The heat produced by magnetic nanoparticles, when they are submitted to a time-varying magnetic field, has been used in many auspicious biotechnological applications. In the search for better performance in terms of the specific power absorption (SPA) index, researchers have studied the influence of the chemical composition, size and dispersion, shape, and exchange stiffness in morphochemical structures. Monodisperse assemblies of magnetic nanoparticles have been produced using elaborate synthetic procedures, where the product is generally dispersed in organic solvents. However, the colloidal stability of these rough dispersions has not received much attention in these studies, hampering experimental determination of the SPA. To investigate the influence of colloidal stability on the heating response of ferrofluids, we produced bimagnetic core@shell NPs chemically composed of a ZnMn mixed ferrite core covered by a maghemite shell. Aqueous ferrofluids were prepared with these samples using the electric double layer (EDL) as a strategy to maintain colloidal stability. By starting from a proper sample, ultrastable concentrated ferrofluids were achieved by both tuning the ion/counterion ratio and controlling the water content. As the colloidal stability mainly depends on the ion configuration on the surface of the magnetic nanoparticles, different levels of nanoparticle clustering are achieved by changing the ionic force and pH of the medium. Thus, the samples were submitted to two procedures of EDL destabilization, which involved dilution with an alkaline solution and a neutral pH viscous medium. The SPA results of all prepared ferrofluid samples show a reduction of up to half the efficiency of the standard sample when the ferrofluids are in a neutral pH or concentrated regime. Such results are explained in terms of magnetic dipolar interactions. We report on the suitability of core/shell nanoparticles (NPs) for magnetic fluid hyperthermia in a self-regulated and theranostic approach. Aqueous magnetic colloids based on core/shell ZnxMnyFezO4@γ-Fe2O3 and ZnxCoyFezO4@γ-Fe2O3 NPs were produced by a three-step chemical synthesis. Systematic deviations from stoichiometry were observed with increasing Zn substitution for both series of samples. We investigated how the chemical composition affects the saturation magnetization, magnetic anisotropy, and thermomagnetic properties of these core/shell NPs. The heating efficiency through specific power absorption (SPA) was analyzed in the framework of the linear response theory. SPA values obtained for NPs present a different contrast of anisotropy between the core and shell materials, indicating no evidence of the contribution of enhanced exchange coupling to the heating efficiency.

Ultrasmall magnetic particles are notorious for exhibiting a magnetization increase even at quite intense applied fields, behavior which can be interpreted as a non-saturation of the magnetic disordered shell even if the nanoparticle magnetization is reversible. In this work we study two kinds of ultrasmall core@shell nanoparticles (3 nm) with contrasting core anisotropy, composed of MnFe2O4 and CoFe2O4 cores covered by a thin maghemite layer. In order to investigate the saturation criterion associated to the closure of major loops (in contrast to minor loops), we use several procedures to determine, at moderate fields, if the effective anisotropy energy barrier is overcome or not. Firstly, we carefully evaluate the closure field of the hysteresis loop, interpreted as the effective anisotropy field, correspondent to two different contributions. One, arising from the nanoparticle core, is related to the coercivity and the other one is associated to pinned spins of the nanoparticle shell. Secondly, the ZFC-FC magnetization measurements taken at different fields give us information about both the anisotropy energy barrier distribution and the thermal dependence of effective anisotropy field. Thirdly, forced minor loops are performed, measured after either ZFC or FC processes, to counter-check the effective magnetic anisotropy at low temperature of both samples. Finally, we perform major hysteresis loop calculations in order to better understand the magnetization processes involved. To go further, we propose in this study a procedure to extract information about the two contributions which composes the effective magnetic anisotropy field.

A conversão de energia eletromagnética em calor, promovida por nanopartículas (NPs) magnéticas submetidas a campos magnéticos alternados, consiste em uma estratégia promissora no tratamento de enfermidades como o câncer por possibilitar um tratamento localizado. Esta tese apresenta um estudo experimental sobre o potencial de NPs de ferritas de Zn-Mn para aplicações em magnetohipertermia. Foram sintetizados diferentes fluidos magnéticos de dupla camada elétrica (EDF-MF) baseados em NPs núcleo/casca de composição ZnxMnyFewO4@-Fe2O3, com diferentes diâmetros e proporções de Zn/Mn. Observou-se um desvio estequiométrico sistemático com o aumento do teor de Zn e da concentração de base alcalina utilizada na coprecipitação hidrotérmica. Todas as NPs sintetizadas apresentaram uma estrutura cristalina cúbica do tipo espinélio e a composição núcleo/casca das mesmas foi evidenciada por técnicas de análise química e microscopia eletrônica de transmissão. As propriedades magnéticas das NPs foram investigadas utilizando fluidos magnéticos em regime diluído. Medidas da dependência térmica da magnetização acima da temperatura ambiente demostraram uma redução na temperatura de Curie com o aumento de teor de Zn. Por fim, ensaios de magnetohipertermia permitiram investigar a eficiência das NPs desta tese como fontes de calor, avaliando desde características intrínsecas das NPs (diâmetro, magnetização de saturação e anisotropia) até influências do comportamento coletivo. Os resultados demostraram que para NPs dispersas em EDL-MF, a interação dipolar magnética e a formação de agregados reduzem a eficiência de aquecimento das NPs. The conversion of electromagnetic energy into heat, promoted by magnetic NPs when submitted to a time-varying magnetic field is a promising strategy in the treatment of infirmities such as cancer, giving the possibility of a localized treatment. This thesis presents an experimental study on the potential of Zn-Mn ferrite based NPs for magnetohyperthermia applications. Electric Double Layered Magnetic Fluids (EDL-MF) based on core/shell ZnxMnyFewO4@-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) with different diameters and Zn/Mn proportions have been synthesized. Systematic stoichiometric deviations were observed with increasing Zn content and alkaline base concentration during hydrothermal coprecipitation. All synthesized NPs presented a cubic spinel crystalline structure. The core/shell composition of the NPs was evidenced by chemical analysis and transmission electron microscopy. The NPs’ magnetic properties were investigated measuring magnetic fluids in dilute regimes. Measurements of the thermal dependence above room temperature demonstrated a reduction in Curie temperature with increasing Zn content. Finally, magnetohyperthermia measurements investigated the efficiency of our NPs as heat sources, evaluating NPs’ intrinsic characteristics (diameter, saturation magnetization and anisotropy), as well as collective behavior. The results showed that for NPs dispersed in EDL-MF, the magnetic dipolar interaction and the formation of aggregates reduce the heating efficiency of NPs.

Nanopartículas de ferritas de Zn-Mn são materiais promissores para aplicações biomédicas, especialmente em tratamento de tumores baseados em magneto-hipertermia, por apresentarem propriedades magnéticas termo-sensíveis principalmente relacionadas à composição química e distribuição catiônica. Neste trabalho foram elaborados fluidos magnéticos de dupla camada elétrica, baseados em nanocristais de ferrita mista de Zn-Mn. A dispersão destes em meio ácido é obtida após um tratamento hidrotérmico que promove um enriquecimento de ferro na superfície, fornecendo uma proteção contra a dissolução. As nanopartículas dos ferrofluidos sintetizados são portanto do tipo core/shell de ZnxMn(1-x)Fe2O4@?-Fe2O3 (x=0,1 a 0,9) com um núcleo de ferrita de Zn-Mn recoberto por uma camada superficial de maguemita. Para cada amostra, determinamos, a partir de dosagens químicas e difração de raios-X, o tamanho das partículas, a proporção de cada fase, a espessura da camada de maguemita e a fração volumétrica de partículas em dispersão. Medidas de magnetização a 300 K em função do campo aplicado foram realizadas em soluções diluídas utilizando um magnetômetro de amostra vibrante (VSM-PPMS). Nesse regime, as propriedades observadas são decorrentes de partículas individuais já que o ferrofluido pode ser considerado como um gás de partículas sem interação. As curvas obtidas não apresentam remanência e coercividade, apresentando um comportamento paramagnético gigante. Através do formalismo de Langevin, que considera a contribuição de cada partícula ponderada por uma distribuição log-normal de tamanhos, foi possível extrair valores de magnetização de saturação, tamanho médio de partículas e polidispersão. O tamanho, assim como a magnetização de saturação, diminui com o teor de zinco. Através de medidas de susceptibilidade DC após um congelamento em ausência de campo obteve-se a variação térmica da magnetização em baixo campo. As curvas, típicas de partículas superparamagnéticas, apresentam um máximo relacionado com a temperatura de bloqueio. O valor extraído da constante de anisotropia é aproximadamente duas ordens de grandeza maior que o valor do material maciço, provavelmente relacionada com uma contribuição de superfície. _______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT Zn-Mn ferrites nanoparticles are promising materials for biomedical applications, especially as magneto-hyperthermia agents in tumor treatments because they present very attractive temperature-sensitive magnetic properties, mainly related to their chemical composition and cation distribution. In this work, we elaborated electric double layered magnetic fluids based on mixed Zn-Mn ferrites nanocrystals. Their dispersion in acidic medium is achieved by using a hydrothermal treatment that creates an iron-rich superficial layer protecting them from dissolution. The synthesized nanoparticles are then of core-shell type, based on ZnxMn(1-x)Fe2O4 @ ?-Fe2O3 (x=0,1 a 0,9), with a core of Zn-Mn ferrite surrounded by a maghemite shell. For all the samples, chemical titrations and X-rays diffraction measurements have been used to determine the nanoparticle size, the fraction of each phase, the thickness of the maghemite superficial layer and the volume fraction of nanoparticles in the dispersion. Magnetization measurements at 300K as a function of applied field were performed in a VSM magnetometer, for diluted samples. In this regime, the observed properties are characteristics of individual particles since the ferrofluid can be considered as a gas of non interacting ones. The obtained curves do not present coercivity and remanence and are typical of giant paramagnetic behavior. Through the Langevin’s formalism, which considers a log-normal weighted contribution of each individual particle, it was possible to obtain the saturation magnetization, the particle mean size and polidispersity. The size as well as the magnetization decreases when the zinc content increases. Through DC magnetization measurements performed under Zero Field-Cooling procedure, we obtained the temperature dependence of the magnetization in a small applied field. The curves, typical of superparamagnetic behavior, present a maximum at a temperature related to the blocking temperature. The extracted value of the anisotropy constant is approximately two orders of magnitude larger than the bulk one, probably due to a surface contribution to the magnetic anisotropy.

Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro Tecnológico, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciência e Engenharia de Materiais, Florianópolis, 2011 Devido à importância energética do petróleo no mundo, um grande número de estudos sobre o escoamento bifásico em meios porosos têm sido desenvolvidos. Contudo, ainda não há compreensão plena dos mecanismos associados a este tipo de escoamento, como por exemplo, a formação de emulsões e espumas em reservatórios de petróleo, que causam inconvenientes operacionais dentro da indústria petrolífera e apresentam um desafio tecnológico. Neste trabalho de dissertação foi analisado um dos principais mecanismos de quebra de gotas e bolhas dentro de um meio poroso, que ocorre quando um fluido não molhante atravessa uma garganta de poro inicialmente preenchida por um fluido molhante, mecanismo conhecido pela literatura como snap-off. Experimentos de drenagem (óleo/ar e óleo/água) foram conduzidos em um micromodelo, estrutura artificial que busca certa representatividade do meio poroso e proporciona uma adequada visualização do comportamento da interface ao longo do escoamento. Uma vez que o snap-off ocorre em escala de poro, foi fabricado um micromodelo em acrílico constituído de um canal triangular com garganta, representando uma garganta de poro. Nos experimentos foram utilizados quatro óleos minerais, de diferentes propriedades e variou-se a vazão volumétrica a fim de obter diferentes números capilares na garganta. Foram investigadas as influências de propriedades relacionadas aos fluidos e ao escoamento no mecanismo do snap-off, como viscosidade dinâmica, tensão interfacial e número capilar. Pôde-se avaliar a influência destes parâmetros no tamanho das bolhas formadas, bem como no tempo para a quebra destas e freqüência associada. Estes resultados permitem conhecer as características das bolhas formadas em função dos parâmetros operacionais ao longo da extração do petróleo.
