Abstract

Rationale: Micrometeorites are extraterrestrial particles smaller than ~2 mm in diameter, most of which melted during atmospheric entry and crystallised or quenched to form 'cosmic spherules'. Their parentage among meteorite groups can be inferred from triple‐oxygen isotope compositions, for example, by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). This method uses sample efficiently, preserving spherules for other investigations. While SIMS precisions are improving steadily, application requires assumptions about instrumental mass fractionation, which is controlled by sample chemistry and mineralogy (matrix effects). Methods: We have developed a generic SIMS method using sensitive high‐mass resolution ion micro probe‐stable isotope (SHRIMP‐SI) that can be applied to finely crystalline igneous textures as in cosmic spherules. We correct for oxygen isotope matrix effects using the bulk chemistry of samples obtained by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS) and model bulk chemical compositions as three‐component mixtures of olivine, basaltic glass and Fe‐oxide (magnetite), finding a unique matrix correction for each target. Results: Our first results for cosmic spherules from East Antarctica compare favourably with established micrometeorite groups defined by precise and accurate but consumptive bulk oxygen isotope methods. The Fe‐oxide content of each spherule is the main control on magnitude of oxygen isotope ratio bias, with effects on δ18O up to ~6‰. Our main peak in compositions closely coincides with so‐called 'Group 1' objects identified by consumptive methods. Conclusions: The magnitude of SIMS matrix effects we find is similar to the previous intraspherule variations, which are now the limiting factor in understanding their compositions. The matrix effect for each spherule should be assessed quantitatively and individually, especially addressing Fe‐oxide content. We expect micrometeorite triple‐oxygen isotope compositions obtained by SIMS to converge on the main clusters (Groups 1 to 4) after correction firstly for magnetite content and secondarily for other phases (e.g., basaltic glass) in each target. Abstract

Large airbursts, the most frequent hazardous impact events, are estimated to occur orders of magnitude more frequently than crater-forming impacts. However, finding traces of these events is impeded by the difficulty of identifying them in the recent geological record. Here, we describe condensation spherules found on top of Walnumfjellet in the Sør Rondane Mountains, Antarctica. Affinities with similar spherules found in EPICA Dome C and Dome Fuji ice cores suggest that these particles were produced during a single-asteroid impact ca. 430 thousand years (ka) ago. The lack of a confirmed crater on the Antarctic ice sheet and geochemical and 18O-poor oxygen isotope signatures allow us to hypothesize that the impact particles result from a touchdown event, in which a projectile vapor jet interacts with the Antarctic ice sheet. 16. Unmelted Antarctic micrometeorites at the nanoscale

Abstract

Unmelted micrometeorites represent unique extraterrestrial materials that largely preserved the original petrographic, mineralogical and geochemical properties of their precursor parent bodies or phases [e.g., 1]. Five unmelted and scoriaceous micrometeorites, with diameters varying between 142 and 408 μm, that were recovered from sediment traps in the Sør Rondane Mountains of East Antarctica, have been analyzed in a non-destructive way using the ID16B Nano-Analysis beamline at the ESRF in Grenoble. For each particle, XRF and XRD spectra were measured simultaneously at a spatial resolution of 250 nm, while CT data were obtained at spatial resolutions varying between 100 and 225 nm.Based on the structural, chemical, and mineralogical data collected, the characterized micrometeorites were classified as either scoriaceous or unmelted, with porosities calculated to vary from 8.9 to 23.3 %. The combined observations concerning the mineralogy, porosity and chemical composition for these particles all point towards a carbonaceous chondrite (CC) parentage, as suggested previously for comparable particles [2-3]. Using a Cameca IMS 1270 ion microprobe at the CRPG in Nancy, France, triple-oxygen isotope ratios confirm and refine the parentage for two of the studied particles, containing either refractory Mg-Al spinel or relict olivine minerals, to the CM-CO clan [4].References: [1] Van Ginneken et al. Abstract

Micrometeorites are estimated to represent the main part of the present flux of extraterrestrial matter found on the Earth’s surface and provide valuable samples to probe the interplanetary medium. Here, we describe large and representative collections of micrometeorites currently available to the scientific community. These include Antarctic collections from surface ice and snow, as well as glacial sediments from the eroded top of nunataks—summits outcropping from the icesheet—and moraines. Collections extracted from deep-sea sediments (DSS) produced a large number of micrometeorites, in particular, iron-rich cosmic spherules that are rarer in other collections. Collections from the old and stable surface of the Atacama Desert show that finding large numbers of micrometeorites is not restricted to polar regions or DSS. The advent of rooftop collections marks an important step into involving citizen science in the study of micrometeorites, as well as providing potential sampling locations over all latitudes to explore the modern flux. We explore their strengths of the collections to address specific scientific questions and their potential weaknesses. The future of micrometeorite research will involve the finding of large fossil micrometeorite collections and benefit from recent advances in sampling cosmic dust directly from the air.
