 190 days for Ceratonia siliqua, and was developed with 50% of shade. During this period, morphological attributes (height, dry weight of aerial part and root) and physiological attributes (relative chlorophyll content and nutrient concentration in leaves) were determined, as well as the visible symptoms caused by the respective nutrient deficiencies. Nutrient deficiencies affected morphological and physiological attributes, and in some cases visual symptoms appeared. In addition, other determinations like relative chlorophyll content (SPAD) and nutrient foliar concentration are suggested to assure a correct diagnosis., Las deficiencias minerales son comunes en el cultivo de brinzales de especies forestales en vivero, así como durante el establecimiento inicial de las plantaciones. El presente trabajo tiene por objetivo el estudio de los efectos de las deficiencias de nitrógeno, fósforo, potasio y hierro en dos especies de frondosas mediterráneas: Quercus suber L. y Ceratonia siliqua L. El ensayo se realizó en cultivo hidropónico en medio líquido, utilizando soluciones nutritivas deficientes en N, P, K y Fe y una solución control. El cultivo se mantuvo durante 139 días para Quercus suber y 190 días para Ceratonia siliqua en un umbráculo con 50% de sombra. Durante este periodo se determinaron atributos morfológicos (altura, peso seco de parte aérea y de raíz) y fisiológicos (contenido relativo de clorofila y concentración de nutrientes en hojas), así como los síntomas visibles provocados por las respectivas carencias nutritivas. Las deficiencias nutritivas afectaron a los atributos morfológicos y fisiológicos, y en algunos casos aparecieron síntomas en hojas. No obstante, los síntomas visuales no parecen ser un método de diagnóstico muy preciso para las especies estudiadas, salvo en el caso de la deficiencia de Fe. Las variaciones en el crecimiento y las concentraciones de nutrientes en hojas han mostrado una mayor sensibilidad, por lo que los estudios alométricos y de nutrición pueden representar alternativas más precisas para los estudios nutricionales de especies de frondosas mediterráneas. El contenido relativo de clorofila (SPAD) también puede ser de utilidad en el diagnóstico de algunas de las deficiencias nutritivas, si se calibran sus valores para cada especie.

The effects of nutrient deficiencies on three pine species (Pinus pinaster Ait., Pinus pinea L. y Pinus halepensis Mill.) are studied in this work. Seeds were planted in a mixture of peat and perlita. When the seedlings reached an adequate size, they were transplanted to hydroponic culture and grown for 4 months (April - July, 1998). Nutrient solutions lacking N, P, K, and Fe, and a control solution were used. During this period, morphological attributes (height, diameter, needles length, and dry weight of shoot and root) and physiological attributes (chlorophyll and nutrient content of needles) were measured, as well as visual symptoms produced by the nutrient deficiencies. Differences were observed depending on the lacking nutrient and the pine species. Nutrient deficiencies affected morphological and physiological attributes and caused growth decrease and visual symptoms. Nevertheless, these effects reached different importance depending on the lacking nutrient and pine species. For example, Fe deficiency caused the greatest and quickest effects, whereas K deficiency hardly affected. Deficiencies effects were greater in shoot growth than in root growth. P. pinaster was the most affected pine species., El objeto del presente trabajo es el estudio de los efectos de las deficiencias de nitrógeno, fósforo, potasio y hierro en tres especies de pinos mediterráneos: Pinus pinaster Ait., Pinus pinea L. y Pinus halepensis Mill. Las semillas se sembraron en turba con perlita y cuando las plántulas alcanzaron un tamaño medio (P. halepensis: 4,7 cm.; P. pinaster: 4,32 cm.; P. pinea: 4,8 cm.) se trasplantaron al cultivo hidropónico en medio líquido, utilizando soluciones nutritivas deficientes en N, P, K y Fe y una solución control. El cultivo se mantuvo durante 4 meses aproximadamente (abril a julio, 1998) en un umbráculo con un 50 % de sombra. Durante este período se determinaron atributos morfológicos (altura, diámetro, longitud de acículas, peso seco de parte aérea y raíz) y fisiológicos (concentración de clorofila y de nutrientes en hoja), así como los síntomas visibles provocados por las respectivas carencias nutricionales. Las deficiencias nutritivas afectaron a los atributos morfológicos y fisiológicos, produciendo en general una disminución del crecimiento y la aparición de síntomas. Sin embargo estos efectos tuvieron distinta magnitud dependiendo del elemento deficiente y de la especie. Así, la deficiencia de Fe es la que provocó efectos mayores y más rápidos, mientras que la de K tuvo muy poco efecto. Asimismo, los efectos fueron mayores sobre el crecimiento de la parte aérea que sobre la raíz. P. pinaster fue la especie más afectada.
