Soil redistribution by water and tillage soil erosion has a profound effect on the spatial variability of soil security indicators. In this study, we assess the potential of estimating long-term soil redistribution rates across a Mediterranean olive orchard catchment using two methods: 239+240Pu and the WaTEM/SEDEM model. Additionally, we identify potential sources of uncertainty explain result discrepancies, and offer guidance for reducing uncertainty. Soil sampling points were taken both in the inter-row areas and below the tree canopies and 239+240Pu inventories were converted into soil redistribution rates using MODERN. Sediment yield data measured in the catchment outlet is used to calibrate WaTEM/SEDEM. The results show a poor agreement between both methods. In this sense, these results indicate that both methods are considerably affected by several sources of uncertainty, both inherent to the methods themselves and related to the specific conditions of the study area. The latter are mainly related to anthropogenic changes in the soil surface related to soil tillage and rill filling practices and an important past land leveling effect. Despite the discrepancies, both methods convey a similar overarching message: soil security and olive production can be highly threatened in the Mediterranean in the next decades. This study demonstrates the potential advantages of combining FRN-based estimates and model simulations and highlights the importance of selecting an appropriate study area in this type of studies and the need to recognize associated uncertainties when estimating soil redistribution rates, whether employing FRN-based or modelling methods.

Purpose The use of fallout radionuclides as proxies for the study of soil redistribution processes in semiarid environments of Southern Spain has been restricted to 137Cs. The potential and limitations of alternative proxies such as 239+240Pu and 210Pbxs should be explored given the expected constrains imposed by the features of the study area. Materials and methods Four soil and one sediment cores were collected in a highly eroded area to test the feasibility of these proxies under demanding conditions. The use of gamma spectrometry and ICP-MS did allow exploring the potential of 210Pbxs and Pu isotopes against the well-established tracer, 137Cs. The activity ratios 239+240Pu/137Cs were explored to evaluate the previous evolution of the sampling sites. Soil redistribution rates were estimated using the model MODERN. Results and discussion Despite all the profles showed intense perturbation, Pu isotopes showed the highest potential thanks to higher sensitivity and sample throughput. The deviations of 239+240Pu/137Cs inventory ratios (0.012–0.158) from the global fallout average (0.026±0.003) suggest that the sediment core was a deposition site involving alternate episodes of topsoil removal and incorporation from diferent sources. The calculated erosion rates ranged 34–43 t ha−1 year−1, being in good agreement for 137Cs and 239+240Pu. 210Pbxs was not used due to low-quality data. Conclusions The use of Pu as a tracer of soil redistribution processes in semiarid areas seems to be promising even under severe erosion conditions. The use of 210Pbxs is not recommended in this area due to its low concentration.

Grasslands are at risk of degradation due to unsustainable management practices and climate change. Here, we review the principal soil quality indicators (SQIs) to evaluate the sustainability of different grassland management practices globally. We discuss the importance of SQI assessment and the Soil Quality Minimum Dataset (MDS) specifically in the context of grasslands. We then review two potential solutions, the first of which is adopting grazing management, whereby sustainable grazing management plans (GMPs) offer great potential. The other solution is the development and adoption of novel grassland species, which may improve either drought resistance or infiltration rates, erosion and flooding. Sustainable grassland soil management can promote ecosystem service delivery and improve the resilience of the entire grassland ecosystem to anthropogenic change.

Orchards have a high potential for carbon sequestration. However, little research is available on the spatial variability at catchment scale and on the difference between the tree area and the lanes. We analyzed theik spatial variability of soil organic carbon stock, SOCstock at 90 cm depth in an 8-ha catchment in Southern Spain with olives on a vertic soil. Results showed higher soil organic carbon concentration, SOC, in the tree area as compared to the lane up to 60 cm depth, but its impact on SOCstock was negligible since it was compensated by the higher soil bulk density in the lane. SOC at different depths was correlated with that in the top 0–5 cm. The overall SOCstock of the orchard was 4.14 kg m−2, ranging between 1.8 and 6.0 kg m−2. This SOCstock is in the mid-lower range of values reported for olive orchards, measured at smaller scale, and similar to those other intensive field crops and agroforestry under comparable rainfall conditions. The spatial variability in SOCstock was correlated to several geomorphological variables: elevation, cumulative upstream area, topographic wetness index, sediment transport index, and tillage erosion. Differences in SOC and SOCstock are driven by the sediment redistribution downslope, mainly by tillage erosion, and higher soil water availability in lower areas allowing higher biomass production. These topographic indexes and the correlation between SOC in the topsoil and SOCstock up to 90 cm should be further explored in other typology of olive orchards for facilitating the mapping of SOCstock.

In an extensive systematic review of the literature on permanent grassland in Europe we show that reducing the management intensity of permanent grasslands and preventing the conversion of permanent grasslands to croplands secures the provision of multiple ecosystem services. The evidence is based on 696 out of 70,456 screened papers.

Permanent grasslands cover 34% of the European Union's agricultural area and are vital for a wide variety of ecosystem services essential for our society. Over recent decades, the permanent grassland area has declined and land use change continues to threaten its extent. Simultaneously, the management intensity of permanent grasslands increased. We performed a systematic literature review on the multifunctionality of permanent grasslands in Europe, examining the effects of land use and management on 19 grassland ecosystem service indicators. Based on the evidence in 696 out of 70,456 screened papers, published since 1980, we found that both land use change and intensification of management decreased multifunctionality. In particular, preventing conversion of permanent grasslands to croplands secured the delivery of multiple ecosystem services. A lower management intensity was associated with benefits for biodiversity, climate regulation and water purification, but impacted the provision of high-quality animal feed. Increasing the number of species in the sward enhanced multifunctionality of permanent grassland without significant trade-offs such as losses in production. Our review covered many aspects of land use, management and ecosystem services, but we also identified areas with no or only few studies. The most prominent gaps were related to comparisons between permanent and temporary grasslands, and effects of management practices on the provision of cultural values, and on erosion and flood control. We suggest that, despite apparent changes in human dietary preferences, the protection of permanent grasslands in Europe must be prioritised. At the same time, considering the need to reduce ruminant livestock's contribution to climate change, the time seems ripe to increase support for low-intensity grassland management to optimise the provision of essential ecosystem services from Europe's permanent grasslands.
