24. Assessing hopping developmental level in childhood using wearable inertial sensor devices.

Abstract

Assessing movement skills is a fundamental issue in motor development. Current process-oriented assessments, such as developmental sequences, are based on subjective judgments; if paired with quantitative assessments, a better understanding of movement performance and developmental change could be obtained. Our purpose was to examine the use of inertial sensors to evaluate developmental differences in hopping over distance. Forty children executed the task wearing the inertial sensor and relevant time durations and 3D accelerations were obtained. Subjects were also categorized in different developmental levels according to the hopping developmental sequence. Results indicated that some time and kinematic parameters changed with some developmental levels, possibly as a function of anthropometry and previous motor experience. We concluded that, since inertial sensors were suitable in describing hopping performance and sensitive to developmental changes, this technology is promising as an in-field and user-independent motor development assessment tool. Abstract

Improving performance is a difficult task for élite swimmers. The study of turning, underwater gliding and stroke resumption kinematics may lead to the reduction of the relevant durations. Common video analysis is sometimes inadequate to investigate motor tasks. This work aimed at describing the mentioned phases in top division swimmers using a wearable inertial device. Eight élite swimmers were selected so as to cover all the four swimming styles. The device was positioned on the lower trunk and a 50m trial at the maximum velocity was executed. The angular velocity about each axis was post-processed and both time and kinematic parameters were extracted for each phase, characterizing each swimming style. Strength points of the approach are: simple description of the turning kinematics; possibility to extract performance-related parameters; simplicity of use for the operator; the minimal encumber for the athlete.

Abstract

The aim of this work is the development and the fine tuning of a software package dealing with myoelectric signal processing for movement analysis. The rationale of this work arises from a twofold need: the importance of surface EMG (sEMG) data interpretation in movement analysis and the lack of standardization in signal processing procedures, in spite of a wide use of electromyographic techniques in clinical and research contexts. Therefore, a unified and standardized approach to the information extraction could increase the validity of quantitative assessment, often affected by operator subjective choices. The algorithms inserted in the package arise from the wide experience of the authors in sEMG data processing. The software was designed upon the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and developed by using a waterfall approach based on the tracing of requirements analysis and on interface specification. The design of interfaces was studied with particular attention to user-friendliness and to the insertion of the product in clinical routine environments, and the final product was tested on the basis of typical quality factors regarding object-oriented software.

Abstract

this paper an approach to the detection of discontinuities in signals from mechanical systems based on the use of wavelet transform is presented. Morlet wavelets have been used, by defining an automated procedure to detect phase and amplitude changes of the transform which can be related to variations of the statistical structure of the signals. The results obtained by processing synthetic signals which simulated possible fault conditions, and some first results with real signals are reported. It emerged that the method is capable of detecting the presence of typical discontinuities, and that is susceptible of an automated application.

Abstract

This large-scale study was aimed at evaluating the long-term history of Crohn's disease in a cohort of consecutive patients referred to the Careggi Hospital in Florence from January 1973 to June 1996.A total of 382 patients (187 females, 195 males; mean age of 47 years) were included in our study. The median follow-up was more than 11 years and only 46 patients (12%) had a follow-up of less than 1 year. The main endpoints evaluated in these patients included mortality for any cause, disease-specific mortality, recurrences, and need for surgery. Furthermore, in a subgroup of 130 patients observed during the last 6 months of our study, a more detailed assessment of the disease was carried out in which the distribution of inflammatory, fibrostenosing and fistulizing forms was determined.Our results showed that the disease-specific mortality rate was extremely low (around 3% at 10 years and 5% at 20 years), but the rate of recurrence was approximately 50% at 3 years and more than 60% at 6 years. Surgery was needed in more than 50% of the patients over the 10 years following diagnosis, and the risk of a second operation was of a further 30% within 4 years of the first operation.These epidemiological data emerging from our study are interesting since a large patient population was evaluated and the duration of the follow-up is extremely long.
