Partial-information multiple access (PIMA) is an orthogonal multiple access (OMA) uplink scheme where time is divided into frames, each composed of two parts. The first part is used to count the number of users with packets to transmit, while the second has a variable number of allocated slots, each assigned to multiple users to uplink data transmission. We investigate the case of correlated user activations, wherein the correlation is due to the retransmissions of the collided packets, modeling PIMA as a partially observable-Markov decision process. The assignment of users to slots is optimized based on the knowledge of both the number of active users and past successful transmissions and collisions. The scheduling turns out to be a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem, with a complexity exponentially growing with the number of users. Thus, sub-optimal greedy solutions are proposed and evaluated. This work aims at investigating the optical transmission system needed for such lightweight sail, taking into account the physical constraints of such unprecedented link and focusing on the optimal scheme for the optical signal emission. In particular, the optical signal is distributed to several emitters on the sail. The light diffraction resulting from the pattern of the emitters acting coherently determines the characteristics of the whole beam transmitted by the sail and of the received signal on the Earth. The performance of the digital communication system using pulse position modulation (PPM) can be assessed and channel coding schemes are proposed. We are using the paradigm for which the entire sail communication system is described as a Tree-of-light: the detectors, CPU, memory and laser transmitter are the central unit, representing the trunk of the tree. The branches of the tree are the waveguides, directed to the sail surface. By means of multimode splitters, the signal is further distributed via the petioles to the emitters, the leaves, realized by grating couplers (GCs), on which this work is more focused.

Next-generation internet-of-things (IoT) networks require extremely low latency, complexity, and collision probability. We introduce the novel partial-information multiple access (PIMA) scheme, a semi-grant-free (GF) coordinated random access (RA) protocol for short packet transmission, with the aim of reducing the latency and packet loss of traditional multiple access schemes, as well as more recent preamble-based schemes. With PIMA, the base station (BS) acquires partial information on instantaneous traffic conditions in the partial information acquisition (PIA) sub-frame, estimating the number of active devices, i.e., having packets waiting for transmission in their queue. Based on this estimate, the BS chooses both the total number of slots to be allocated in the data transmission (DT) sub-frame and the respective user-to-slot assignment. Although collisions may still occur due to multiple users assigned to the same slot, they are drastically reduced with respect to the slotted ALOHA (SALOHA) scheme, while achieving lower latency than both time-division multiple-access (TDMA) and preamble-based protocols, due to the extremely reduced overhead of the PIA sub-frame. With the stringent requirements introduced by the new sixth-generation (6G) internet-of-things (IoT) use cases, traditional approaches to multiple access control have started to show their limitations. A new wave of grant-free (GF) approaches have been therefore proposed as a viable alternative. However, a definitive solution is still to be accomplished. In our work, we propose a new semi-GF coordinated random access (RA) protocol, denoted as partial-information multiple access (PIMA), to reduce packet loss and latency, particularly in the presence of sporadic activations. We consider a machine-type communications (MTC) scenario, wherein devices need to transmit data packets in the uplink to a base station (BS). When using PIMA, the BS can acquire partial information on the instantaneous traffic conditions and, using compute-over-the-air techniques, estimate the number of devices with packets waiting for transmission in their queue. Based on this knowledge, the BS assigns to each device a single slot for transmission. However, since each slot may still be assigned to multiple users, collisions may occur. Both the total number of allocated slots and the user assignments are optimized, based on the estimated number of active users, to reduce collisions and improve the efficiency of the multiple access scheme. To prove the validity of our solution, we compare PIMA to time-division multiple-access (TDMA) and slotted ALOHA (SALOHA) schemes, the ideal solutions for orthogonal multiple access (OMA) in the time domain in the case of low and high traffic conditions, respectively. We show that PIMA is able not only to adapt to different traffic conditions and to provide fewer packet drops regardless of the intensity of packet generations, but also able to merge the advantages of both TDMA and SALOHA schemes, thus providing performance improvements in terms of packet loss probability and latency., Comment: Conference Paper, 7 pages, 3 figures

This paper considers massive Internet of Things systems, especially for LoW Power Wide Area Networks, that aim at connecting billions of low-cost devices with multi-year battery life requirements. Current systems for massive Internet of Things exhibit severe problems when trying to pursue the target of serving a very large number of users. In this paper, a novel asynchronous spread spectrum modulation, called Golden Modulation, is introduced. This modulation provides a vast family of equivalent waveforms with very low cross-interference even in asynchronous conditions, hence enabling natural multiuser operation without the need for inter-user synchronization or for interference cancellation receivers. Thanks to minimal interference between waveforms, coupled with the absence of coordination requirements, this modulation can accommodate very high system capacity. The basic modulation principles, relying on spectrum spreading via direct Zadoff-Chu sequences modulation, are presented and the corresponding theoretical bit error rate performance in an additive white Gaussian noise channel is derived and compared by simulation with realistic Golden Modulation receiver performance. The demodulation of the Golden Modulation is also described, and its performance in the presence of uncoordinated multiple users is characterized., Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication

The development of direct probes of entanglement is integral to the rapidly expanding field of complex quantum materials. Here we test the robustness of entangled neutrons as a quantum probe by measuring the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt contextuality witness while varying the beam properties. Specifically, we prove that the entanglement of the spin and path subsystems of individual neutrons prepared in two different experiments using two different apparatuses persists even after varying the entanglement length, coherence length, and neutron energy difference of the paths. The two independent apparatuses acting as entangler-disentangler pairs are static-field magnetic Wollaston prisms and resonance-field radio frequency flippers. Our results show that the spatial and energy properties of the neutron beam may be significantly altered without reducing the contextuality witness value below the Tsirelson bound, meaning that maximum entanglement is preserved. We also show that two paths may be considered distinguishable even when separated by less than the neutron coherence length. This work is the key step in the realization of the new modular, robust technique of entangled neutron scattering.

Pervasive healthcare is a promising assisted-living solution for chronic patients. However, current cutting-edge communication technologies are not able to strictly meet the requirements of these applications, especially in the case of life-threatening events. To bridge this gap, this paper proposes a new architecture to support indoor healthcare monitoring, with a focus on epileptic patients. Several novel elements are introduced. The first element is the cascading of a WLAN and a cellular network, where IEEE 802.11ax is used for the wireless local area network to collect physiological and environmental data in-home and 5G-enabled Fixed Wireless Access links transfer them to a remote hospital. The second element is the extension of the network slicing concept to the WLAN, and the introduction of two new slice types to support both regular monitoring and emergency handling. Moreover, the inclusion of local computing capabilities at the WLAN router, together with a mobile edge computing resource, represents a further architectural enhancement. Local computation is required to trigger not only health-related alarms, but also the network slicing change in case of emergency: in fact, proper radio resource scheduling is necessary for the cascaded networks to handle healthcare traffic together with other promiscuous everyday communication services. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach while highlighting the performance gain achieved with respect to baseline solutions.

In this paper we present a new modulation, called DLoRa, similar in principle to the conventional LoRa modulation and compatible with it in terms of bandwidth and numerology. DLoRa departs from the conventional LoRa modulation as it is using a decreasing instantaneous frequency in the chirps instead of an increasing one as for the conventional LoRa modulation. Furthermore we describe a software environment to accurately evaluate the "isolation" of the different virtual channels created both by LoRa and DLoRa when using different Spreading Factors. Our results are in agreement with the ones present in literature for the conventional LoRa modulation and show that it is possible to double the number of channels by using simultaneously LoRa and DLora. Spiral waves are self-repeating waves that can form in excitable media, propagating outward from their center in a spiral pattern. Spiral waves have been observed in different natural phenomena and have been linked to medical conditions such as epilepsy and atrial fibrillation. We used a simple cellular automaton model to study propagation in excitable media, with a particular focus in understanding spiral wave behavior. The main ingredients of this cellular automaton model are an excitation condition and characteristic excitation and refractory periods. The literature shows that fixed excitation and refractory periods together with specific initial conditions generate stationary and stable spiral waves. In the present work we allowed the activation and refractory periods to fluctuate uniformly over a range of values. Under these conditions formed spiral waves might drift, the wave front might break, and in some extreme cases it might lead to a complete breakdown of the spiral pattern., Comment: 15 pages, 14 Figures, 18 references

PLATO has been selected and adopted by ESA as the third medium-class Mission (M3) of the Cosmic Vision Program, to be launched in 2026 with a Soyuz-Fregat rocket from the French Guiana. Its Payload is based on a suite of 26 telescopes and cameras in order to discover and characterise, thanks to ultra-high accurate photometry and the transits method, new exoplanets down to the range of Earth analogues. Each camera is composed of 4 CCDs working in full frame or frame-transfer mode. 24 cameras out of 26 host 4510 by 4510 pixels CCDs, operated in full-frame mode with a pixel depth of 16 bits and a cadence of 25 s. Given the huge data volume to be managed, the PLATO Payload relies on an efficient Data Processing System (DPS) whose Units perform images windowing, cropping and compression. Each camera and DPS Unit is connected to a fast SpaceWire network running at 100 MHz and interfaced to the satellite On-Board Computer by means of an Instrument Control Unit (ICU), performing data collection and compression.

PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars (PLATO) is a medium-class mission belonging to the European Space Agency (ESA) Cosmic Vision programme. The mission payload is composed of 26 telescopes and cameras which will observe uninterruptedly stars like our Sun in order to identify new exoplanets candidates down to the range of Earth analogues. The images from the cameras are generated by several distributed Digital Processing Units (DPUs) connected together in a SpaceWire network and producing a large quantity of data to be processed by the Instrument Control Unit. The paper presents the results of the analyses and simulations performed using the Simulator for HI-Speed Networks (SHINE) with the objective to assess the on-board data network performance.

Cerium dioxide (CeO2) thin films were deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on both Si and TiN substrates. The ALD growth produces CeO2 cubic polycrystalline films on both substrates. However, the films show a preferential orientation along <200> crystallographic direction for CeO2/Si or <111> for CeO2/TiN. In correspondence, we measure a relative concentration of Ce3+ equals to 22.0% in CeO2/Si and around 18% in CeO2/TiN, by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Such values indicate the presence of oxygen vacancies in the films. The ALD growth produces CeO2 films with polycrystalline cubic phase on both substrates. However, the films show a preferential orientation along <200> crystallographic direction for CeO2/Si or <111> for CeO2/TiN, as revealed by X-ray diffraction. Additionally, CeO2 films differ in interface roughness depending on the substrate. Furthermore, the relative concentration of Ce3+ is 22.0% in CeO2/Si and around 18% in CeO2/TiN, as obtained by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Such values indicate a ~10% off-stoichiometry and are indicative of the presence of oxygen vacancies in the films. Nonetheless, CeO2 bandgap energy and refractive index at 550 nm are 3.54+/-0.63 eV and 2.3 for CeO2/Si, and 3.63+/-0.18 eV and 2.4 for CeO2/TiN, respectively. Our results extend the knowledge on the structural and chemical properties of ALD-deposited CeO2 either on Si or TiN substrates, underlying films differences and similarities, thus contributing to boost the use of CeO2 through ALD deposition as foreseen in a wide number of applications.

Connectivity is probably the most basic building block of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm. Up to know, the two main approaches to provide data access to the \emph{things} have been based either on multi-hop mesh networks using short-range communication technologies in the unlicensed spectrum, or on long-range, legacy cellular technologies, mainly 2G/GSM, operating in the corresponding licensed frequency bands. Recently, these reference models have been challenged by a new type of wireless connectivity, characterized by low-rate, long-range transmission technologies in the unlicensed sub-GHz frequency bands, used to realize access networks with star topology which are referred to a \emph{Low-Power Wide Area Networks} (LPWANs). In this paper, we introduce this new approach to provide connectivity in the IoT scenario, discussing its advantages over the established paradigms in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, and architectural design, in particular for the typical Smart Cities applications.

In this contribution, we introduce an interference alignment scheme that allows the coexistence of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) macro-cell and a cognitive small-cell, deployed in a two-tiered structure and transmitting over the same bandwidth. We derive the optimal linear strategy for the single antenna secondary base station, maximizing the spectral efficiency of the opportunistic link, accounting for both signal sub-space structure and power loading strategy. Our analytical and numerical findings prove that the precoder structure proposed is optimal for the considered scenario in the face of Rayleigh and exponential decaying channels., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. In this contribution, we consider a two-tiered network and focus on the coexistence between the two tiers at physical layer. We target our efforts on a long term evolution advanced (LTE-A) orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) macro-cell sharing the spectrum with a randomly deployed second tier of small-cells. In such networks, high levels of co-channel interference between the macro and small base stations (MBS/SBS) may largely limit the potential spectral efficiency gains provided by the frequency reuse 1. To address this issue, we propose a novel cognitive interference alignment based scheme to protect the macro-cell from the cross-tier interference, while mitigating the co-tier interference in the second tier. Remarkably, only local channel state information (CSI) and autonomous operations are required in the second tier, resulting in a completely self-organizing approach for the SBSs. The optimal precoder that maximizes the spectral efficiency of the link between each SBS and its served user equipment is found by means of a distributed one-shot strategy. Numerical findings reveal non-negligible spectral efficiency enhancements with respect to traditional time division multiple access approaches at any signal to noise (SNR) regime.
