We apply the combinatorial theory of spherical varieties to characterize the momentum polytopes of polarized projective spherical varieties. This enables us to derive a classification of these varieties, without specifying the open orbit, as well as a classification of all Fano spherical varieties. Let G be a complex connected reductive group. I. Losev has shown that a smooth affine spherical G-variety X is uniquely determined by its weight monoid, which is the set of irreducible representations of G that occur in the coordinate ring of X. In this paper we use a combinatorial characterization of the weight monoids of smooth affine spherical varieties to classify: (a) all such varieties when G is $\mathrm{SL}(2) \times \mathbb{C}^{\times}$ and (b) all such varieties for G simple which have a G-saturated weight monoid of full rank. We also use the characterization and F. Knop's classification theorem for multiplicity free Hamiltonian manifolds to give a new proof of C. We determine, under a certain assumption, the Alexeev-Brion moduli scheme M_S of affine spherical G-varieties with a prescribed weight monoid S. The Jordan type of a nilpotent matrix is the partition giving the sizes of its Jordan blocks. We study pairs of partitions $(P,Q)$, where $Q={\mathcal Q}(P)$ is the Jordan type of a generic nilpotent matrix A commuting with a nilpotent matrix B of Jordan type $ P$. T. Ko\v{s}ir and P. Oblak have shown that $Q$ has parts that differ pairwise by at least two. Such partitions, which are also known as "super distinct" or "Rogers-Ramanujan", are exactly those that are stable or "self-large" in the sense that ${\mathcal Q}(Q)=Q$. In 2012 P. Oblak formulated a conjecture concerning the cardinality of the set of partitions $P$ such that ${\mathcal Q}(P)$ is a given stable partition $ Q$ with two parts, and proved some special cases. R. Zhao refined this to posit that those partitions $P$ such that ${\mathcal Q}(P)= Q=(u,u-r)$ with $u>r\ge 2$ could be arranged in an $(r-1)$ by $(u-r)$ table ${\mathcal T}(Q)$ where the entry in the $k$-th row and $\ell$-th column has $k+\ell$ parts. We study Alexeev and Brion's moduli scheme $M_\Gamma$ of affine spherical varieties with weight monoid $\Gamma$ under the assumption that $\Gamma$ is free. With this chapter we provide a compact yet complete survey of two most remarkable "representation theorems": every arguesian projective geometry is represented by an essentially unique vector space, and every arguesian Hilbert geometry is represented by an essentially unique generalized Hilbert space. C. Piron's original representation theorem for propositional systems is then a corollary: it says that every irreducible, complete, atomistic, orthomodular lattice satisfying the covering law and of rank at least 4 is isomorphic to the lattice of closed subspaces of an essentially unique generalized Hilbert space. We show that the natural mathematical structure to describe a physical entity by means of its states and its properties within the Geneva-Brussels approach is that of a state property system. We prove that the category of state property systems (and morphisms), SP, is equivalent to the category of closure spaces (and continuous maps), Cls.
