Abstract

This issue of Études britanniques contemporaines emanates from contributions to a workshop of the Société d’Études Anglaises Contemporaines (SEAC) at the 2022 conference of the Société des Anglicistes de l’Enseignement Supérieur in Clermont-Ferrand. The conference revolved around the notions of faults and fault lines and gave contributors the opportunity to probe the polysemic dimensions of these concepts in 20th and 21st British literature and culture. Starting from the concrete meaning of faults and fault lines in geology, articles embrace broader contexts in which splits, cracks, ruptures and rifts can lead to long-lasting divisions but may also pave the way for new explorations. In addition to contributions engaging with the notions of faults and fault lines, this issue includes an essay on John Lanchester’s Capital (2012) and two reviews of books on modernism and the recycling of Virginia Woolf in contemporary art and literature.

Abstract

Contemporary novels about refugees often question the appropriateness of traditional narrative forms to relate stories of forced migration which involve a fragmentation of the self and of one’s sense of reality. Writers opt instead for forms which are as disjointed as the experience of refugees themselves. This paper explores the precarious balance between a poetics of rupture and an aesthetics of connectivity in two novels about refugees: Exit West (2017) by Mohsin Hamid and Travelers (2019) by Helon Habila. It first examines the strategies developed by both authors to destabilize form in order to reflect the refugees’ shattering ordeals during and after their forced displacements. The multiplicity of stories as well as the shifts in focalization and narrative modes testify to the impossibility of inscribing refugees’ experiences within a single coherent and homogeneous pattern. However, Hamid and Habila also draw from the potentialities of the novelistic genre to devise formal ways of connecting apparently disparate story lines and thereby suggest possibilities for cross-cultural solidarity between refugees who share a common condition of vulnerability.

This issue of Études britanniques contemporaines emanates from the contributions to a workshop of the Société d’Études Anglaises Contemporaines (SEAC), organised by Catherine Bernard at the 2021 conference of the Société des Anglicistes de l’Enseignement Supérieur. The conference revolved around the issue of ‘RenaissanceS’ and it gave contributors the opportunity to explore the influence of the Renaissance period on contemporary literary productions and to examine the modes of aesthetic renewal, reinvention and revival of past forms, subjects and literary genres. In addition to articles engaging with the notion of rebirth in contemporary novels and poems, this issue includes an essay on the concept of exhaustion in Samuel Beckett’s Endgame.

Abstract

Based on the archives of the British writer Julian Barnes relating to Flaubert’s Parrot (1984), the paper proposes to explore several elements of the genesis of this transgeneric book as well as some aspects of the creative process in order to determine the ways in which Barnes chose to approach Flaubert’s work and life. The writer’s travel notebooks, notes, plans and drafts, as well as the letter he sent his editor to defend his manuscript, shed light on the original means chosen by Barnes to celebrate Flaubert while diverging from traditional biographical and critical approaches.

Abstract

This interview with Ian McEwan traces his fictional production from his early work published in the 1970s to the novella Nutshell (2016), with discussions of Enduring Love (1997), Saturday (2005), On Chesil Beach (2007) and The Children Act (2014). Ian McEwan talks about his relation to literary tradition, his use of research, his interest in the form of the novella, his love for music and his work as a screenplay writer, among other topics. This is an edited synthesis of two interviews conducted by Vanessa Guignery at the Théâtre des Subsistances in Lyon for the opening of the ‘Assises Internationales du Roman’ organised by the Villa Gillet on 21 May 2018 and at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon on 22 May 2018. The interviews were transcribed with the very kind help of Diane Gagneret, Natacha Lasorak, Héloïse Lecomte and Julia Siccardi. Abstract

The texts here gathered continue the tradition of the panels which conclude the yearly conferences of the Société d’Études Anglaises Contemporaines. This year, the panel turns not only to recent fiction writing or prose coming from Britain—in this case Iain Sinclair—, but also poetry as well as writing coming from world literature. The three contributions testify once more to the vibrancy of recent literature emerging in the British isles and to the increasingly complex nature of what can no longer be defined as strictly ‘British’ writing. As the recent evolution of the Man Booker Prize also shows, which is now awarded to a piece of fiction originally written in English and published in Britain, the increasing globalization of very recent fiction in English opens up new horizons for a ‘British’ literature which today can no longer be understood along the established frontiers distinguishing ‘British’ from ’post-colonial’ writing.

Abstract

This issue of Études britanniques contemporaines focuses on the specific forms of laughter, humour, comedy and satire in 20th–and 21st–century British literature and visual arts, and examines how writers and artists adopt, transform, redefine or subvert these modes while bearing in mind their often ambivalent dimension. The articles gathered here explore the relationship between laughter, satire and political criticism, and demonstrate that contemporary works generally no longer rely on the corrective function of satire and the exclusionary power of laughter, but favour a type of comedy that is fuelled by a humanist drive. One-third of the issue is more specifically devoted to the work of Jonathan Coe.

Abstract

B.S. Johnson’s ‘novel in a box’, The Unfortunates, is an original and moving elegy to the memory of his best friend who died of cancer at the age of 29, but the unbound format of the book and the unusual use of blanks have been dismissed by some critics as a mere manifestation of playfulness, a collection of tricks or gimmicks. My contention in this paper is that Johnson’s techniques, far from excluding affectivity and ethics, actually offer new ways of expressing emotion and giving a truthful account of feelings of pain, loss and mourning. On the one hand, the narrator is careful never to over-sentimentalise his discourse, hence instances of self-reflexive irony, mockery or derision to keep pathos at bay. On the other hand, this chronicle of a death foretold is a deeply-felt homage that involves narrator and reader in an ethical encounter with the absent Other.

12. A Fat Man on a Beach: Conflicting Horizons in B.S. Johnson’s Work

Abstract

This essay proposes to analyse the co-existence in B.S. Johnson’s work of two apparently very different horizons: on the one hand, the writer’s utopian quest for truth which he tries to convey as faithfully as possible in his texts and films, even while knowing he could never fully embrace it, and on the other hand his focus on objects and subjects that are intimate to him, confined within the limits of his own life, his own past, his own experiences. The paper examines this paradoxical opening and closing movement in Johnson’s last production, Fat Man on a Beach, a very original thirty-minute film shot only two weeks before he committed suicide. The film both flaunts its absolute honesty and sincerity by exposing its mechanisms and by defamiliarising viewing practices, and displays a solipsistic stance by focusing on Johnson’s personal experiences and obsessions. A comparison between the ending of the novel Trawl and the final elegiac scene of the film shows how Johnson’s commitment to truth entailed the testing of his own limits.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to bring face to face the spaces of the mind or ‘landscapes within’ and the open spaces or ‘landscapes without’ in Ben Okri’s The Famished Road, in order to question the supposed duality between the physical world and the imaginary or mythic one, which is reflected in the oscillation in Okri’s novel between the Western literary tradition of realism and the West African attachment to mythology and the supernatural. The multidimensionality of the forest will be examined firstly as the dwelling place of spirits and a space that is submitted to the ecological catastrophe of deforestation. The analysis will then move on to the open spaces the spirit-child Azaro feels inside him, landscapes that are both inscapes and means of escape. Through the poetic opening of these new ontological spaces, the narrator celebrates the power of limitless imagination, redefines the concepts of landscape, inner and outer space, and expands the dimensions of the real world.

For the present round table that brought the SEAC 2014 fall conference to a close, we chose to focus on trends, and literary practices liable to further displace the focus, from the evolution of publishing trends as evinced in the 2013 Booker Prize nominee list to the creativeness of translation in recent English fiction or the emergence of hybrid fictional forms that confront the radicality of experience.

16. Zadie Smith’s NW or the art of line-crossing

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine NW, Zadie Smith’s fourth novel, through the notion of crossings, which can be viewed as ethical connections between characters but also as geographical journeys across London, movements along the social scale, multicultural encounters, weavings of various literary traditions and lineages, as well as intertwining of high and popular culture. In each of these areas, the question that is raised in relation to Smith’s novel is whether it is possible to step across the lines that strictly divide people, districts, races, social classes and cultural objects into separate categories and come up with an invigorating mélange, or if rigid lines of separation still persist. The argument will draw from David Lodge’s metaphor of the crossroads (when he wondered which directions the novelist of the second half of the twentieth century could take), as well as from Deleuze and Guattari’s concepts of lines of “segmentarity” and lines of flight, along which individual and collective lives are ordered or fractured. The aim will be to try and delineate the contours of British contemporary society and identity as depicted in NW.

This paper proposes to examine Zadie Smith’s NW (2012) in the light of her essay ‘Two Directions for the Novel’, in which she explores two roads for novel writing: ‘lyrical realism’ and ‘constructive deconstruction’. In NW, Smith uses a range of narrative techniques that are indebted to realist, modernist and postmodernist traditions, and by analysing some of them, this paper aims to find out where Smith situates herself on the literary map in 2012, how she deals with the legacies of the past and what new lines she may be drawing for herself. More than forty years after David Lodge’s essay ‘The Novelist at the Crossroads’, one may wonder whether Smith finds herself at an ‘anxiety crossroads’, to quote her own expression. Her mixture of stream-of-consciousness technique, straightforward narrative and metafictional devices shows that she chooses neither the highway of the well-made novel nor the side road of downright deconstruction, but embraces several directions without trying to reconcile them.

Abstract

This paper proposes to examine the apparent contradiction in B.S. Johnson’s novels between, on the one hand, the defamiliarisation of devices so as to lay bare all fictional effects and underline the distance between the referent and its graphic inscription, and on the other hand, the implementation of innovative formal strategies meant to reflect reality as faithfully as possible. This double movement (revealing the distance, reducing the distance) will be analysed in relation to Johnson’s theory based on a poetics of truth which rejects the lies of the novelistic form and places the autobiographical subject at the heart of the work. In the process, we will determine which forms of mimesis and of relationship to the real Johnson manages to establish.

22. The Destabilisation of Genre in Alain de Botton’s Iconotexts

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyse the ways in which the combination of text and image in Alain de Botton’s works contributes to the destabilisation of genre. The generic hybridity of de Botton’s texts, oscillating between fiction and non-fiction, is reinforced by the insertion of images which repeatedly suspend the act of reading and sometimes throw doubt on the ontological status of the books. The analysis of the titles of a few books and the examination of the cover illustration for The Romantic Movement reveal how the frontiers between genres and semiotic codes are blurred from the start. If some images within the books merely illustrate or clarify the text and serve a didactic purpose, others deconstruct some of the conventional strategies of genres such as the novel, biography or travel writing through parody, irony or displacement.

This paper aims at analysing the twists and turns of the narration in The Book of Mrs Noah by Michèle Roberts, in which the main narrative serpentine line is endlessly interrupted by secondary, digressive lines which seem to delay infinitely the perspective of a telos. The analysis will focus on the one hand on the manifestations of entropy as disorder, blurring and regression, and on the other hand on the repetitive and circular structure of the book. A resolutely creative journey emerges from this clash of contradictory forces, which leads to the advent of writers and writing experiences and celebrates the ‘vitality of chaos’ (Glissant).

This introduction examines transmission through the lens of intergenerational legacy and inheritance, literary and aesthetic filiations and transfers, contagion and contamination, memory and history, and identifies the potential obstacles to transmission and ways to circumvent them.

Les écrivains optent plutôt pour des formes qui sont aussi disjointes que l’expérience des réfugiés eux-mêmes. Cet article explore l’équilibre précaire entre une poétique de la rupture et une esthétique de la connectivité dans deux romans sur les réfugiés : Exit West (2017) de Mohsin Hamid et Travelers (2019) de Helon Habila. Il examine tout d’abord les stratégies développées par les deux auteurs pour déstabiliser la forme afin de refléter les épreuves bouleversantes traversées par des réfugiés pendant et après leurs déplacements forcés. La multiplicité des récits ainsi que les changements de focalisation et de modes narratifs témoignent de l’impossibilité d’inscrire les expériences des réfugiés dans un seul schéma cohérent et homogène. Néanmoins, Hamid et Habila exploitent également les potentialités du genre romanesque pour imaginer des moyens formels de relier des histoires apparemment disparates et suggèrent ainsi des possibilités de solidarité interculturelle entre des réfugiés qui partagent une condition commune de vulnérabilité.

Cet article cherche à montrer en quoi la combinaison texte/image dans les ouvrages d’Alain de Botton contribue à la déstabilisation des genres. L’hybridité générique des textes de cet auteur, oscillant entre fiction et non-fiction, est renforcée par l’insertion d’images qui suspendent sans cesse la lecture et jettent parfois le doute sur le statut ontologique des ouvrages. L’analyse des titres de quelques livres et l’examen de l’illustration de couverture de The Romantic Movement révèlent combien les frontières entre les genres et entre les codes sémiotiques sont brouillées d’emblée. Si certaines images insérées dans les ouvrages se contentent d’illustrer ou de clarifier le texte et répondent à un souci didactique, d’autres déconstruisent certaines stratégies conventionnelles de genres tels que le roman, la biographie ou le récit de voyage, par le biais de la parodie, l’ironie ou le déplacement. The aim of this paper is to analyse the ways in which the combination of text and image in Alain de Botton’s works contributes to the destabilisation of genre. The generic hybridity of de Botton’s texts, oscillating between fiction and non-fiction, is reinforced by the insertion of images which repeatedly suspend the act of reading and sometimes throw doubt on the ontological status of the books. The analysis of the titles of a few books and the examination of the cover illustration for The Romantic Movement reveal how the frontiers between genres and semiotic codes are blurred from the start. If some images within the books merely illustrate or clarify the text and serve a didactic purpose, others deconstruct some of the conventional strategies of genres such as the novel, biography or travel writing through parody, irony or displacement.

Abstract

This issue of Études britanniques contemporaines emanates from the contributions to a workshop of the Société d’Études Anglaises Contemporaines (SEAC), organised by Catherine Bernard at the 2021 conference of the Société des Anglicistes de l’Enseignement Supérieur. The conference revolved around the issue of ‘RenaissanceS’ and it gave contributors the opportunity to explore the influence of the Renaissance period on contemporary literary productions and to examine the modes of aesthetic renewal, reinvention and revival of past forms, subjects and literary genres. In addition to articles engaging with the notion of rebirth in contemporary novels and poems, this issue includes an essay on the concept of exhaustion in Samuel Beckett’s Endgame. Ce numéro d’Études britanniques contemporaines est issu des travaux de l’atelier de la Société d’Études Anglaises Contemporaines (SEAC), organisé par Catherine Bernard lors du congrès de la Société des Anglicistes de l’Enseignement Supérieur de 2021. Ce congrès avait pour thème « RenaissanceS » et il fut l’occasion pour les contributeurs d’explorer l’influence de la période de la Renaissance sur les productions littéraires contemporaines et d’examiner les modes de renouvellement esthétique, de réinvention et de reprise des formes, sujets et genres littéraires du passé. Abstract

International audience; The aim of this article is to examine the meticulous way in which Julian Barnes created his characters in the diptych Talking It Over (1991) and Love, etc. (2000) through an exploration of his archives, more specifically his preliminary notes, sketches and drafts. These archival documents shed light on the protagonists’ main characteristics and functions which Barnes sketched from the start. They also reveal the writer’s great care in devising idiosyncratic languages for each character, which are reflective of their personalities. The paper comments in particular on the linguistic choices made by Barnes to ensure that each voice was singular. The writer was also attentive to the balance of power between the characters and the genetic dossier for the two novels reveals that he devised the female character in the trio as the “prime mover”. By casting light on the living process of literary creation, this article uncovers the intricate palimpsest of Barnes’s work and helps understand the writer’s unique approach to characterisation.

Abstract

International audience; In an interview about Crossing the River, a novel which resonates with the voices of the victims of slavery, racism and marginalisation over three centuries and three continents, Caryl Phillips declared: “I wanted to make an affirmative connection, not a connection based upon exploitation or suffering or misery, but a connection based upon a kind of survival”. Rather than follow the lines of Primo Levi who insisted on the shame of survivors or of Adorno who referred to their “drastic guilt”, my aim in this essay is to explore the affirmative connections between survivors of genocides, conflicts and disasters at different times and places of history as depicted in Julian Barnes’s A History of the World in 10 ½ Chapters (1989) and in several novels by Caryl Phillips, notably Higher Ground (1989), Crossing the River (1993) and The Nature of Blood (1997). Drawing, among other sources, from Michael Rothberg’s concepts of “knots of memory” and “multidirectional memory”, I will examine how Barnes and Phillips relate histories and memories of slavery, genocide, colonialism and the Holocaust across different periods and generations and create connections between characters from various times and places, who survived – either literally or through the means of narration – thanks to unexpected resources of resilience, solidarity and interdependence in the face of vulnerability and precariousness.

National audience; Romancier inclassable, essayiste érudit et curieux, lecteur passionné, analyste pointilleux de la société britannique, critique d'art attentif, formidable conteur d'histoires imaginaires, lexicographe en quête du mot juste, Julian Barnes a créé, en explorant de nouvelles formes littéraires et en renouvelant les traditions, une œuvre riche et variée, emblématique d'une génération de grands écrivains britanniques.Ont été ici retenus cinq romans majeurs, marqués par des tonalités distinctes, publiés entre 1984 et 2018. Roman insolite, mêlant une expérimentation formelle à des jeux intertextuels, Le Perroquet de Flaubert brosse un portrait composite de l'ermite de Croisset. England, England (1998) emprunte les voies de la satire et de la dérision grinçante pour dresser un tableau dégradé de l'Angleterre et de son histoire, où le simulacre l'emporte sur l'original, où l'ultralibéralisme et le tourisme de masse triomphent. Abstract

En 1984, Anita Brookner et Julian Barnes apparurent tous deux sur la liste du Booker Prize, respectivement pour Hotel du Lac et Flaubert’s Parrot. Bien que ces deux romans et l’œuvre fictionnelle des deux auteurs dans leur ensemble presentent de grandes differences, ce qui explique qu’ils n’aient pas encore donne lieu a des travaux critiques comparatifs, les chemins de Brookner et Barnes se sont croises a plusieurs reprises, en partie en raison d’interets communs pour les arts visuels mais aussi pour la culture et la litterature francaises. Une breve presentation de ces points de convergence est suivie des reponses de Julian Barnes a trois questions relatives a Anita Brookner.

International audience; Cet article s'intéresse à l'obsession flaubertienne de l'écrivain britannique Julian Barnes, en particulier dans Le Perroquet de Flaubert (1984). Par une analyse des formes d'intertextualité, d'hypertextualité et de pastiche, il s'agit de déterminer si l'ouvrage le plus ouvertement flaubertien de Barnes est à envisager comme un panégyrique qui rend compte d'un espace littéraire saturé et condamné à un travail de seconde main, ou si l'auteur use suffisamment des outils de la subversion, de l'ironie et de la déconstruction pour parvenir à se libérer du maître et laisser entendre une voix singulière. L'article montre également la façon dont d'autres écrivains britanniques contemporains, dans la lignée de Barnes, se sont approprié l'héritage de Madame Bovary pour en proposer des réécritures innovantes entre répétition et différence, révérence et originalité, psittacisme et émancipation.

Conversations with Ben Okri collects twenty-six interviews that range from 1986 to 2023 and reflect the international resonance of Nigerian writer Ben Okri's work. The reader is given access to the various phases of Okri's life and career, beginning with his childhood (b. 1959) and upbringing in Nigeria and the publication of his early short stories and novels. The interviews also explore the tremendous success of The Famished Road (for which Okri became the first Black African writer to receive the Booker Prize in 1991) and the dazzling creativity of his subsequent work in a multiplicity of literary genres. The volume offers insight into the writer's creative process and his unique views on literature, history, memory, politics, freedom, spirituality, and environmental issues. The conversations often veer into fascinating philosophical discussions about the nature of art and reality, the value of myth, and the dynamics of storytelling.Since the publication of his first novel in 1980, Okri has encouraged his readers to open their minds and eyes to new modes of perceiving reality. Convinced of the universality of art, he has been intent on redreaming the world from a variety of perspectives in poems, essays, short stories, novels, and plays written over a period of more than forty years. Throughout his career, Ben Okri has never stopped experimenting with new forms, creating the stoku (a mixture of short story and haiku), endowing his fictional and nonfictional creations with poetic undertones, and collaborating with visual artists, musicians, and dancers.

Abstract

International audience; The last decades have seen a revival of fragmentation in British and American works of fiction that deny linearity, coherence and continuity in favour of disruption, gaps and fissures. Authors such as Ali Smith, David Mitchell and David Shields have sought new ways of representing our global, media-saturated contemporary experience which differ from modernist and postmodernist experimentations from which the writers nevertheless draw inspiration. This volume aims to investigate some of the most important contributions to fragmentary literature from British and American writers since the 1990s, with a particular emphasis on texts released in the twenty-first century. The chapters within examine whether contemporary forms of literary fragmentation constitute a return to the modernist episteme or the fragmented literature of exhaustion of the 1960s, mark a continuity with postmodernist aesthetics or signal a deviation from past models and an attempt to reflect today’s accelerated culture of social media and over-communication.

Abstract

International audience; Cet article s’intéresse à la manière dont les romanciers britanniques contemporains Julian Barnes, Jonathan Coe et Graham Swift inscrivent le motif de la pluie dans leurs ouvrages. Outre les modalités comiques, les écrivains développent le topos de la pluie en tant que synecdoque de l’Angleterre ou de l’anglicité, ou bien corrélat objectif pour refléter une humeur morose ou nostalgique. Barnes, Coe et Swift dépassent toutefois ces usages conventionnels pour adopter une posture toute postmoderniste : conscients du symbolisme éculé de la pluie, ils l’exploitent de façon ironique, signalant par là-même au lecteur leur familiarité avec les clichés littéraires qu’ils déploient pour mieux les subvertir. Par ce biais, les écrivains réinvestissent le motif de la pluie pour mieux exprimer sur un mode détourné la vulnérabilité ou la peine de certains personnages.

International audience; Après une présentation générale de la situation de l’esclavage dans la Province du Cap, historiquement et tel qu’il est décrit dans The Slave Book (1998), deuxième roman de Rayda Jacobs, écrivaine sud-africaine, l'article s’intéresse à la place et à la voix des esclaves musulmans au Cap, dans le contexte historique et fictionnel. L'analyse porte ensuite sur le mystère de la voix narrative dans The Slave Book, afin de mettre en lumière les difficultés auxquelles la voix se trouve confrontée quand elle est en état d’asservissement.
