1. beeFormer: Bridging the Gap Between Semantic and Interaction Similarity in Recommender Systems

Abstract

Recommender systems often use text-side information to improve their predictions, especially in cold-start or zero-shot recommendation scenarios, where traditional collaborative filtering approaches cannot be used. Many approaches to text-mining side information for recommender systems have been proposed over recent years, with sentence Transformers being the most prominent one. However, these models are trained to predict semantic similarity without utilizing interaction data with hidden patterns specific to recommender systems. In this paper, we propose beeFormer, a framework for training sentence Transformer models with interaction data. We demonstrate that our models trained with beeFormer can transfer knowledge between datasets while outperforming not only semantic similarity sentence Transformers but also traditional collaborative filtering methods. We also show that training on multiple datasets from different domains accumulates knowledge in a single model, unlocking the possibility of training universal, domain-agnostic sentence Transformer models to mine text representations for recommender systems. Abstract

In this paper, we propose that the dot product pairwise matching attention layer, which is widely used in Transformer-based models, is redundant for the model performance. Attention, in its original formulation, has to be seen rather as a human-level tool to explore and/or visualize relevancy scores in sequential data. However, the way how it is constructed leads to significant computational complexity. Instead, we present SimpleTRON: Simple Transformer with O(N) Complexity, a simple and fast alternative without any approximation that, unlike other approximation models, does not have any architecture-related overhead and therefore can be seen as a purely linear Transformer-like model. This architecture, to the best of our knowledge, outperforms existing sub-quadratic attention approximation models on several tasks from the Long-Range Arena benchmark. Moreover, we show, that SimpleTRON can benefit from weight transfer from pretrained large language models, as its parameters can be fully transferable.

Abstract

This report describes the physics case, the resulting detector requirements, and the evolving detector concepts for the experimental program at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to those regions in the nucleon and nuclei where their structure is dominated by gluons. Moreover, polarized beams in the EIC will give unprecedented access to the spatial and spin structure of the proton, neutron, and light ions. The studies leading to this document were commissioned and organized by the EIC User Group with the objective of advancing the state and detail of the physics program and developing detector concepts that meet the emerging requirements in preparation for the realization of the EIC. The effort aims to provide the basis for further development of concepts for experimental equipment best suited for the science needs, including the importance of two complementary detectors and interaction regions. This report consists of three volumes. Volume I is an executive summary of our findings and developed concepts. In Volume II we describe studies of a wide range of physics measurements and the emerging requirements on detector acceptance and performance. Volume III discusses general-purpose detector concepts and the underlying technologies to meet the physics requirements. Abstract

Recently introduced EASE algorithm presents a simple and elegant way, how to solve the top-N recommendation task. In this paper, we introduce Neural EASE to further improve the performance of this algorithm by incorporating techniques for training modern neural networks. Also, there is a growing interest in the recsys community to utilize variational autoencoders (VAE) for this task. We introduce deep autoencoder FLVAE benefiting from multiple non-linear layers without an information bottleneck while not overfitting towards the identity. We show how to learn FLVAE in parallel with Neural EASE and achieve the state of the art performance on the MovieLens 20M dataset and competitive results on the Netflix Prize dataset.

Abstract

A monolithic integrated tactile sensor array is presented, which is used to perform non-invasive blood pressure monitoring of a patient. The advantage of this device compared to a hand cuff based approach is the capability of recording continuous blood pressure data. The capacitive, membrane-based sensor device is fabricated in an industrial CMOS-technology combined with post-CMOS micromachining. The capacitance change is detected by a S?-modulator. Abstract

Single-chip CMOS-based biosensors that feature microcantilevers as transducer elements are presented. The cantilevers are functionalized for the capturing of specific analytes, e.g., proteins or DNA. The binding of the analyte changes the mechanical properties of the cantilevers such as surface stress and resonant frequency, which can be detected by an integrated Wheatstone bridge. Abstract

A scanning force microscope with a base temperature below 300 mK is used for measuring the local electron density of a two-dimensional electron gas embedded in an Ga[Al]As heterostructure. At different separations between AFM tip and sample, a dc-voltage is applied between the tip and the electron gas while simultaneously recording the frequency shift of the oscillating tip. Using a plate capacitor model the local electron density can be extracted from the data. Abstract

The implementation of a tuning fork sensor in a scanning force microscope operational at 300 mK is described and the harmonic oscillator model of the sensor is motivated. These sensors exhibit very high quality factors at low temperatures. The nested feedback comprising the sensor, a phase locked loop and a conventional $z$-feedback is analyzed in terms of linear control theory and the dominant noise source of the system is identified. It is shown that the nested feedback has a low pass response and that the optimum feedback parameters for the phase-locked loop and the $z$-feedback can be determined from the knowledge of the tuning fork resonance alone regardless of the tip shape. The advantages of this system compared to pure phase control are discussed., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

22. Engaging Truant Adolescents: Results from a Multifaceted Intervention Pilot

Abstract

A truancy intervention pilot project was implemented in an urban high school and incorporated two innovative approaches: (a) student enrollment in a school-based health center for comprehensive health services, and (b) recruitment of teachers from within the students' school to engage in mentored relationships. Students with 15 or more days of unexcused absences the preceding year were randomly assigned to a control group (n = 37) or intervention group (n = 66). Of students assigned to the intervention group, 29 consented and participated in the intervention, whereas 37 could not be enrolled. All students were in serious academic difficulty and at risk for dropping out of school: 65% were failing 6 of 8 classes and 78% were absent from class for 41 or more days during the semester prior to intervention. Students in the intervention group demonstrated a significantly greater probability of remaining in school than students in the control group (p = 0.027). (Contains 5 tables.)

The composer has created all new music and sound design (no original sonic elements of the original film release have been used), and created and mixed a recording combining live musicians' performances and programmed sampler instruments that reflects and subtly enriches the audience's experience of and emotional connection to the main character's ordeal stranded on a life raft in the middle of the ocean.

Abstract

Background. Primary preventive implantation of implantable defibrillator (ICD) is according to current guidelines indicated in patients with heart failure NYHA (New York Heart Association) class II/III and LVEF <35%. Thanks to advances in heart failure pharmacotherapy, a decrease in mortality could render a benefit of ICD insufficient to justify its implantation in some patients. Methods. Study design: multicenter, prospective, randomized, controlled trial evaluating the benefit of implantation of Cardiac Resynchronization and Defibrillator Therapy (CRT-D) or CRT Alone (CRT-P) in non-ischemic patients with reduced left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF) and optimal pharmacotherapy without significant mid-wall myocardial fibrosis detected by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). The primary end-point: Re-hospitalization for heart failure, ventricular tachycardia, major adverse cardiac events (MACE). The secondary end-points: Sudden cardiac death, cardiovascular death, resuscitated cardiac arrest or sustained ventricular tachycardia, device-related complications, and change in quality of life. Course of the study: After a pharmacotherapy is optimized and significant mid-wall myocardial fibrosis excluded, patients will be randomized 1:1 to CRT-P or CRT-D implantation. Discussion. If our hypothesis is confirmed, this could provide evidence for the management of these patients with a significant impact on common daily praxis and health care expenditures. Trial registration. Abstract

Direct-acting oral anticoagulant use for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation is limited by bleeding concerns. Asundexian, a novel, oral small molecule activated coagulation factor XIa (FXIa) inhibitor, might reduce thrombosis with minimal effect on haemostasis. We aimed to determine the optimal dose of asundexian and to compare the incidence of bleeding with that of apixaban in patients with atrial fibrillation.

Abstract

Atrial fibrillation (AF), with a prevalence of 1% to 2%, is the most common cardiac arrhythmia. Without antithrombotic treatment, the annual risk of a cardioembolic event is 5% to 6%. The source of a cardioembolic event is a thrombus, which is usually formed in the left atrial appendage (LAA). Prevention of cardioembolic events involves treatment with anticoagulant drugs: either vitamin K antagonists or, recently, novel oral anticoagulants (NOAC). The other (nonpharmacologic) option for the prevention of a cardioembolic event involves interventional occlusion of the LAA.Objective: To determine whether percutaneous LAA occlusion is noninferior to treatment with NOAC in AF patients indicated for long-term systemic anticoagulation.Study Design: The trial will be a prospective, multicenter, randomized noninferiority trial comparing 2 treatment strategies in moderate to high-risk AF patients (ie, patients with history of significant bleeding, or history of cardiovascular event(s), or a with CHA2DS2VASc ≥3 and HAS-BLED score ≥2). Patients will be randomized into a percutaneous LAA occlusion (group A) or a NOAC treatment (group B) in a 1:1 ratio; the randomization was done using Web-based randomization software. A total of 396 study participants (198 patients in each group) will be enrolled in the study. The primary end point will be the occurrence of any of the following events within 24months after randomization: stroke or transient ischemic attack (any type), systemic cardioembolic event, clinically significant bleeding, cardiovascular death, or a significant periprocedural or device-related complications.Conclusion: The PRAGUE-17 trial will determine if LAA occlusion is noninferior to treatment with NOAC in moderate- to high-risk AF patients. 44. Platelet RNA as a circulating biomarker trove for cancer diagnostics

Abstract

Platelets are multifunctional cell fragments, circulating in blood in high abundance. Platelets assist in thrombus formation, sensing of pathogens entering the blood stream, signaling to immune cells, releasing vascular remodeling factors, and, negatively, enhancing cancer metastasis. Platelets are ‘educated’ by their environment, including in patients with cancer. Cancer cells appear to initiate intraplatelet signaling, resulting in splicing of platelet pre‐mRNAs, and enhance secretion of cytokines. Platelets can induce leukocyte and endothelial cell modeling factors, for example, through adenine nucleotides (ATP), thereby facilitating extravasation of cancer cells. Besides releasing factors, platelets can also sequester RNAs and proteins released by cancer cells. Thus, platelets actively respond to queues from local and systemic conditions, thereby altering their transcriptome and molecular content. Platelets contain a rich repertoire of RNA species, including mRNAs, small non‐coding RNAs and circular RNAs; although studies regarding the functionality of the various platelet RNA species require more attention. Recent advances in high‐throughput characterization of platelet mRNAs revealed 10 to > 1000 altered mRNAs in platelets in the presence of disease. Hence, platelet RNA appears to be dynamically affected by pathological conditions, thus possibly providing opportunities to use platelet RNA as diagnostic, prognostic, predictive, or monitoring biomarkers. In this review, we cover the literature regarding the platelet RNA families, processing of platelet RNAs, and the potential application of platelet RNA as disease biomarkers.

Abstract

This article presents updates on several national issues in Czech Republic as of December 2001. The ruling coalition of the Civic Democratic party and the Social Democratic party passed an election law that effectively would exclude smaller parties from participation in parliament and other elected bodies and make it impossible for independent candidates to run in the regions. The judiciary, with the single exception of the constitutional court, cannot be relied on to uphold justice, especially in commercial or organized crime cases. The rise in gross domestic product growth is due to the inflow of foreign investment and general growth in the world economy.

Democracy in the Czech Republic has taken a clear turn for the worst. During the period covered by the report, the ruling coalition of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) and the Social Democratic party (CSSI) passed an election law that effectively would exclude smaller parties from participation in parliament and other elected bodies and make it impossible for independent candidates to run in regions. Czech economy, while receiving relatively positive evaluations from international observers, is struggling. Czech politics is dominated by party secretariats and by powerful party chairmen.

Abstract

Transcriptional activation is typically associated with increased acetylation of promoter histones. However, this paradigm does not apply to transcriptional activation of all genes. In this study we have characterized a group of genes that are repressed by histone acetylation. These histone hypoacetylation-activated genes (HHAAG) are normally repressed during exponential growth, when the cellular level of acetyl-CoA is high and global histone acetylation is also high. The HHAAG are induced during diauxic shift, when the levels of acetyl-CoA and global histone acetylation decrease. The histone hypoacetylation-induced activation of HHAAG is independent of Msn2/Msn4. The repression of HSP12, one of the HHAAG, is associated with well-defined nucleosomal structure in the promoter region, while histone hypoacetylation-induced activation correlates with delocalization of positioned nucleosomes or with reduced nucleosome occupancy. Correspondingly, unlike the majority of yeast genes, HHAAG are transcriptionally upregulated when expression of histone genes is reduced. Taken together, these results suggest a model in which histone acetylation is required for proper positioning of promoter nucleosomes and repression of HHAAG. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
