Data fusion refers to the joint analysis of multiple datasets that provide different (e.g., complementary) views of the same task. In general, it can extract more information than separate analyses can. Jointly analyzing electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) measurements has been proved to be highly beneficial to the study of the brain function, mainly because these neuroimaging modalities have complementary spatiotemporal resolution: EEG offers good temporal resolution while fMRI is better in its spatial resolution. The EEG–fMRI fusion methods that have been reported so far ignore the underlying multiway nature of the data in at least one of the modalities and/or rely on very strong assumptions concerning the relation of the respective datasets. For example, in multisubject analysis, it is commonly assumed that the hemodynamic response function is a priori known for all subjects and/or the coupling across corresponding modes is assumed to be exact (hard). In this article, these two limitations are overcome by adopting tensor models for both modalities and by following soft and flexible coupling approaches to implement the multimodal fusion. The obtained results are compared against those of parallel independent component analysis and hard coupling alternatives, with both synthetic and real data (epilepsy and visual oddball paradigm). Our results demonstrate the clear advantage of using soft and flexible coupled tensor decompositions in scenarios that do not conform with the hard coupling assumption. © 2021 The Authors. The Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is a noninvasive tool to evaluate the activity of the autonomic nervous system. To study the HRV, different mathematical representations can be used. The selection of a representation might have an effect on the evaluation of the mechanisms that modulate the Heart Rate (HR). One of these mechanisms is the Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA), i.e. an increased HR during inhalation and a decreased HR during exhalation. Different methods exist to quantify the RSA. A common approach is to calculate the power in the High Frequency (HF, 0.15 - 0.4 Hz) band of the spectrum of the HRV representation. More recently proposed methods use the respiratory signals to estimate the strength of the RSA.This paper studies the effect of the HRV representations on the quantification of the RSA. To this end, an experiment is used in which the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system are selectively blocked. Three different HRV representations are considered. Afterwards, the strength of the RSA is estimated using three approaches, namely the spectral content in the HF band of the HRV representations, orthogonal subspace projections and a time-frequency representation.The results suggest that the selection of an HRV representation does not have a significant impact on the RSA estimates in a healthy population.

OBJECTIVE: Seizure diaries kept by patients are unreliable. Automated electroencephalography (EEG)-based seizure detection systems are a useful support tool to objectively detect and register seizures during long-term video-EEG recording. However, this standard full scalp-EEG recording setup is of limited use outside the hospital, and a discreet, wearable device is needed for capturing seizures in the home setting. We are developing a wearable device that records EEG with behind-the-ear electrodes. In this study, we determined whether the recognition of ictal patterns using only behind-the-ear EEG channels is possible. Second, an automated seizure detection algorithm was developed using only those behind-the-ear EEG channels. METHODS: Fifty-four patients with a total of 182 seizures, mostly temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), and 5284 hours of data, were recorded with a standard video-EEG at University Hospital Leuven. In addition, extra behind-the-ear EEG channels were recorded. First, a neurologist was asked to annotate behind-the-ear EEG segments containing selected seizure and nonseizure fragments. Second, a data-driven algorithm was developed using only behind-the-ear EEG. This algorithm was trained using data from other patients (patient-independent model) or from the same patient (patient-specific model). RESULTS: The visual recognition study resulted in 65.7% sensitivity and 94.4% specificity. By using those seizure annotations, the automated algorithm obtained 64.1% sensitivity and 2.8 false-positive detections (FPs)/24 hours with the patient-independent model. The patient-specific model achieved 69.1% sensitivity and 0.49 FPs/24 hours. SIGNIFICANCE: Visual recognition of ictal EEG patterns using only behind-the-ear EEG is possible in a significant number of patients with TLE. A patient-specific seizure detection algorithm using only behind-the-ear EEG was able to detect more seizures automatically than what patients typically report, with 0.49 FPs/24 hours. In the adult brain, it is well known that increases in local neural activity trigger changes in regional blood flow and, thus, changes in cerebral energy metabolism. This regulation mechanism is called neurovascular coupling (NVC). It is not yet clear to what extent this mechanism is present in the premature brain. In this study, we explore the use of transfer entropy (TE) in order to compute the nonlinear coupling between changes in brain function, assessed by means of EEG, and changes in brain oxygenation, assessed by means of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). In a previous study, we measured the coupling between both variables using a linear model to compute TE. The results indicated that changes in brain oxygenation were likely to precede changes in EEG activity. However, using a nonlinear and nonparametric approach to compute TE, the results indicate an opposite directionality of this coupling. The source of the different results provided by the linear and nonlinear TE is unclear and needs further research. In this study, we present the results from a cohort of 21 premature neonates. Results indicate that TE values computed using the nonlinear approach are able to discriminate between neonates with brain abnormalities and healthy neonates, indicating a less functional NVC in neonates with brain abnormalities.
