The west Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) region has undergone significant changes in temperature and seasonal ice dynamics since the mid-twentieth century, with strong impacts on the regional ecosystem, ocean chemistry and hydrographic properties. Changes to these long-term trends of warming and sea ice decline have been observed in the 21st century, but their consequences for ocean physics, chemistry and the ecology of the high-productivity shelf ecosystem are yet to be fully established. The WAP shelf is important for regional krill stocks and higher trophic levels, whilst the degree of variability and change in the physical environment and documented biological and biogeochemical responses make this a model system for how climate and sea ice changes might restructure high-latitude ecosystems. Although this region is arguably the best-measured and best-understood shelf region around Antarctica, significant gaps remain in spatial and temporal data capable of resolving the atmosphere-ice-ocean-ecosystem feedbacks that control the dynamics and evolution of this complex polar system. Here we summarise the current state of knowledge regarding the key mechanisms and interactions regulating the physical, biogeochemical and biological processes at work, the ways in which the shelf environment is changing, and the ecosystem response to the changes underway. We outline the overarching cross-disciplinary priorities for future research, as well as the most important discipline-specific objectives. Underpinning these priorities and objectives is the need to better define the causes, magnitude and timescales of variability and change at all levels of the system. A combination of traditional and innovative approaches will be critical to addressing these priorities and developing a co-ordinated observing system for the WAP shelf, which is required to detect and elucidate change into the future.

Phytoplankton distribution and concentrations of macronutrients and iron were studied in the Polar Frontal Zone (PFZ) and the eastern Weddell Gyre of the Southern Ocean, during austral autumn. HPLC analysis of algal pigments was combined with microscopy observations to assess algal distribution. Patterns of algal distribution were dictated by the frontal systems. Travelling from north to south, four distinctively different algal communities were observed, the composition of which could be explained by variations in nutrients, light climate and grazing pressure. North of the PFZ, low silicate levels (< 3 µM) were limiting diatom growth, and the algal community was dominated by prasinophytes. Silicate concentrations increased over the PFZ, which coincided with the dominance of diatoms. South of the PFZ, the open waters of the Weddell Gyre are characterised as a high-nutrient low-chlorophyll area. Low iron concentrations (< 0.4 nM on average) supported an algal community that was dominated by smaller size algae (< 20 µm). Deep wind-mixed layers (> 100 m depth) together with low incident irradiance in autumn were likely limiting algal growth. At the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ), the phytoplankton community consisted mainly of low numbers of flagellates (Chlorophyceae and haptophytes) and high numbers of microzooplankton, indicating phytoplankton control by grazing. The phytoplankton distribution patterns presented here and the relation with potential growth-controlling factors provides more insight in the mechanisms that control carbon fluxes from the atmosphere into the ocean interior.

Over the past two decades, with recognition that the ocean's sea-ice cover is neither insensitive to climate change nor a barrier to light and matter, research in sea-ice biogeochemistry has accelerated significantly, bringing together a multi-disciplinary community from a variety of fields. This disciplinary diversity has contributed a wide range of methodological techniques and approaches to sea-ice studies, complicating comparisons of the results and the development of conceptual and numerical models to describe the important biogeochemical processes occurring in sea ice. Almost all chemical elements, compounds, and biogeochemical processes relevant to Earth system science are measured in sea ice, with published methods available for determiningbiomass, pigments, net community production, primary production, bacterial activity, macronutrients, numerous natural and anthropogenic organic compounds, trace elements, reactive and inert gases, sulfur species, the carbon dioxide system parameters, stable isotopes, and water-ice-Atmosphere fluxes of gases, liquids, and solids. For most of these measurements, multiple sampling and processing techniques are available, but to date there has been little intercomparison or intercalibration between methods. In addition, researchers collect different types of ancillary data and document their samples differently, further confounding comparisons between studies. These problems are compounded by the heterogeneity of sea ice, in which even adjacent cores can have dramatically different biogeochemical compositions. We recommend that, in future investigations, researchers design their programs based on nested sampling patterns, collect a core suite of ancillary measurements, and employ a standard approach for sample identification and documentation. Phytoplankton identification and abundance data are now commonly feeding plankton distribution databases worldwide. This study is a first attempt to compile the largest possible body of data available from different databases as well as from individual published or unpublished datasets regarding diatom distribution in the world ocean. The data obtained originate from time series studies as well as spatial studies. This effort is supported by the Marine Ecosystem Model Inter-Comparison Project (MAREMIP), which aims at building consistent datasets for the main plankton functional types (PFTs) in order to help validate biogeochemical ocean models by using carbon (C) biomass derived from abundance data. In this study we collected over 293 000 individual geo-referenced data points with diatom abundances from bottle and net sampling. Sampling site distribution was not homogeneous, with 58% of data in the Atlantic, 20% in the Arctic, 12% in the Pacific, 8% in the Indian and 1% in the Southern Ocean. A total of 136 different genera and 607 different species were identified after spell checking and name correction. Only a small fraction of these data were also documented for biovolumes and an even smaller fraction was converted to C biomass. As it is virtually impossible to reconstruct everyone's method for biovolume calculation, which is usually not indicated in the datasets, we decided to undertake the effort to document, for every distinct species, the minimum and maximum cell dimensions, and to convert all the available abundance data into biovolumes and C biomass using a single standardized method. Statistical correction of the database was also adopted to exclude potential outliers and suspicious data points. The final database contains 90 648 data points with converted C biomass. The ubiquitous marine microalgal species Phaeocystis plays an important role in biogeochemical cycles. Phaeocystis has a complicated life cycle, which makes it hard to decipher the role of this organism in ecosystem dynamics and hence its role in elemental cycles. Estuarine microphytobenthos are frequently exposed to excessively high irradiances. Photoinhibition in microalgae is prevented by various photophysiological responses. We describe here the role of the xanthophyll pigments in photoacclimation. The pigment composition of the microphytobenthos was studied in three European estuaries (Barrow, Ireland; Eden, UK; Tagus, Portugal). Using HPLC-analyses, microscale changes in biomass and pigment composition were monitored over short (hourly) and long (seasonal) time scales. In the Barrow estuary, the biomass of microphytobenthos (measured as chlorophyll a) increased significantly in the top 400-500 µm of the sediment surface within 1 h of emersion; simultaneously, the xanthophyll pool size (diadinoxanthin plus diatoxanthin, dd + dt) almost doubled. A more gradual conversion of dd into dt was observed, with the dt:dd ratio increasing from 0.1 at the start of emersion to 0.3 after 3 h emersion. Similar trends in the dt:dd ratio were observed in the surface sediments of the Eden and the Tagus estuaries. Higher ratios were recorded in the Tagus estuary, which may be explained by higher incident irradiance. In addition, seasonal studies carried out in the Eden and Tagus estuaries showed that the xanthophyll pool size increased by 10% in the summer months. The pool size was highest in the Tagus estuary. Concurrently, high values for the de-epoxidation state were recorded, with values for dt/(dt + dd) 0.35 recorded in the summer. At the Eden, the ratio never exceeded 0.3. The de-epoxidation state was higher in winter than in summer, which was ascribed to the low winter temperatures. During a vertical migration study, a negative relationship between chlorophyll a and the de-epoxidation state was observed. It is suggested that this relationship originates from 'micro-migration' within the biofilm. Migration within the euphotic zone may provide an alternative means for cells to escape photodamage.
