Search

Eclipsing binary stars allow derivation of accurate and precise masses and radii. When they reside in star clusters, properties of even higher precision, along with additional information, can be extracted. Asteroseismology of solar-like oscillations offers similar possibilities for single stars. We improve the previously established properties of the Hyades eclipsing binary HD27130 and re-assess the asteroseismic properties of the giant star $\epsilon$ Tau. The physical properties of these members of the Hyades are then used to constrain the helium content and age of the cluster. New multi-colour light curves were combined with multi-epoch radial velocities to yield masses and radii of HD27130. $T_{\rm eff}$ was derived from spectroscopy and photometry, and verified using the Gaia parallax. We estimate the cluster age from re-evaluated asteroseismic properties of $\epsilon$ Tau while using HD27130 to constrain the helium content. The masses and radii, and $T_{\rm eff}$ of HD 27130 were found to be $M=1.0245\pm0.0024 M_{\odot}$, $R=0.9226\pm0.015 R_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm eff}=5650\pm50$ K for the primary, and $M=0.7426\pm0.0016 M_{\odot}$, $R=0.7388\pm0.026 R_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm eff}=4300\pm100$ K for the secondary component. Our re-evaluation of $\epsilon$ Tau suggests that the previous literature estimates are trustworthy, and that the Hipparcos parallax is more reliable than the Gaia DR2 parallax. The helium content of HD27130 and thus of the Hyades is found to be $Y=0.27$ but with significant model dependence. Correlations with the adopted metallicity results in a robust helium enrichment law with $\frac{\Delta Y}{\Delta Z}$ close to 1.2. We estimate the age of the Hyades to be 0.9 $\pm$ 0.1 (stat) $\pm$ 0.1 (sys) Gyr in slight tension with recent age estimates based on the cluster white dwarfs. We present a detailed near-infrared chemical abundance analysis of 10 red giant members of the Galactic open cluster NGC 752. High-resolution (R$\simeq$45000) near-infrared spectral data were gathered with the Immersion Grating Infrared Spectrograph (IGRINS), providing simultaneous coverage of the complete H and K bands. We derived the abundances of H-burning (C, N, O), $\alpha$ (Mg, Si, S, Ca), light odd-Z (Na, Al, P, K), Fe-group (Sc, Ti, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni) and neutron-capture (Ce, Nd, Yb) elements. We report the abundances of S, P, K, Ce, and Yb in NGC 752 for the first time. Our analysis yields solar metallicity and solar abundance ratios for almost all of the elements heavier than the CNO group in NGC 752. O and N abundances were measured from a number of OH and CN features in the $H$ band, and C abundances were determined mainly from CO molecular lines in the K band. High excitation \ion{C}{i} lines present in both near-infrared and optical spectra were also included in the C abundance determinations. Carbon isotopic ratios were derived from the R-branch band heads of first overtone (2-0) and (3$-$1) $^{12}$CO and (2-0) $^{13}$CO lines near 23440 \AA and (3-1) $^{13}$CO lines at about 23730 \AA. The CNO abundances and $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratios are all consistent with our giants having completed "first dredge-up" envelope mixing of CN-cyle products. We independently assessed NGC 752 stellar membership from Gaia astrometry, leading to a new color-magnitude diagram for this cluster. Applications of Victoria isochrones and MESA models to these data yield an updated NGC 752 cluster age (1.52 Gyr) and evolutionary stage indications for the program stars. The photometric evidence and spectroscopic light element abundances all suggest that the most, perhaps all of the program stars are members of the helium-burning red clump in this cluster., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

We present near-infrared spectroscopic analysis of 12 red giant members of the Galactic open cluster NGC 6940. High-resolution (R$\simeq$45000) and high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N > 100) near-infrared H and K band spectra were gathered with the Immersion Grating Infrared Spectrograph (IGRINS) on the 2.7m Smith Telescope at McDonald Observatory. We obtained abundances of H-burning (C, N, O), ${\alpha}$ (Mg, Si, S, Ca), light odd-Z (Na, Al, P, K), Fe-group (Sc, Ti, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni) and neutron-capture (Ce, Nd, Yb) elements. We report the abundances of S, P, K, Ce, and Yb in NGC 6940 for the first time. Many OH and CN features in the H band were used to obtain O and N abundances. C abundances were measured from four different features: CO molecular lines in the K band, high excitation C I lines present in both near-infrared and optical, CH and $C_2$ bands in the optical region. We have also determined $^{12}C/^{13}C$ ratios from the R-branch band heads of first overtone (2-0) and (3-1) $^{12}CO$ (2-0) $^{13}CO$ lines near 23440 $\overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}$ and (3-1) $^{13}CO$ lines at about 23730 $\overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}$. We have also investigated the HF feature at 23358.3 $\overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}$, finding solar fluorine abundances without ruling out a slight enhancement. For some elements (such as the ${\alpha}$ group), IGRINS data yield more internally self-consistent abundances. We also revisited the CMD of NGC 6940 by determining the most probable cluster members using Gaia DR2. Finally, we applied Victoria isochrones and MESA models in order to refine our estimates of the evolutionary stages of our targets., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

We determine the properties of the binary star V106 in the old open cluster NGC6791. We identify the system to be a blue straggler cluster member by using a combination of ground-based and Kepler photometry and multi-epoch spectroscopy. The properties of the primary component are found to be $M_{\rm p}\sim1.67 \rm M_{\odot}$, more massive than the cluster turn-off, with $R_{\rm p}\sim1.91 \rm R_{\odot}$ and $T_{\rm eff}=7110\pm100$ K. The secondary component is highly oversized and overluminous for its low mass with $M_{\rm s}\sim0.182 \rm M_{\odot}$, $R_{\rm s}\sim0.864 \rm R_{\odot}$ and $T_{\rm eff}=6875\pm200$ K. We identify this secondary star as a bloated (proto) extremely low-mass helium white dwarf. These properties of V106 suggest that it represents a typical Algol-paradox system and that it evolved through a mass-transfer phase which provides insight into its past evolution. We present a detailed binary stellar evolution model for the formation of V106 using the MESA code and find that the mass-transfer phase only ceased about 40 Myr ago. Due to the short orbital period (P=1.4463 d) another mass-transfer phase is unavoidable once the current primary star evolves towards the red giant phase. We argue that V106 will evolve through a common-envelope phase within the next 100 Myr and merge to become a single over-massive giant. The high mass will make it appear young for its true age, which is revealed by the cluster properties. Using the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we have obtained a direct trigonometric parallax for the nearest metal-poor globular cluster, NGC 6397. Although trigonometric parallaxes have been previously measured for many nearby open clusters, this is the first parallax for an ancient metal-poor population -- one that is used as a fundamental template in many stellar population studies. This high-precision measurement was enabled by the HST/WFC3 spatial-scanning mode, providing hundreds of astrometric measurements for dozens of stars in the cluster and also for Galactic field stars along the same sightline. We find a parallax of 0.418 +/- 0.013 +/- 0.018 mas (statistical, systematic), corresponding to a true distance modulus of 11.89 +/- 0.07 +/- 0.09 mag (2.39 +/- 0.07 +/- 0.10 kpc). The V luminosity at the stellar main sequence turnoff implies an absolute cluster age of 13.4 +/- 0.7 +/- 1.2 Gyr., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. Our aim is to derive a self-consistent age, distance and composition for the globular cluster $47\,$Tucanae ($47\,$Tuc; NGC104). First, we reevaluate the reddening towards the cluster resulting in a nominal $E(B-V)=0.03\pm0.01$ as the best estimate. The $T_{\rm eff}$ of the components of the eclipsing binary member V69 is found to be $5900\pm72$ K from both photometric and spectroscopic evidence. This yields a true distance modulus $(m-M)_0=13.21\pm0.06$(random)$ \pm0.03 $(systematic) to $47\,$Tuc when combined with existing measurements of V69 radii and luminosity ratio. We then present a new completely self-consistent isochrone fitting method to ground based and $\textit{HST}$ cluster colour-magnitude diagrams and the eclipsing binary member V69. The analysis suggests that the composition of V69, and by extension one of the populations of $47\,$Tuc, is given by [Fe/H]$\sim-0.70$, [O/Fe]$\sim+0.60$, and $Y\sim0.250$ on the solar abundance scale of Asplund, Grevesse & Sauval. However, this depends on the accuracy of the model $T_{\rm eff}$ scale which is 50-75 K cooler than our best estimate but within measurement uncertainties. Our best estimate of the age of $47\,$Tuc is 11.8 Gyr, with firm ($3 \sigma$) lower and upper limits of 10.4 and 13.4 Gyr, respectively, in satisfactory agreement with the age derived from the white dwarf cooling sequence if our determination of the distance modulus is adopted., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present constraints on the stellar initial mass function (IMF) in two ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) galaxies, Hercules and Leo IV, based on deep HST/ACS imaging. The Hercules and Leo IV galaxies are extremely low luminosity (M_V = -6.2, -5.5), metal-poor (<[Fe/H]>= -2.4, -2.5) systems that have old stellar populations (> 11 Gyr). Because they have long relaxation times, we can directly measure the low-mass stellar IMF by counting stars below the main-sequence turnoff without correcting for dynamical evolution. Over the stellar mass range probed by our data, 0.52 - 0.77 Msun, the IMF is best fit by a power-law slope of alpha = 1.2^{+0.4}_{-0.5} for Hercules and alpha = 1.3 +/- 0.8 for Leo IV. For Hercules, the IMF slope is more shallow than a Salpeter IMF (alpha=2.35) at the 5.8-sigma level, and a Kroupa IMF (alpha=2.3 above 0.5 Msun) at 5.4-sigma level. We simultaneously fit for the binary fraction, finding f_binary = 0.47^{+0.16}_{-0.14} for Hercules, and 0.47^{+0.37}_{-0.17} for Leo IV. The UFD binary fractions are consistent with that inferred for Milky Way stars in the same mass range, despite very different metallicities. In contrast, the IMF slopes in the UFDs are shallower than other galactic environments. In the mass range 0.5 - 0.8 Msun, we see a trend across the handful of galaxies with directly measured IMFs such that the power-law slopes become shallower (more bottom-light) with decreasing galactic velocity dispersion and metallicity. This trend is qualitatively consistent with results in elliptical galaxies inferred via indirect methods and is direct evidence for IMF variations with galactic environment., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted to ApJ

Models of stellar structure and evolution can be constrained by measuring accurate parameters of detached eclipsing binaries in open clusters. Multiple binary stars provide the means to determine helium abundances in these old stellar systems, and in turn, to improve estimates of their age. In the first paper of this series, we demonstrated how measurements of multiple eclipsing binaries in the old open cluster NGC6791 sets tighter constraints on the properties of stellar models than has previously been possible, thereby potentially improving both the accuracy and precision of the cluster age. Here we add additional constraints and perform an extensive model comparison to determine the best estimates of the cluster age and helium content, employing as many observational constraints as possible. We improve our photometry and correct empirically for differential reddening effects. We then perform an extensive comparison of the CMDs and eclipsing binary measurements to Victoria and DSEP isochrones to estimate cluster parameters. We also reanalyse a spectrum of the star 2-17 to improve [Fe/H] constraints. We find a best estimate of the age of ~8.3 Gyr while demonstrating that remaining age uncertainty is dominated by uncertainties in the CNO abundances. The helium mass fraction is well constrained at Y = 0.30 \pm 0.01 resulting in dY/dZ ~ 1.4 assuming that such a relation exists. During the analysis we firmly identify blue straggler stars, including the star 2-17, and find indications for the presence of their evolved counterparts. Our analysis supports the RGB mass-loss found from asteroseismology and we determine precisely the absolute mass of stars on the lower RGB, 1.15\pm0.02Msun. Earlier measurements of the masses and radii of the detached eclipsing binary V20 in the open cluster NGC 6791 were accurate enough to demonstrate that there are significant differences between current stellar models. Here we improve on those results and add measurements of two additional detached eclipsing binaries, the cluster members V18 and V80. The enlarged sample sets much tighter constraints on the properties of stellar models than has hitherto been possible, thereby improving both the accuracy and precision of the cluster age. We employed (i) high-resolution UVES spectroscopy of V18, V20 and V80 to determine their spectroscopic effective temperatures, [Fe/H] values, and spectroscopic orbital elements, and (ii) time-series photometry from the Nordic Optical Telescope to obtain the photometric elements. The masses and radii of the V18 and V20 components are found to high accuracy, with errors on the masses in the range 0.27-0.36% and errors on the radii in the range 0.61-0.92%. V80 is found to be magnetically active, and more observations are needed to determine its parameters accurately. The metallicity of NGC 6791 is measured from disentangled spectra of the binaries and a few single stars to be [Fe/H]= +0.29 \pm 0.03 (random) \pm 0.07 (systematic). The cluster reddening and apparent distance modulus are found to be E(B - V) = 0.160 \pm 0.025 and (m - M)V = 13.51 \pm 0.06 . A first model comparison shows that we can constrain the helium content of the NGC 6791 stars, and thus reach a more accurate age than previously possible. We present a new method to estimate the absolute ages of stellar systems. This method is based on the difference in magnitude between the main sequence turn-off (MSTO) and a well defined knee located along the lower main sequence (MSK). This feature is caused by the collisionally induced absorption of molecular hydrogen and it can be easily identified in near-infrared (NIR) and in optical-NIR color-magnitude diagrams of stellar systems. We took advantage of deep and accurate NIR images collected with the Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics Demonstrator temporarily available on the Very Large Telescope and of optical images collected with the Advanced Camera for Surveys Wide Field Camera on the Hubble Space Telescope and with ground-based telescopes to estimate the absolute age of the globular NGC3201 using both the MSTO and the Delta(MSTO-MSK). We have adopted a new set of cluster isochrones and we found that the absolute ages based on the two methods agree to within one sigma. However, the errors of the ages based on the Delta(MSTO-MSK) method are potentially more than a factor of two smaller, since they are not affected by uncertainties in cluster distance or reddening.Current isochrones appear to predict slightly bluer (~0.05mag) NIR and optical-NIR colors than observed for magnitudes fainter than the MSK., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication on ApJL

(Abriged) A new grid of theoretical color indices for the Stromgren uvby photometric system has been derived from MARCS model atmospheres and SSG synthetic spectra for cool dwarf and giant stars. At warmer temperatures this grid has been supplemented with the synthetic uvby colors from recent Kurucz atmospheric models without overshooting. Our transformations appear to reproduce the observed colors of extremely metal-poor turnoff and giant stars (i.e., [Fe/H]<-2). Due to a number of assumptions made in the synthetic color calculations, however, our color-temperature relations for cool stars fail to provide a suitable match to the uvby photometry of both cluster and field stars having [Fe/H]>-2. To overcome this problem, the theoretical indices at intermediate and high metallicities have been corrected using a set of color calibrations based on field stars having accurate IRFM temperature estimates and spectroscopic [Fe/H] values. Encouragingly, isochrones that employ the transformations derived in this study are able to reproduce the observed CMDs (involving u-v, v-b, and b-y colors) for a number of open and globular clusters (including M92, M67, the Hyades, and 47Tuc) rather well. Moreover, our interpretations of such data are very similar, if not identical, with those given by VandenBerg & Clem (2003, AJ, 126, 778) from a consideration of BV(RI)c observations for the same clusters. In the present investigation, we have also analyzed the observed Stromgren photometry for the classic Population II subdwarfs, compared our "final" (b-y)-Teff relationship with those derived empirically in a number of recent studies, and examined in some detail the dependence of the m1 index on [Fe/H]., Comment: 70 pages, 26 figures. We review the history of the discovery of field subgiant stars and their importance in the age dating of the Galactic disk. We use the cataloged data from the Hipparcos satellite in this latter capacity. Based on Hipparcos parallaxes accurate to 10% or better, the absolute magnitude of the lower envelope of the nearly horizontal subgiant sequence for field stars in the H-R diagram for B-V colors between 0.85 and 1.05 is measured to be M_V = 4.03 +/- 0.06. The age of the field stars in the solar neighborhood is found to be 7.9 +/- 0.7 Gyr by fitting the theoretical isochrones for [Fe/H] = +0.37 to the lower envelope of the Hipparcos subgiants. The same grid of isochrones yields ages, in turn, of 4.0 +/- 0.2 Gyr, 6.2 +/- 0.5 Gyr, and 7.5 to 10 Gyr for the old Galactic clusters M67, NGC188, and NGC6791. The ages of both the Galactic disk in the solar neighborhood and of NGC6791 are, nevertheless, likely between 3 and 5 Gyr younger than the oldest halo globular clusters, which have ages of 13.5 Gyr. The most significant results are (1) the supermetallicity of the oldest local disk stars, and (2) the large age difference between the most metal-poor component of the halo and the thick and thin disk in the solar neighborhood. These facts are undoubtedly related and pose again the problem of the proper scenario for the timing of events in the formation of the halo and the Galactic disk in the solar neighborhood. A new extensive grid of synthetic Str{\"o}mgren colors and bolometric corrections is presented for F-M type dwarf and giant stars having 3000K $\leq$ T$_{\rm{eff}}$ $\leq$ 8000K, 0.0 $\leq$ log $g$ $\leq$ 5.0, and -3.0 $\leq$ [Fe/H] $\leq$ 0.5. These purely theoretical colors are placed on the observational system using color calibrations derived from $uvby$ photometry of nearby field stars having $Hipparcos$ parallaxes and effective temperatures determined by the infrared flux method. Modern isochrones transformed to the observed plane using the resultant color-temperature relations are able to reproduce the $uvby$ color-magnitude diagrams of several open and globular clusters (notably M 67, M 92, and 47 Tuc) quite satisfactorily., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to be published in "Observed HR diagrams and stellar evolution: the interplay between observational constraints and theory" (Coimbra, June, 2001) ASP Conf. We report results from a large Hubble Space Telescope project to observe a significant (~34,000) ensemble of main sequence stars in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae with a goal of defining the frequency of inner-orbit, gas-giant planets. Simulations based on the characteristics of the 8.3 days of time-series data in the F555W and F814W WFPC2 filters show that ~17 planets should be detected by photometric transit signals if the frequency of hot Jupiters found in the solar neighborhood is assumed to hold for 47 Tuc. The experiment provided high-quality data sufficient to detect planets. A full analysis of these WFPC2 data reveals ~75 variables, but NO light curves resulted for which a convincing interpretation as a planet could be made. The planet frequency in 47 Tuc is at least an order of magnitude below that for the solar neighborhood. The cause of the absence of close-in planets in 47 Tuc is not yet known; presumably the low metallicity and/or crowding of 47 Tuc interfered with planet formation, with orbital evolution to close-in positions, or with planet survival., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

We illustrate the application of high precision Stromgren uvby photometry to open and globular clusters (GCs). It is shown how such data can be used to determine cluster ages, independent of distance and only weakly dependent on reddening. We also illustrate in detail how c1 index variations point to significant star-to-star abundance variations of C and N (through variations in the strength of the 3360AA NH band) on the red giant branches (RGBs) of all metal-poor GCs observed to date as well as on the main sequences of M71 (NGC 6838) and 47 Tuc (NGC 104)., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, to appear in the proceedings of: "The Galactic Halo: from Globular Clusters to Field Stars"; 35'th Liege Int. The WFPC2 camera on HST has been used to obtain deep main sequence photometry of the low-metallicity ([Fe/H]=-2.14), outer-halo globular cluster NGC 2419. A differential fit of the NGC 2419 CMD to that of the similarly metal-poor \ standard cluster M92 shows that they have virtually identical principal sequences and thus the same age to well within 1 Gyr. Since other low-metallicity clusters throughout the Milky Way halo have this same age to within the 1-Gyr precision of the differential age technique, we conclude that the earliest star (or globular cluster) formation began at essentially the same time everywhere in the Galactic halo throughout a region now almost 200 kpc in diameter. Thus for the metal-poorest clusters in the halo there is no detectable age gradient with Galactocentric distance. To estimate the absolute age of NGC 2419 and M92, we fit newly computed isochrones transformed through model-atmosphere calculations to the (M_V,V-I) plane, with assumed distance scales that represent the range currently debated in the literature. Unconstrained isochrone fits give M_V(RR) = 0.55 \pm 0.06 and a resulting age of 14 to 15 Gyr. Incorporating the full effects of helium diffusion would further reduce this estimate by about 1 Gyr. A distance scale as bright as M_V(RR) = 0.15 for [Fe/H] = -2, as has recently been reported, would leave several serious problems which have no obvious solution in the context of current stellar models., Comment: 32 pages, aastex, 9 postscript figures; accepted for publication in AJ, September 1997. We review observational evidence bearing on the formation of a prototypical large spiral galaxy, the Milky Way. New ground- and space-based studies of globular star clusters and dwarf spheroidal galaxies provide a wealth of information to constrain theories of galaxy formation. It appears likely that the Milky Way formed by a combination of rapid, dissipative collapse and mergers, but the relative contributions of these two mechanisms remain controversial. New evidence, however, indicates that initial star and star cluster formation occurred simultaneously over a volume that presently extends to twice the distance of the Magellanic Clouds., Comment: 8 pages. We present photometry for stars in the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy that is unprecedented in depth, accuracy and spatial coverage. Our data demonstrate that Carina has had a surprisingly complex evolution dominated by episodic bursts of star formation. Comparing the color-magnitude diagram with new theoretical isochrones, we determine that the ages of the ``bursts'' are approximately 2, 3--6, and 11--13 Gyr. Note that the ``bursts'' and quiescent phases lasted for <~1 Gyr, which are much longer than the ~0.1 Gyr dynamical timescale in the galaxy. Each main-sequence turnoff in Carina connects to a single red giant branch, which tells us that, regardless of age, Carina stars are metal-poor with [Fe/H]~= -1.86 and a spread in metal abundance of only 0.2 dex.
