Abstract

Accretion disks around compact objects are expected to enter an unstable phase at high luminosity1. One instability may occur when the radiation pressure generated by accretion modifies the disk viscosity, resulting in the cyclic depletion and refilling of the inner disk on short timescales2. Such a scenario, however, has only been quantitatively verified for a single stellar-mass black hole3,4,5. Although there are hints of these cycles in a few isolated cases6,7,8,9,10, their apparent absence in the variable emission of most bright accreting neutron stars and black holes has been a continuing puzzle11. Here we report the presence of the same multiwavelength instability around an accreting neutron star. Moreover, we show that the variability across the electromagnetic spectrum—from radio to X-ray—of both black holes and neutron stars at high accretion rates can be explained consistently if the accretion disks are unstable, producing relativistic ejections during transitions that deplete or refill the inner disk. Such a new association allows us to identify the main physical components responsible for the fast multiwavelength variability of highly accreting compact objects., The authors thank the referees for the constructive comments which improved the manuscript. Abstract

In X-ray observations of hard state black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs), rapid variations in accretion disc and coronal power-law emission are correlated and show Fourier-frequency-dependent time lags. On short (⁠|$\sim$| 0.1 s) time-scales, these lags are thought to be due to reverberation and therefore may depend strongly on the geometry of the corona. Low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are variations in X-ray flux that have been suggested to arise because of geometric changes in the corona, possibly due to general relativistic Lense–Thirring precession. Therefore, one might expect the short-term time lags to vary on the QPO time-scale. We performed novel spectral-timing analyses on Neutron Star Interior Composition ExploreR observations of the BHXRB MAXI J1820+070 during the hard state of its outburst in 2018 to investigate how the short-term time lags between a disc-dominated and a coronal power-law-dominated energy band vary on different time-scales. Our method can distinguish between variability due to the QPO and broad-band noise, and we find a linear correlation between the power-law flux and lag amplitude that is strongest at the QPO frequency. We also introduce a new method to resolve the QPO signal and determine the QPO phase dependence of the flux and lag variations, finding that both are very similar. Our results are consistent with a geometric origin of QPOs, but also provide evidence for a dynamic corona with a geometry varying in a similar way over a broad range of time-scales, not just the QPO time-scale. 11. How to support Early Career Astronomers: an ECA perspective

Abstract

Diversity, inclusion, equity and a supportive environment are particularly important for Early Career Astronomers (ECAs) to connect and learn navigating the academic system in permanent evolution (e.g., responding to pandemic, climate change and diversity crises). Securing the next job, building a mentoring network, finding support at work while ultimately developing a sustainable behavior is important, yet challenging, and such issues must be addressed simultaneously internationally and at the level of individual institutions.Over the past years I've been actively involved in several (international) initiatives for early-career astronomers, including creating an informal "early career astronomers" facebook discussion group, the "early career astronomers & their supporters" session at EAS 2021 (and 2022), and several resource documents on applying to PhDs. In this talk I will draw on my experiences from these initiatives and share 10 take away points for "how to support early career astronomers", for both early career astronomers and their supporters.

Abstract

The X-ray emission of black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs) often shows quasi- periodic oscillations (QPOs), that originate from the close proximity of the black hole. As such, QPOs trace the behaviour of the accreted material in the most extreme gravitational environments. However, the physical origin of the QPO is still the subject of debate: it could either be geometric, arising from systematic changes in the accretion geometry, or intrinsic, resulting from modulations in intrinsic properties of the accretion flow. In this thesis, I present the results of two novel approaches to understanding the QPO origin, both investigating the observed lag between the QPO signal in different energy bands. After intro- ducing the timing properties of black holes, I first discuss the short-timescale evolution of the QPO lag in the BHXRB GRS 1915+105. Unexpectedly, I find that this lag increases systematically over 5–10 QPO cycles. Simultaneously, the QPO amplitude rises and falls in an enveloping fashion, dubbed coherent intervals. To interpret this result, I formulate a geometric toy model for the QPO: differential vertical precession of the inner accretion flow. In addition, I present a systematic analysis of the QPO lag in a sample of fifteen BHXRBs. I find that the lag associated with the Type-C QPO significantly depends on the source inclination, strongly suggesting a geometric QPO origin. The found inclination dependence is consistent with Lense-Thirring precession as the QPO origin, taking into account dominant relativistic effects. Finally, I also show prilimary results of a coherent-interval resolved analysis of the QPO in GRS 1915+105, which provides a promising new handle on the origin of QPOs.
