Abstract Background Benign nerve sheath tumors presenting as solitary retroperitoneal masses (RBNSTs) pose a complex diagnostic challenge for multidisciplinary teams regarding differential diagnosis, staging, and treatment planning. This article reviews the role played by different imaging techniques in assessing RBNSTs and elucidates their typical pathological features with a particular emphasis on the correlation between imaging and histological findings. Furthermore, some examples of retroperitoneal tumors that merit consideration in the process of differential diagnosis based on cross-sectional investigations (CSIs) are reported. The correlation between tissue architecture and appearance on imaging can help increase the accuracy of differential diagnosis with other retroperitoneal neoplasms at CSIs. Critical relevance statement This educational review critically examines the correlation between imaging and histological features in solitary retroperitoneal benign nerve sheath tumors, offering valuable insights for improving the accuracy of differential diagnosis in clinical radiology. Key Points RBNSTs are challenging to diagnose because they lack specific radiological features. Differential diagnosis of RBNSTs from other retroperitoneal neoplasms on imaging is complex. Surgical removal of RBNSTs is recommended for an accurate diagnosis. Graphical Abstract

En José de la Quintana, la Hidroeléctrica San José Cooperativa Ltda. es la institución local que brinda el servicio de agua potable a los habitantes comprendidos dentro de su área de influencia. Frente al hecho de que la localidad no está formalmente constituida como comuna, la Hidroeléctrica se erige como uno de los actores fundamentales en la gobernanza del territorio y los recursos, en un marco de rápido crecimiento demográfico, un entorno natural con alto valor de conservación, y un contexto social complejo. Mediante un análisis de esta complejidad, que combinó métodos como la revisión documental, encuestas, entrevistas semiestructuradas, y un taller participativo, se identificaron múltiples desafíos —aunque también oportunidades— para la gestión cooperativista del servicio de agua potable en José de la Quintana. El presente trabajo buscó generar lineamientos tendientes a mejorar la gobernanza del servicio de agua potable basados en la planificación participativa y la cogestión, con vistas a resolver potenciales problemas colectivos y fortalecer la dinámica de la gestión cooperativista del recurso. Ello permitió inferir la posibilidad y necesidad de intervenir, a través de la institución mencionada, en la trama social, política y administrativa del territorio, con la gestión del servicio de agua potable como punto de entrada.

Gastric cancer (GC) is a complex disease with various etiologies. While Helicobacter pylori infection is still one of the leading risk factors for GC, increasing evidence suggests a link between GC and other infective agents such as Epstein Bar Virus (EBV). EBV-associated gastric cancer (EBVaGC) is now recognized as a distinct subgroup of GC, and the complex interactions between the virus and gastric mucosa may influence its development. A recent integrative analysis of the genome and proteome of GC tissues by The Cancer Genome Atlas project has identified EBVaGC as a specific subtype characterized by PIK3CA and ARID1A mutations, extensive DNA hyper-methylation, and activation of immune signaling pathways. These molecular characteristics are markers of the unique molecular profile of this subset of GC and are potential targets for therapy. This review aims to provide an overview of the current knowledge on EBVaGC. It will focus on the epidemiology, clinic-pathological features, and genetic characteristics of EBVaGC. Additionally, it will discuss recent data indicating the potential use of EBV infection as a predictive biomarker of response to chemotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors. The review also delves into potential therapeutic approaches for EBVaGC, including targeted therapies and adoptive immunotherapy, highlighting the promising potential of EBV as a therapeutic target.

Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD), are severe age-related disorders with complex and multifactorial causes. Recent research suggests a critical link between neurodegeneration and the gut microbiome, via the gut–brain communication pathway. This review examines the role of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a gut microbiota-derived metabolite, in the development of AD and PD, and investigates its interaction with microRNAs (miRNAs) along this bidirectional pathway. TMAO, which is produced from dietary metabolites like choline and carnitine, has been linked to increased neuroinflammation, protein misfolding, and cognitive decline. In AD, elevated TMAO levels are associated with amyloid-beta and tau pathologies, blood–brain barrier disruption, and neuronal death. TMAO can cross the blood–brain barrier and promote the aggregation of amyloid and tau proteins. Similarly, TMAO affects alpha-synuclein conformation and aggregation, a hallmark of PD. TMAO also activates pro-inflammatory pathways such as NF-kB signaling, exacerbating neuroinflammation further. Moreover, TMAO modulates the expression of various miRNAs that are involved in neurodegenerative processes. Thus, the gut microbiome–miRNA–brain axis represents a newly discovered mechanistic link between gut dysbiosis and neurodegeneration. MiRNAs regulate the key pathways involved in neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and neuronal death, contributing to disease progression. As a direct consequence, specific miRNA signatures may serve as potential biomarkers for the early detection and monitoring of AD and PD progression. This review aims to elucidate the complex interrelationships between the gut microbiota, trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), microRNAs (miRNAs), and the central nervous system, and the implications of these connections in neurodegenerative diseases. In this context, an overview of the current neuroradiology techniques available for studying neuroinflammation and of the animal models used to investigate these intricate pathologies will also be provided. In summary, a bulk of evidence supports the concept that modulating the gut–brain communication pathway through dietary changes, the manipulation of the microbiome, and/or miRNA-based therapies may offer novel approaches for implementing the treatment of debilitating neurological disorders.

Trimethyl-N-oxide (TMAO) has been linked to peripheral artery disease (PAD). TaurisoloⓇ is a natural, balanced phytocomplex containing resveratrol, quercetin, catechins, procianidins, gallic acid, and caffeic acid. Numerous studies have shown that TaurisoloⓇ reduces the damage of TMAO and exerts a protective effect on endothelial cells (ECs). The aim of this randomized, double-blind, single-center study was to evaluate the effects of TaurisoloⓇ on claudication in patients with PAD (Rutheford grade I, category II, Fontaine Classification: Stage IIA, American Medical Association Whole Person Impairment Classification: Class 0—WPI 0%) in two parallel groups of 31 patients. The primary outcomes were an increase in the pain-free walking distance and the ankle/brachial pressure index at the beginning and at the end of the treatment with Taurisolo. The secondary endpoint was the serum TMAO changes. The claudication distance improved by 14.1% in the Taurisolo group and by 2.0% in the placebo group, while the maximal distance increased by 15.8% and 0.6% only, respectively (both p < 0.05). The TMAO plasma levels decreased from 3.97 ± 2.13 micromole/L to 0.87 ± 0.48 (p < 0.0001) in the treated group. All these changes were highly significant both in univariate mixed models as well as in the adjusted model. Ultimately, TaurisoloⓇ might be an effective intervention to ameliorate intermittent claudication.

RESUMO As propriedades físicas de painéis aglomerados comerciais produzidos com bagaço de cana e madeira foram estudadas. Os testes de absorção de água e inchamento em espessura foram realizados para comparação entre os materiais estudados e entre os tipos de absorção de cada material: total, superficial e lateral. Nos testes de comparação entre painéis de bagaço de cana e painéis de madeira, foi observado que os primeiros apresentaram maiores valores de absorção de água, mas menores inchamentos em espessura. O aglomerado de bagaço de cana apresentou maiores valores de absorção de água lateral. Já no de madeira, a absorção total foi superior após 2 horas, mas igualou-se à absorção superficial após 24 horas.
