Abstract

Variants in seven genes (LRRK2, GBA1, PRKN, SNCA, PINK1, PARK7 and VPS35) have been formally adjudicated as causal contributors to Parkinsons disease; however, individuals with Parkinsons disease are often unaware of their genetic status since clinical testing is infrequently offered. As a result, genetic information is not incorporated into clinical care, and variant-targeted precision medicine trials struggle to enrol people with Parkinsons disease. Understanding the yield of genetic testing using an established gene panel in a large, geographically diverse North American population would help patients, clinicians, clinical researchers, laboratories and insurers better understand the importance of genetics in approaching Parkinsons disease. PD GENEration is an ongoing multi-centre, observational study (NCT04057794, NCT04994015) offering genetic testing with results disclosure and genetic counselling to those in the US (including Puerto Rico), Canada and the Dominican Republic, through local clinical sites or remotely through self-enrolment. DNA samples are analysed by next-generation sequencing including deletion/duplication analysis (Fulgent Genetics) with targeted testing of seven major Parkinsons disease-related genes. Variants classified as pathogenic/likely pathogenic/risk variants are disclosed to all tested participants by either neurologists or genetic counsellors. Demographic and clinical features are collected at baseline visits. Between September 2019 and June 2023, the study enrolled 10 510 participants across >85 centres, with 8301 having received results. Participants were: 59% male; 86% White, 2% Asian, 4% Black/African American, 9% Hispanic/Latino; mean age 67.4 ± 10.8 years. Abstract

In this paper we study Lie 2-algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic two, which have a triangulable Cartan subalgebra, and derive some general properties of centerless ones. These properties allow us to do an analysis on simple Lie 2-algebras of toral rank three and provide a necessary condition for simplicity. By means of this latter condition we also conclude that simple Lie 2-algebras with a triangulable Cartan subalgebra of toral rank three and of dimension less than or equal to 16 cannot exist., Comment: 14 pages

8. Exploring Ableism through Teacher Identity and Empowerment: Teaching about Disability through a Campus Common Reader

Abstract

This study was conducted to find how teacher candidates at a southwestern regional university understood ableism and empowerment based on their reading and interaction with the campus common reader. This work was important to help future teachers form healthy instructional practices that are inclusive of all students, regardless of ability in their future classrooms. The findings of this study showed evidence that this reading experience was transformative in helping teacher candidates form a teacher identity that was not only inclusive and welcoming of all, but also empowering.

Abstract

Este proyecto evaluó el uso de vidrio molido como agregado fino en la elaboración de ladrillos bocadillos, con el fin de reducir el impacto ambiental y aprovechar residuos. Se probaron tres dosificaciones de vidrio (15%, 25%, 35%) como reemplazo parcial de la arcilla, realizando ensayos de granulometría, límites de consistencia, humedad natural, absorción y resistencia a la compresión. Los resultados mostraron que la mezcla con 15% de vidrio es la más eficiente, ya que conserva las propiedades del ladrillo (forma, textura, color) y cumple con las normativas NTC 4017 y NTC 4205, sin afectar su calidad.

Abstract

Abstract The CMS detector, including its muon system, has been operating at the CERN LHC in increasingly challenging conditions for about 15 years. The muon detector was designed to provide excellent triggering and track reconstruction for muons produced in proton–proton collisons at an instantaneous luminosity ( $$\mathcal {L}$$ L ) of $$1 \times 10^{34}$$ 1 × 10 34 cm $$^{-2}$$ - 2 s $$^{-1}$$ - 1 . During the Run 2 data-taking period (2015–2018), the LHC achieved an instantaneous luminosity of twice its design value, resulting in larger background rates and making the efficient detection of muons more difficult. While some backgrounds result from natural radioactivity, cosmic rays, and interactions of the circulating protons with residual gas in the beam pipe, the dominant source of background hits in the muon system arises from proton–proton interactions themselves. Charged hadrons leaving the calorimeters produce energy deposits in the muon chambers. In addition, high-energy particles interacting in the hadron calorimeter and forward shielding elements generate thermal neutrons, which leak out of the calorimeter and shielding structures, filling the CMS cavern. We describe the method used to measure the background rates in the various muon subsystems. These rates, in conjunction with simulations, can be used to estimate the expected backgrounds in the High-Luminosity LHC. This machine will run for at least 10 years starting in 2029 reaching an instantaneous luminosity of $$\mathcal {L} = 5 \times \text {10}^\text {34}\,\text {cm}^\text {-2}\,\text {s}^\text {-1}$$ L = 5 × 10 34 cm -2 s -1 and increasing ultimately to $$\mathcal {L} = 7.5 \times \text {10}^\text {34}\,\text {cm}^\text {-2}\,\text {s}^\text {-1}$$ L = 7.5 × 10 34 cm -2 s -1 . These background estimates have been a key ingredient for the planning and design of the muon detector upgrade.

17. Empowering Youth for Sustainability in Universities: Service-Learning and the Willingness to Act

Abstract

Purpose: Service-learning (SL) shows potential to respond to the global policy agenda of education for sustainable development (ESD) by increasing pro-sustainability competences through direct involvement of students in projects that satisfy identified community needs. Nevertheless, there is a scarcity of studies that attempt to measure the impact of SL on students' sustainability competences, especially the action competence. This study aims to address this gap by examining the experiences of higher education students. Design/methodology/approach: A pre-post survey design based on the Self-Perceived Action Competence for Sustainability Questionnaire was conducted on an interdisciplinary group of 219 students of two courses (Sustainable Development and Ecology) in Medellin, Colombia, half of which (109) participated in SL projects. Findings: Sufficient empirical evidence was found to suggest that SL boosts the impact of academic courses regarding action competences in students (specially their willingness to act). Research limitations/implications: The statistical analysis shows some contradictions that should be addressed in further research. Practical implications: These results can encourage more educators and universities to implement strategies such as SL to move forward with ESD and thus help overcome the current socioecological crisis. Originality/value: This paper not only discusses the theoretical potential of SL but also contrasts theory with empirical observations of 13 SL projects assessed in terms of self-perceived action competence for sustainability.

Abstract

Introducing quasiparticle anisotropy in graphene via uniaxial strain has a profound effect on the polarization charge density induced by external impurities, both Coulomb and short-range. In particular, the charge distribution induced by a Coulomb impurity exhibits a power law tail modulated by a strain-dependent admixture of angular harmonics. The appearance of distributed charge is in sharp contrast to the response in pristine/isotropic graphene, where for subcritical impurities the polarization charge is fully localized at the impurity position. It is also interesting to note that our results are obtained strictly at zero chemical potential, and the behavior is distinct from the familiar Friedel oscillations observed at finite chemical potential. We find that over a wide range of strain, the $d$-wave symmetry is dominant. The presence of Dirac cone tilt, relevant to some 2D materials beyond graphene, can also substantially affect the induced charge distribution. Finally we consider impurities with short range potentials, and study the effect of strain on the charge response. Our results were obtained in the continuum via perturbation theory valid for weak (subcritical) potentials, and supported by numerical lattice simulations based on density functional theory., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures. Abstract

Claim reserving primarily relies on macro-level models, with the Chain-Ladder method being the most widely adopted. These methods were heuristically developed without minimal statistical foundations, relying on oversimplified data assumptions and neglecting policyholder heterogeneity, often resulting in conservative reserve predictions. Micro-level reserving, utilizing stochastic modeling with granular information, can improve predictions but tends to involve less attractive and complex models for practitioners. This paper aims to strike a practical balance between aggregate and individual models by introducing a methodology that enables the Chain-Ladder method to incorporate individual information. We achieve this by proposing a novel framework, formulating the claim reserving problem within a population sampling context. We introduce a reserve estimator in a frequency and severity distribution-free manner that utilizes inverse probability weights (IPW) driven by individual information, akin to propensity scores. We demonstrate that the Chain-Ladder method emerges as a particular case of such an IPW estimator, thereby inheriting a statistically sound foundation based on population sampling theory that enables the use of granular information, and other extensions.

Abstract

A primary goal of the upcoming Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is to measure the $\mathcal{O}(10)$ MeV neutrinos produced by a Galactic core-collapse supernova if one should occur during the lifetime of the experiment. The liquid-argon-based detectors planned for DUNE are expected to be uniquely sensitive to the $\nu_e$ component of the supernova flux, enabling a wide variety of physics and astrophysics measurements. A key requirement for a correct interpretation of these measurements is a good understanding of the energy-dependent total cross section $\sigma(E_\nu)$ for charged-current $\nu_e$ absorption on argon. In the context of a simulated extraction of supernova $\nu_e$ spectral parameters from a toy analysis, we investigate the impact of $\sigma(E_\nu)$ modeling uncertainties on DUNE's supernova neutrino physics sensitivity for the first time. We find that the currently large theoretical uncertainties on $\sigma(E_\nu)$ must be substantially reduced before the $\nu_e$ flux parameters can be extracted reliably: in the absence of external constraints, a measurement of the integrated neutrino luminosity with less than 10\% bias with DUNE requires $\sigma(E_\nu)$ to be known to about 5%. The neutrino spectral shape parameters can be known to better than 10% for a 20% uncertainty on the cross-section scale, although they will be sensitive to uncertainties on the shape of $\sigma(E_\nu)$. A direct measurement of low-energy $\nu_e$-argon scattering would be invaluable for improving the theoretical precision to the needed level., Comment: 25 pages, 21 figures

Abstract

Abstract Background Compared with conventional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes are less harmful in some studies. However, recent research may indicate the opposite. This study aimed to determine whether e-cigarette use is related to myocardial health in adults in the U.S. Methods This study used data from the 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a cross-sectional survey of adult US residents aged 18 years or older. We examined whether e-cigarette use was related to myocardial infarction byapplying a logistic regression model to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results The final analytical sample included 198,530 adults in the U.S. Logistic regression indicated that U.S. adults who reported being former and some days of e-cigarette use had 23% and 52% greater odds of ever having an MI, respectively, than did those who reported never using e-cigarettes (OR = 1.23, 95% CI 1.08–1.40, p = 0.001; OR = 1.52, 95% CI 1.10–2.09, p = 0.010). Conclusions The results suggest that former and someday users of e-cigarettes probably have increased odds of myocardial infarction in adults in the U.S. Further research is needed, including long-term follow-up studies on e-cigarettes, since it is still unknown whether they should be discouraged.

31. Analysis of food system drivers of deforestation highlights foreign direct investments and urbanization as threats to tropical forests

Abstract

Abstract Approximately 90% of global forest cover changes between 2000 and 2018 were attributable to agricultural expansion, making food production the leading direct driver of deforestation. While previous studies have focused on the interaction between human and environmental systems, limited research has explored deforestation from a food system perspective. This study analyzes the drivers of deforestation in 40 tropical and subtropical countries (2004–2021) through the lenses of consumption/demand, production/supply and trade/distribution using Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) models. Our models explained a substantial portion of deforestation variability globally (R2 = 0.74) and in Asia (R2 = 0.81) and Latin America (R2 = 0.73). The results indicate that trade- and demand-side dynamics, specifically foreign direct investments and urban population growth, play key roles in influencing deforestation trends at these scales, suggesting that food system-based interventions could be effective in mitigating deforestation. Conversely, the model for Africa showed weaker explanatory power (R2 = 0.30), suggesting that factors beyond the food system may play a larger role in this region. Our findings highlight the importance of targeting trade- and demand-side dynamics to reduce deforestation and how interventions within the food system could synergistically contribute to achieving sustainable development goals, such as climate action, life on land and zero hunger.

Abstract

Este artículo presenta un estudio cualitativo sobre los cambios en las dinámicas turísticas con base en la interacción del sector público, privado y comunidades de acogida durante la pandemia de COVID-19. Cuatro comunidades rurales ubicadas en el Área de Biosfera del Macizo del Cajas (ABMC), ubicadas en el sur de Ecuador fueron consideradas como casos de estudio para entender si la resiliencia fue un mecanismo usado para afrontar la crisis. Como método de recolección de datos se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas con residentes de las comunidades, autoridades y empresarios privados involucrados en los territorios de estudio. Los resultados indican que los valores simbólicos de las comunidades emergieron durante la crisis. Sin embargo, lo privado mantuvo su intención de mantenerse a flote y lo público intensificó las acciones que venían realizando antes de la pandemia. Se concluye que la COVID-19 destacó las reacciones fragmentadas hacia el turismo. Por lo tanto, la resiliencia comunitaria, centrada en los recursos y capacidades locales se adapta utilizando sus activos, mientras que la resiliencia del sector turístico aspira a regresar a la normalidad.

Abstract

Introduction: The use of integrase inhibitors within highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has demonstrated benefits for individuals living with HIV. However, most comparisons are based on effectiveness against viral replication, with limited information on their impact on the immune system. Objective: To identify immunological outcomes in studies comparing in- tegrase inhibitors (INSTIs) with other drugs used as third agents in HAART. Methods: Systematic review of studies reporting patients treated with INS- TIs versus non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) or pro-tease inhibitors (PIs) as the third drug in HAART. Immunological reconstitution outcomes were assessed, including CD4+ T lymphocyte count, CD4/ CD8 ratio, serum concentration of sCD14, D-dimer, and C-reactive protein, as well as the frequency and phenotype of T cells, functional capacity of T cells, and proviral DNA. Results: A total of 2804 studies were screened, 59 were evaluated in full text and four were included in the synthesis. A cohort study reported normalization of the CD4/CD8 ratio in patients initiating treatment with INSTIs compared to PIs or NNRTIs. However, this finding was not consistently replicated in other studies, and in one of them, this ratio was higher in those receiving efavirenz vs. dolutegravir. No evidence was found for other outcomes. Conclusions: The analyzed studies are inconclusive regarding differences in immunological reconstitution between INSTIs vs. PIs and NNRTIs.

Abstract

This article examines the relationships between extreme poverty, economic growth, and inequality, assesses if changes in inequality dampen the impact of income on extreme poverty, and determines the magnitude of the inequality growth trade-off index in Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and Honduras. A country-specific ARDL bound regression was conducted. The findings indicate the presence of direct and indirect dampening impacts of changes in inequality on income growth and extreme poverty reduction. The magnitude of the inequality growth trade-off- index indicates whether to prioritize growth and/or inequality reducing policies. This means that the higher the inequality, as in Honduras, the higher the economic or average income growth rate required to compensate for the increase in inequality to achieve a given level of extreme poverty reduction. Accordingly, there is no one-size-fits-all policy approach to tackling extreme poverty.

Este estudio se centra en analizar la cadena de valor en las pequeñas medianas empresas (PYMES) de la Comuna 12 en Dosquebradas explorando la implementación de la Teoría de Cadena de Valor Sostenible (TCVS), por lo que esta investigación vincula la Economía Circular y la TCV, proponiendo un marco teórico integral que integra aspectos ambientales, sociales y económicos. Se destaca la importancia de la Gestión Sostenible de la Cadena de Suministro en un contexto de alta demanda y recursos limitados. Se identifican desafíos como la falta de compromiso de la alta dirección y la escasez de incentivos financieros. La metodología incluye un diseño experimental y la aplicación de un cuestionario basado en la Responsabilidad Social Empresarial (RSE), ahora bien, los resultados muestran que las PYMES en la Comuna 12 tienen capacidades ambientales y sociales, pero se debe fortalecer la gobernanza, entonces los clientes del Barrio Guadalupe demuestran características de consumidores conscientes. Además, el modelo de cadena de valor sostenible destaca la importancia de la planeación y la integración de políticas con una visión de sostenibilidad.

Abstract

The rapid development of general-purpose computing on graphics processing units (GPGPU) is allowing the implementation of highly-parallelized Monte Carlo simulation chains for particle physics experiments. This technique is particularly suitable for the simulation of a pixelated charge readout for time projection chambers, given the large number of channels that this technology employs. Here we present the first implementation of a full microphysical simulator of a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) equipped with light readout and pixelated charge readout, developed for the DUNE Near Detector. The software is implemented with an end-to-end set of GPU-optimized algorithms. The algorithms have been written in Python and translated into CUDA kernels using Numba, a just-in-time compiler for a subset of Python and NumPy instructions. The GPU implementation achieves a speed up of four orders of magnitude compared with the equivalent CPU version. The simulation of the current induced on $10^3$ pixels takes around 1 ms on the GPU, compared with approximately 10 s on the CPU. La primera, más extensa, se ocupa del estudio narrativo del texto. El estudio ofrece una visión amplia de la narrativa, una lectura sincrónica del texto tal como ha llegado hasta nosotros, una lectura que sugiere algunas ideas que pueden pasar desapercibidas para el lector que considera el texto basándose en métodos diacrónicos legítimos. La segunda sección complementa el estudio narrativo con una aproximación teológica de la historia, y la última sección es una lectura hermenéutica que muestra cómo grupos de reclusos relacionan el texto con su situación personal.

Background: Guidelines for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) propose total IgE and eosinophils as important biomarkers to identify type-2 inflammation. Despite the fact that specific IgE (sIgE) have been identified as a clinical predictor in some type-2 diseases for different clinical outcomes, its role in CRS has yet to be explored in detail. Objetive: To describe systemic and local sIgE in CRS and explore its possible association with clinical outcomes using nasal challenge tests (NCT). Methods: In CRS patients, we measure total IgE, serum sIgE (SsIgE) and nasosinusal sIgE (NsIgE) against 9 allergenic sources; Der p, Der f, Blo t, Can f, Fel d, Per a, grasses, Staphylococcus enterotoxin A, and B. NCT was done using the allergen with the higher sIgE prevalence (Der p). Results: A total of 174 patients were included. Prevalence of SsIgE was 52.8% and NsIgE 46.5%; Der p was the principal allergen for SsIgE and NsIgE. The presence of nasal polyps, asthma comorbidity, NSAID hypersensitivity, and hyposmia, were significantly associated with the presence of SsIgE and NsIgE but not with total IgE. NCT-Der p was performed in 73 CRS patients, being positive in 33 (45.2%). SsIgE have the best diagnostic accuracy (79.4%) to predict NCT results (NsIgE 67.5% total IgE 52%). Conclusion: Specific IgE is a better biomarker in CRS than total IgE. Patients with clinically relevant SsIgE have a pheno-endotype associated with different clinical outcomes. Considering the clinical relevance of SsIgE demonstrated by NCT, interventions like allergen immunotherapy in CRS must be study.

Abstract

The study aims to explain the omnichannel characteristics and behaviors of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the food sector in Antioquia, Colombia. It evaluates the conditions necessary to achieve an omnichannel classification based on three dimensions: marketing models, multichannel options, and supply chain with digital technologies. An explanatory methodology using empirical data from surveys of 140 MSMEs was applied, and cluster analysis was used to group the companies. The results show relatively low overall omnichannel behavior, with medium enterprises outperforming small and micro enterprises. Enhanced digital technologies and integrated platforms can significantly improve omnichannel conditions, leading to better profitability and customer retention. The findings emphasize the importance of digital integration and the need for further research into the technological and methodological aspects of omnichannel implementation.

40. Inhibition of host 5-lipoxygenase reduces overexuberant inflammatory responses and mortality associated with Cryptococcus meningoencephalitis

Abstract

ABSTRACT Cryptococcosis, caused by fungi of the genus Cryptococcus, manifests in a broad range of clinical presentations, including severe pneumonia and disease of the central nervous system (CNS) and other tissues (bone and skin). Immune deficiency or development of overexuberant inflammatory responses can result in increased susceptibility or host damage, respectively, during fungal encounters. Leukotrienes help regulate inflammatory responses against fungal infections. Nevertheless, studies showed that Cryptococcus exploits host 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO), an enzyme central to the metabolism of arachidonic acid into leukotrienes, to facilitate transmigration across the brain–blood barrier. To investigate the impact of host 5-LO on the development of protective host immune responses and mortality during cryptococcosis, wild-type (C57BL/6) and 5-lipoxygenase-deficient (5-LO−/−) mice were given experimental pulmonary and systemic Cryptococcus sp., infections. Our results showed that 5-LO−/− mice exhibited reduced pathology and better disease outcomes (i.e., no mortality or signs associated with cryptococcal meningoencephalitis) following pulmonary infection with C. deneoformans, despite having detectable yeast in the brain tissues. In contrast, C57BL/6 mice exhibited classical signs associated with cryptococcal meningoencephalitis. Additionally, brain tissues of 5-LO−/− mice exhibited lower levels of cytokines (CCL2 and CCL3) clinically associated with Cryptococcus-related immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (C-IRIS). In a systemic mouse model of cryptococcosis, 5-LO−/− mice and those treated with a Federal Drug Administration (FDA)-approved 5-LO synthesis inhibitor, zileuton, displayed significantly reduced mortality compared to C57BL/6 infected mice. These results suggest that therapeutics designed to inhibit host 5-LO signaling could reduce disease pathology and mortality associated with cryptococcal meningoencephalitis.IMPORTANCECryptococcosis is a mycosis with worldwide distribution and has a broad range of clinical manifestations, including diseases of the CNS. Globally, there is an estimated 179,000 cases of cryptococcal meningitis, resulting in approximately 112,000 fatalities per annum and 19% of AIDS-related deaths. Understanding how host immune responses are modulated during cryptococcosis is central to mitigating the morbidity and mortality associated with cryptococcosis. Leukotrienes (LTs) have been shown to modulate inflammatory responses during infection. In this study, we show that mice deficient in 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO), an enzyme central to the metabolism of arachidonic acid into leukotrienes, exhibit reduced pathology, disease, and neurological signs associated with cryptococcal meningitis. Additionally, mice given an experimental cryptococcal infection and subsequently treated with an FDA-approved 5-LO synthesis inhibitor exhibited significantly reduced mortality rates. These results suggest that therapeutics designed to inhibit host 5-LO activity could significantly reduce pathology and mortality rates associated with cryptococcal meningitis.

Abstract

ObjectiveDespite advances in the treatment of psychiatric diseases, currently available therapies do not provide sufficient and durable relief for as many as 30-40% of patients. Neuromodulation, including deep brain stimulation (DBS), has emerged as a potential therapy for persistent disabling disease, however it has not yet gained widespread adoption. In 2016, the American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (ASSFN) convened a meeting with leaders in the field to discuss a roadmap for the path forward. A follow-up meeting in 2022 aimed to review the current state of the field and to identify critical barriers and milestones for progress.DesignThe ASSFN convened a meeting on June 3, 2022 in Atlanta, Georgia and included leaders from the fields of neurology, neurosurgery, and psychiatry along with colleagues from industry, government, ethics, and law. The goal was to review the current state of the field, assess for advances or setbacks in the interim six years, and suggest a future path forward. The participants focused on five areas of interest: interdisciplinary engagement, regulatory pathways and trial design, disease biomarkers, ethics of psychiatric surgery, and resource allocation/prioritization. The proceedings are summarized here.ConclusionThe field of surgical psychiatry has made significant progress since our last expert meeting. Although weakness and threats to the development of novel surgical therapies exist, the identified strengths and opportunities promise to move the field through methodically rigorous and biologically-based approaches. The experts agree that ethics, law, patient engagement, and multidisciplinary teams will be critical to any potential growth in this area.

Abstract

Bosonic atoms deposited on atomically thin substrates represent a playground for exotic quantum many-body physics due to the highly-tunable, atomic-scale nature of the interaction potentials. The ability to engineer strong interparticle interactions can lead to the emergence of complex collective atomic states of matter, not possible in the context of dilute atomic gases confined in optical lattices. While it is known that the first layer of adsorbed helium on graphene is permanently locked into a solid phase, we show by a combination of quantum Monte Carlo and mean-field techniques, that simple isotropic graphene lattice expansion effectively unlocks a large variety of two-dimensional ordered commensurate, incommensurate, cluster atomic solid, and superfluid states for adsorbed atoms. It is especially significant that an atomically thin superfluid phase of matter emerges under experimentally feasible strain values, with potentially supersolid phases in close proximity on the phase diagram., Comment: Main text: 12 pages and 5 figures. Abstract

Experience rating in insurance uses a Bayesian credibility model to upgrade the current premiums of a contract by taking into account policyholders' attributes and their claim history. Most data-driven models used for this task are mathematically intractable, and premiums must be obtained through numerical methods such as simulation via MCMC. However, these methods can be computationally expensive and even prohibitive for large portfolios when applied at the policyholder level. Additionally, these computations become ``black-box" procedures as there is no analytical expression showing how the claim history of policyholders is used to upgrade their premiums. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a surrogate modeling approach to inexpensively derive an analytical expression for computing the Bayesian premiums for any given model, approximately. As a part of the methodology, the paper introduces a \emph{likelihood-based summary statistic} of the policyholder's claim history that serves as the main input of the surrogate model and that is sufficient for certain families of distribution, including the exponential dispersion family. As a result, the computational burden of experience rating for large portfolios is reduced through the direct evaluation of such analytical expression, which can provide a transparent and interpretable way of computing Bayesian premiums.

Abstract

Measurements of electrons from $\nu_e$ interactions are crucial for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) neutrino oscillation program, as well as searches for physics beyond the standard model, supernova neutrino detection, and solar neutrino measurements. This article describes the selection and reconstruction of low-energy (Michel) electrons in the ProtoDUNE-SP detector. ProtoDUNE-SP is one of the prototypes for the DUNE far detector, built and operated at CERN as a charged particle test beam experiment. A sample of low-energy electrons produced by the decay of cosmic muons is selected with a purity of 95%. This sample is used to calibrate the low-energy electron energy scale with two techniques. An electron energy calibration based on a cosmic ray muon sample uses calibration constants derived from measured and simulated cosmic ray muon events. Another calibration technique makes use of the theoretically well-understood Michel electron energy spectrum to convert reconstructed charge to electron energy. In addition, the effects of detector response to low-energy electron energy scale and its resolution including readout electronics threshold effects are quantified. Finally, the relation between the theoretical and reconstructed low-energy electron energy spectrum is derived and the energy resolution is characterized. The low-energy electron selection presented here accounts for about 75% of the total electron deposited energy. After the addition of lost energy using a Monte Carlo simulation, the energy resolution improves from about 40% to 25% at 50~MeV. Abstract

Biological membranes are fundamental components of living organisms that play an undeniable role in their survival. Molecular dynamics (MD) serves as an essential computational tool for studying biomembranes on molecular and atomistic scales. The status quo of MD simulations of biomembranes studies a nanometer-sized membrane patch periodically extended under periodic boundary conditions (PBC). In nature, membranes are usually composed of different lipids in their two layers (referred to as leaflets). This compositional asymmetry imposes a fixed ratio of lipid numbers between the two leaflets in a periodically constrained membrane, which needs to be set appropriately. The widely adopted methods of defining leaflet lipid ratio suffer from the lack of control over the mechanical tension of each leaflet, which could significantly influence research findings. In this study, we investigate the role of membrane-building protocol and the resulting initial stress state on the interaction between small molecules and asymmetric membranes. We model the outer membrane of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria using two different building protocols and probe their interactions with the Pseudomonas Quinolone Signal (PQS). Our results show that differential stress could shift the position of free energy minimum for the PQS molecule between the two leaflets of the asymmetric membrane. Abstract

El presente artículo resultado de investigación se enfoca en identificar y describir el empoderamiento de la mujer comunicadora social – periodista en Tunja, Colombia, con base en su participación laboral en los medios de comunicación, comparando los cargos en los que dichas mujeres se han desempeñado desde el año 2015 hasta el 2019, para así presentar la construcción de narrativas donde se pueda reconocer el desarrollo de su labor. La investigación se encuentra enmarcada bajo el paradigma histórico – hermenéutico, con un enfoque cualitativo de tipo descriptivo. La población con la que se realizó la investiga-ción fueron 12 mujeres con formación empírica y profesional en la Comunicación Social; el proceso para la recolección de información se dividió en ocho fases y los datos recolecta-dos se tomaron a partir de entrevistas semiestructuradas y encuestas. Los resultados están enfocados en el reconocimiento de la profesional, la reflexión y la equidad de género en la capital boyacense. Las conclusiones están enfocadas en resaltar dos aspectos fundamentales: en primer lugar, la ausencia en la implementación de cátedras y espacios de formación rela-cionados con temáticas de visión de género, donde se reconozca el papel de la mujer; y, en segundo lugar, se habiliten nuevas estrategias que brinden las oportunidades de liderazgo y toma de decisiones que permitan contribuir al empoderamiento de la profesional, no solo en la región, sino en el ámbito nacional e internacional.
