Abstract

The uptake of cadmium and zinc by the common carp, Cyprinus carpio, was studied in chemically defined freshwater in the presence of different organic ligands (i.e., citrate, glycine, histidine, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, and nitrilotriacetic acid). In most cases, metal complexation decreased Cd and Zn uptake by reducing the free Cd and Zn ion activity. However, Cd and Zn uptake did not increase linearly with the free Cd and Zn ion activity in the solution. A good fit to the data was obtained when the observations were fitted to a Michaelis-Menten-like model for carrier-mediated transport of the metal ions across the biological interface. In addition, the uptake of Cd in the presence of citrate, glycine, and histidine was markedly higher than expected on the basis of the free Cd ion activity. It was concluded that cadmium complexes of these low molecular weight, hydrophilic ligands contributed to the Cd bioavailability, probably by direct uptake of these complexes. Zinc uptake in the presence of the complexing agents could be predicted on the basis of the ambient free Zn ion activity, although uptake in the presence of citrate was lower than expected on the basis of the free Zn ion activity. These results provide a challenging test for the free ion activity model.

Abstract

The effect of different calcium concentrations on the uptake of cobalt through the gills of the common carp, Cyprinus carpio, was studied in chemically defined freshwater. Fish were acclimated for 16 days to a set of different calcium concentrations, while cobalt uptake experiments were conducted over a 3-hour period at the same range of calcium concentrations. A clear decrease in cobalt influx with increasing calcium concentrations in the water of exposure was observed. The effect of the calcium concentration in the water of acclimation is significant, but of minor importance. Increasing the free cobalt ion activity in the water increases the cobalt influx, while calcium influx is inhibited. High calcium levels in the water reduce the blocking of calcium influx by cobalt. Since uptake kinetics of both cobalt and calcium show similar results for influx in body, gills and blood, and both elements inhibit each others uptake, a competitive interaction at the apical translocation system of the gill epithelium is suggested.

26. ACCUMULATION OF 137Cs BY LARVAE OF THE MIDGE CHIRONOMUS RIPARIUS FROM SEDIMENT: EFFECT OF POTASSIUM.

Abstract

We studied the effect of potassium on the uptake of radiocesium from sediment by larvae of the midge Chironomus riparius. Sediment ingestion rate was determined for one week. After 24 h the gut content remained constant, indicating that equilibrium was reached between sediment ingestion and sediment elimination. These data were used to account for radiocesium present in the gut in subsequent uptake experiments. Reference sediment was equilibrated with solutions containing different concentrations of potassium: 1, 10, 100, and 1,000 µM. Adsorption of 137Cs to the sediment was investigated. Three different radiocesium levels (0.3, 0.6, and 1.2 KBq/ml) were applied at the four different potassium levels. In all cases more than 94% of all radiocesium was adsorbed to the sediment within 48 h. The sediment, equilibrated with the four different potassium levels, was spiked with a constant amount of 296 Bq/ml 137Cs. Accumulation by midge larvae was followed for one week, and subsequently elimination was followed for another week. No significant differences in radiocesium levels in midge larvae among the treatments were found after one week of exposure. However, using a one-compartment accumulation model, a small but significant effect of potassium in water and sediment on the uptake and elimination rate constants (ka and ke) was found. These results indicate that although differences were rather small, radiocesium accumulation decreased with increasing potassium level in the sediment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
