Side by Side Agency (SBS) is a student-led educational non-profit based in the Greater Toronto Area. We began by providing free virtual tutoring and mentorship for K-12 students to compensate for pandemic-related educational disruptions. When school services returned, we switched gears to focus on persisting barriers to academia for marginalized students primarily addressing inconsistencies in research education across Ontario. Literature on Canadian undergraduate students’ literacy and research skills affirmed our personal difficulties with entering the research field, motivating us to develop a free, accessible, and supportive beginner research program for high school students. The 2021 SBS Summer Research Program (SBS SRP) was developed by undergraduate volunteers and included weekly lessons, workshops, homework, and guest speakers to cultivate research skills and inspire curiosity. Students worked with undergraduate mentors to pursue research projects of their interest in fields such as neuroscience, public health, and sociology. SBS SRP culminated with our conference, where students presented their literature reviews, proposed studies, and informative social media campaigns. RESUMO Nos dias de hoje, a população mundial exige o consumo de alimentos de qualidade, sem resíduos de produtos químicos. Desempenho (produção e qualidade do leite, peso e condição corporal) e sanidade (mastite e infestação por ecto e endoparasitas) foram acompanhados em oito vacas leiteiras mestiças de um rebanho de 40 (20%), que recebeu diariamente produtos homeopáticos comerciais no concentrado para o controle de endo e ectoparasitas e mastite. No período de nove meses, que correspondeu a toda uma lactação, não houve necessidade de medicar com produtos alopáticos nenhuma vaca do rebanho, o que demonstrou ser possível criar vacas leiteiras mestiças não utilizando produtos químicos para o combate a parasitas (carrapato, mosca-do-chifre e verminose), ou antibióticos para o controle de mastite, e sem interferir na produtividade dos animais. ABSTRACT Nowadays the world population demands food of good quality, without any residues from chemical products. Eight cows from a herd of 40, which were consuming commercial homeopathic medicines at the daily concentration for control of endoand ectoparasites, were monitored in terms of their performance (production and quality of milk, body score and body weight) and sanitary aspects (parasites infestation and mastitis) during the lactation period. It was not necessary to give any allopathic (conventional) medicines to control mastitis or parasites (ticks, horn-fly, verminosis) in any cow of the herd during the nine months of the lactation period. The results showed that it is possible to produce milk without using chemical products, and not interfering in the productivity of the crossbred animals.

Objetivou-se avaliar o comportamento ingestivo de novilhos Nelores alimentados com dietas contendo ureia encapsulada ou não, em quatro períodos da terminação dos animais confinados. Foram utilizados 32 e 28; 24 e 21; 16 e 14; 8 e 7 animais para as dietas sem e com ureia encapsulada nos 1º; 2º; 3º e 4º períodos, respectivamente. Cada período foi composto por 50 dias, com exceção do último que teve 45 dias. Os animais foram confinados em baias individuais. Cada avaliação, dentro do período, foi de 48 h consecutivas, com intervalos de observação de 10 minutos. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado em arranjo fatorial 2 x 4 e, para a comparação das médias, foi utilizado o teste “t” de student. Houve interação entre dietas e as avaliações nos períodos para o consumo e eficiência de ruminação da matéria seca, e para as demais variáveis estudadas não ocorreu interação. O tempo de ócio foi maior e o de ruminação foi menor para os animais que receberam a dieta sem ureia encapsulada em relação à dieta com ureia encapsulada. O tempo de alimentação dos animais foi maior para a avaliação do segundo período, porém não diferem do primeiro e quarto períodos. O tempo de ócio foi maior na avaliação do segundo período e semelhante com a avaliação no terceiro período. O comportamento ingestivo é alterado em diferentes períodos do confinamento e pela composição da dieta.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is affected by demographic, virological, clinical, and lifestyle-related factors and varies in different regions in Brazil or worldwide. The present study aimed to clarify the epidemiological patterns of HCV infection in the interior region of Brazil. METHODS: This study was conducted in the Southern Triangle Macro-region of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, according to the guidelines of the National Program for the Prevention and Control of Viral Hepatitis. The participants answered a structured questionnaire on social and epidemiological factors. Immunochromatographic rapid tests were used for the qualitative detection of antibodies against HCV in whole blood (Alere HCV® Code 02FK10) in adult subjects by a free-standing method. RESULTS: Of 24,085 tested individuals, 184 (0.76%) were anti-HCV positive. The majority of anti-HCV-positive individuals were born between 1951 and 1980 (n=146 [79.3%]), with 68 women and 116 men. Identified risk factors included syringe and/or needle sharing (p = 0.003), being in prison (p = 0.004), and having tattoos or piercings (p = 0.005) and were significantly associated with the decade of birth. CONCLUSIONS: The study shows the importance of testing populations at risk for HCV infection, including incarcerated individuals, those with tattoos or piercings, those who share or have shared syringes or needles, and those in high-risk birth cohorts (1950s, 1960s, and 1970s) in the Southern Triangle Macro-region.

Foram utilizadas cinco vacas mestiças Holandês × Gir, com aproximadamente 100 dias de lactação ao início do experimento e peso corporal aproximado de 550 kg, produzindo, em média, 15,2 ± 2,3 kg de leite por dia. Os animais foram arranjados num delineamento em quadrado latino 5×5. O tempo total de alimentação, ruminação e ócio, não foi alterado pelo tipo de silagem na dieta. As variáveis que compõem o comportamento ingestivo não foram afetadas quando as vacas receberam as diferentes silagens de milheto comparadas com silagem de milho. O tamanho de partículas entre 5 e 20 mm, a presença ou não de inoculante e o tipo de silagem com teores de MS em 28%, não afeta o tempo total de alimentação, ruminação e ócio em vacas mestiças Holandês Gir com média de produção de 15,2 kg por dia. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ingestive behavior of dairy cows fed corn and millet silage with a 5 mm particle size without inoculant, millet silage with a 5 mm particle size with inoculant, millet silage with a 20 mm particle size without inoculant, millet silage with a 20 mm particle size with inoculant. Five cows Holstein x Gir, with approximately 100 days of lactation at the beginning of the experiment and a mean body weight of 550 kg, producing an average of 15 kg of milk per day were used. The animals were arranged in a randomized 5 x 5 Latin square. The total feeding time, rumination time, chewing time, number of alimentary bolus, rumination time for bolus and number of chews was determined. The variables that make up the feeding behavior were not affected when the cows were fed different millet silages compared with corn silage. Cows fed corn silage and millet silage of 5 mm particle size had a higher intake of dry matter and neutral detergent fiber. A particle size between 5 and 20 mm, the presence or absence of inoculum and the type of silage with DM at 28%, does not affect the total feeding time, ruminating and resting of cows with an average production of 15.2 kg per day. The presence of the inoculant does not affect the intake of dry matter and neutral detergent fiber. Cows fed diets containing corn silage or pearl millet silage with a 5 mm particle size fed more DM. Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos da suplementação com fontes de minerais inorgânicos e orgânicos, na época das águas do ano, sobre o desempenho de novilhas leiteiras mestiças Gir x Holandês, com idade média de 13,6 ± 2,9 meses e peso corporal inicial de 176,8 ± 10,1kg, distribuídas em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, sendo considerado o módulo de pastejo (dois módulos/tratamento) como tratamento (fontes de minerais inorgânicos e orgânicos) e animais como repetição (16 animais/tratamento) em pastagem de Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst. ex. A. Rich.) Stapf. cv. Marandu, manejada em sistema intermitente. Ao final de cada ciclo de pastejo (42 dias) os animais foram pesados e mensurados quanto à altura na cernelha e perímetro torácico e, o peso corporal médio do lote foi usado para os cálculos de ajuste de carga. Com relação à oferta de forragem em matéria seca, não houve diferença entre os tratamentos, mas sim sobre os ciclos. A oferta de forragem média para os ciclos foi de 12kg matéria seca/100kg de peso corporal, com taxa de lotação de 4,19UA/ha. Não foram observados efeitos das fontes de minerais inorgânicos e orgânicos sobre o ganho médio diário de peso corporal e nas mensurações do perímetro torácico e na altura da cernelha. O manejo correto da pastagem na época das águas e a suplementação mineral adequada proporcionou excelente desempenho de novilhas leiteiras com ganhos médios de 0,680kg/dia. O desempenho de novilhas leiteiras recriadas a pasto foi semelhante quando suplementadas com fontes minerais inorgânicos ou orgânicos. The objective was to evaluate the effects of supplementation with sources of inorganic minerals and organic, in the rainy season of the year on the performance of dairy crossbred Gir x Holstein, with a mean age of 13.6 ± 2.9 months and body weight averaging 176.8 ± 10.1kg were assigned at random block design, the module (two module/treatment) is considered as the grazing treatment (inorganic minerals and organic sources) and animals such as repetition (16 animals / treatment) in pasture Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst. ex. A. Rich.) Stapf. cv. Marandu, managed under rotational grazing system. At the end of each grazing cycle (42 days) the animals were weighed and measured for height at withers and girth and the body weight average batch was used for calculation of load adjustment. With respect to the forage available did not differ between treatments, but on the cycles. The average forage available for the cycles was 12kg dry matter/100kg body weight with stocking rate of 4.19UA/ha. There were no effects of inorganic minerals and organic sources on the average daily gain of body weight and measurements in the height at withers and the girth. The correct management of grazing in the rainy season and the appropriate mineral supplementation provided an excellent performance of dairy heifers with average gains of 0.680 kg/day. The performance of dairy heifers rearing pasture was similar when supplemented with organic or inorganic mineral sources.

Foram utilizadas bezerras 3/4 Holandês x 1/4 Gir recém-nascidas, com peso vivo médio inicial de 35,71 kg, distribuídas pelos tratamentos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com seis repetições por tratamento. Na fase de aleitamento (0 - 56 dias de idade) os tratamentos consistiram em leite, sendo 2 litros pela manhã e 2 à tarde, adicionado ou não a medicamentos homeopáticos (5 g/animal/dia dos FATORES PRÓ(r), ESTRESSE(r) e C&MC(r)), e concentrado à vontade. Na fase pós-aleitamento (57 - 120 dias de idade), os animais receberam o mesmo concentrado, adicionado ou não com os mesmos medicamentos homeopáticos, e o consumo do concentrado foi limitado a, no máximo, 3 kg/animal/dia. A adição de medicamentos homeopáticos à dieta não afetou (p > 0,05) o desenvolvimento corporal, o CMS e o CA em bezerras leiteiras. Houve menor uso de antibiótico e carrapaticida nos animais que receberam os produtos homeopáticos. Concluiu-se que o uso de medicamentos homeopáticos não afetou o desenvolvimento corporal e reduziu o número de animais tratados com medicamentos alopáticos. The objective of this study was to evaluate the development of the body, the dry matter intake (DMI), feed conversion (FC) and some sanitary aspects of 12 female dairy calves which were fed with or without the use of homeopathic medicines, from birth to 120 days of age. Newborn crossbred heifers (3/4 Holstein x 1/4 Gyr) with live weight of 35.71 kg were distributed in a completely randomized design, with six replicates per treatment. During weaning (0 - 56 days old), the treatments consisted of milk, being 2 liters in the morning and 2 liters in the afternoon, with or without the addition of homeopathic medicines (5 g/animal/day FACTORS PRO(r), STRESS(r) and C&MC(r)) and concentrate ad libitum. In the postweaning period (57 - 120 days old), the animals received the same concentrate, added or not with the same homeopathic medicines limiting the intake in 3 kg/animal/day. The addition of homeopathic medicines to the diet did not affect (p > 0.05) body development, DMI or FC in dairy calves. A reduction in allopathic drugs to control diarrhea and tick infestation was observed in animals that received homeopathic products. It was concluded that the use of homeopathic medicines did not affect body development, and reduced the number of animals treated with allopathic medicines. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2012-12-01 The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplemental protein during the rainy season on body growth, ingestive behavior and reproductive performance of crossbred Gir x Holstein dairy heifers, with mean age of 21 ± 4.1 months and average initial body weight of 296.7 ± 57.3 kg, distributed in a completely randomized design with four treatments and six replicates per treatment. Heifers remained on Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu pasture, managed according to a rotational grazing system and, as treatment, it was supplemented with protein concentrate (34%, 43%, 56% and 66% BW) and level of supply of 0.30% body weight (BW). The animals were weighed and the mean weight of the lot was used for the calculation of adjustment of the amount of concentrate offered. Heifers that reached 330.0 kg of live weight were artificially inseminated and, 45 days after insemination, pregnancy diagnosis was performed for the calculation of pregnancy rate and age at conception. No significant difference of protein levels was observed on grazing, eating behavior, productive performance and age at conception of dairy heifers on pasture. The average daily weight gain of BW and age at conception were, on average, 0.907 kg/animal and 24.03 months, respectively.
