20. Contact Force and Friction of Generally Layered Laminates with Residual Hygrothermal Stresses under Mode II In-Plane-Shear Delamination.

Abstract

Mode II (in-plane-shear) delamination tests are more complex than mode I (opening) due to the presence of a contact force between the two arms. This force is essential for the calculation of the energy release rate (ERR) and is closely linked to friction effects. A novel formulation is presented in this article to estimate the contact force analytically. Specifically, the contact force is derived within the context of the rigid, semi-rigid, and flexible joint models. The analytical solutions consider the case of a generally layered composite laminate with residual hygrothermal stresses and are used to evaluate the ERR. The new formulation is compared with numerical models created using the Virtual Crack Closure Technique (VCCT) and the Cohesive Zone Method (CZM) for a fiber–metal laminate. The results show that the new formulation provides nearly identical ERR predictions to those of the VCCT and CZM models. Abstract

Self-healing cementitious mixtures have been studied extensively as a solution to labour-intensive and costly manual repairs. The implementation of such materials within the construction industry requires an adequate assessment of the regained mechanical properties, ensuring a safe environment for the user. While most standardized methods are limited in their characterization potential, ultrasound allows to monitor the healing progress in a non-destructive manner and provides a direct link to the elastic properties of the member under study. Still, an assessment of the mechanical properties of the healing products is not straightforward, as the ultrasonic waves propagate not only through the healing layer, but through the intact mortar around this zone as well. To isolate the healed layer from the intact material, numerical simulations were performed. By a comparison between experimental and numerical results, the elastic modulus of the healing products deposited inside the crack was determined.

Abstract

Self-healing cementitious composites provide an alternative to labour-intensive and costly manual repairs. While a cementitious blend possesses an inherent ability to repair its own damage through autogenous healing, an enhancement of the self-healing capacity can be obtained through the inclusion of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs). The implementation of such innovative materials within the construction industry requires proper evaluation methods to ensure a safe environment for the user. Over the past few years, contact ultrasonic measurements have proven their potential in assessing the self-healing progress. The sensitivity of ultrasonic waves to the elastic properties of the material under study allows for a direct link with the regained mechanical performance. Additionally, its non-destructive nature enables in-situ evaluations. However, the coupling of the sensors leads to a certain variability in the obtained results, as the application of the sensors is not identical between measurements. In an effort to increase the reliability of the results, contactless ultrasound can be applied, which is investigated in the present research.

Abstract

Polymer composites can be used in a plethora of applications, creating lightweight and durable structures. Their anisotropy together with the complexity of the laminate structure can lead to multiaxial stress states within the material, which can significantly affect the fracture process. In this work, carbon/epoxy laminates with different stacking sequences, and consequently different stress states, are tested under static and fatigue conditions. It is demonstrated that multiaxiality plays a crucial role in the fracture process and that shear stresses create severe damage conditions within the material.

44. The environmental performance of membrane structure: OCMW Zoutleeuw case study

Abstract

Membrane structures are lightweight spatial structures made of tensioned membranes. They are mostly structurally optimized and highly efficient, prefabricated and designed for a varying lifetime. Like with conventional construction systems, it is important to understand and assess the ecological impact of these lightweight constructions. This research studies the environmental performance of membrane structures by analysing a case study, the ‘OCMW Zoutleeuw’ canopy. In addition, the LCA of the membrane case study is compared with the LCA of a canopy made from steel with a similar size and function. Although the design is different, it allows to see some intrinsic qualities for both. The literature review shows that few LCA studies on membrane structures have been performed and that LCA data for these structures are still very limited or even not available (such as data for structural steel cables, ETFE-foils, or PTFE-fabric). The existing data in Environmental Product Declarations need to be verified to interpret the results. Generally, the research shows that the impact of the product stage (A1-A3) on the environmental indicators is high, while the ‘end-of-life’ stage (C1-C4) and the ‘benefits and loads beyond the system boundaries’ stage (D) can also have a non-neglectable impact, certainly for temporary structures. The LCA of the considered membrane structure and of the steel canopy shows that the Global Warming Potential (GWP) for the membrane structure is lower, even if the membrane is replaced during the service life of the canopy, while the available end-of-life processes of the steel/aluminium canopy are beneficial.

Abstract

Cracking of cementitious materials affects the durability of concrete structures and might lead to premature failure. As manual repairs are costly and labor-intensive, self-healing mixtures have been studied. The advantage of cementitious blends lies in the inherent ability of the material to repair damage through autogenous healing. As water is essential to be present to induce autogenous healing, the healing ability can be improved by adding water reservoirs in the form of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs). As a wide variety of SAPs with different characteristics exists, an assessment of their capacity to improve the self-healing ability is necessary to optimize the mix design. While most standardized evaluation techniques are limited in their characterization potential or due to their intrusive nature, ultrasonic measurements allow for a non-destructive material characterization. Due to their sensitivity to the obtained microstructure, the damage present and the elastic properties of the material under study, the self-healing evolution can be monitored and the results provide information on the regained mechanical performance. In the present study, various set-ups are utilized to assess the self-healing capacity of mortars with and without SAPs. The experimental framework includes coupled ultrasonic evaluations through surface wave and transmission measurements. In addition, numerical simulations were performed to isolate the healing layer and simulate the effect of healing by increasing the stiffness of the material in the crack.
