10. Provenancing 16th and 17th century CE building timbers in Denmark–combining dendroprovenance and Sr isotopic analysis

Abstract

Dendrochronology (tree-ring analysis) allows us to precisely date and identify the origin of timber from historic contexts. However, reference datasets to determine the origin can include timber of non-local origin. Therefore, we have applied Sr isotopic on timbers from three buildings in Jutland, Denmark, mostly dating from the late 16 th and early 17 th centuries CE to improve and refine the provenance identification. The dendrochronology suggested that some timbers analysed were imported from the Swedish side of Øresund/Kattegat while others were local, and others again might be from south Norway. By adding the Sr isotopic analysis, a far more detailed interpretation of the origin of these timbers can be presented for non-Danish timbers. In this paper we suggest that Danish ports in the provinces of Halland and Skåne played a major role in the timber trade between the Danish and Swedish parts of the Danish kingdom. For Danish timbers dendroprovenancing proved better than Sr isotopic analysis. Abstract

Timber was a resource of primordial importance during the medieval period. It was used in a variety of applications, e.g. for shipbuilding, for housing or ecclesiastical decoration. Growth, processing, usage and final deposition of timbers can be far from each other. In the TIMBER project, we seek to explore the use, procurement and trade of timber in Northern Europe during the 11th to the 17th centuries. Shipwrecks provide large quantities of timber for study: both the timbers used for building the ship and those present in the cargo. n this project, the study of the movement of timbers is achieved through a combination of archaeology, history, dendrochronology, aDNA and Sr isotopic analysis. As such we want to provide an interdisciplinary framework for answering questions of provenance, trade and use of raw timber and finished products around the Baltic sea. Historical records provide some information about the trade of timber and the procurement for large (state) projects. Through dendrochronology the felling date and geographical origin can be obtained if appropriate master chronologies are available. In some cases, for example the so-called ’Baltic 1‘, ’Baltic 2‘ and ’Baltic 3‘ oak chronologies built from art-historical objects, we still do not know what the precise geographical origin of the oaks are. The application of Sr isotopic analysis and aDNA on timber remains from shipwrecks can provide an answer to these questions and provide a fuller picture of th stakeholders in the lucrative Baltic trade. During this presentation, we will explore the possibilities and challenges of aDNA and Sr isotopic analysis of this wood. Furthermore, applying these methods, we will further refine the knowledge on timber trade in Northern Europe

Abstract

Sb was frequently used as a raw material, both in ancient glass-making (as an opacifier and decolouriser) and metallurgy (either as an alloying element or as a pure metal). Despite this ubiquity, antimony production has only occasionally been studied and questions concerning its provenance are still not satisfactorily answered. This study evaluates the suitability of Sb isotope analysis for provenance determination purposes, as experiments under lab conditions have revealed fractionation occurring during redox processes in oxidising stibnites and in making opacified glasses. The results of this paper help to evaluate the possible influence of the pyrotechnological processes on the antimony isotope composition of glass artefacts. This paper focuses on the Caucasus as case study by applying mineralogical, geochemical and isotopic analysis to Georgian ores (mainly from the Racha-Lechkumi district) and Late Bronze Age (LBA; 15th–10th century BCE) metallic Sb objects found at the sites of Brili and Chalpiragorebi. 32. Supercritical Fluids for Higher Extraction Yields of Lipids from Archeological Ceramics

Abstract

The extraction and study of organic residues from ceramics has been a subject of interest for the last 50 years in archeology and archeological science. Lipids are among the best-preserved organic substances in archeological contexts and can provide information about the diets of ancient populations as well as past environments. Here, we present a method which demonstrates significantly improved extraction of lipids from archeological pots by replacing liquid organic solvents with supercritical fluids. Optimization of the procedure using response surface methodology (RSM) approach showed that, on our system, optimal conditions for supercritical extraction of lipids from synthetic fired clay ceramics could be achieved using carbon dioxide with 16 vol % of cosolvent EtOH–H2O (95:5 v/v) in 90 min at a flow rate of 2.3 mL/min, for a pressure of 30 MPa and a temperature of 50 °C. For all reference and archeological samples included in this study, lipid yields obtained by supercritical fluid extraction under these optimal conditions were systematically higher than by conventional solvent extraction. This study also highlighted a variability of the ratio of unsaturated versus saturated fatty acids depending on the extraction method. This can have important implications in the identification of the residue(s). The increased extraction efficiency provided by supercritical fluids, as well as their minimally destructive nature, enable new and refined approaches to residue analysis and dating of archeological ceramics.
