2. The Image of Higher Education in American Indian Popular Literature.

- Abstract
In their attempts to lead a dual-life experience, characters in popular literature written by and/or about Native American Indians occasionally enroll in institutions of higher education; like many of their real-life counterparts very few of these student characters find the experience to be a positive undertaking. This narrative pattern reflects a "tragic reality" in American higher education today. The paper deals with four novels which target specific problems encountered by Native American students in college, i.e.: "Wolfsong" (Louis Owen); "Turtle Belly" (Joel Monture); "First Eagle" (Tony Hillerman); and "Agoak" (Yves Theriault). Parallels can be drawn between reality and the negative image of higher education in American Indian popular literature, since the primary reasons for higher education's failure with Native Americans are outlined in the novels discussed: social maladjustment, disinterested faculty, irrelevant curriculum, lack of a support network, alienation from personal heritage, racism, etc. The paper suggests some ways to ameliorate the situation, such as establishing residence halls where a support community can be formed, hiring Native American counselors to facilitate positive peer communication, and organizing tutoring programs. Although one of the fundamental goals of AI is to understand and develop intelligent systems that have all the capabilities of humans, there is little active research directly pursuing this goal. We propose that AI for interactive computer games is an emerging application area in which this goal of human-level AI can successfully be pursued. Interactive computer games have increasingly complex and realistic worlds and increasingly complex and intelligent computer-controlled characters. In this article, we further motivate our proposal of using interactive computer games for AI research, review previous research on AI and games, and present the different game genres and the roles that human-level AI could play within these genres. We then describe the research issues and AI techniques that are relevant to each of these roles. Our conclusion is that interactive computer games provide a rich environment for incremental research on human-level AI.

Numerical spectral methods are alternatives to finite elements and finite differences for solving partial differential equations. In this paper, we discuss how characteristics particular to spectral methods make them ideally suited for some problems of relating covariances using the physically based governing equations. We examine the approximations required for the numerical method, and compare numerical spectral methods to finite element and finite difference methods. Finally, we demonstrate how the numerical spectral method can be applied to any valid log-permeability covariance by providing an example using a piece-wise linear covariance. The numerical spectral methods are computationally efficient and flexible. We conclude that numerical spectral methods offer an excellent practical way of using stochastic partial differential equations to derive the statistical characteristics of variables of interest in geohydrologic applications.

CARCINOMA ,CHAP-5 - Abstract
In two studies initiated in 1979 and 1981, 377 patients were treated for advanced epithelial ovarian cancer. In the first study patients were randomly assigned to receive Hexa-CAF (hexamethylmelamine, cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, 5-fluorouracil) or CHAP-5 (cyclophosphamide, hexamethylmelamine, doxorubicin, cisplatin for 5 days) and in the second study to receive CHAP-5 or CP (cyclophosphamide, cisplatin on 1 day). Patients who did not respond to Hexa-CAF were offered subsequent treatment that included cisplatin. Median follow-up of patients in the first study was 9.5 years and in the second study 7.7 years. At 10 years 9% of the patients initially treated with Hexa-CAF and 21% of patients assigned to CHAP-5 were alive. Among the 10-year survivors treated with Hexa-CAF, 50% had experienced progressive disease but were alive as a result of retreatment with a cisplatin regimen. The survival curves of both studies revealed that approximately 60% of the patients who reached a complete remission were alive at 5 years and 40% at 10 years. Patients with microscopic disease at second-look had a less favourable outlook: 35% survived 5 years. Not recognised at first publication of both studies was the influence of tumour grade on survival. Before 5 years of follow-up, the good prognosis of grade 1 tumours (well differentiated) could not be detected. About 50% of patients with grade 1 tumours were alive at 5 and 30% at 10 years while these survival rates were halved for the other grades. Combination chemotherapy with cisplatin can enhance survival by more than 10% at 5 and 10 years compared with the best treatment of the precisplatin era: Hexa-CAF.
