Phedimus aizoon has been utilized as a medicinal plant in Asia. However, the production of phytochemical-rich extracts from P. aizoon and the evaluation of their bioactivity are limited. Herein, phytochemical-rich extracts were prepared by ultrasound-assisted extraction of P. aizoon, with a high extraction yield of 16.56%. The extracts contained about 126 mg of phenolics and 31 mg of flavonoids per g of the extracts. The chromatographic analysis (GC-MS and HPLC analyses) identified 19 notable phytochemicals of the extracts from P. aizoon, including pentacosane, hexadecanoic acid, gallic acid, vanillic acid, and quercetin. The gallic acid content of the extracts was relatively high at 2.75 mg/g. The identified compounds are known to have various bioactivities, such as antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal activities. In fact, the prepared extracts exhibited antioxidant activity at 24–28% of that of ascorbic acid. In addition, it showed antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli (Gram-negative bacteria) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive bacteria). Recently, nanoparticles have received considerable attention owing to their efficiency in overcoming the limitations of traditional chemotherapeutic drugs. In our study, we synthesized a vanillic acid nanocomposite using both chitosan and silver nanoparticles, tested its efficacy against lung cancer cells, and analyzed its antimicrobial effects. We used several characterization techniques such as ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to determine the stability, morphological characteristics, and properties of the biosynthesized vanillic acid nanocomposites. Furthermore, the vanillic acid nanocomposites were tested for their antimicrobial effects against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. The data showed that the nanocomposite effectively inhibited microbes, but its efficacy was less than that of the individual silver and chitosan nanoparticles. Moreover, the vanillic acid nanocomposite exhibited anticancer effects by increasing the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins (BAX, Casp3, Casp7, cyt C, and p53) and decreasing the gene expression of Bcl-2. Overall, vanillic acid nanocomposites possess promising potential against microbes, exhibit anticancer effects, and can be effectively used for treating diseases such as cancers and infectious diseases. Vanillin (4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde) is the main component of natural vanilla and a relevant substance in the flavoring and aromatic industries. This study presents a kinetic model to explain both vanillin and vanillic acid concentrations achieved in the alkaline oxidation of pine kraft lignin. Considering that they come from the same precursors, this approach allows an understanding of vanillin production with reaction conditions that minimize the vanillic acid pathway directly from the lignin oligomers, thus maximizing vanillin production. This study involves the effects of oxygen partial pressure, temperature, and the presence or absence of a catalyst (CuSO4 and Fe2(SO4)3 mixture) on the vanillin and vanillic acid yields. An adapted reactor (M/K Systems Inc., Williamstown, MA, USA) with a recirculation and spray liquids system was used in the experiments. The experiments were performed using one liter of a solution of NaOH 2 M and 60 g of lignin. During the lignin oxidation reaction, liquid samples were analyzed at different times (from 0 to 200 min). The oxidation products were quantified by liquid chromatography (HPLC). The catalyzed experiments presented higher maximum vanillin yields than the non-catalyzed ones (39.2–39.6% on nitrobenzene oxidation) achieved at 150 °C. A kinetic model is proposed where the kinetic parameters were estimated using Monte Carlo methods, fitting satisfactorily to the experimental results. Hydrogen-bonded interactions of organic acids play crucial role in many chemical and biochemical processes vital for life's maintenance. They are important as well in the context of secondary aerosol formation in the atmosphere. In the present work, we study the nature of hydrogen-bonded acid–base interactions present in the binary clusters of vanillic acid, a natural phenolic compound found in various plants and also observed in Amazonian aerosol, with common atmospheric bases such as ammonia and methylamines (mono-, di-, and tri-methylamine). Detailed and systematic quantum-chemical DFT calculations have been performed to analyze the structural, energetic, electrical, and spectroscopic properties of the clusters. The presence of strong intermolecular hydrogen-bonds and large binding electronic energies indicates that vanillic acid interacts strongly with atmospheric molecules. Scattering intensities of radiation (Rayleigh activities) are found to increase with cluster formation. The changes in binding free energy and enthalpy of formation of the vanillic acid-ammonia/amine binary clusters at lower temperatures demonstrate increased thermodynamical stability. The aim of this study was to extract vanillic acid from an aqueous solution through reactive extraction. Vanillic acid is utilized in the food and beverage industry as a flavoring agent. Tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) served as the reactive extractant, while natural oils like sesame oil and groundnut oil acted as diluents. The recovery of vanillic acid from fermentation broth or wastewater poses challenges due to toxicity concerns. However, employing natural solvents in the extraction process can significantly reduce toxicity. Various parameters, such as extraction efficiency, loading ratio, distribution coefficient, and equilibrium complexation constant, were determined to evaluate the extent of extraction achieved. Groundnut oil emerged as more effective than sesame oil as a diluent, exhibiting a maximum distribution coefficient of 13.31 and an extraction efficiency of 93.01 % at 5.27 mmol L–1 of acid concentration and 40 % v/v of TBP. Additionally, the number of theoretical stages required for the reactive extraction system was calculated, resulting in five stages for groundnut oil and four stages for sesame oil.

The aim is to investigate the possible pulmonary protective effect of vanillic acid (VA) in liposome-TPGS nanoparticles, to overcome VA's poor bioavailability. VA was successfully extracted. Liposomes were prepared using thin film hydration. Central composite design was adopted for optimisation of liposomes to get the maximum entrapment efficiency (EE%) and the minimum mean diameter, where the liposomes were further modified with TPGS, and tested for PDI, zeta-potential, and in-vitro drug release. In-vivo study on mice with LPS-acute pulmonary toxicity was tested. TPGS-modified VA-liposomes showed EE% of 69.35 ± 1.23%, PS of 201.7 ± 3.23 nm, PDI of 0.19 ± 0.02, and zeta-potential of −32.2 ± 0.32 mv. A sustained drug release of the TPGS-modified VA-liposomes was observed compared to standard VA, and a pulmonary-protective effect through decreasing miR-217 expression with subsequent anti-inflammatory effect through suppression of MAPK and PI3K/NF-κB pathways was also demonstrated in the current study. TPGS-modified VA-liposomes showed an enhanced bioavailability and a sustained drug release with promising pulmonary protective effects against acute pulmonary injury diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several series of new polymers were synthesized in this study: binary copolyesters of vanillic (VA) and 4′-hydroxybiphenyl-4-carboxylic (HBCA) acids, as well as ternary copolyesters additionally containing 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) and obtained via three different ways (in solution, in melt, and in solid state). The high values of logarithmic intrinsic viscosities and the insolubility of several samples proved their high molecular weights. It was found that the use of vanillic acid leads to the production of copolyesters with a relatively high glass transition temperature (~130 °C). Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the onset of weight loss temperatures of ternary copolyesters occurred at 330–350 °C, and the temperature of 5% mass loss was in the range of 390–410 °C. Two-stage thermal destruction was observed for all aromatic copolyesters of vanillic acid: decomposition began with VA units at 420–480 °C, and then the decomposition of more heat-resistant units took place above 520 °C. The copolyesters were thermotropic and exhibited a typical nematic type of liquid crystalline order. The mechanical characteristics of the copolyesters were similar to those of semi-aromatic copolyesters, but they were much lower than the typical values for fully aromatic thermotropic polymers. Thus, vanillic acid is a mesogenic monomer suitable for the synthesis of thermotropic fully aromatic and semi-aromatic copolyesters, but the processing temperature must not exceed 280 °C. Objective: Wound healing is characterized by the removal of dead/damaged tissue, the formation of new tissue, and finally, the restoration of the damaged tissue to its original function, starting from the moment of tissue injury. Vanillic acid (VA) is an important component of wheat bran and can heal wounds thanks to its antioxidant potential. This work aimed to investigate the dose-dependent effects of VA (1-2-4-8-16 and 32 µg/ml) in an in vitro way using a wound healing pattern in fibroblast cells. Methods: The MTT test was performed to determine cell viability 48 hours after VA application to the cells in which the wound model was created (except for the control and wound groups). The cells were examined morphologically with an inverted microscope. ELISA and Real-Time PCR analyses were performed to determine changes in oxidative stress parameters and FN1 and COL1α1 gene expressions. Results: The highest percentage closure rate of fibroblast cells in the in vitro wound pattern analysis and the highest percentage of cell viability by MTT analysis were determined in the VA-32 treated group. Morphological images showed that the evaluated gene expressions increased in fibroblast cells in a VA dose-dependent manner. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated for the first time that VA promotes cell migration and proliferation by regulating oxidative stress and FN1A and COL1α1 genes. This study discusses the preparation of biochar (BC) from Olive Mill Solid Waste (OMSW) on a semi-industrial scale, which can be utilized as an adsorbent to recover or remove phenolic compounds (vanillic acid). The preparation was carried out under optimized laboratory conditions (carbonization temperature, residence time, heating rate, atmosphere…). The obtained material was characterized using various techniques (BET surface area, Elementary analyses, proximate analyses, Organic Carbon). Different models were used to suit the adsorption isotherms (Langmuir, Freunlich, and Temkin…) and kinetics (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intra-particle diffusion…) of single phenolic acid. The experimental results correlate well with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, with a maximum adsorption capacity (qm = 57.47 mg.g−1) and a correlation coefficient of R2 = 0.999. To elucidate the activated sites on vanillic acid (VA) and the adsorption mechanism, Density Functional Theory (DFT) employing the B3LYP/6-311G basis set was utilized. Lower ΔEgap values are linked to greater inhibition efficiencies. In this context, the calculations indicate that vanillic acid, with its significantly higher EHOMO value of -1.3662, possesses a superior ability to donate electrons to the BC surface. Methotrexate-induced nephrotoxicity is a medical emergency which is associated with a variety of side effects. Vanillic acid (VA), as an antioxidant, removes free radical oxygen to protect cell defense. Therefore, this study investigated VA's beneficial effects on nephrotoxicity induced by methotrexate through its anti-apoptosis, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. Our study included five groups of male Wistar rats (n = 8): sham, MTX (Methotrexate) group: rats receiving methotrexate (20 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) on Day 2. Moreover, the remaining groups consisted of animals that received vanillic acid (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg, orally for seven days) plus MTX on the 2nd day. The rats were deeply anesthetized on the eighth day to obtain blood and renal tissue samples. The results showed that MTX can increase blood urea nitrogen and creatinine. However, VA (50 and 100 mg/kg) improved renal function as approved by histological findings. Compared with MTX-treated rats, VA enhanced the contents of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and reduced renal malondialdehyde (MDA). Moreover, VA reduced mRNA expressions of caspase-3 and Bcl-2-associated x protein (Bax) and caused mRNA overexpression of the renal B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2), and Nrf-2 (Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2) compared to the MTX group. Also, VA administration significantly reduced inflammatory agents. Overall, VA protects the kidneys against methotrexate-induced nephrotoxicity via anti-apoptosis, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. Natural product-based drug discovery from plant sources has frequently been practiced for many years in the field of health research. The present study aimed to determine the phytochemicals, antioxidant, antibacterial, cytotoxic, and thrombolytic properties of different solvent extracts of Dracaena spicata Roxb. Secondary metabolites were isolated from the methanol extract of D. spicata using a series of chromatographic techniques and characterized by NMR spectral analysis. The antioxidant potential of all the extracts was determined using DPPH free radical scavenging assay besides determining their total phenolic and flavonoid contents. Antibacterial activity was tested using the disc diffusion method, and cytotoxicity was assessed using the brine shrimp lethality assay. The thrombolytic activity of all the extracts was also measured. Two secondary metabolites were isolated from the methanol extract and characterized as vanillic acid (1) and isovanillic acid (2). The methanol extract exhibited the highest free radical scavenging abilities (IC50 value = 47.38 ± 2.96 µg/mL), the highest concentrations of phenolic (244.73 ± 0.25 mg/g gallic acid equivalent) and flavonoid content (297.08 ± 2.58 mg/g quercetin equivalent) and it was also shown to be the most cytotoxic (LC50 = 38.79 ± 2.79 µg/mL). The dichloromethane extract exhibited the highest inhibitory activity against Vibrio mimicus, producing a 32.8 ± 0.8 mm zone of inhibition and was found to have the highest thrombolytic activity (29.01 ± 1.25%). BACKGROUND: Vanillic acid, an aromatic carboxylic acid and a derivative of vanillin, is used as an additive in consumer goods for its aroma. Previously, most vanillic acid was produced through a petrochemical route, but as a consequence of stringent environmental policies, it is now produced by the biotransformation of ferulic acid. Vanillic acid is also found in the wastewater streams of paper‐pulp industries and olive‐oil mills. So, recovering vanillic acid from fermentation broth, either during bioproduction or from a wastewater stream, while minimizing toxicity, is a difficult task. In order to reduce the toxicity substantially, bio‐based solvents such as sunflower, mustard and rice bran oils were employed as diluents along with tri‐n‐butyl phosphate (TBP) as extractant in order to recover vanillic acid by reactive extraction. RESULTS: The extraction performance was elucidated using terms such as distribution ratio, extraction efficiency, loading ratio and equilibrium complexation constant for different extractant–diluent combinations. The highest extraction efficiency and distribution ratio for the different solvents were in the following order: TBP + sunflower‐oil (72.02%–92.47%; 2.57–12.29) > TBP + rice bran‐oil (65.56%–90.55%; 1.90–9.58) > TBP + mustard‐oil(64.03%–89.87%; 1.78–8.87). The theoretical number of stages was determined as 4 to achieve a targeted extraction efficiency of 90%; these predictions were borne out experimentally. The nosocomial bacterium Acinetobacter baumannii is protected from antibiotic treatment by acquiring antibiotic resistances and by forming biofilms. Cell attachment, one of the first steps in biofilm formation, is normally induced by environmental metabolites. We hypothesized that vanillic acid (VA), the oxidized form of vanillin and a widely available metabolite, may play a role in A. baumannii cell attachment. We first discovered that A. baumannii actively breaks down VA through the evolutionarily conserved vanABKP genes. These genes are under the control of the repressor VanR, which we show binds directly to VanR binding sites within the vanABKP genes bidirectional promoter. VA in turn counteracts VanR inhibition. We identified a VanR binding site and searched for it throughout the genome, especially in pili encoding promoter genes. We found a VanR binding site in the pilus encoding csu operon promoter and showed that VanR binds specifically to it. As expected, a strain lacking VanR overproduces Csu pili and makes robust biofilms. Our study uncovers the role that VA plays in facilitating the attachment of A. baumannii cells to surfaces, a crucial step in biofilm formation. The solubility of two natural phenolic compounds (vanillic acid (VA) and vanillin (V)) in four individual solvents (ethanol, butan-2-ol, ethylene glycol, and ethyl acetate) was measured using the gravimetric method from 283.15 to 323.15 K at atmospheric pressure. The optimization of the complexes between VA--solvents and V--solvents using the B3LYP theoretic technique and the 6-31+G (d, p) basis set indicated that the absolute value of interaction energy was higher, suggesting that the interaction between solute and the solvent was stronger. In addition, two excellent activity coefficient models (NRTL and Wilson) were used to correlate and evaluate the equilibrium solubility results. The highest relative average deviation and root-mean-square deviation values for VA are 4.36% and 3.09 x 10-3, respectively, and 3.35% and 5.52 x 10-3 for V. Furthermore, the excess enthalpy of the solution was determined on the basis of thermodynamic relations and the Wilson model. The findings indicate that the dissolution process was endothermic. Background and objectives: We aimed to determine the effects of vanillic acid (VA) on fracture healing radiologically, histologically, immunohistochemically, and biomechanically using a rat femur open fracture injury model. Methods: 32 male Wistar-Albino rats were used and divided into two groups: the study group (VA) and the control group. From the time they were operated on until they were sacrificed, the rats in the study group were given 100 mg/kg/day VA by oral gavage. After sacrification, the femurs were analyzed. Results: It was observed that the Huo histological scoring was significantly higher in the VA group (p = 0.001), and the ratio of the amount of callus tissue compared to intact bone tissue was significantly higher. While no significant difference was observed in immunohistochemical H-scores in Coll antibody staining (p = 1.000), a borderline significant difference in favor of VA was observed in Colili antibody staining (p = 0.078). In biomechanical analysis, failure load (N), total energy (J), maximum stress (MPa), and stiffness (N/mm) measurements were significantly higher in the VA group (p = 0.040, p = 0.021, p = 0.015, and p = 0.035, respectively). Conclusion: It has been observed that VA, with its antioxidative properties, increases fracture healing in rats, in which an open fracture model was created. We are hopeful that such an antioxidant, which is common in nature, will increase fracture healing. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by cognitive impairment, loss of learning and memory, and abnormal behaviors. Scopolamine (SCOP) is a non-selective antagonist of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors that exhibits the behavioral and molecular hallmarks of AD. Vanillic acid (VA), a phenolic compound, is obtained from the roots of a traditional plant called Angelica sinensis, and has several pharmacologic effects, including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenic, anti-metastatic, and antioxidant properties. Nevertheless, VA’s neuroprotective potential associated with the memory has not been thoroughly investigated. Therefore, this study investigated whether VA treatment has an ameliorative effect on the learning and memory impairment induced by SCOP in rats. Behavioral experiments were utilized to assess the learning and memory performance associated with the hippocampus. Using western blotting analysis and assay kits, the neuronal damage, oxidative stress, and acetylcholinesterase activity responses of hippocampus were evaluated. Additionally, the measurement of long-term potentiation was used to determine the function of synaptic plasticity in organotypic hippocampal slice cultures. In addition, the synaptic vesicles’ density and the length and width of the postsynaptic density were evaluated using electron microscopy. Consequently, the behavioral, biochemical, electrophysiological, and ultrastructural analyses revealed that VA treatment prevents learning and memory impairments caused by SCOP in rats. The study’s findings suggest that VA has a neuroprotective effect on SCOP-induced learning and memory impairment linked to the hippocampal cholinergic system, oxidative damage, and synaptic plasticity. Therefore, VA may be a prospective therapeutic agent for treating AD.

Drug-induced thrombocytopenia (DIT) is a disorder where platelet count declines as an adverse effect of therapeutic drugs. Plant extract of C. papaya Caripill™ is known to elevate platelet count under thrombocytopenic conditions. To evaluate the contribution of supplements with antioxidant potential to treat DIT, the comparative study of Caripill™, vanillic acid L-carnitine effect on platelet count and indices of oxidative stress in a model of rat thrombocytopenia induced through oral administration of hydroxyurea was performed. Wistar rats were grouped into four categories with five animals in each group: control (without any treatment); control + antioxidants; thrombocytopenia; thrombocytopenia + antioxidants. The above-mentioned antioxidants were supplemented orally at 50 mg/kg for 7 days. The level of lipid peroxidation products­, superoxides, protein carbonyls and sulfhydryls, SOD and CAT activity in isolated platelets as oxidative stress markers, and indices of platelets aggregation and ATP secretion as functional markers were used. Vanillic acid was shown to be beneficial, similar to Caripill™, during hydroxyurea-induced thrombocytopenia by maintaining platelet functions, enhancing both the antioxidant capacity of platelets and its number. L-carnitine efficiently up-regulated the enzymatic antioxidants, maintained platelet functions and protected lipids and proteins from oxidation in thrombocytopenic rats, however, it could not improve the platelet count. These findings open new avenues for employing the studied antioxidants as supplements for therapeutic purposes.

Abstract Background Continuous cropping challenges constrain the development of agriculture. Three main obstacles limit continuous cropping: autotoxicity of plant allelochemicals, deterioration of physicochemical characteristics of soil, and microflora imbalance. Plant-derived phenolic acids can cause autotoxicity, which is considered the main factor mediating continuous cropping obstacles. Reducing the phenolic acids in continuous cropping soils can decrease the autotoxicity of phenolic acids and ameliorate continuous cropping obstacles. Therefore, it is important to study the microbial resources that degrade allelochemical phenolic acids. Thus, the bacterial strain V4 that can degrade phenolic acids was isolated, identified, and genomically analyzed. Results Strain V4 isolated from strawberry soil using vanillic acid-mineral agar was identified as a Gram-negative short rod bacterium. Subsequent 16S rRNA phylogenetic analysis revealed that V4 clustered with members of the genus Sphingobium. The most closely related species were Sphingobium lactosutens DS20T (99% similarity) and Sphingobium abikonense NBRC 16140T (97.5% similarity). V4 also shared > 95% sequence similarity with other members of Sphingobium, so Sphingobium sp. V4 was named accordingly. Biochemical tests revealed that the biochemical characteristics of Sphingobium sp. V4 were similar to its most similar strains except for some properties. Sphingobium sp. V4 effectively degraded vanillic acid, ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, and syringic acid. V4 grew best at the conditions of 30 °C, pH 6.0–7.0, and 0–0.05% NaCl. 500 mg/L vanillic acid was completely degraded by V4 within 24 h under the optimal conditions. Whole genome analysis showed that Sphingobium sp. V4 contained one chromosome and three plasmids. Two genes involved in vanillic acid degradation were found in the V4 genome: the gene encoding vanillate O-demethylase oxidoreductase VanB on the chromosome and the gene encoding vanillate monooxygenase on a large plasmid. The organization of vanillate catabolic genes differed from the adjacent organization of the genes, encoding vanillate o-demethylase VanA and VanB subunits, in Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter. Conclusions The isolated bacterium Sphingobium sp. V4 degraded multiple phenolic acids. Its properties and genome were further analyzed. The study provides support for further investigation and application of this phenolic acid-degrading microorganism to alleviate continuous cropping obstacles in agriculture.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant contributor to global mortality and disability, and there is still no specific drug available to treat cognitive deficits in survivors. Vanillic acid (VA), a bioactive phenolic compound, has shown protective effects in various models of neurodegeneration; however, its impact on TBI outcomes remains elusive. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the possible role of VA in ameliorating TBI-induced cognitive decline and to reveal the mechanisms involved. TBI was induced using the Marmarou impact acceleration model to deliver an impact force of 300 g, and treatment with VA (50 mg/kg; P.O.) was initiated 30 minutes post-TBI. The cognitive performance, hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP), oxidative stress markers, neurological function, cerebral edema, and morphological changes were assessed at scheduled points in time. TBI resulted in cognitive decline in the passive avoidance task, impaired LTP in the perforant path-dentate gyrus (PP-DG) pathway, increased hippocampal oxidative stress, cerebral edema, neurological deficits, and neuronal loss in the rat hippocampus. In contrast, acute VA administration mitigated all the aforementioned TBI outcomes. The data suggest that reducing synaptic plasticity impairment, regulating oxidative and antioxidant defense, alleviating cerebral edema, and preventing neuronal loss by VA can be at least partially attributed to its protection against TBI-induced cognitive decline.

The incidence of gastrointestinal illness attributable to Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (ST) remains a concern for public health worldwide, as it can progress into systemic infections mediated by the type-three secretion system (T3SS), which allows for adherence and invasion to intestinal epithelial cells. The current study evaluates the ability of gallic acid (GA), protocatechuic acid (PA), and vanillic acid (VA) to impair the adhesion and invasion abilities of ST to a human epithelial (INT-407) cell monolayer while also assessing their cytotoxicity. GA, PA, and VA inhibited detectable ST growth at specific concentrations but showed cytotoxicity against INT-407 cells (>20% reduction in viability) after 3 h of treatments. Adjusting the pH of the solutions had a neutralizing effect on cytotoxicity, though it did reduce their antimicrobial potency. Adhesion of ST was reduced significantly when the cells were treated with 4.0 mg/mL of VA, whereas invasion was reduced in all treatments, with GA requiring the lowest concentration (0.5 mg/mL). Relative gene expression of virulence genes after treatment with GA showed downregulation in the T3SS regulator and effector hilA and sipA, respectively. Hippocampal synaptic dysfunction, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and neuronal loss play critical roles in the pathophysiology of diabetes‐associated cognitive decline (DACD). The study aimed to investigate the effects of vanillic acid (VA), a phenolic compound, against DACD and explore the potential underlying mechanisms. Following confirmation of diabetes, rats were treated with VA (50 mg/kg/day; P.O.) or insulin (6 IU/rat/day; S.C.) for 8 consecutive weeks. The cognitive performance of the rats was evaluated using passive‐avoidance and water‐maze tasks. Long‐term potentiation (LTP) was induced at hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) synapses in response to high‐frequency stimulation (HFS) applied to the perforant pathway (PP) to evaluate synaptic plasticity. Oxidative stress factors, inflammatory markers, and histological changes were evaluated in the rat hippocampus. This study showed that streptozotocin (STZ)‐induced diabetes caused cognitive decline that was associated with inhibition of LTP induction, suppression of enzymatic antioxidant activities, enhanced lipid peroxidation, elevated levels of inflammatory proteins, and neuronal loss. Interestingly, chronic treatment with VA alleviated blood glucose levels, improved cognitive decline, ameliorated LTP impairment, modulated oxidative‐antioxidative status, inhibited inflammatory response, and prevented neuronal loss in diabetic rats at a level comparable to insulin therapy. The results suggest that the antihyperglycemic, antioxidative, anti‐inflammatory, and neuroplastic properties of VA may be the mechanisms behind its neuroprotective effect against DACD. White-rot fungi, such as Phanerochaete chrysosporium, are the most efficient degraders of lignin, a major component of plant biomass. Enzymes produced by these fungi, such as lignin peroxidases and manganese peroxidases, break down lignin polymers into various aromatic compounds based on guaiacyl, syringyl, and hydroxyphenyl units. These intermediates are further degraded, and the aromatic ring is cleaved by 1,2,4-trihydroxybenzene dioxygenases. This study aimed to characterize homogentisate dioxygenase (HGD)-like proteins from P. chrysosporium that are strongly induced by the G-unit fragment of vanillin. We overexpressed two homologous recombinant HGDs, PcHGD1 and PcHGD2, in Escherichia coli. Both PcHGD1 and PcHGD2 catalyzed the ring cleavage in methoxyhydroquinone (MHQ) and dimethoxyhydroquinone (DMHQ). The two enzymes had the highest catalytic efficiency (kcat/Km) for MHQ, and therefore, we named PcHGD1 and PcHGD2 as MHQ dioxygenases 1 and 2 (PcMHQD1 and PcMHQD2), respectively, from P. chrysosporium. This is the first study to identify and characterize MHQ and DMHQ dioxygenase activities in members of the HGD superfamily. The study mainly focuses on the synthesis, thermal, hydrophobic, and anticorrosion properties of environmentally friendly polybenzoxazines based on vanillic acid for applications such as water repellent coatings and anticorrosion. Vanillic acid (VA) was individually reacted with cyclohexylamine (cha), dodecylamine (dda), furfurylamine (ffa), and 3-trifluoromethylaniline (tfma) in order to develop structurally distinct benzoxazines. The synthesized monomers molecular structure was examined using ATR-FTIR and 1H-NMR. Thermal characteristics were also described using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The polymerization temperature (Tp) of benzoxazines synthesized was observed in the range of 203–245°C from DSC analysis. The polymerization temperature of VA-ffa was found to be 203°C, which has lower than that of other benzoxazine monomers. Typically, the early decomposition temperatures of all the developed polybenzoxazines were over 250°C, demonstrating remarkable thermal stability. Poly(VA-tfma), one of the polybenzoxazines, exhibits highest value of char yield of 43% at 850°C. Additionally heat resistance index obtained for all the polybenzoxazines was ranged between 147 and 158°C. The value of water interface angle noticed for polybenzoxazine ranges from 142° to 145°. Among the synthesized polybenzoxazines, poly(VA-tfma) showed excellent hydrophobicity with highest value of 145°. In addition, hydrophobicity of the benzoxazine coated cured cotton fabric was analyzed for its durability at various time intervals. SEM analysis was performed for all the four VA-based polybenzoxazines. Benzoxazines were coated on mild steel (MS) plates to study the corrosion resistant property. Poly(VA-tfma) has better corrosion resistant behavior than that of poly(VA-cha), poly(VA-dda) and poly(VA-ffa) according to electrochemical impedance measurements. Further, salt spray test was conducted on polybenzoxazine coated MS for 96 h, minimum weight loss was observed for initial and after 96 h. Vanillic acid (VA) is a bioactive chemical present in many food plants and fruits. It has been shown to have a protective effect on pulmonary tissues in monocrotaline‐induced pulmonary arterial hypertension, as well as an intervention effect on right ventricular remodeling. The purpose of this study was to develop and test a reliable method for assessing VA utilizing ultra‐performance liquid chromatography–high resolution mass spectrometry using caffeic acid as the internal standard. Across diverse substrates, the correlation coefficient for VA ranged from 0.9992 to 0.9995. The method's intraday precision was <13.53% (RSD), and its accuracy (RE) ranged from −9.88 to 4.35%. The precision across days was <13.69% (RSD), while the accuracy ranged from 2.16 to 10.94% (RE). The extraction recoveries ranged from 80.30 to 118.81%, with a lower limit of quantification of 20 ng/mL. The approach was successfully applied to pharmacokinetic and tissue distribution studies of VA in rat plasma after gavage administration, and the pharmacokinetic parameters of VA in the plasma of the monocrotaline‐induced pulmonary arterial hypertension were significantly different from those of the control group. Background: Continuous cropping challenges constrain the development of agriculture. Three main obstacles limit continuous cropping: autotoxicity of plant allelochemicals, deterioration of physicochemical characteristics of soil, and microflora imbalance. Plant-derived phenolic acids can cause autotoxicity, which is considered the main factor mediating continuous cropping obstacles. Reducing the phenolic acids in continuous cropping soils can decrease the autotoxicity of phenolic acids and ameliorate continuous cropping obstacles. Therefore, it is important to study the microbial resources that degrade allelochemical phenolic acids. Thus, the bacterial strain V4 that can degrade phenolic acids was isolated, identified, and genomically analyzed. Results: Strain V4 isolated from strawberry soil using vanillic acid-mineral agar was identified as a Gram-negative short rod bacterium. Subsequent 16S rRNA phylogenetic analysis revealed that V4 clustered with members of the genus Sphingobium. The most closely related species were Sphingobium lactosutens DS20T (99% similarity) and Sphingobium abikonense NBRC 16140T (97.5% similarity). V4 also shared > 95% sequence similarity with other members of Sphingobium, so Sphingobium sp. V4 was named accordingly. Biochemical tests revealed that the biochemical characteristics of Sphingobium sp. V4 were similar to its most similar strains except for some properties. Sphingobium sp. V4 effectively degraded vanillic acid, ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, and syringic acid. V4 grew best at the conditions of 30 °C, pH 6.0–7.0, and 0–0.05% NaCl. 500 mg/L vanillic acid was completely degraded by V4 within 24 h under the optimal conditions. Whole genome analysis showed that Sphingobium sp. V4 contained one chromosome and three plasmids. Two genes involved in vanillic acid degradation were found in the V4 genome: the gene encoding vanillate O-demethylase oxidoreductase VanB on the chromosome and the gene encoding vanillate monooxygenase on a large plasmid. The organization of vanillate catabolic genes differed from the adjacent organization of the genes, encoding vanillate o-demethylase VanA and VanB subunits, in Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter. Conclusions: The isolated bacterium Sphingobium sp. V4 degraded multiple phenolic acids. Its properties and genome were further analyzed. Objective: To investigate the effect of vanillic acid (VA) on a Cuprizone (Cup) demyelinating rat model and the mechanisms behind such effect. Methods: Thirty adult male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into three groups: control, Cuprizone, and VA groups. Cuprizone was administrated at a dose of 450 mg/kg per day orally via gastric gavage for 5 weeks. The nerve conduction velocity (NCV) was studied in an isolated sciatic nerve, and then the sciatic nerve was isolated for histopathological examination, electron microscope examination, immunohistochemical staining, and biochemical and PCR assay. The level of IL17 was detected using ELISA, while the antioxidant genes Nrf2, HO-1 expression at the level of mRNA, expression of the myelin basic protein (MBP), interferon-gamma factor (INF)-γ and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and apoptotic marker (caspase-3) were measured using immunohistochemistry in the sciatic nerve. Results: There was a significant reduction in NCV in Cup compared to normal rats (p < 0.001), which was markedly improved in the VA group (p < 0.001). EM and histopathological examination revealed significant demyelination and deterioration of the sciatic nerve fibers with significant improvement in the VA group. The level of IL17 as well as the expression of INF-γ and caspase-3 were significantly increased with a significant reduction in the expression of MBP, Nrf2, and HO-1 in the sciatic nerve (p < 0.01), and VA treatment significantly improved the studied parameters (p < 0.01). Conclusion: The current study demonstrated a neuroprotective effect for VA against the Cup-induced demyelinating rat model. The aim of this study was to extract vanillic acid from an aqueous solution through reactive extraction. Vanillic acid is utilized in the food and beverage industry as a flavoring agent. Tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) served as the reactive extractant, while natural oils like sesame oil and groundnut oil acted as diluents. The recovery of vanillic acid from fermentation broth or wastewater poses challenges due to toxicity concerns. However, employing natural solvents in the extraction process can significantly reduce toxicity. Various parameters, such as extraction efficiency, loading ratio, distribution coefficient, and equilibrium complexation constant, were determined to evaluate the extent of extraction achieved. Groundnut oil emerged as more effective than sesame oil as a diluent, exhibiting a maximum distribution coefficient of 13.31 and an extraction efficiency of 93.01 % at 5.27 mmol L-1 of acid concentration and 40 % v/v of TBP. Additionally, the number of theoretical stages required for the reactive extraction system was calculated, resulting in five stages for groundnut oil and four stages for sesame oil. Postmenopausal women have an increased risk of developing metabolic diseases, such as osteoporosis, obesity, and diabetes. Thus, chemoprophylaxis for postmenopausal symptoms through the daily diet is critical. Vanillic acid (VA) is a phenolic compound found in the herbal medicine "Toki" (Angelica acutiloba) and the mycelium of the shiitake mushroom Lentinula edodes. VA has no affinity for estrogen receptors and may offer preventive effects against these diseases. Here, we demonstrate the metabolic effects of VA in ovariectomized mice. Ten-week-old ovariectomized mice were fed a VA-containing diet (100 mg/kg body weight/day) for 10 weeks. Dietary VA significantly prevented femoral bone mineral density loss and also reduced the increases in glucose levels and white adipose tissue weights compared with those in the control group. Furthermore, uterine enlargement was not observed because of these beneficial effects. The engineered nano-vehicle was constructed using magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONs) and chitosan (CTS) to stabilize anticancer agent vanillic acid (VNA) which was loaded on CTS-coated MIONs nanocarrier, and more importantly, to achieve sustained VNA release and subsequent proper anticancer activity. The new thermally stable VNA-CTS- MIONs nanocomposite was spherical with a middle diameter of 6 nm and had a high drug loading of about 11.8 %. The MIONs and resulting nanocomposite were composed of pure magnetite and therefore, were superparamagnetic with saturation magnetizations of 53.3 and 45.7 emu.g−1, respectively. The release profiles of VNA from VNA-CTS-MIONs nanocomposite in different pH values were sustained and showed controlled pH-responsive delivery of the loaded VNA with 89 % and 74 % percentage release within 2354 and 4046 min at pH 5 and 7.4, respectively, as well as were in accordance with the pseudo-second-order model. The VNA-CTS-MIONs nanocomposite treatment at diverse concentrations remarkably decreased the viability and promoted ROS accumulation and apoptosis in the MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells. Hence, it can be a propitious candidate for the management of breast cancer in the future.

Vanillic acid (4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoic acid) (VA) is a natural benzoic acid derivative commonly found in herbs, rice, maize, and some fruits and vegetables. However, due to the wide use of VA in various industrial sectors, its presence in the environment might harm living organisms. This study evaluated the toxicity of VA and its isomers, iso-VA and orto-VA. Firstly, the antimicrobial effect of VA and its isomers iso-VA and orto-VA (in doses of 1000; 100, 10, 1; 0.1; 0.01 mg/L) against Escherichia coli, Sarcina spp., Enterobacter homaechei, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans were identified. The toxic effect and protein degradation potential of VA and its isomers were determined using E. coli grpE:luxCDABE and lac:luxCDABE biosensor strains. However, the genotoxicity and oxidative stress generation were assessed with the E. coli recA:luxCDABE biosensor and E. coli strain. The results showed that VA, iso-VA, and orto-VA exhibited antimicrobial activity against all tested bacterial strains. However, VA's antimicrobial effect differed from iso-VA and orto-VA. Similar toxic, genotoxic, and oxidative stress-inducing effects were observed for VA and its isomers. Each compound exhibited toxicity, cellular protein degradation, and genotoxic activity against E. coli grpE:luxCDABE, E. coli lac:luxCDABE, and E. coli recA:luxCDABE strains. Analysis of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation within E. coli cells highlighted oxidative stress as a contributing factor to the toxicity and genotoxicity of VA and its isomers. While the findings suggest potential applications of VA compounds as food preservatives, their presence in the environment raises concerns regarding the risks posed to living organisms due to their toxic and genotoxic characteristics.

The damage of integrated epithelial epithelium is a key pathogenic factor and closely associated with the recurrence of ulcerative colitis (UC). Here, we reported that vanillic acid (VA) exerted potent therapeutic effects on DSS-induced colitis by restoring intestinal epithelium homeostasis via the inhibition of ferroptosis. By the CETSA assay and DARTS assay, we identified carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX, CA9) as the direct target of VA. The binding of VA to CA9 causes insulin-induced gene-2 (INSIG2) to interact with stromal interaction molecule 1 (STIM1), rather than SREBP cleavage-activating protein (SCAP), leading to the translocation of SCAP-SREBP1 from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to the Golgi apparatus for cleavage into mature SREBP1. The activation of SREBP1 induced by VA then significantly facilitated the transcription of stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1) to exert an inhibitory effect on ferroptosis. By inhibiting the excessive death of intestinal epithelial cells caused by ferroptosis, VA effectively preserved the integrity of intestinal barrier and prevented the progression of unresolved inflammation. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that VA could alleviate colitis by restoring intestinal epithelium homeostasis through CA9/STIM1-mediated inhibition of ferroptosis, providing a promising therapeutic candidate for UC.

Phedimus aizoon has been utilized as a medicinal plant in Asia. However, the production of phytochemical-rich extracts from P. aizoon and the evaluation of their bioactivity are limited. Herein, phytochemical-rich extracts were prepared by ultrasound-assisted extraction of P. aizoon, with a high extraction yield of 16.56%. The extracts contained about 126 mg of phenolics and 31 mg of flavonoids per g of the extracts. The chromatographic analysis (GC-MS and HPLC analyses) identified 19 notable phytochemicals of the extracts from P. aizoon, including pentacosane, hexadecanoic acid, gallic acid, vanillic acid, and quercetin. The gallic acid content of the extracts was relatively high at 2.75 mg/g. The identified compounds are known to have various bioactivities, such as antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal activities. In fact, the prepared extracts exhibited antioxidant activity at 24–28% of that of ascorbic acid. In addition, it showed antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli (Gram-negative bacteria) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive bacteria). This study highlights that P. aizoon deserves attention as a natural bioactive substance and emphasizes the need for applications of the extracts from P. aizoon.

Lignin is the largest natural source of aromatic chemicals. Due to its complex polymeric structure, Kraft lignin is under-utilized and usually combusted for heat generation, thus resulting in CO2 emissions in the Kraft process. To valorize lignin with renewable electricity and to convert it into value-added aromatic chemicals, efficient electrochemical methods need to be discovered, based not only on its apparent yield of building block chemicals but also on its energy efficiency. In this study, the electro-oxidative performance of six different metals was systematically evaluated. The results showed that the synthesized Ni-based catalyst can increase the vanillin and vanillic acid apparent yield by 50–60% compared to when Ni-based catalyst is absent. We also found that the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is more than a competing reaction since the presence of oxygen synergistically aids oxidation of the lignin to increase aromatic chemical production by 63% compared to the sum of vanillin generation from both voltage-only and oxygen-only scenarios. The seeds of Mahuad (Lepisanthes rubiginosa (Roxb.) Leenh (LRL) were analyzed for proximate composition and the contents of phenolic acids, flavonoids, and sugars/oligosaccharides. The LRL seeds contained approximately 29% moisture, 10% protein, 2% fat, 16% fiber, 2% ash, and 42% carbohydrate. The major phenolic acids were vanillic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid, accounting for 30% and 26% of total phenolic content, respectively. The predominant flavonoids were quercetin (62% of total flavonoid content) followed by myricetin (22%). Proline, methionine, and arginine were the dominant amino acids, constituting 35%, 19%, and 13% of total amino acid content, respectively. Prebiotic fructooligosaccharide (5.3 mg/g) and stachyose (4.2 mg/g) were also found in the LRL seeds. The major fatty acids were palmitic acid (C 16:0, 41%), oleic acid (C 18:1n9, 27%), and linoleic acid (C 18:2n6, 19%). This information reveals useful information about LRL seeds as a potential source of bioactive compounds for future use in various aspects including food, feeds, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is one of the known causes of anovulatory fertility in the world. Previous research has linked oxidative stress could contribute to PCOS, and vanillic acid has shown antioxidant potential. Hence, the present study evaluated the effect of vanillic acid on letrozole-induced polycystic ovarian syndrome in female rats. Materials and methods: PCOS was induced in Wistar female rats with letrozole (1 mg/kg, orally) in carboxymethoxycellulose (1 % w/v), administered for 21 days. After induction, the standard group received clomiphene citrate (1 mg/kg, orally) while other treatment groups were administered with vanillic acid at doses 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg, orally for 15 days, and without treatment was considered a negative control group. Recently, nanoparticles have received considerable attention owing to their efficiency in overcoming the limitations of traditional chemotherapeutic drugs. In our study, we synthesized a vanillic acid nanocomposite using both chitosan and silver nanoparticles, tested its efficacy against lung cancer cells, and analyzed its antimicrobial effects. We used several characterization techniques such as ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to determine the stability, morphological characteristics, and properties of the biosynthesized vanillic acid nanocomposites. Furthermore, the vanillic acid nanocomposites were tested for their antimicrobial effects against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. The data showed that the nanocomposite effectively inhibited microbes, but its efficacy was less than that of the individual silver and chitosan nanoparticles. Moreover, the vanillic acid nanocomposite exhibited anticancer effects by increasing the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins (BAX, Casp3, Casp7, cyt C, and p53) and decreasing the gene expression of Bcl-2. Overall, vanillic acid nanocomposites possess promising potential against microbes, exhibit anticancer effects, and can be effectively used for treating diseases such as cancers and infectious diseases.

Vanillic acid is a naturally occurring versatile phenolic molecule with promising antifungal activity, however, there have been no studies of the possible use of vanillic acid for its antifungal activity against a serious soil-borne fungal plant pathogen namely Sclerotium rolfsii. This study was performed to assess the antifungal potential of vanillic acid by analyzing growth, morphological, and biochemical changes in S. rolfsii under laboratory conditions. The results revealed that vanillic acid (0.003-0.10 %) significantly reduced fungal growth, distorted fungal morphology (hyphae, and sclerotia), altered activity of enzymes (catalase, peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase). However, 0.05 and 0.10 % concentrations caused complete inhibition in the fungal growth. The results explained in this work serve as a basis for further research to formulate fungicides using vanillic acid.

Apocynin (AP) and vanillic acid (VA) are rich antioxidant has a broad spectrum of pharmacological activities. However, its practical administration has been limited due to poor aqueous solubility and bioavailability. Hence Cyclodextrins are used to improve the solubility and oral bioavailability of AP and VA via Hydroxypropyl beta-cyclodextrin (HPBCD) formulation. HPBCD inclusion complex with AP-VA was synthesized and characterized for its physicochemical properties. The average particle size of HPBCD-AP-VA was 164.1 ± 1.3nm, 146.7 ± 2.0nm, and zeta potential was -30.0 mv and -17.3 mv. The encapsulation `efficiency was found to be 97% and 95%, respectively. AFM, SEM, and TEM confirmed the size, spherical nature, and smooth surface of the inclusion complex. The results of XRD, DSC and FTIR, indicated that AP-VA successfully entered the cavity of HPBCD. In vitro bioaccessibility result revealed that HPBCD inclusions were more accessible when compared to Native form. Further, in vivo bioavailability study showed high concentration of HPBCD-AP-VA complex in plasma (25mg/kg bwt) and compared to Native. The Tmax and AUC of HPBCD complex in plasma was 2h and 253.46 ± 3.42, 249.28 ± 2.31 respectively. The results of the study revealed that using HPBCD to encapsulate AP-VA can be beneficial for the pharmacological uses.

MIF/CD74 signaling pathway and autophagy may be closely related to liver fibrosis. Vanillic acid (VA) is likely to have an anti-liver fibrosis effect, although related studies have not been reported. The aim of this study was to verify the role of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) autophagy and the MIF/CD74 signaling pathway in the pathogenesis of liver fibrosis, and to investigate the effect of VA on liver fibrosis through in vivo and in vitro experiments. Our results showed that VA significantly attenuated CCl4-induced liver fibrosis. The alleviation of liver fibrosis with VA treatment was associated with a reduction of MIF, CD74, α-SMA, LC3B and Collagen 1. In addition, VA, MIF inhibitor (ISO-1) and autophagy inhibitor (3-MA) markedly inhibited the proliferation and migration of HSCs. This study indicates that VA could protect against HSCs activation, proliferation and migration by inhibiting the autophagy in HSCs via the MIF/CD74 signaling pathway so that alleviates liver fibrosis.

Vanillic acid (VA) is a phenolic compound with potential antioxidant activity, which improves ischemia-induced myocardial degeneration, by reducing oxidative stress; however, it suffers poor bioavailability owing to its poor solubility. VA-loaded pharmacosomes were optimized using a central composite design, where the effect of phosphatidylcholine:VA molar ratio and the precursor concentration were studied. An optimized formulation (O1) was prepared and tested for the release rate of VA, in vivo bioavailability, and cardioprotective potential on myocardial infarction-induced rats. The optimized formulation showed a particle size of 229.7 nm, polydispersity index of 0.29, and zeta potential of − 30 mV. O1 showed a sustained drug release for 48 h. The HPLC–UV method was developed for the determination of VA in plasma samples using protein precipitation. The optimized formulation showed a great improvement in the bioavailability as compared to VA. The residence time of the optimized formula was 3 times longer than VA. The optimized formulation showed a more potent cardioprotective effect as compared to VA, via inhibition of the MAPK pathway with subsequent inhibition of PI3k/NF-κB signaling, in addition to its antioxidant effect. The optimized formulation showed normalization of many oxidative stress and inflammatory biomarkers. In this work, a novel multipurpose Faujasite (FAU) zeolite composite membrane was fabricated by in‐situ hydrothermal method to separate different solute molecules such as vanillic acid, phenol, and brilliant green from the aqueous solution. The coal fly ash based ceramic substrate was synthesized and used as substrate for preparing the zeolite composite membrane. The X‐ray diffraction (XRD) pattern confirmed the crystalline nature of membranes and the presence of Quartz and hematite in the composite membrane. The presence of Si‐O and Al‐O in zeolite coated composite membrane was confirmed by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis showed the porous structure and 8.34 μm thickness of zeolite coating on membrane. The isoelectric point of composite membrane was observed at pH 2.07 through zeta potential analysis. Brunauer‐Emmett‐Teller (BET) surface area, average pore volume and pore diameter of zeolite composite membrane were estimated as 6.406 m2/gm, 0.0070 cm3/gm, and 4.371 nm, respectively. The hydraulic pore radius and porosity of composite membranes were 27.7 nm and 20.1%. The maximum separation efficiency of FAU zeolite composite membrane towards vanillic acid, phenol and brilliant green was estimated as 78.67%, 89.13%, and 94.28%, respectively, for 200 mg/L feed concentration at 276 kPa applied pressure. The results obtained in this study reveals that the multipurpose FAU zeolite composite membrane fabricated in this study can be effectively used for separation of various solutes molecules present in the wastewater. To better understand the mechanism of continuous cropping on peanut growth, simulative soil with vanillic acid was used in pot experiment. The vanillic acid concentration was set to 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1 μmol·g-1 dry soil, and peanut variety Yueyou 7 was used as material. Traits were investigated after the exogenous application of vanillic acid, including malondialdehyde (MDA) content, peanut root antioxidant enzyme activity (CAT, POD, SOD), basic agronomic traits of peanut, nutrient content of rhizosphere soil and soil enzyme activity at different growth stages. It was found that vanillic acid inhibited the main root length, main stem length, branch number and yield of peanut. All concentrations of vanillic acid had a chemistorizing effect on MDA content, CAT and SOD enzyme activities, and had allelopathic inhibitory effects on the length of the main root, main stem, number of branches and yield of peanuts, which affected peanut absorption of soil nutrients, resulting in higher enzyme activities than control. Most edible mushrooms are grown in mushroom beds, but reusing the waste beds after cultivation is difficult, and they are often discarded. Therefore, developing a use for waste beds would be beneficial. The waste beds after mushroom cultivation contain syringic acid (SA) and vanillic acid (VA), which are phenolic compounds with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. This study quantified SA and VA in mushroom beds cultivating Lentinula edodes (KX-S055 and XR-1) and Hypsizygus marmoreus (KX-BS023 and KX-BS025). The SA and VA amounts in the mushroom beds gradually increased after inoculation, indicating that SA and VA were produced during mushroom cultivation. In vitro, SA and VA were produced from the reaction between the wood component, lignin, and the waste bed protease extracts. Breast cancer patients are characterized by the oncobiotic transformation of multiple microbiome communities, including the gut microbiome. Oncobiotic transformation of the gut microbiome impairs the production of antineoplastic bacterial metabolites. The goal of this study was to identify bacterial metabolites with antineoplastic properties. We constructed a 30-member bacterial metabolite library and screened the library compounds for effects on cell proliferation and epithelial-mesenchymal transition. The metabolites were applied to 4T1 murine breast cancer cells in concentrations corresponding to the reference serum concentrations. However, yric acid, glycolic acid, d-mannitol, 2,3-butanediol, and trans-ferulic acid exerted cytostatic effects, and 3-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, and vanillic acid exerted hyperproliferative effects. Furthermore, 3-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, 2,3-butanediol, and hydrocinnamic acid inhibited epithelial-to-mesenchymal (EMT) transition. We identified redox sets among the metabolites (d-mannitol—d-mannose, 1-butanol—butyric acid, ethylene glycol—glycolic acid—oxalic acid), wherein only one partner within the set (d-mannitol, butyric acid, glycolic acid) possessed bioactivity in our system, suggesting that changes to the local redox potential may affect the bacterial secretome.
