Inadequate disposal of urban solid waste (USW) contaminates the soil, groundwater, bodies of surface water and the atmosphere, due to the emission of polluting gases. It causes urban flooding due to the obstruction of storm-water drainage systems caused by accumulated USW. Carried by rainwater, it also, among other environmental events, affects the macro- and micro-climate, raising the local and global temperature. In this scenario the present study asks how innovation in the management of urban solid waste can contribute to social and environmental innovation. The general objective of this work was to study the management of USW in the Amazon sub-region, given the advent of social and environmental innovation. To obtain its results, it took the following as its specific objectives: (1) interpreting the current management of the USW of the sub region of interest; (2) describing the ultimate destination of the USW; and (3) proposing models of socioenvironmental innovation for the management of USW in the local sub-regions. The case study method was applied, using the necessary procedures. It was observed that the management of USW in the studied sub region is restricted to public power facilities, where it employs few processes or technologies. Regarding the final disposal of the USW, the municipalities have not instituted any separation of recyclables from waste products and hence they send all domestic and industrial waste to landfill sites as if nothing was recyclable. In addition, most municipalities continue to dump contaminants in their old sites, pending decisions to close them and ask responsible bodies to supervise them. This paper is an academic contribution to the improvement of waste management. It proposes innovative USW management practices, based on the principle that the Polluter Pays; initiatives that favour socioenvironmental innovation must be substantiated. This research is of interest to scholars working on sustainability and to managers concerned with issues related to socioenvironmental management.

Entrepreneurship is an effective way of overcoming conjunctural factors; it is also a dignifying solution for all business-oriented people. This study aims to answer the following question: how to enable the social reinsertion of therapeutic communities’ graduates by resorting to the concepts of entrepreneurship? It also aims to investigate the skills of individuals cared for at therapeutic centers and who are in the final stage of drug addiction treatment, attempting to promote their social reintegration, job creation and sustainable income. To achieve this goal, this study’s specific objectives are: (1) present the practical applicability of entrepreneurial concepts as sustainable economic activities; (2) characterize the fundamental aspects for the development of entrepreneurial skills considering contextualized reality drawing on Bloom’s Taxonomy; (3) suggest re-adequacy of social reintegration public policies, considering the concepts of social innovation with sustainability. Here, Case Study Method and procedures such as instrumentalization of an introductory workshop, development of participants’ skills; gathering, analysis and interpretation of data are applied. As a result, thirty graduates from therapeutic communities had the chance to get in touch with the concepts of entrepreneurship as a tool for their social reinsertion. It is expected that this outcome may contribute to the improvement in their quality of life, considering that the study is based on factual reality and that its findings can be reproduced in situations of similar reality. This work is relevant to both public and private entities engaged with social responsibility and sustainability.

In organizations, we seek to adapt to the good practices of a relationship with nature, transforming technologies, processes and structural and productive redesign. Reflections such as these motivate research supported by the Institutionalist Theory and the assumptions of sustainability. The general objective here is to carry out a theoretical-conceptual study on the instrumental character of the concept of sustainability in focusing to the of institutionalist theory; and to the results, the specific objectives of contextualizing the concept of sustainability (1), addressing the main concepts raised in the face of institutionalist theory (2), and analyzing the approach of the conceptual perspectives considered in this research (3). The question to be answered in this study is: what is the instrumental character of the concept of sustainability in the face of institutionalist theory? The Content Analysis Method and data analysis techniques are applied in qualitative research, such as cleavage and categorization. As a result, it brings a virtuous circle of conceptual relation in evidence; points out inequality of behavior in organizations, making it difficult to achieve sustainability; Criticism points to the lack of employee awareness of the rules. We also look at organizational levels that reflect on sustainability. Conceptual applicability converts the commitment to protect and conserve natural resources, while at the same time channeling real benefits to all who are around the institution that promotes the activities. These concepts will result in a balance between the constraints that lead to scarcity and progress on the sustainability tripod; are isomorphic measures that are somehow beneficial in the relationship between the environment and the social and economic.

The objective of this research was to identify which are the managerial competences perceived as essential by the managers of micro and small active companies, located in the city of Porto Velho, State of Rondônia - Brazil. The relevance of the research is located in the managerial field, as a context of micro and small companies in developing regions, and, besides that, there is a theoretical expansion in the identification of managerial competencies essential to the management of micro and small companies in countries in economic and social development. The research model is the quantitative method, applied to a sample of 347 micro and small entrepreneurs from the universe of 10,221 companies, with sampling for convenience and accessibility, and data collected using a Likert scale. Therefore, the research identifies the factors that make up managerial skills, such as the dimensions “focus, production and development”, which encompasses the vision focused on the interior of the company and at work; “planning and control”, with an emphasis on plans and their execution, especially on the necessary resources; “market differentiation”, with a focus on high competition and consumers; and, finally, “training and investments”, which focuses on investments in labor and the acquisition of financial resources for the organization. These four factors synthesize the grouping of managerial skills essential for the management of micro and small companies, according to the perception of the managers participating in the sample, and, if applied to the management of micro and small companies, positively impact the survival of small businesses located in developing geographic regions.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the water quality of Rio Bonzinho in the city of Ji-Paraná, RO. We established 02 sampling points in the river. We analyzed the following variables of quality: fecal coliform, biochemical oxygen demand, phosphates, nitrates, dissolved oxygen, pH, total solids, temperature and turbidity. Results were analyzed against quality standards for Class 2 and grouped to calculate the Water Quality Index (WQI). Most variables met the quality requirements for Class 2 and WQI was interpreted as "Regular".
