Search

We present a statistically complete sample of very X-ray luminous galaxy clusters detected in the MAssive Cluster Survey (MACS). This second MACS release comprises all 34 MACS clusters with nominal X-ray fluxes in excess of 2x10^(-12) erg/s/cm^2 (0.1-2.4 keV) in the ROSAT Bright Source Catalogue; two thirds of them are new discoveries. Extending over the redshift range from 0.3 to 0.5, this subset complements the complete sample of the 12 most distant MACS clusters (z>0.5) published in 2007 and further exemplifies the efficacy of X-ray selection for the compilation of samples of intrinsically massive galaxy clusters. Extensive follow-up observations with Chandra/ACIS led to three additional MACS cluster candidates being eliminated as (predominantly) X-ray point sources. For another four clusters --- which, however, remain in our sample of 34 --- the point-source contamination was found to be about 50%. The median X-ray luminosity of 1.3x10^45 erg/s (0.1-2.4 keV, Chandra, within r_500) of the clusters in this subsample demonstrates the power of the MACS survey strategy to find the most extreme and rarest clusters out to significant redshift. We present the statistically complete and cosmologically most relevant subset of the twelve most distant galaxy clusters detected at z>0.5 by the MAssive Cluster Survey (MACS). Ten of these systems are new discoveries; only two (MACSJ0018.5+1626 aka CL0016+1609, and MACSJ0454.1-0300 aka MS0451.6-0305) were previously known. We have assembled a sample of 115 galaxy clusters at 0.1vailable="" region="" files="" containing="" contours="" smoothed="" emission.="" structural="" properties="" were="" investigated="" found="" a="" significant="" absence="" relaxed="" (as="" determined="" by="" centroid="" shift="" measurements)="" at="" z="">0.5. The slope of the surface brightness profiles at large radii were steeper on average by 15% than the slope obtained by fitting a simple beta-model to the emission. This slope was also found to be correlated with cluster temperature, with some indication that the correlation is weaker for the clusters at z>0.5. We measured the mean metal abundance of the cluster gas as a function of redshift and found significant evolution, with the abundances dropping by 50% between z=0.1 and z~1. This evolution was still present (although less significant) when the cluster cores were excluded from the abundance measurements, indicating that the evolution is not solely due to the disappearance of relaxed, cool core clusters (which are known to have enhanced core metal abundances) from the population at z>0.5., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures. Deep XMM and Chandra observations of ClJ1226.9+3332 at z=0.89 have enabled the most detailed X-ray mass analysis of any such high-redshift galaxy cluster. The XMM temperature profile of the system shows no sign of central cooling, with a hot core and a radially declining profile. A temperature map shows asymmetry with a hot region that appears to be associated with a subclump of galaxies at the cluster redshift, but is not visible in the X-ray surface brightness. This is likely to be result of a merger event in the cluster, but does not appear to significantly affect the overall temperature profile. The XMM temperature profile, and combined Chandra and XMM emissivity profile allowed precise measurements of the global properties of ClJ1226.9+3332; we find kT=10.4+/-0.6keV, Z=0.16+/-0.05\Zsol, and M=5.2^{+1.0}_{-0.8}x10^{14}Msol. We obtain profiles of the metallicity, entropy, cooling time and gas fraction, and find a high concentration parameter for the total density profile of the system. The global properties are compared with the local LT and MT relations, and we are able to make the first observational test of the predicted evolution of the YM relation. We find that departures from these scaling relations are most likely caused by an underestimate of the total mass by ~30% in the X-ray hydrostatic mass analysis due to the apparent recent or ongoing merger activity., Comment: 14 pages, 19 figures. We present gas and total mass profiles for 13 low-redshift, relaxed clusters spanning a temperature range 0.7-9 keV, derived from all available Chandra data of sufficient quality. In all clusters, gas temperature profiles are measured to large radii (Vikhlinin et al.) so that direct hydrostatic mass estimates are possible to nearly r_500 or beyond. The gas density was accurately traced to larger radii; its profile is not described well by a beta-model, showing continuous steepening with radius. The derived rho_tot profiles and their scaling with mass generally follow the Navarro-Frenk-White model with concentration expected for dark matter halos in LambdaCDM cosmology. In the inner region (r<0.1r_500), the gas density and temperature profiles exhibit significant scatter and trends with mass, but they become nearly self-similar at larger radii. Correspondingly, we find that the slope of the mass-temperature relation for these relaxed clusters is in good agreement with the simple self-similar behavior, M_500 ~ T^alpha, where alpha=(1.5-1.6)+-0.1, if the gas temperatures are measured excluding the central cool cores. The normalization of this M-T relation is significantly, by =~ 30%, higher than most previous X-ray determinations. We derive accurate gas mass fraction profiles, which show increase both with radius and cluster mass. The enclosed f_gas profiles within r_2500 =~ 0.4 r_500 have not yet reached any asymptotic value and are still far (by a factor of 1.5-2) from the Universal baryon fraction according to the CMB observations. We present Chandra gas temperature profiles at large radii for a sample of 13 nearby, relaxed galaxy clusters and groups, which includes A133, A262, A383, A478, A907, A1413, A1795, A1991, A2029, A2390, MKW4, RXJ1159+5531, and USGC S152. The sample covers a range of average temperatures from 1 to 10 keV. The clusters are selected from the archive or observed by us to have sufficient exposures and off-center area coverage to enable accurate background subtraction and reach the temperature accuracy of better than 20-30% at least to r=0.4-0.5 r_180, and for the three best clusters, to 0.6-0.7 r_180. For all clusters, we find cool gas in the cores, outside of which the temperature reaches a peak at r =~ 0.15 r_180 and then declines to ~0.5 of its peak value at r =~ 0.5 r_180. When the profiles are scaled by the cluster average temperature (excluding cool cores) and the estimated virial radius, they show large scatter at small radii, but remarkable similarity at r>0.1-0.2 r_180 for all but one cluster (A2390). Our results are in good agreement with previous measurements from ASCA by Markevitch et al. and from Beppo-SAX by DeGrandi & Molendi. Four clusters have recent XMM-Newton temperature profiles, two of which agree with our results, and we discuss reasons for disagreement for the other two. We present constraints on the mean dark energy density, Omega_X and dark energy equation of state parameter, w_X, based on Chandra measurements of the X-ray gas mass fraction in 26 X-ray luminous, dynamically relaxed galaxy clusters spanning the redshift range 0.07-1, the same data require w_X<-0.7 at 95 per cent confidence. Similar results on the mean matter density and dark energy equation of state parameter, Omega_m=0.24\pm0.04 and w_X=-1.20^{+0.24}_{-0.28}, are obtained by replacing the CMB data with standard priors on the Hubble constant and mean baryon density and assuming a flat geometry., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables. The Chandra X-Ray Observatory (CXO), the x-ray component of NASA's Great Observatories, was launched on 1999, July 23 by the Space Shuttle Columbia. After satellite systems activation, the first x-rays focussed by the telescope were observed on 1999, August 12. Beginning with the initial observation it was clear that the telescope had survived the launch environment and was operating as expected. Despite an initial surprise due to the discovery that the telescope was far more efficient for concentrating CCD-damaging low-energy protons than had been anticipated, the observatory is performing well and is returning superb scientific data. The launch of the Chandra X-ray Observatory in July 1999 opened a new era in X-ray astronomy. Its unprecedented, <0.5" spatial resolution and low background are providing views of the X-ray sky 10-100 times fainter than previously possible. We have initiated a serendipitous survey (ChaMP) using Chandra archival data to flux limits covering the range between those reached by current satellites and those of the small area Chandra deep surveys. We estimate the survey will cover ~5 sq.deg./year to X-ray fluxes (2-10 keV) in the range 1E(-13)-6E(-16) erg/cm^2/s discovering ~2000 new X-ray sources, ~80% of which are expected to be AGN. The ChaMP has two parts, the extragalactic survey (ChaMP) and the galactic plane survey (ChaMPlane). ChaMP promises profoundly new science return on a number of key questions at the current frontier of many areas of astronomy including (1) locating and studying high redshift clusters and so constraining cosmological parameters (2) defining the true population of AGN, including those that are absorbed, and so constraining the accretion history of the universe, (3) filling in the gap in the luminosity/redshift plane between Chandra deep and previous surveys in studying the CXRB, (4) studying coronal emission from late-type stars and (5) search for CVs and quiescent Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (qLXMBs) to measure their luminosity functions. The Chandra X-Ray Observatory (CXO), the x-ray component of NASA's Great Observatories, was launched early in the morning of 1999, July 23 by the Space Shuttle Columbia. The Shuttle launch was only the first step in placing the observatory in orbit. After release from the cargo bay, the Inertial Upper Stage performed two firings, and separated from the observatory as planned. Finally, after five firings of Chandra's own Integral Propulsion System--- the last of which took place 15 days after launch--- the observatory was placed in its highly elliptical orbit of 140,000 km apogee and 10,000 km perigee. After activation, the first x-rays focussed by the telescope were observed on 1999, August 12. Beginning with these initial observations one could see that the telescope had survived the launch environment and was operating as expected. The month following the opening of the sunshade door was spent adjusting the focus for each set of instrument configurations, determining the optical axis, calibrating the star camera, establishing the relative response functions, determining energy scales, and taking a series of "publicity" images. Each observation proved to be far more revealing than was expected. Finally, and despite an initial surprise and setback due to the discovery that the Chandra x-ray telescope was far more efficient for concentrating low-energy protons than had been anticipated, the observatory is performing well and is returning superb scientific data. The study measures the X-ray reflectivity of the AXAF VETA-I optic and compares it with theoretical predictions. Measurements made at energies of 0.28, 0.9, 1.5, 2.1, and 2.3 keV are compared with predictions based on ray trace calculations. Results on the variation of the reflectivity with energy as well as the absolute value of the reflectivity are presented. A synchrotron reflectivity measurement with a high-energy resolution over the range 0.26 to 1.8 keV on a flat Zerodur sample is also reported. Evidence is found for contamination of the flat by a thin layer of carbon on the surface, and the possibility of alteration of the surface composition of the VETA-I mirror, perhaps by the polishing technique. The overall agreement between the measured and calculated effective area of VETA-I is between 2.6 and 10 percent. Measurements at individual energies deviate from the best-fitting calculation to 0.3 to 0.8 percent, averaging 0.6 percent at energies below the high energy cutoff of the mirror reflectivity, and are as high as 20.7 percent at the cutoff. more...

Initial core scan data of the VETA-1 X-ray mirror proved disappointing, showing considerable unpredicted image structure and poor measured FWHM. 2-D core scans were performed, providing important insight into the nature of the distortion. Image deconvolutions using a raytraced model PSF was performed successfully to reinforce our conclusion regarding the origin of the astigmatism. A mechanical correction was made to the optical structure, and the minor was tested successfully (FWHM 0.22 arcsec) as a result. more...

X-ray testing of the AXAF outer mirror pairs, in the VETA-1 configuration, reveals a point spread function (PSF) with unexpectedly large wings at low energies. Although the angular dependence in the wings of the PSF is close to that expected for diffractive scattering from surface roughness, the energy dependence differs substantially. Analyses of the observed X-ray PSF, images near ring focus, and single-quadrant images at conjugate focus suggest that the excess scattering observed at low X-ray energies results from diffractive scattering by relatively small grains (as small as a few tenths micrometer in radius). We develop a simple model for the contribution of scattering by particulates to the PSF. Merging this model with that for scattering by surface roughness, we fit the combined model to the observed energy-dependent PSF, in order to estimate parameters and associated uncertainties characterizing the grain-size distribution and the surface-roughness power spectral density. In particular, we find that the fractional coverage of the mirrors by particulates is approximately 1 x 10 exp -4 (for grain radii between 0.1 and 10 microns), and that the rms surface-roughness is approximately 0.7 nm (for spatial frequencies between 1/mm and 1000/mm). more...

The energy bandwidth and total throughput of a grazing incidence optics system is a strong function of the X-ray reflectivity of the surface coating. In support of the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF), studies are underway to evaluate and characterize the reflectivity of potential AXAF coatings. Here we report on results obtained for Au, Ir, and Ni coatings produced by electron-beam evaporation, evaporation with ion-assist, and sputtering. Effects of coating thickness and deposition angle have been evaluated at 6.4 and 8.1 keV; the highest reflectivities are those of the thinner, about 200 A vs about 700 A, coatings. While considerable variations exist, the best Ir samples have higher reflectivity than any of the Au coatings. Data results have been compared with models for theoretical reflectivity, particularly with regard to the effective density of the coatings. Independent measurements of the coating densities have been carried out for comparison with the reflectivity results. more...

Because particles of sizes larger than a few tenths microns adversely affect high resolution X-ray telescopes by scattering and absorbing X-rays, the cleanliness required to maintain the about 1 percent overall calibration precision desired for the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF) is being investigated. At the grazing angles used for the AXAF mirrors, each particle shadows a surface area about 100 times its geometric area, necessitating glass occlusion specifications much more stringent than typically stipulated for visible-light particulate contamination. On test flats coated with gold, controlled levels of contamination have been deposited spanning the range from 5 x 10 to the -5th to 0.005 fractional area covered, and the absorption component of extinction has been measured over a range of grazing angles and X-ray energies to verify the predicted effects of particulate contamination. more...

The results of a spectral analysis of the Einstein observations of the bulge of M31 are reported. The data can be fitted with a hard thermal spectrum with characteristic temperature kT of about 6-13 keV (at 90 percent confidence). No intrinsic absorption above the galactic value of N(H) is required. These results are in agreement with the presence in the bulge of M31 of a population of low-mass binary sources similar to those of the Milky Way. more...

The AXAF Technology Mirror Assembly (TMA) was characterized prior to X-ray testing by properties measured mechanically or with visible light; these include alignment offsets, roundness and global-axial-slope errors, axial-figure errors with characteristic lengths greater than about five mm, and surface roughness with scale lengths between about 0.005 and 0.5 mm. X-ray observations of the nearby cluster Abell 1367 were made with the Imaging Proportional Counter (IPC) and High Resolution Imager (HRI) aboard the Einstein Observatory. The IPC is used to study the diffuse cluster emission. With the HRI, eight point sources are detected above the diffuse cluster emission, three of which are apparently associated with cluster galaxies. In addition, the HRI observations have resolved 13 extended features with characteristic radii of order arcmin, eight of which are associated with cluster galaxies. These extended sources have luminosities of 1.5-6.5 x 10 to the 41st per (H0)50)-squared ergs per sec in the 0.5-4.5 keV band and constitute about 60% of the total cluster emission. The results of Einstein Observatory studies of X-ray emission from normal galaxies, including the LMC and SMC, M31, M33, M101, NGC 247, M81 and M100, and N253 are surveyed. The X-ray luminosity of normal galaxies is proportional to their optical luminosity, revealing no strong dependence on galaxy type. The number of individual sources detected are comparable to the number of sources expected on mass considerations. There are substantial numbers of X-ray sources in the Magellanic Clouds with luminosities in the range 10 to the 35th-36th ergs/s, lower than most X-ray binaries but higher than known uncollapsed stellar systems. About seven X-ray sources with luminosities of at least 10 to the 39th ergs/s in the 0.5-3.0 keV band have been found in the arms of nearby spiral galaxies. more...

X-ray observations of the M81 galaxy were taken by the high resolution imager and the monitor proportional counter aboard the Einstein observatory. The luminosity is about 1.7 X 10 to the 40th ergs/s. It is suggested that M81 probably has an active nucleus two orders of magnitude less luminous than any other well-established case. Any critical 'turn-on' luminosity is thus very low and approaches that of compact X-ray binary systems. The agreement of the alpha hydrogen/X-ray ratio of M81 suggests that the physics of the activity is not strongly different at these low luminosities from that in the normal range more...

Einstein imaging observations of four X-ray clusters of galaxies characterized by a double X-ray surface brightness and thus mass distribution are presented. The clusters A98, A115, A1750 and SC 0627-54 were found to exhibit two enhancements in their X-ray surface brightness distributions in observations made with the Einstein Imaging Proportional Counter. Calculations of the probability that the clusters represent chance superpositions indicate that the double clusters are physically associated. The radial distributions of the components are inconsistent with those of single point sources, and have been used to derive cluster luminosities which are typical of rich clusters. Masses of the subclusters are also found to be typical of bound and virialized clusters with gas contributing 10%. Within the framework of the hierarchical theory of galactic clustering, the double clusters are suggested to represent an intermediate evolutionary stage before the merger of subclusters into a relaxed Coma-type cluster. more...

A history of the events leading to the development and flight of the Einstein Observatory is given. The advantages of using grazing-incidence telescopes for solar and extrasolar X-ray astronomy is first discussed and followed by a description of the HEAO program. The Einstein Observatory marks a departure from the manner in which X-ray investigations are carried out, from individual experiments to the shared use of large facilities. The Observatory has achieved a sensitivity to point sources of 10 to the -14th erg/sq cm-sec in the 1-3 keV band, a flux 500 times smaller than previously detected and about 10 million times smaller than that of the first extrasolar source detected in 1962. The design philosophy of the Observatory entails three principles: (1) the unified scientific approach, (2) the establishment of spacecraft requirements at lowest acceptable levels that still allow operating flexibility, and (3) the idea of 'soft' rather than 'hard' failure. The mirror design, including the high resolution imager, the imaging proportional counter, and the solid-state and focal plane crystal spectrometers, is also given. An account of the struggle to gain acceptance by the scientific community and the funding agencies of the need for the Einstein Observatory mission is discussed. Finally, results of observations made by the Observatory are presented in detail, along with plans for future observation experiments. more...

The paper describes an X-ray detector using microchannel plates as a photocathode surface and imaging photoelectron multiplier, and a crossed wire grid as a two-dimensional position-sensitive detector. The position resolution is 10 microns. The crossed wire grid consists of 100-micron-diam wires on 200-micron centers. Position sensing is accomplished by electronic interpolation to 1/20 of the wire spacing. The quantum efficiency of the microchannel plates varies from 29% at 0.28 keV to 5% at 3 keV. This detector will provide second-of-arc X-ray imaging in the focal plane of the 342.9-cm focal length grazing-incidence telescope being prepared for the HEAO-B observatory. By addition of suitable photocathodes, it can be used for single-photon imaging light detection in the UV, visible, and near-IR-ranges. In all cases, it gives a very low dark counting rate, allows timing of individual events to 1 microsec or less, and can handle counting rates up to 10,000 per sec. more...

The mirrors for the Einstein Observatory represent a substantial advance in the state of the art X-ray optics, and have been tested more thoroughly than previous telescopes. The image is characterized by a narrow, wavelength independent core, and broad energy dependent wings. The width of the core is about that expected from mechanical and visible light measurements taken during fabrication and assembly. The wings of the response function are caused by microscopic surface scattering, but only a qualitative understanding of this process exists. Improvement in surface texture to reduce the wide angle scatter is the most urgent task in the development of large X-ray optics. The manufacture and properties of a grating intended for extrasolar X-ray studies are described. The manufacturing process uses a split laser beam exposing an interference pattern on the photoresist-coated glass plated with a nickel parting layer. The grating, supporting structure, and mounting frame are electrodeposited on the nickel parting layer, and the final product is lifted from the glass substrate by selective etching of the nickel. A model was derived which relates the number of counts received in a given order m as a function of photon wavenumber. A 4-deg beam line was used to measure the efficiencies of gold transmission gratings for diffraction of X-rays in the range of 45 to 275 eV. A description of the S-054 X-ray telescope on Skylab is presented with a discussion of the experimental objectives, observing program, data reduction and analysis. Some results from the Skylab mission are given. The telescope photographically records high-resolution images of the solar corona in several broadband regions of the soft X-ray spectrum. It includes an objective grating used to study the line spectrum. The spatial resolution, sensitivity, dynamic range and time resolution of the instrument were chosen to survey a wide variety of solar phenomena. It embodies improvements in design, fabrication, and calibration techniques which were developed over a ten-year period. The observing program was devised to optimize the use of the instrument and to provide studies on a wide range of time scales. The data analysis program includes morphological studies and quantitative analysis using digitized images. A small sample of the data obtained in the mission is presented to demonstrate the type of information that is available and the kinds of results that can be obtained from it. more...

The article describes the X-ray detector which will provide second-of-arc images for the HEAO-B X-ray observatory. The instrument uses microchannel plates as a photocathode surface and imaging photoelectron multiplier, and a crossed wire grid as a two-dimensional position-sensitive detector. Position determination is accomplished by electronic interpolation between the coarse grid wires. The detector provides the arrival time and position of each event which occurs within its field of view. Measurements of the spatial resolution (15 microns), temporal resolution (7.8 microsec), image distortion (less than 10 microns), uniformity of efficiency (less than plus or minus 10%), dark counting rate (0.2 cts/sq cm/s), and quantum efficiency (10% at 1.54 keV) of this detector are described. The X-ray telescope of the second High Energy Astronomy Observatory (HEAO-B) is described. The design consists of four concentric paraboloid/hyperboloid pairs. Focal length is 3.44 meters, paraboloid diameters vary from 580-336 mm, grazing angles vary from 70 to 40 arcmin for paraxial rays, segment lengths are 511 mm. The reflecting surfaces are nickel-coated fused quartz and the resolution is limited by assembly errors (for small field angles) and design aberrations (for large field angles). The local slope, roundness, and surface roughness are identified as the primary optical tolerances connected with the individual elements. more...

Soft X-ray photographs of the solar corona have been obtained on four flights of a rocket-borne grazing incidence telescope having a resolution of a few arc sec. The configuration of the X-ray emitting structures in the corona has been compared to the magnetic field distribution measured by photospheric longitudinal magnetograms. The X-ray structures trace the three-dimensional configuration of the magnetic field through the lower corona. Active regions in the corona take the form of tubular structures connecting regions of opposite magnetic polarity within the same or adjacent chromospheric active regions. Higher, larger structures link widely separated active regions into complexes of activity covering substantial fractions of the disk. The complexes are separated by areas of low average field in the photosphere. Interconnections across the solar equator appear to originate over areas of preceding polarity. more...
